2024 Youth Design Challenge (YDC) saw remarkable participation from across the world. The winners have offered unique, nature-inspired ideas to solve local design challenges.
Green Buoy (浮标)
Oyster farming in South Korea is an industry that contributes to microplastic pollution in the ocean through the breakdown of buoys. Team Design Matter from Seoul created Green Buoy, which is made from a material that breaks down naturally, removing the risk of microplastic pollution and promoting sustainable marine farming. The team took inspiration from a water plant, mimicking its dome-shaped air pockets to provide buoyancy. They designed the buoy connector modules by studying the way that seahorses use their tails to hold firmly onto coral reefs.
The Beenard’s Canopy
Access to clean and affordable drinking water is still not a universal reality, particularly in South Sudan. Team A Squared from Beijing designed the Beenard’s Canopy. Inspired by the Namib Beetle, Moloch Lizard, and the Desert Rattlesnake, their device gathers the dew in the air, channels the collected water through a filter (过滤器) , and stores the water in a container for drinking purpose. The idea addresses the problem of lack of access to clean water by providing an economically practical solution.
Rain Net
In recent years, extreme weather has caused severe flooding in California, and yet, for most of this team’s life, California has been in a drought. Addressing both problems at once, the team designed a rain catchment device, Rain Net. Inspired by how plants move water and the patterns of leaf veins, the Rain Net has got inspiration from the xylem (木质部) in plants, in its design of tubes that guide, collect, and filter rainwater. The invention could be adapted to fit various roofs and the design makes it possible to connect various “nets,” allowing for more than one drainage (排水) system.
21.What problem did Team Design Matter intend to solve
A.Coral reef damage. B.Microplastic pollution.
C.Marine diversity loss. D.Low oyster production.
22.What inspired the solution to urban flooding
A.Desert creatures. B.The shapes of leaves.
C.Water movement in plants. D.The network of plant roots.
23.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To promote YDC program. B.To introduce the 2024 YDC winners.
C.To advertise nature-inspired designs. D.To explain the concept of biomimicry.

