四、阅读理解
A
Everyone is born with the ability to learn. But whether or not you can do this well depends on your learning habits. Research shows that successful learners have some good habits in common.
Creating an interest in what they learn
Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. Good learners often connect what they need to learn with something they are interested in. For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English. This way they will not get bored.
Practicing and learning from mistakes
Good learners think about what they are good at and what they need to practice more. Remember, “use it or lose it”! Even if you learn something well, you will forget it unless you use it. Practice makes perfect. Good learners are also not afraid of making mistakes. Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone overnight. He succeeded by trying many times and learning from his mistakes.
Developing their study skills
It is not enough to just study hard. You have to know how to study. Good learners find out the best ways to learn well. For example, they may take notes by writing down key words or by drawing mind maps. Good learners also look for ways to review what they have learned. They may do this by reading their notes every day or by explaining the information to another student.
Asking questions
Good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. Knowledge comes from questioning. Learning is a life-long journey because every day brings something new. Everything that you learn l becomes a part of you and changes you, so learn wisely and learn well.

In ancient China, willow branches (柳枝) were often used as a gift to friends and family members when they would leave. Do you know why willow branches are a symbol of saying goodbye
One reason is that willow trees are strong. They can live in any soil (土壤), wet or dry, north or south. Because of this special feature (特征), when saying goodbye to loved ones, giving a willow branch is a way to tell them you hope they will easily get used to their new living environment.
Another reason is that, in Chinese, the pronunciation for the willow tree “柳” is similar to the character “留”. So giving a willow branch in ancient China was like asking the others to stay, even though you know that they must leave.
It’s said that this custom (风俗) became popular during the Han Dynasty (朝代). At that time, Baqiao, a bridge in Chang’an, today’s Xi’an, was a common place to say goodbye. People often stopped there and handed willow branches to people when they were going to depart.

If you put your history notes under your pillow (枕头) and sleep on them the night before an exam, will you do any better in the exam Most of us have hoped this may help. However, knowledge can’t go through the pillow into your brain. But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn while you are asleep.
Scientists aren’t exactly sure how it works, but they have discovered that the brain can learn things during sleeping hours.
In one experiment (实验), researchers gave German speakers some Dutch words to learn. Then, they divided them into three groups. The researchers played the Dutch words for people in Group 1 while they were asleep, without telling these German speakers what they were doing. The sound was low so it didn’t wake them up, and only the newly introduced words were used.
Another group listened to the same words while they were awake. The researchers found the people in Group 1 were better able to identify (识别) and translate (翻译) the words later. This was true only for the words that were played while they slept. The third group listened to the words when they walked. The walkers didn’t have the same success in remembering the words as the sleeping group.
The researchers later found that people had more slow-wave brain activities all over the night. They said that more slow waves made people have a better memory for the new words.
56.When did the researchers play foreign words for people in Group 1 in the experiment
A.Before they went for a walk. B.Before they went to bed.

My ways to learn English
I’d like to share my ways of learning English with all of you.
First of all, it’s a good way to practice by keeping a diary in English. I can use the words, sentence patterns and grammar that I have learned in my diary. Besides, it’s important to read English novels. Try to guess the new words’ meanings instead of looking them up. What’s more, I improve my speaking and listening skills through role-play games. It’s so fun that I enjoy myself very much.
Nothing is impossible for a willing heart. As long as we keep practicing, we will surely learn English well.
