(2024·江苏泰州·二模)When a new technology appears, there are many people who worry about its influence on their jobs.
It is believed that with the rise of robotics and AI (人工智能), many people’s jobs are likely to be lost to automation (自动化).
Automation in the work place is nothing new. Machines have been doing boring and repetitive tasks for us for years. In fact, the International Federation of Robotics says that in manufacturing (制造业) there are now 74 robots per 10, 000 employees (员工). That has risen from 66 in 2015.
General Manager of a tech firm Nuance, Bermard Louvat, believes that “AI is a big threat (威胁) to low-skilled jobs, no question.” He also thinks that AI chatbots will replace (取代) most call centre workers within a few years.
And that’s just one industry. A recent report from the McKinsey Global Institute, says that nearly two thirds of all jobs could have at least 30% of their activities automated by 2030.
However, McKinsey also believes that this new technology will also “create new jobs that do not exist (存在) today, much as technologies in the past have done.”
“It’s an evolution (演化) of work,” says Ian Barkin, a robotic process automation expert. As low-skilled jobs are taken on (承担) by AI, people will need to learn new skills. “This calls on us to focus on up-skilling. Technology can lead to job reductions but it doesn’t have to,” says Barkin.
Whether or not robotics and AI will leave us all jobless remains to be seen (还有待观察). Ideas on the subject are mixed. Increased automation could indeed lead to a loss of some jobs, but at the same time it is likely to create many more jobs as new skills are required. Will they balance out I’ll get my AI assistant to reply to you on that one.

① Plants are around us. They are more than just pretty to look at. They give us fruits, vegetables and food we eat. Some plants even provide materials for medicine or building things. But do you know that plants can do something even more amazing They can make our homes, schools and workplaces much healthier.
② We spend a large part of our day indoors. Unluckily, the air inside buildings can often be full of chemicals (化学物质) from many things around us. This poor air quality (质量) can make us feel sick, causing sore eyes and throats, and even making it hard for us to breathe. When the air inside buildings gets really bad, people even call them “sick buildings”.
③ The good news is that plants are like nature’s little superheroes. They have a magic power fighting against bad air. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide (CO )and breathe out oxygen (O ) which we humans need to live. They can also add moisture to the air if it’s too dry, making it more comfortable for us to breathe.
④▲ Scientists have discovered that plants have the ability to take in harmful chemicals, making the air around us safer to breathe. They set up a completely closed building called “bio-home” for experiments. Before they added plants, the air inside was full of chemicals and people found it hard to breathe. But after they added plants, the air got much cleaner and it became easier to breathe. To make the air inside even better, the scientists used different kinds of plants. After a while, the building wasn’t a “sick building” any more. People could go inside without feeling unwell.
⑤So you see, plants are fantastic! They are not only beautiful to look at, but they also provide us with food, help create materials and play an important role in our health. They make our indoor environments cleaner and healthier, making us feel better. Next time you see a plant, remember all the amazing things it can do for us!

①For years, scientists have known how to measure (衡量) the intelligence (智力) of a person. Recently they began to do research into group intelligence. Early research shows that group intelligence is not the total of the intelligence of the persons in it. So what is the secret of a group’s success
②Researchers at a research company and a university have both dealt with this question. They believe they finally have a handle on what makes some work teams successful. In the study of the company, researchers collected information and studied it to find patterns (模式). Are members of effective (有效的) groups friends outside of work Do members with similar personalities work together best They discussed many opinions, but found no patterns to support them. In fact, who was in the team did not make a difference. Instead, the difference between more effective teams and less effective teams was in the interaction (互动) among the members. The university group collected information by using digital badges (数字徽章) that people agreed to wear. They provided much information, including how long people spoke, where they were looking during communication, and their body language.
③Not only the research company but also the university group found that the key to an effective team was how members communicated with each other.
④Among the findings, the most important is that, in effective teams, members spoke for almost the same amount (数量) of time—not at every meeting or communication, but the whole course of a project. The second one was that members showed an understanding of how it might feel to walk in somebody else’s shoes. A high level of these two characteristics makes a member feel comfortable when he expresses his opinions and makes suggestions without fear of being doubted by other members. They believe that others will listen to them and value what they say.
⑤One might say that most of these findings are clear. However, understanding group intelligence can help people make the basic changes that are necessary to increase the chance of a group’s success.

