Passage 2
(2023·山东泰安三模)Is English grammar useful or useless in learning English 1 Their creators don't believe it's necessary to study strict grammar rules to understand and speak a language. And they might be true to some extent.
However, grammar is the foundation of every language. It's a system of rules that allow us to structure sentences. 2 Well, it's true that learning grammar can be challenging, especially if you think about it that way.
In fact, learning grammar doesn't have to involve memorising a bunch of rules from a textbook. 3 Games are also a great method of communicative grammar practice. In other words, you should see grammar in action. You shouldn't only learn grammar rules but rather see them in usage.
4 Learning grammar is not a prerequisite(先决条件), but it'll help you increase accuracy and learn the language a little faster. You can see it as a shortcut for building sentences and expressing yourself. It's true that learning grammar takes time. And we won't lie to you—it does take time, even if you use innovative learning methods. But once you start learning it, you'll realise it's not that complicated. Things will start to make sense. 5
On the other hand, if you're planning to travel and you simply want to learn practical vocabulary to get around the city, you don't have to spend time mastering grammar.
A.And it will definitely be worthwhile in the end.
B.What we're trying to say is that grammar matters.
C.But if you want to become fluent, you shouldn't avoid it.
D.But people are often afraid of it or they find it terribly boring.
E.Many apps and online courses avoid indepth grammar lessons.
F.And a different approach to learning grammar matters even more.
G.Grammar can be learnt through examples, stories, and context.
Passage 3
(2024·安徽合肥模拟)The road to learning how to take personal responsibility can be a difficult one, but starting simple really works. 1 Here is some advice you need to follow.
Focus on the basics of your journey.
Just like the ocean, our life has many ups and downs. If you start building a solid sailboat, you can withstand(经受住) the weather. The solid boat represents your basic needs: safety, selfesteem(自尊) and connections with others. 2
Open your sails and be willing to fail.
Do not lay too much stress on the destination. Just head in the right direction. 3 You're supposed to take the courage to really open your sails. When you devote yourself to what you are doing, you will forget about your insecurities and worries.
4
As you sail through life, are you making goals and plans, or are you simply letting things happen and watching life pass Working on goal setting enables you to measure your progress and take responsibility for all you have and haven't done to achieve goals.
Live in the moment.
As you're moving through the ocean of your life, are you really concentrating on each present moment, or are your thoughts set on the past and future Do you complain about mistakes others made that forced you into a difficult position 5 Start taking personal responsibility for each thought and emotion that passes through you.
A.Reach your goals.
B.Move forward with intention.
C.So make sure that they are being met.
D.Then begin to tackle the more difficult aspects.
E.Stop blaming others or situations if you really want to enjoy each moment.
F.Everyone can edge closer to that stage through taking personal responsibility.
G.You must enjoy the sail by finding purpose and following that desire to explore.
Passage 4
(2023·福建三明高三上学期一模)
The Upside to Being Outside
Research shows that being in nature makes people feel good, whether they're roughing it in the wilderness for days or just hanging out at a local park for a while. One study was conducted in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. Researchers found that most participants' mood and wellbeing improved significantly when they spent time in urban parks, even though the average visit was only around half an hour.
1 For example, scientists in the United Kingdom studied the impact of the “30 Days Wild” campaign. It challenged people to interact with nature for 30 days by enjoying earthy activities like feeding birds and planting flowers. Participants were measurably happier and healthier throughout the challenge ... and for months afterwards, too. 2
How does nature boost people's happiness Scientists say that spending time in natural settings reduces stress and anxiety, which benefits mental and physical health. Research shows our brains are more relaxed in natural settings.
To most people, it's not news that nature can be calming. But multiple studies have found that spending time in nature also has some more surprising benefits, like improving creativity and problemsolving. 3 Another found that exposure to nature helped people score better on tests. That's more proof that going outside is a smart move!
What accounts for the connection with cognition and creativity It could be that a good dose of nature acts as a cure to information overload. Everyday life involves a lot of multitasking. Some scientists theorise that spending time in nature enables our brains to rest and recover from mental tiredness. 4
Naturally, scientific studies don't cover everything that's great about the great outdoors. 5 From recreation and exercise to happiness and creativity, there are lots of upsides to getting outside.
A.What's more, the lift people get from nature is long lasting.
B.So, kicking back in a park is a bit like treating your mind to a restful mini vacation.
C.Lots of people enjoy fun activities outside, like swimming, riding bikes, or climbing trees.
D.One study revealed that people were better at figuring out puzzles after a fourday camping trip.
E.When the only light you've seen all day is the glow of a screen, it might be a good idea to switch it off.
F.According to many scientific studies, there's a good chance it'll make you happier, healthier, and more creative.