The outstanding biography portrays (刻画) the life of the complicated Renaissance (文艺复兴) artist with details. We come to see da Vinci as not only an inventor of music al instruments and early flying machines, but also a notebook keeper and vegetarian, who had trouble finishing many of the projects and paintings he started.
Yet what is most thrilling is getting to know da Vinci the scientist. Isaacson explains how loving science and applying the scientific method to observing the world was really what made da Vinci a great artist and, Isaacson argues, a genius. Da Vinci was fascinated with observing and understanding phenomena in nature. He wanted to know about everything around him, in minute detail, Isaacson writes. He wondered about questions “most people over the age of ten no longer puzzle about”— for instance, how the tongue of a woodpecker works.
To learn about the world, da Vinci combined his own observations with experimentation. Never formally schooled, “he preferred to induce (归纳) from experiments rather than deduce (推理) from theoretical principles.” Isaacson explains. He recorded his observations, looked for patterns among them, and then tested those patterns through additional observation and experimentation.
When he became fascinated with the idea that he could invent flying machines, he observed various birds and filled notebooks with the function and speed at which their wings flapped. That’s why Isaacson calls da Vinci an exemplar of this scientific method. He goes on: “Galileo, born 112 years after Leonardo, is usually credited with being the first to develop this kind of approach and is often regarded as the father of modern science.” There can be no doubt that this honor would have been bestowed (赠与) on Leonardo da Vinci had he published his scientific writings during his lifetime.
Da Vinci’s emphasis on empirical observation also helped him improve his art. First, he was able to use what he learned from looking at nature to paint and draw. His studies of the body, animals, motion, shadow and light, perspective and proportion helped him better understand what he was seeing in front of him, and render(表现) it in art more accurately and finely than anyone else of his time. Most importantly, his ability to connect art and science, helped him innovate in his work. Da Vinci made surprisingly diverse series of discoveries, including conceptualizing the helicopter and solar power and advancing knowledge about everything from the reproductive organs to botany. This genius is also what drew Isaacson to Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs as subjects: They’ re all innovators who were inspired by and drew connections between art and science.
“Leonardo da Vinci is the ultimate example of the main theme of my previous biographies: how the ability to make connections across disciplines — arts and sciences, humanities and technology — is a key to innovation, imagination, and genius,” Isaacson writes. And this wonderful book is a reminder, in a time of increasingly narrow specialization and focus, that the methods of Renaissance men like da Vinci are as relevant as ever.
24.What is the highlight of da Vinci’s biography
A.His unfinished paintings. B.His preference for vegetables.
C.His spirit of exploring science. D.His opposition to formal education.
25.Why does Isaacson mention Galileo in the book
A.To introduce his important findings in science.
B.To illustrate the significance of da Vinci’s research method.
C.To show the challenges faced by da Vinci during his lifetime.
D.To memorize his contributions as the father of modern science.
26.Which of the following statements is true
A.Da Vinci improved his art and drew more accurately by painting mostly in the natural world.
B.The methods of Renaissance men like da Vinci can still apply to contemporary scientific research.
C.Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs are as famous as da Vinci for combining art with science.
D.Da Vinci failed to publish his scientific writing because the scientific method was inaccessible at that time.
27.What might be the best title for the passage
A.How a Genius Changed the World B.The Features of Renaissance Art
C.How Science Shaped His Art D.The Comparison between Art and Science
C
Mark Temple, a medical molecular (分子的) biologist, used to spend a lot of time in his lab researching new drugs for cancer treatments. He would extract DNA from cells and then add a drug to see where it was binding (结合) along the chemical sequence (序列). Before he introduced the drug, he’d look at DNA combination on a screen to see what might work best for the experiment, but the visual readout of the sequences was often unimaginably large.
So Temple wondered if there was an easier way to detect favorable patterns. “I realized I wanted to hear the sequence,” says Temple, who is also a musician. He started his own system of assigning notes to the different elements of DNA — human DNA is made of four distinct bases, so it was easy to start off with four notes — and made a little tune out of his materials. This trick indeed helped him better spot patterns in the sequences, which allowed him to make better choices about which DNA combinations to use.
Temple isn’t the first person to turn scientific data into sound. In the past 40 years, researchers have gone from exploring this trick as a fun way to spot patterns in their studies to using it as a guide to discovery. And the scientific community has come to realize that there’s some long-term value in this type of work. Temple, who from that first experiment has created his own algorithmic software to turn data into sound, believes the resulting music can be used to improve research and science communication.
So Temple decided to add layers of sound to make the sonification (可听化) into songs. He sees a clear difference between “sonification” and “musification”. Using sound to represent data is scientific, but very different from using creative input to make songs. The musical notes from DNA may be melodic to the human ear, but they don’t sound like a song you’d listen to on the radio. So when he tried to sonify the virus, he added layers of drums and guitar, and had some musician friends add their own music to turn the virus into a full-blown post-rock song.
Temple sees this work as an effective communication tool that will help a general audience understand complex systems in biology. He has performed his songs in public at concert halls in Australia.
28.What is Mark Temple’s purpose in turning DNA data into sound
A.To aid the process of his experiments. B.To develop his creative ability.
C.To make his drug more powerful. D.To help him fight boredom.
29.What can we learn about Temple’s system
A.Its effect remains to be seen. B.It has produced satisfying results.
C.It is too complicated to operate. D.It failed to work as expected.
30.Why did Temple try to make the virus sound like real music when sonifying it
A.To enhance people’s understanding of science.
B.To show his talent in producing music.
C.To get rid of public fear of the virus.
D.To remind people of the role of science in art creation.
31.What does the text mainly talk about
A.Why music can be the best way to present science.
B.How scientists help the public understand science.
C.Why scientists are turning molecules(分子) into music.
D.How music helps scientists conduct their research.

Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese writer Liu Cixin. Until four years ago, Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu’s imagination took flight. He did what he might never have the chance to do in real life — wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit planets light-years away.
But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably hadn’t expected that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015. Perhaps neither did he think that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, nor that on Nov 9 in Washington DC, he would win the 2018 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s the first time a Chinese writer has ever won the award.
In his acceptance speech, Liu said that he owed his imagination to Arthur C. Clarke (1917 — 2008), a famous UK sci-fi author. He said that reading Clarke’s 1968 classic novel 2001: A Space Odyssey in the early 1980s had a great effect on him.
“My mind opened up like never before. I felt like a narrow river finally seeing the sea,” Liu said. “That night, in my eyes, the starry sky was completely different from the past. For the first time in my life, I was awed (充满敬畏的) by the mystery of the universe.”
But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay rational (理性的). In The Three-Body Problem, for example, Liu tells a tale of aliens invading Earth. But unlike other alien stories, Liu talks more about relationships between civilizations, rules of survival, and the meanings of life. And in The Wandering Earth, Liu looks ahead to the day when our solar system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live. However, all his visions and solutions are based on “hard science”. Liu’s works aren’t simply daydreams.
32.What do we know about Liu Cixin
A.He became a full-time writer when he was young.
B.He is the first Asian to win the Arthur Clarke Award.
C.He is the first Chinese winner of the Hugo Award.
D.He dreamed about wandering in space from childhood.
33.Liu Cixin’s words are used mainly to show ___________.
A.his feeling after reading Clarke’s work B.his love of reading science fiction
C.his interest in mysteries of the universe D.his confusion when he started writing
34.Why did the author mention The Three-Body Problem and The Wandering Earth
A.To prove that Liu Cixin’s works relate science to reality.
B.To explain how Liu Cixin came up with his ideas.
C.To show that Liu Cixin has a powerful imagination.
D.To compare the different writing styles in the two books.
35.What’s the text mainly about
A.Liu Cixin’s contributions to science fiction.
B.Liu Cixin’s achievements and writing style.
C.How Liu Cixin became a sci-fi writer.
D.How Liu Cixin started a new sci-fi style.