A.have a clear understanding of B.do a lot of research on
C.make a deep discussion about D.have a hard time finding out
12.How did the university group do their research
A.They collected information on how people behaved.
B.They studied the findings of some earlier research.
C.They asked people questions and explained the answers.
D.They discussed their opinions and found common pattern.
13.What can we learn about the researchers’ findings
A.It’s important to divide time equally among group members at one meeting.
B.It is necessary for group members to understand each other’s feelings.
C.It is common for group members to be doubted in an effective group.
D.It is believed that group members are all friends during and outside of work.
14.Which of the following shows the structure of this passage
A. B. C. D.
15.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage

(2024·江苏泰州·二模)How would you like to build a time machine Paper, sticks, glue and string are all you need. Put them together to build a kite. A kite connects you to the past.
No one knows who flew the first kite. It was probably someone in China or perhaps Indonesia. Indonesian fishermen hung fishhooks on kites and sent them out to sea to catch fish. Starting 2,000 years ago, Chinese farmers flew kites to welcome the New Year and bring good luck to Earth.
In China, people also used kites during the war. One Chinese story tells how people put noise makers on kites and flew them at night over the enemy camp. The enemies were afraid of the noise and ran away.
About 1,300 years ago, Chinese travelers took kites to Japan. Soon kites filled the skies there. Kites reached Thailand about 700 years ago. During floods, Thai farmers flew kites over their fields. They hoped the kites would drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today more and more people are crazy about flying kites. They are a passion all over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun together.
Over the years, kites have also helped people understand the natural world. For example, in 1906, cameras hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos helped people plan what to do. Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wright brothers studied how kites flew, which helped them make the first successful airplane.

②Researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones (超声波麦克风) to record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes.
③Three groups of plants were listened to: One group wasn’t watered for five days, another group had the stems (茎) cut off, and the third group was untouched. It turned out that the first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times per hour, while the untouched group only made the sound once per hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Hadany from the team told CNN.
④The researchers didn’t know how the sounds were made, but they believed the noise came from the breaking of air bubbles (泡) in the plants. This meant the noise produced by the plants was not on purpose.
⑤Animals and insects may benefit (受益) from the sound. For example, the sound can tell a butterfly that the plant is under stress and not a proper place to lay eggs on. An animal that wants to eat a plant could also use the sounds to decide what to do, according to Science Focus.
⑥After the experiment, the researchers listened to other plants such as rice, corn and grapes, and found they also made more sounds when stressed. Researchers said the study can help farmers in the future, as they can better take care of farm by “hearing” how plants feel.
26.According to the experiment, we know that _______.

C.Researchers listen to plants. D.Animals benefit from the sounds.
(2024·江苏泰州·二模)① The “April snow” is here! It’s not real snow, of course-it’s catkins (飞絮) from willows (柳树) and poplar trees (杨树) in spring. The female trees grow lots of flowers. When these flowers finish growing, they produce cotton-like seeds (种子) that spread through the air. For some people, this “snow” is not welcomed. Catkins can cause allergies (过敏), making people’s noses, eyes ,and skin uncomfortable.
② Luckily, scientists have found many ways to control catkins. Doing “gender change surgery (变性手术)” on willow and poplar trees is one of them. People cut off the branches (树枝) of female trees and replace (替换) them with branches from male trees. This cuts down the number of catkins. However, this way is slow and expensive. A skilled worker can do the “surgery” on less than ten trees a day. From 2008 to 2018,only around 1,000 trees were treated in Beijing, reported Outlook Weekly in 2022.
③Scientists in Wuxi, Jiangsu, use special injections (注射剂) to reduce the number of catkins on trees. These injections make the trees mainly use their energy to grow bigger and get more leaves, not to reproduce (繁殖) and make catkins. Xu Qinming,an expert in Wuxi, told Science and Technology Daily that this method is safe for the trees. However, the trees need to get injections every year to keep the catkin numbers under control.
④ Other than injections, the trees can take “medicine”. This medicine can be sprayed (喷洒) onto the trees before the catkins form, which can quickly reduce catkin numbers. Still, people need to be careful about how much of the medicine they use and when they use it, or they might hurt the environment.
⑤It is sure that with the development of the science and technology, there will be more convenient ways to deal with the problem.

