Remember when you were a little child trying to learn to walk
First, you had to learn how to balance (平衡) yourself and stand. You fell down, and then got back up. You laughed sometimes and cried at other times. After much practice, you finally learned how to balance yourself. You got much pleasure from this new feeling of power—you'd stand everywhere you could. It was a happy time—you did it!
Now the next step—walking. You'd seen others do it. It didn't look that hard—just move your legs while you were standing. Wrong—more difficult than you ever imagined. But after you tried again and again and again, you understood how to walk.
If people found you walking, they cheered, "Oh, look at what the kid is doing." This encouraged you! But look back on those days when you were the little child—how many times did you try when no one was watching, or when no one was cheering You couldn't wait for someone to encourage you to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself.
So, keep trying and encouraging yourself as you learned to walk if you want to succeed in doing something.

Our cities are busy and full of people. They’re not smart enough. Wu Yuhang, 13, from Dongguan, Guangdong Province, thinks this is a problem.
“Crossing the street can be dangerous. People cannot keep their eyes off their phones. Drivers cannot see traffic lights if their cars are behind a big truck. I once saw a billboard (广告牌) fall down in a storm. That’s the most terrible,” said Wu. “I’m trying to find smart ways to solve these problems.”
Over the past few years, Wu has invented an assistant system (辅助系统) for traffic lights. It sets LED lights along the road so that drivers can see traffic lights more easily.
To make his inventions, Wu learned programming, building models and so on. But Wu said the most important thing is to find people’s problems in lives.

Paco shut the door hard after school. “Dad, I’m so angry.” Paco’s father stopped his work and patiently listened to his son. “Jack made me lose face today, and I even hope something bad will happen to him,” Paco added.
His father went to the corner, found a bag of charcoal (木炭) and said, “Son, take the white shirt hanging on the rope as Jack, and the charcoal in this bag as something bad. Hit the shirt with charcoal, and every time you hit a piece of charcoal, it means Jack has experienced a bad thing. Let’s see what will happen after using up all the charcoal.” Paco didn’t understand why, but he did it anyway.
“How do you feel now ” his father asked. “I feel relaxed, but I have left several black marks on my jacket,” Paco said. Father asked Paco to look in the mirror. Paco found himself covered in black charcoal.
“You see, the white shirt hasn’t become very dirty, but you’ve become a ‘black’ yourself.”
So treating people with an open mind is a kind of spirit. Not everything can go as well as what we hope. If we can learn to tolerate (忍耐) bad things, life will be much better. But if we can’t, everything doesn’t go well.

How can I become a better person This question has been in my head for long. As students, we spend most of our time studying. I know learning at school, of course, makes us better persons, but I always dream of doing more.
Last year, I got to know a group of autistic(患自闭症的)children. We called them “the Snails(蜗牛)”. It was hard to communicate with them at first, because they wouldn’t like to. After a two﹣week training, I became more skilled. I got closer to them day by day. To my surprise, I found that every one of “the Snails” had his or her own talent; And their colorful pictures on the wall attracted my special attention, though it was difficult to tell what they were trying to express.
Moved by their pictures, I decided to hold a charity sale. We walked on the busy street, selling their creative pictures. We sold 60 pictures that day. People thought their pictures were full of imagination.
Back to the question about how to become a better person, I think I am lucky enough to get my own answer.

Teachers are often considered to be engineers of the human soul. They are tasked with the mission to spread knowledge, ideas and truth. But there’s one person in China who is called the “teacher of teachers”.
He is Chinese educator Tao Xingzhi. This year marks the 133 anniversary of his birth. People in different parts of China commemorated (纪念) Tao by visiting his memorial halls or holding meetings to reflect on his thoughts on education.
Born in Anhui province, China, 1891, Tao studied at Columbia University, US, in 1914.
There he studied educational philosophy under the guidance of John Dewey, an American philosopher and educational reformer (改革家).
But when Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not blindly copy Dewey’s education method or theories.
For Tao, education is an active process in real-life experiences rather than one of telling and being told. He proposed “unity (融合) of teaching, learning, and reflective acting”.
Apart from reforming education methods, Tao also tried his best to promote mass education (推进大众教育).
After conducting surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was surprised to learn that the rate of urban illiteracy (文盲) in China went beyond 70 percent. To solve the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working. To deal with the lack of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal College (晓庄师范学院) in the northern suburbs (郊区) of Nanjing to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at rural schools.
Even during the anti-Japanese war, Tao never forgot his ambition. He set up Yucai Middle School in the suburbs of Chongqing and offer free education to refuge children and children of the Communist Party of China members.
Maybe Tao’s motto (座右铭) is the best explanation for his life, “Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass.”