Is there a link between social media and depression 36 It’s complicated.
Sometimes, looking through Instagram just makes you feel bad. You try not to envy your friends, but they always seem to be traveling somewhere cool, eating something fancy, or looking cute in perfect just- rolled- out- of- bed hair. 37 Clearly, social media isn’t all bad.
38 Things like cyberbullying (网上欺凌), screen addiction, and being exposed to endless filtered images (美颜) that make it impossible not to make comparisons between yourself and others often make the news. In July, a big study came out in the journal JAMA titled “Association of Screen Time and Depression in Adolescence.” This big headline seems to confirm what a lot of people have been saying — 39
The study followed over 3,800 adolescents over four years as part of a drug and alcohol prevention program. Part of what the investigators measured was the teens’ amount of screen time, including time spent on social media, as well as their levels of depression symptoms. 40 That was true both when the researches compared between people and compared each person against their own mental health over time.
A.Screen time is horrible for young people.
B.Is there anyone in your family who uses stamps
C.Social media is a valuable way to cope with stress.
D.Do Facebook and Instagram have a negative impact on your mental health
E.There are also times when you laugh at funny memes and catch up with old friends.
F.They found those who used social media more had higher depression scores.
G.However, people are increasingly suspecting the potential problems of social media.

Our Extraordinary Brains
The 1.4-kilogram organ inside each person's head is the most complex part of the human body. This remarkable organ, the brain, not only 41 body movements and shapes people's behavior but also decodes sensory inputs and is the seat of intelligence. These facts have been scientifically proven, but a lot of what we believe about the brain is based on 42 .
What percentage of your brain do you actually use The statistic that has been circulating for about a century is 10 percent, sometimes 20, suggesting that we haven't fully tapped into our full mental 43 . But that is merely a misconception. While our brains do have some reserves, scans have shown that a large portion of our brains are 44 in even the simplest of tasks.
If you're artistic, you might 45 that you are mostly drawing upon the right side of your brain. If you're logical, you may have been led to believe you favor your left brain. While both of these hemispheres (脑半球) do exist, one is not considered to be 46 over the other. They are intricately (错综复杂地) connected, with both hemispheres 47 in all mental activities.
Parents want “smart” children and perhaps have heard that playing classical music to their unborn child or to their infant increases their chances of being intelligent. However, a (n) 48 analysis of relevant studies fails to establish a direct correlation between brain development and 49 to classical music.
Many believe that a person's genes totally determine intelligence. While genetics 50 plays an important role, other factors such as nutrition, education, home environment, and available resources also 51 significantly.
The topic of a child's capability to learn multiple languages at the same time has sparked 52 debate. The belief that children will 53 languages and not develop any language properly has been the basis for educational policies for years. 54 to this belief, evidence indicates that young children gain a better knowledge of language structures overall when learning two languages simultaneously.
Such myths have persisted for ages, 55 never-ending discussions. Yet one unquestionable truth remains: the brain is truly an amazing organ.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles ” “Oh, yes…but I don’t have money on me,” she replied. “That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.” The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.“What is it ” asked the man kindly. “Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered Mother’s familiar face and weathered (沧桑的) hands. “Why did I not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Hi, everyone!
These days, we all seem to be talking about the news that an electronic reading room will be opened. It is exciting indeed! An E-reading room, in our group view, is undoubtedly multi-functional. It is where we can keep ourselves informed of the latest news, where we can have access to various learning resources and where we can solve problems using modern technology, Chat GPT, for example. So an E-reading room, in today’s information age, can conveniently and efficiently meet our growing thirst for more information and knowledge. Hope that the E-reading room will be available soon!
That’s all. Thank you!

Nearing the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house. “Where could my mother be ” she wondered. “Was she still angry with me ” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. She remembered her rudeness to her mother. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt rather ashamed, and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head and saw the familiar face of her mother. “Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” she said, tired and relieved. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother’s arms. “Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me.” She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hearing this, her mother smiled, patting her back gently.
