Wilma Rudolph is one of the greatest female sprinters (短跑运动员) in Olympic history. As a cleaning lady’s 20th of 21 children, Rudolph lost the use of her left leg after suffering a serious illness at the age of 4. Doctors told her parents she would never walk again without support, but she refused to accept the doctor’s words and began to walk by herself at the age of 9. It wasn’t long before she ran faster than all the children nearby.
At 16, under the guidance of her coach Ed Temple, Rudolph won a medal on the 4×100-meter relay at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. When the 1960 Rome Olympics took places, she had been the mother of a 2-year-old kid. In order to take part in the big event, Rudolph overcame many difficulties in her life, including her illness. What’s more, she has broken the limits placed on black women by society to win three gold medals in sprint (短跑) events. These three gold medals made her one of the most popular runners at the Rome Olympics. Rudolph kept training and retired (退休) at 21. Later, she turned to do a lot of work for poor children.
Unluckily, she died of brain cancer at the age of 54. However, her spirit encouraged lots of people. She was loved and respected by fans around the world.