(2024·江苏泰州·二模)Ma Rui, a top performing graduate at Zhengzhou Foreign Language School, was going to study Korean in Peking University. Here, she shares her tips on memorizing English words in a fast and fun way.
English words can sometimes seem similar but have completely different meanings, and sometimes the different tenses of the same verb may not follow the regular structure. For example, ________. So, how can you effectively memorize and learn English words After learning a bunch of new words, you can write a short story using all of these words. This way, you can better remember the spelling, as well as learning how to use words in various tenses and in the right context. And, it’s fun! You get to break away from the dull act of word memorizing and free your imagination. If you can’t think of anything to write, why not just write about your day and try to use the new words Another method is to create associations (联系) between words. For example, when you try to remember a word that has a suffix like “-ment”, think of some other words that also have this suffix. This way, you can remember many words at the same time. It’s also fun to work together with your classmates. Do some word-guessing games or organize competitions like spelling bees with them during the class breaks. These activities are never boring. When you have company, learning can become a part of your daily life.

(2024·江苏泰州·二模)In a village near the home of the Amur tiger in China, people faced big challenges. The village was important for tigers to move around safely. However, farmlands were often destroyed by wild animals. Zhang Weimin, a local villager, once lost up to 10, 000 yuan because of this. He didn’t understand why they must protect these creatures. In fact, he was not alone. Many people living in this area probably shared the same opinion.
In 2021, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) started projects to help the village and protect the tigers at the same time. At first, people like Zhang Weimin didn’t want to be part of it, as they thought they had to pay more to balance protection and development. For example, sharing resources with wildlife can bring protection value, but farmers may suffer more losses. WWF came up with a plan to get people on board. Step one was to offer the villagers special stoves (炉子) that use less wood and are better for the environment. These stoves also helped the villagers save money on heating. After a series of efforts including door-to-door visits and discussions, the project was gradually accepted by the villagers. Zhang Weimin and other villagers started to see the benefits (利益).
Next, WWF worked with the villagers to find ways to improve green planting techniques. Villagers learned new farming methods and started using earthworms to make the soil better. This helped the crops grow well and also reduced pollution. Zhang Weimin and other villagers began to see that taking care of nature could also help them. They used these new methods on more of their land and shared their experiences with others.
The final step was to get the whole community involved (加入) in protecting the tigers and their home. They learned to work together and share the benefits of protection. This made the villagers more willing to help protect the tigers and their land.
Zhang Weimin’s story shows how people can change their minds about protecting nature when they see the benefits for themselves. By working together and respecting each other’s ideas, we can find ways to take care of the environment and help people live better lives. It’s important for everyone to be part of this effort to make the world a better place for both people and wildlife.

(2024·江苏泰州·二模)Thousands of runners tied their running shoes and rushed out from the starting line while crowds cheered along the course. Marathons (马拉松) in China are getting popular again.
According to the Chinese Athletics Association, a total of 133 marathons across the country have been registered (注册) for the first six months of the year. On March 26, more than 300,000 runners took part in 26 marathon races nationwide, reported China Daily.
Teenagers have also taken part in marathons. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old from Suqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He got first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Jingdong Suqian Marathon held on April 2. For Xu, the race meant months of training and preparation. He ran about 30 to 40 kilometers in local stadiums each week ahead of the run.
“Unlike the 800-meter run at school which is more about speed, a marathon tests a runner’s endurance (耐力) and psychological quality (心理素质),” he told Teens.
When he felt tired during the race, he told himself not to give up. “In long distance running, the only opponent you have to beat is yourself,” Xu added.
Apart from one’s willpower, kindness from the crowds also plays a big part in helping runners get to the finish line. Li Zhouzi from Shanxi took part in a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when she was 10. The cheers from the people along the course really encouraged her.
“When things were hard, people from across the world cheered me on. Even if it was just the words, ‘keep it up’, it meant a lot to me and enabled me to keep going to the end,” Li told Teens.

