Passage 1
(2024·山东日照·模拟预测)Providing feedback is an essential part of personal and career development. 6 One of the most effective and classic methods to make it easier for both the giver and receiver is the feedback sandwich technique, sometimes also referred to as a compliment (赞美) sandwich.
If you are seeking to enhance your career growth, learning about the feedback sandwich can be a game-changer. 7 Rather than simply focusing on what went wrong, it ensures that the person receiving the feedback also knows what went well. The process can be broken into three parts. A manager or superior starts by providing positive feedback to encourage a person to continue their good work. Afterward, they communicate constructive feedback for the person to improve. This feedback aims to be specific, behavioral, and relevant to the situation. 8
The feedback sandwich technique is a highly useful method. It can help soften the blow of criticism. By starting and ending with positive feedback, it’s easier for the recipient to receive the constructive criticism without feeling attacked. 9 As we all know, criticism is awkward, but when you’re giving potentially negative feedback, it’s easier when you’re also serving it up with two compliments. Additionally, it enables the meeting or an interaction to end on a positive note.
10 Many people are knowledgeable about this technique, which might make it sound insincere or predictable if not done correctly. Also, when feedback becomes a routine, employees can start to perceive positive feedback as simply a form of sugarcoating the negatives, thus reducing its value. Hence, positive feedback should not simply be seen as something to cushion the negative, but should be delivered so as to reinforce and encourage good performance.
A.It’s essential to be aware of its limitations, though.
B.Similarly, it is also easier for the giver to offer feedback.
C.The manager then ends the feedback session with positive feedback.
D.The technique may lead to unclear and indirect personal communication.
E.Delivering constructive criticism, however, can be challenging if not done correctly.
F.It may not be for every situation, but it can make negative feedback more digestible.
G.This technique involves using constructive feedback wrapped between two layers of positive feedback.

How to have an attractive personality
Demonstrating an attractive personality is key to making friends and having lasting relationships. These traits(特性) give you the ability to inspire and fascinate others, making others more drawn to you as a result.
Listen to others. _ Instead of responding to a text, opening an email, or thinking about your next meal, pay attention to what the other person is saying. Show them you're listening and interested by comment ing on the story or asking questions.
Speak sincerely. No one likes to be cheated. If you can't commit to something, it's better to be honest about it than to have to tell them at the last minute that you can't make it. When people ask for your opinion, you should be honest.
You should always say what you believe in, be willing to take risks, and have the ability to admit your mistake without being worried about what other people will think. Doing this shows that you have self-confidence. This helps create an attractive personality.
Know "how" vs "what". How you say things is arguably more important than what you say. If you try to give someone a genuine compliment, but he or she thinks you say it with a sarcastic undertone, your compliment won't mean a thing. _ If you notice that people often take things you say the wrong way, there's a good chance you can change how you speak. Ask your friends to make you aware of the way you're coming across.

Find the learning style that suits you best
To succeed academically, you need to be productive. To be productive, you need to find a suitable learning style. Whether it’s for everyday learning or revising for exams, the learning style that helps you achieve maximum productivity will be crucial. 36 Note-taking
Note-taking can include copying out passages of books or summarizing concepts on notecards. 37 The problem with note-taking is that it’s all too easy simply to copy out what someone else says without really taking it in. 38Sometimes you might find that you learn things more easily if you have to explain a concept to someone else. This is because in order to explain something clearly to someone else, you have to have a thorough grasp of it yourself. For example, giving a presentation to fellow students will require you first to have an excellent understanding of the topic and then to put together materials from which the others can learn. Learning by doing This method means that rather than reading things in books, try to experience things in real life. 39 Experiencing things practically gives your brain something concrete to remember, so you will absorb the information more easily. Tests and mock exams (模拟考试)
40 If you’re the sort of person who benefits from these sorts of challenges, you could try asking your teacher, parents or study buddies to set a mock exam to test what you’ve learned on a particular topic.
A. Explaining to others
B. Diagrams and mind maps
C. If so, visual methods of learning might suit you best.
D. Here are some common learning styles and choose one that suits you best!