G.This means that whether you're studying or playing video games, heading outside to give your brain a break might help you get to the next level.
Passage 5
(2023·山东省新高考联合模拟)It seems a bit strange to imagine ancient Egyptians celebrating their birthdays with layered cakes topped with lighted candles. 1
The first birthday cakes were nothing of what they are today and weren't even called birthday cakes. 2 At that time only they could afford to celebrate with something sweet. That is how cake became associated with special occasions.
Ancient Egyptians are credited with “inventing” the birthday celebration. And ancient Greeks borrowed the tradition but rightfully realised that a dessert would make the celebration all the more meaningful. So they baked moonshaped cakes to offer up to the moon. 3
It wasn't just the ancient Egyptians and Greeks who celebrated with sweet cakes. 4 And it's believed that the original birthday cake came from them. Rather than just celebrating birthdays, though, ancient Rome was known for celebrating all things with a cake including a wedding, but there was an exception—the birthdays celebrated were only for men who were citizens, and they had to be famous.
Modern birthday parties are said to get their roots from the 18thcentury German celebration. On the morning of a child's birthday, he or she would receive a cake with lighted candles that added up to the child's age plus one. 5 The birthday child would make a wish, try to blow out all the candles in one breath, and dig in.
A.Ancient Romans also had their traditions.
B.Ancient Greeks made the first birthday cakes.
C.Rather, they were symbolic of the noble class.
D.On birthday, children would eat cakes made by their mums.
E.This extra candle was called the light of hope for another new year.
F.They also decorated the cakes to make them shine like the moon.
G.However, they're the ones who first came up with the idea to do so.

Passage 7
(2024·河北石家庄质检)Just breathe. Sound familiar?Whether trying to decrease stress, anxiety, and muscle tension or increase our focus, we are frequently encouraged to breathe.
There is a good reason for this, particularly when it comes to muscle tension and pain. 1 When we are stressed, our muscles tense, and this tension can increase pain. Pain can also cause stress, increasing muscle tension and creating more pain. Also, it is common to hold our breath when we are stressed or in pain. 2
So, one helpful way to manage stress and pain is to practise relaxing our muscles and nervous system via breathing exercises. While engaging in longer relaxation exercises is beneficial, practising brief exercises is practical.
Breathe Slowly and Rhythmically
3 Imagine your breath is a wave in the ocean that is slowly coming into shore and then slowly going back into the ocean. See if you can practise breathing slowly and steadily for about two to five minutes.
Lengthen the Exhalation(呼气) Portion of Your Breath
The exhalation is like a brake for our nervous system, helping it slow down. Practise making the exhalation portion of the breath longer than the inhalation. For example, if you naturally inhale for a count of three, practise slowly exhaling for a count of five.
Breathe from Your Belly(腹部)
Belly breathing tends to be the most relaxing type of breath. When you breathe using your belly, you stimulate the vagus nerve which activates the relaxation response. 4 Therefore, you feel at ease and comfortable.
It is important not to wait until tension and pain increase to practise these exercises. 5 So just slow down and breathe.
A.Practise breathing in and out at slow speed.
B.Breathing from your nose only helps you calm down.
C.Unfortunately, doing so increases pain and stress.
D.Physical pain and emotional stress often go hand in hand.
E.The exhalation part of the breath is the most relaxing.
F.They will be most effective when you are not in much pain.
G.This will reduce your heart rate and blood pressure and lower stress.

Passage 9
(2023·湖南名校联盟冲刺压轴卷)Getting older involves changes in all realms of life, from the physical to the mental, to the social, emotional, sexual, and more. Ideally, you'll have already been practising healthy habits throughout your life. But even if you haven't, it's never too late to start taking active steps to maintain and even improve your health. Adopting even a few of the habits will start you on the right track.
1 According to Medline Plus, exercising regularly can improve your balance, help keep you mobile, improve your mood by reducing feelings of anxiety and depression, and contribute to better cognitive functioning. 2 Any exercise at all is better than none. CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity each week; you can further break this down into 30 active minutes a day for five days a week.
One article found that participants who reported higher levels of social activity were more likely to experience more positive moods, fewer negative feelings, and higher levels of physical activity. If you don't currently have an active social life, look for opportunities to reconnect with old friends or make new ones. 3
Regular checkups with your doctor are opportunities to catch problems early and treat them before they become bigger problems. If you are experiencing memory or mobility issues, or have been recently hospitalised, you may want to schedule an appointment with geriatricians(老年病学专家). 4 Following an initial consultation, they can help you create a care plan tailored to your needs.