Poems from Tang and Song dynasties, operas from Yuan dynasty, and novels from Ming and Qing dynasties are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi(772-842), a famous poet and writer in the mid Tang dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
With his poems paying special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people, Liu wrote poems with beautiful music-like words. You may feel it in this poem. Though being translated thoughtfully by experienced Xu Yuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese.
Here is another example, in Liu’s essay An Eulogium on a Humble Cell(《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his humble cell. (2024·江苏泰州·二模)Around the world, people are more and more worried about the environment. Many people now prefer products and companies (公司) that care about the earth and cause less pollution. This need for green products has led large companies to change their business.
Before, customers used cheap plastic (塑料) bags, and then threw them away. But now most supermarkets and stores usually provide reusable shopping bags for them. This causes less waste. They also offer more local products, because less energy is needed for carrying them from one place to another.
To help lower air pollution, big car factories are looking for other ways to control the amount of oil. Cars that use much less oil are very popular. Many companies are also developing fully electric cars. They produce no air pollution at all. Both kinds of cars have another advantage: They are cheaper to run and people don’t need to worry about oil prices.
The airline companies face an even greater green challenge. Airplanes use much more oil than cars. So many airlines are now developing planes that can run on some other kinds of oil. They create less pollution and cost less. The companies are also developing a new kind of planes, and some of them use only solar panels (太阳能板) to fly!
Green businesses used to be popular with only a small group of people. But now, more and more companies have to show they care about the environment. (2024·江苏泰州·一模)Gossip is the information passed from one person to another about other people’s lives. You may think gossip is awful. Even dictionary suggests that it is often unkind or untrue, but this common idea is unreasonable.
Firstly, a study by Robbins and Karan shows that gossip is common but much of it is just people sharing information. For their study, 467 people’s conversations were recorded. Robbins and Karan found that, on average, these people gossiped for 52 minutes a day, with 75% of the time spent communicating non-evaluative (非评价性的) information. Only about 14 % of the gossip was thought malicious, a much smaller percentage (百分比) than the common idea suggests, although to be fair, that was almost double the percentage of positive (积极的) gossip.
Scientists consider gossip to be an important reason why people in the old times were able to stay alive. It helped spread important news, it also provided information about who was trustworthy and who might not work well with others in a group. It allowed humans to build small communities with those who could be trusted, ensuring a greater chance of living. Today, it seems that not much has changed. Gossip still allows us to develop relationships and find out who we can work with best. Gossip also explains the rules of our society. When we hear someone criticize a person’s behaviour, it is obvious that such behaviour is unacceptable and should not be copied. That’s not to say we should pay attention to everything we hear, but it gives us direction.
Of course, these days, our world is changing the nature of gossip. Our networks are now larger, and some gossip can spread like wildfire. And problems come up when gossip includes untrue information. This kind of gossip can destroy people’s lives.
So scientists say that it’s important to share information that can’t hurt others. If we fail to do this, people will see us as someone who can’t be trusted and may even avoid us. Similarly, gossiping to improve one’s own place in society is unacceptable. It’s best to share information that may act as a warning to others or encourage them to behave better. It’s these things that normally push people together rather than make them turn away from each other.

(2024·江苏泰州·一模)A special popular dance has attracted attention widely. There are two stories about the origin (起源) of “Subject Three”. One story connects the dance to a wedding in Wuzhou, where guests danced as part of the celebrations. The other story suggests Guangxi local people go through three tests in their life: singing folk songs (“Subject One”) , slurping rice noodles (“Subject Two”) , and dancing (“Subject Three”) . ①

Cai is among a growing number of Chinese men using plastic surgeries to change their physical appearance to increase their self-confidence. In 2021, the market for beauty medicine in China was worth more than 495 billion yuan. Around 15 percent of customers were males, according to a report by plastic surgery social networking app Gengmei.
There is a rising trend (潮流) of young men turning to plastic surgeries; most male customers are in their teens or 20s. “Some men just want to please themselves, while others hope to improve their possibility in job hunting or dating,” says Wang Jun, vice-president of marketing for Gengmei. “Men are under the same social stress as women and their confidence and competitiveness would be more or less weakened by facial and body weaknesses.”
However, experts point out the risks of plastic surgeries. Fan Jufeng, director of the Plastic Surgery Department at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, does not encourage people, no matter men or women, to “blindly” go under the knife.
Fan also warned the public of the bad influences of live streaming celebrities (流量明星) who spread the misunderstanding that being pretty goes above all else. “Whether to have plastic surgeries is a personal choice, but people should not be addicted (上瘾) to it,” Fan says. “Think twice on it. (2024·江苏泰州·一模)①One morning, I got up early and decided to make an apple pie for my mum. I called my grandma for help, followed a TV program to make jam and waited excitedly. I enjoyed every step so much that I didn’t notice three hours pass by. Although the pie looked terrible and was not that delicious, Mum ate it up and told me it was the best pie that she had ever had. For the first time, I realized that although I didn’t make the pie successfully, I really enjoyed the process.
②The process is important because it brings us something bigger than the result itself. That is, we always have new experiences during the process, which may help us improve our skills or form good relationships with others. If we just concentrate on the result and do not enjoy the process, we will be more likely to feel disappointed and want to give up. As a result, we will never understand the real meaning of success.
③But in this busy world, we see a lot of successful people are in competition. How can we enjoy the process Well, the question has the answer in itself.
④Don’t always compare yourself with others. First of all, we are all different. And success means different things to us. For some, success means being famous, while for others, it may be health or power. Ride your own ride.
⑤Slow down. You need to stop expecting immediate results in what you do and learn to be patient. Impatience leads to unhappiness. Do it slowly, but never stop.
⑥Reward yourself. Divide the process into small steps, and give yourself a reward after completing each of them. Rewarding yourself for small wins can go a long way. For example, if you are in the process of losing weight, enjoy your favourite cake once in a while.