Passage 14
(2023届·北京市朝阳期中)Your Musical Preference Gives Insight into How You Think
A study out of Cambridge found that your musical preferences can give insights into how you think. The study focused on a particular psychological theory of personality known as the Empathizing-Systemizing (E-S) Theory. 35 An empathizer likes to focus on and respond to the emotions of others, while a systemizer likes to analyse rules and patterns in the world. Cognitive style may seem like an unusual way to group people, but the researchers found that it worked well.
“Although people's music choices change over time, we've discovered a person's empathy level and thinking style predict what kind of music they like, said PhD student David Greenberg, the leader of the study, in a statement. 36
To study a somewhat unusual subject, they took a somewhat unique route: They gathered data through Facebook. Over 4, 000 people participated through the my Personality app by first taking a personality assessment. Later, they listened to and rated 50 musical pieces.
For those who scored high on empathy, they tended to prefer soft rock, R&B, country, and folk. 37 Further, they tended to enjoy music that had low energy, negative emotions, or emotional depth. From these characteristics, the researchers identified several songs that would be ideal for empathizers: “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley, “Come away with me” by Norah Jones, and “All of me” by Billie Holiday.
38 They favored intense music and disliked the soft and simple styles. Their music tended towards high energy, or positive emotions, and also featured a high degree of depth and complexity. From this, the researchers believed that “Concerto in C” by Antonio Vivaldi, “Etude Opus 65 No. 3” by Alexander Scriabin, and “Enter Sandman” by Metallica would be ideal songs for systemizers.
39 “A lot of money is put into algorithms (运算法则) to choose what music you may want to listen to, for example, on Spotify and Apple Music,” said Greenberg. “By knowing an individual's thinking style, such services might in future be able to fine tune their music recommendations to an individual.
A. But they disliked more intense music like punk and heavy metal.
B. These findings could prove useful, especially for the music industry.
C. Meanwhile, those who scored high on systemizing were exactly opposite.
D. Based on the findings, researchers recommend particular styles for different people.
E. It divides people into groups according to whether they tend to empathize or systemize.
F. He argued that musical preferences reflect clear characteristics such as age and personality.
G. He argued peopled cognitive style can be a better predictor of what music they like than their personality.
Passage 15
(2023届·北京市海淀期中) What's in a name
Some words sound like what they mean. And they could influence everything from fictional depictions of aliens to your first impression on a job application. But most words have no apparent connection to what they signify. As the linguist Steven Pinker puts it, we call a dog “dog” because everyone else does. And that’s how it lifts to be. 35
That rule applies to most words, but not all. The words pop and murmur sound like they sound. Try to shout the word whisper. Weird, right 36 It seems natural to associate the names of large animals, for example, with low-pitched sounds: say, elephant, compared with mouse. Pinker and others argue that iconicity is rare in language, but plenty of psychologists and linguists disagree.
Beyond the debates, there are far-reaching implications for human interaction. 37 People associate the “round” sounds in people's names with one set of characteristics, and names featuring “sharp” sounds with a very different set. “Anne tends to he conscientious, hardworking and sensitive,” Penny Pexinan, a psychologist at University of Canada says. “Kale is expected to he extroverted, less conscientious, less hardworking and less agreeable.”
Luckily, surveys suggest that the link exists only in the mind of the person making it. 38 “You could construct a little hit of an unlikely situation where people start to look like their names over time and maybe people's personalities start to match their names through some sort of congruency(一致性). But we didn't find that.” Pexman says. There's also no evidence that people are basing their judgments on people they met previously.
39 “We have videos of people being interviewed for jobs and we will manipulate the names of those candidates before others evaluate them,” she says.
“What's in a name ” William Shakespeare asked us in Romeo and Juliet. “That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Well, perhaps not.
A. It is generally believed that names define who we are.
B. People lend to expect one to have specific trails based on how one's name sounds.
C. English language has developed a rule of names reflecting people s good qualities.
D. It would overwhelm our senses if every word we spoke came with a deeper meaning.
E. Such terms show sound iconicity, or a similarity between a word's form and meaning.
F. There is no evidence that the Kates of the world are more extroverted than the Antics.
G. Pexman will also examine how people's names could affect their chances of being chosen after an interview.
Passage 16
(2024届浙江省9 1联盟高三下学期3月模拟预测)
One of my bad habits is saying “busy” when people ask me how I’m doing. Sometimes it’s because I actually am busy, but other times it’s because that’s what I think I’m supposed to say. That’s what important or promoted people say. 16 So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the time
In 2016, researchers conducted a study to figure it out. 17 And interestingly, these status attributions (归属) are heavily influenced by our own beliefs. In other words, the more we believe that one has the opportunity for success based on hard work, the more we tend to think that people who always skip leisure and work are of higher standing.
That’s why we feel like we have to appear busy, and there’s a real perception that if someone is knee-deep in meetings, emails, and stress, then they’re probably a big deal. 18 According to a recent study, one in five highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout.
19 It sounds self-righteous (自以为是) and sets the wrong tone. Phrases like “I have limited access to email” and “I’ll respond as soon as I get back” sound like you’re being held against your will from working as opposed to making the most of your time off.
That’s why we recently launched the Out of Office Email Generator, a free tool you can use before your next long weekend or trip. 20 Managers need to think twice about emailing their teams on the weekend and talking about how busy they are, and so do leaders.
A.Actually, leading a busy life can be avoidable.
B.But working long hours doesn’t drive better results.
C.A person of high status feels tired when promoted.
D.Busy people are found to be those with high social rank.
E.You can share you won’t be checking the mailbox till you return.
F.This culture of busyness is making it hard to find work-life balance.
G.Personally, I’m going to stop saying “busy” when people ask me how I am.