It may seem like a nobrainer, but it bears repeating that you should always take any medication prescribed to you exactly as directed by your doctor. Passage 10
(2023·山东济南高三三模)Gardening may be one of the most relaxing hobbies you'll find, with the excitement of seeing something you have planted actually turn into a flower. But if you've been holding back because you don't have a yard, then you're missing out a lot. 1
Container gardening is the most obvious way to plant when you don't have a ton of space. If you can get a container regardless of its size, you can have a garden. 2 Even a small pot with a brightly coloured flower or bushy green plants can give your entryway a pop of colour.
3 Grow climbing plants on a fence or the posts over your doorway to decorate the side of your home. Plenty of plants are happy to grow up instead of out, so you can have some greenery without a traditional garden.
Have an apartment or townhouse Then consider outdoor window boxes that you access from inside. 4 And they give you plenty of options to plant bright blooms or fresh herbs within reach—plus they give your home some added appeal at the same time.
There's probably still one room where you haven't thought of putting some plants: Your bathroom. Even if yours doesn't get much light, a wallmounted garden can still grow well. 5 They will give your bathroom a more natural, earthy feel.
A.These require no ground space at all.
B.They can add some green to the inside of your home.
C.When plants get enough sunlight, they grow better.
D.If you're really short of space, think height instead.
E.Bigger pots give you space to grow several different flowers.
F.In fact, there are plenty of easy ways to get the joy of gardening.
G.Plants that do well in shady and wet environments are the best choice.
Passage 11
(2023·潍坊高三3月核心素养测评)Have you ever wondered why most people prefer to book accommodations that have a great view from the balcony Frank Lloyd Wright says, “Study Nature, love Nature, stay close to Nature. 1 .”
It's no secret that closing to nature is good for creative minds. Scientists agree that being in nature restores exhausted attention circuits, which can then help us be more open to creativity and problemsolving. 2 : As part of her daily writing routine, bestseller author J.K. Rowling would take a morning walk to small streams nearby before eventually returning to work. I would argue that this habit isn't just a habit but an intentional, necessary element of her creative process. Actually, unique ideas come from the contact with nature.
Forest bathing is a common form of relaxation and medicine in Japan. It was developed in 1982, and recent studies demonstrate that being in the forest and walking among the trees lower your stress levels. The effects are so powerful that forest bathing is now a governmentsupported policy in Japan. 3 . Just a walk in the woods on a sunny morning also improves your wellbeing.
4 ! In a series of experiments published in 2021, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, studied the potential impact of nature on the willingness to be generous, trusting, and helpful towards others. After being exposed to the more beautiful nature scenes, participants acted more generously and more trustingly in the games than those who saw less beautiful scenes, and the effects appeared to be due to corresponding increases in positive emotion.
A walk in nature walks the soul back home. 5 ? Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, to notice the way people move, the way the sun reflects in a puddle.
A.It will never fail you
B.A famousperson example
C.We can find the answer easily
D.What's a good chance to get to nature
E.So why not engage more closely with nature
F.Interestingly, nature may help you to be kind

Passage 12
(2023·河南豫北名校联考二)
How to Stop Being a People Pleaser
As a recovering people pleaser, I spent much of my life keeping others happy. Breaking this habit meant stepping on a few toes. However, I've become a happier person as a result. Here are some tips I used to stop being a people pleaser.
Identify your priorities. Take a moment to think about why you are trying to learn how to stop being a people pleaser. 1 Why do you feel the need to keep them happy Answering these questions will help you set a goal that you can hold yourself accountable for.
Just say “no”. One reason why people pleasers say “yes” to everything is that they fear disappointing others. 2 If you are a people pleaser, you are likely to spend lots of energy trying to control how people feel about you. The best thing you can do is let them feel their feelings. It will feel liberated to free yourself from being responsible for someone else's reaction.
3 Saying “no” is a good way to set better boundaries in your important relationships. All healthy relationships have their own boundaries. If you haven't set boundaries in your relationships, the odds are that at some point you will end up feeling pressured to do something you don't want to do.
Accept yourself. Many people pleasers are insecure about who they are. 4 Check out our summary of Brené Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection to learn how to accept your imperfections and love yourself.
Remember that you cannot please everyone. No matter what you do there will always be someone who is unhappy with your choices. 5
A.Learn to set healthy boundaries.
B.Don't mix up your boundaries with others'.
C.Who are the people that you feel the need to please
D.Spend some time learning to love yourself for who you are.
E.So why bother trying to please everyone if it isn't possible
F.That is why the more you seek security, the less of it you have.
G.But saying “no” is the best way to take care of your own needs.