②If you look around the room you are in right now, you’ll probably notice a number of electronics (电器). But can you imagine if they all had to be joined together by wires (电线) Picture the wire snaking along the floor, for example, from your smartphone to your speaker, or connecting your game controller to the computer screen, meaning you could never sit more than a couple of meters away from it. A world of electronics connected by wires would not only be untidy, but a possible danger, too. That’s where Bluetooth comes in. We’ve all heard of it—but what exactly is it
③Bluetooth is a method of short-distance (短距离) wireless communication between electronics that makes use of the power of radio waves. The idea was first thought of by Dr.Jaap Haartsen at Swedish mobile company Ericsson in 1994. Things really stepped up in September 1998 when the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) was set up to develop and spread the technology. Bluetooth 1.0 came out in 1999, and a year later it began to be used in mobile phones and desktop computers. Now Bluetooth has become an increasingly popular way of solving the problem of more and more electronics needing to be connected without having to connect everything together with wires.
④But if you look at the remote control you use to choose the program on TV, you might rightly ask yourself why Bluetooth was such a big deal. After all, connecting objects with infrared signals (红外信号) which can’t be seen had been done before. The problem with remote controls is that they need to keep what is called “line of sight”. If something is standing between the remote control and receiver, it won’t work. Because Bluetooth uses radio waves, the things standing in the way are no longer a problem.
⑤Since its creation in the late 1990s, the technology has become more and more improved and widely used, with the 4 billionth Bluetooth objects shipped (上市) in 2020.

Being bored is no fun, especially at work. However, a recent study from the Research School of Management at the Australian National University suggests that boredom may have an unexpected benefit (好处).
In a study, 52 students were given a boring task of separating red beans from green ones for 30 minutes, while another group of 49 students was asked to create art projects with paper, beans, and glue. Then both groups were asked to spend five minutes on a creative task. , the group that had performed the boring task produced more creative ideas than the group that had taken part in the art project.
“Boredom is not necessarily terrible based on my research,” says the study’s leader, Guihyun Park. “People want to get out of a boring state, so they tend to seek novelty (追求新奇), which can bring out creativity.”

—The preface
When I graduated from college and moved to Washington D.C. in 2017. To cure my loneliness, I made meals at home. And I always shared food with new friends. Because my food was pretty good, everyone asked me for the recipes (秘诀). I started my cooking blog in 2019.
As a little kid, I often sat and watched mum cook. I spent most of my childhood in the kitchen. Since then, I was interested in cooking. Before I could learn my mom’s best dishes, I left for France to go to college in 2015.
When studying in France, I was living alone for the first time in my life. I was crazily homesick. So, I started calling my mom and asking for the recipes for my favorite dishes. My mom didn’t have any recipes. She grew up in the kitchen with her mom too, and my grandma passed on her knowledge orally (口头地). Now it was my turn. Instead of following strict measurements (测量), I learned to cook by tasting and feeling.
At first, my blog was just a space for me to put what I had learned into writing. I didn’t want the secret behind dishes like my mom’s noodles and my dad’s tomato soup to disappear. I wanted to write down every piece of advice I was given in detail. These days, I experiment more. I’m not as strict with myself about making the dishes as I eat them. I just use seasonal food material as I like. My followers are growing and this makes me more confident in the kitchen.
