During its running away in the museum, it faced many difficulties like avoiding alarms and cameras. It used its

Aristotle pointed out the four main qualities (特性) of money about 2, 000 years ago. It must be lasting and
easy to recognize, to divide, and to carry about. In other words it must be, “durable, distinct, divisible and portable”.
When we think of money today, we picture it either as round, flat pieces of metal which we call coins. or as printed
paper notes. But there are still parts of the world today where coins and notes are of no use. They will buy nothing,
and a traveller might go hungry if he had none of the particular local (当地) “money” to exchange for food.
Among separate peoples, who are not often reached by traders from outside, trading usually means barter (以
物换物). There is a direct exchange of goods. Perhaps it is fish for vegetables, meat for grain, or various kinds of
food in exchange for pots, baskets, or other goods. For this kind of simple trading, money is not needed, but there is
often something that everyone wants and everyone can use, such as salt, shells (贝壳), or iron. These things—salt,
shells or metals—are still used as money in out-of-the-way (偏远的) parts of the world today.
51.Aristotle said money should be ________.
A.made of metal B.durable, distinct, divisible and portable
C.2, 000 years old D.made of high-quality materials
52.Nowadays we think of money as ________.
A.made of either metal or paper B.pieces of metal
C.printed notepaper D.useful for hungry travelers
53.In some parts of the world a traveller might starve (饥饿) ________.
A.even if his money was of the local kind B.even if he had no coins or notes
C.if he did not know the local rate of exchange D.even if he had plenty of coins and notes
54.Barter usually takes the place of money transactions (交易) where ________.
A.there is only salt B.the people’s trading needs are pretty simple
C.metal tools are used D.money is unknown
55.Which of the following tells the main idea of the passage
A.Aristotle pointed out the chief qualities of money 2, 000 years ago.
B.The important qualities of money are defined (下定义) one after another.
C.Although money was defined 2, 000 years ago, there are still places where barter is sometimes used.
D.It will be of great help if people use salt as money.

In Thailand, people do not eat with chopsticks, which is different from China, Japan and Korea. They use
spoons and forks. 56 People will cut most food before meals. If you need to cut food during meals, use
the side of your spoon first and then use your fork.
57 People in Thailand use spoons more often than forks. If you are left-handed, keep the spoon in
your left hand and the fork in your right hand.
People in Thailand like eating rice. The rice is not on the same plate with the other food. Each person eats rice
on his own plate. It’s not necessary to finish all your rice or all your food. 58 If you eat up all the food
on your plate, it means you want more.
59 Because the host will ask you twice or three times if you want more food. It’s the same as
drinks. During the meal, never empty your cup or glass. When it’s less than half full, your host or neighbor will fill it
again. 60 It’s polite to fill the glass for your neighbor. That means you must keep an eye on your
neighbor’s glass during the meal.

Dear John,
I’m very glad that you love Chinese and want to learn it well.
It is well known that Chinese is difficult to learn. One can’t avoid making a mistake when learning a foreign
language. Here are some suggestions:
First, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Making mistakes is a good way to learn how to say things right. Second,
speak slowly and clearly when you talk to others. In this way, you can make yourself understood easily. Third, you
should spend more time practising listening to and speaking Chinese frequently. Practice makes perfect.
I wish you succeed in learning Chinese.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