Passage 13
(2024·浙江1月卷)In the past few years, online learning has become a significant part of the university and college experience. 1 But are all online courses created equal How can you be sure that digital learning is right for you 2
We interviewed students and professors to get their advice about online courses. The most obvious advantage of online learning is that you can study anywhere and anytime. 3 “I think a point that many people lose sight of is how easy it can be to fall behind schedule,” says graduate student Amanda Bindman. Before choosing to study online, consider whether you're a selfmotivated learner and if the material seems interesting enough to keep you going.
The tip that comes up most often is simple: build online courses into your weekly schedule, just like what you would do with inperson courses. 4 He noted that his online students usually end up with lower grades. It is so easy to let an online course slide, but your grades will suffer as a result. Be sure to schedule set times to watch your lectures, read materials and contribute to online discussion boards.
5 A social connection is often a big part of learning. There are things you can do to ease this problem. Jessica Pink, an undergraduate student, suggests taking online courses with a friend, so you can motivate each other to stay on track. You can also find students on the class discussion board to organize a study group, or schedule inperson meetings with your professor to discuss course concepts.
A.But that doesn't mean there aren't deadlines.
B.Your motivation should be your main concern.
C.Do you know that online courses are also part of your education
D.Professor Alex Davidson teaches the same course in person and online.
E.The chief complaint about online courses is that they lack human interaction.
F.If you take an online course, what can you do to ensure the best possible grade
G.A survey found that 29 percent of college students registered for online courses.
Passage 14
( 2024届·北京市朝阳期中)Some people prefer to have a bite to eat before hitting the gym, known as a fed workout. Others would like to wait until after exercising to refuel their bodies, called a fasted workout. __1__ Many experts say there’s no easy answer because it depends on the person.
If you want energy and strength for an ideal workout, you need fuel. A fed workout will provide your body with power. Eating before exercising may help you sustain longer sessions and lift heavier weights. __2__ Muscle preservation is also an essential component of strengthening your body. Nitrogen(氮) is critical for processing protein that builds healthy muscles. People tend to lose less nitrogen during a fed workout than a fasted one.
Many fitness enthusiasts are not on board with this idea. They report feeling sick and inactive while trying to exercise after eating. With a fasted workout, you may not get the usual indigestion. Experts for fasted workouts further claim that eating afterwards makes your body use its fat reserves for energy, meaning you will burn more fat. __3__ It can cause a sudden drop in your blood glucose(葡萄糖) levels, and you may feel dizzy. You may even be more likely to overeat.
__4__ Not all foods are created equal. For example, if you choose a fed workout, you’ll probably lose a lot of water during an intense training, so you should consider drinking some before hand. With a fasted workout, it would help if you had some nutrition right after your session is complete. Drink some water. Then, have a light meal or nutritional snack.
Deciding when to eat for an ideal workout is a personal choice. Both fasted workouts and fed activities have their benefits and shortcomings. __5__
A. However, a fasted workout might not work for you.
B. How your body will respond is based on your workout intensity.
C. These benefits can result in burning more fat and shaping a slimmer body.
D. To eat or not to eat, that is the question on many fitness enthusiasts’ minds.
E. Think thoroughly and discuss with your fitness instructor before taking a choice.
F. Knowing what to eat for an ideal workout is just as important as knowing when to eat.
Passage 15
( 2024届· 北京市通州高三上期中)Failure to ask for help can affect students’ academic performance, self-esteem(自尊), and potentially their access to learning in the future. ____ but the good news is that there are many strategies that can help them become stronger self-advocates for their learning.
____ This requires honesty and self-awareness — some students don’t think they need help even when formal or informal assessments indicate otherwise.
Once students acknowledge that they’re struggling, they may feel shame or embarrassment. Many students have told me, “____. I don’t need help.” They fear that asking for help signals weakness or failure in their character, though adults could tell them that asking for help is instead a sign of maturity and strength.
Teachers can help students understand how they learn best and empower them to be advocates for their own learning by teaching them how to ask for help. Here are two strategies for improving students’ self-advocacy skills.
Strengthen students’ metacognition(元认知). ____ After a test, for example, have students answer questions about how they studied, how much time they spent studying, their test grade, and what they’ll do differently for the next test.
Help students understand that teachers want to help. Asking students why an adult would choose teaching as a career can be an eye-opening activity. Have students pause and reflect in small groups about why they think Teacher X became a teacher. This is extra fun if Teacher X can visit your classroom to hear the brainstormed ideas. Guide students to the final answer: “____.”
A. I want to try it on my own.
B. Teachers become teachers because they like to help.
C. Students must first recognize that they’re struggling.
D. I’ve used this exercise to show that I care about them.
E. There are several reasons why students struggle to ask for help.
F. Teachers and parents often act as external monitors of student progress.
G. Teachers can encourage students with metacognitive teaching to think about their learning.
