Following the covered wagon train often, the wind had lifted the landscape into billows of dust falling on everyone and everything until there seemed only one color and one sound.

People today are beco ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ming increasingly aware that a proper diet is the foundation of good health. If we don’t have a regular diet of proper food, we don’t have the fuel to perform at our best. However, some people think not eating breakfast doesn’t matter a lot, though eating it is important. Get the truth behind this common misconception and other meal frequency and timing meals.
Will eating br ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eakfast every day help me lose weight
Yes, eating the morning meal can actually help you shed pounds. People who have breakfast are less likely to eat diet-busting(破坏的) junk food and are more likely to exercise later in the day, as studies show. People who skip breakfast, on the other hand, usually make up the calories — and then some — before day's end. Researchers found that 78 percent of the men and women included in the National Weight Control Registry — who have maintained an average weight loss of 66 pounds for more than 5 years — eat breakfast every day.
Is "grazing" re ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ally healthier than eating three square meals a day
No. Eating many small meals throughout the day is probably not better for you than three main meals, the traditional amounts of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The idea that "grazing" is healthier comes from a few old studies showing that eating frequent meals throughout the day may burn more fat and lower insulin (胰岛素)levels. But later studies have found no benefit to grazing. It's not healthier than eating three squares, according to the American Dietetic Association.
I've always eaten most of my calories at dinner. If I'm healthy, is there any reason for us not to keep doing this
Hard to say. Instinctively, it sounds like a bad idea. Yet "one-mealers" tend to eat less food totally, scientists say, so your dining habit may actually help you stay tidy and attractive. On the other hand, one small, brief study by USDA scientists found that eating just one daily meal may cause small increases in blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol(胆固醇). If your annual blood tests show a rise in any key risk factors for heart disease or diabetes, it is high time for you to reconsider your meal strategy.
Will bedtime snacks make you fat
No. But that's not permission for you to eat cookies before going to bed every night. Consuming more calories than you burn through physical activity produces big loose stomachs and weak legs no matter what time you overeat. A habit of snacking in front of the television every evening will lead to weight gain, but no more so than having a six-egg pancake for breakfast or conquering a bag of beans with sweet food at your desk every afternoon.
The final word
Eat fewer calories than you need in a day and you will lose weight. Eat breakfast because it will help you control calories better, not because it's a magic meal. Eat the number of meals that keeps you satisfied and energized. No one plan is best for everyone.

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注意:每空格1个单词。
One of the advan ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tages of being self-employed is that the profit the business makes belongs to the owner. If the self-employed person is successful in business, he or she has the chance to earn plenty of money and even become wealthy. The profit earned by a self-employed person is the reward for his or her effort, ability, and creativity. Thus, a second advantage of being self-employed is that a person’s intelligence and abilities have a direct effect on his or her earnings. People who have outstanding abilities or intelligence often find they can earn far more through self-employment than they can through working as an employee. A third advantage of being self-employed is that a person can control their working hours. While not all self-employed people are completely free to choose whatever hours they want to work, most of them have more control over this area than the people who work for salaries or wages.
As with most thing ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s in life, being self-employed is not without problems first, being one’s own boss places the responsibility for success directly on that individual’s shoulders. Abilities and intelligence will be put to the test. Everyone has some weaknesses and is less capable in some things than in others. These weaknesses will affect how successful a self-employed person is. Second, though the self-employed can earn considerable profits with a successful business, losses can force them out of business and, in some instances, place them in debt. A third disadvantage concerns income security. Self-employed people have no guaranteed income. Their earnings can vary greatly from year to year, depending on business conditions. Salaried people, on the other hand, can generally count on continued earnings from year to year. In addition, salaried people often enjoy fringe benefits(额外补贴), which are all of the benefits provided for employees in addition to wages and salaries. One of these benefits may be insurance paid for by the employer that continues the employee’s salary in the event of sickness or accident. Many self-employed people do not have such protection, unless they put money aside themselves.

Ambition is a necess ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ary quality in life. It is the force which drives us on to use whatever talent we have got. If we haven’t got some degree of ambition, these talents will not be used for our own and other’s benefit. We must continually want to be better than we are. Without ambition we are just jellyfish that flop through life. We only react to events; we don’t try to control them.
Ambition, however, can have several defects.
First of all ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )it can be unrealistic. We may not be able to see the limits of our own abilities, so we do ambitious things that are completely beyond us. Our career masters can see our good qualities and our limitations objectively. They may tell us that we haven’t the ability to deal with people and would make good businessmen. We refuse to take their evaluation. We keep on trying. Many years and many disappointments later we are forced to accept their judgment. But what a waste of time our ill-founded ambition has caused us!
Secondly, our ambitio ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n can be too concentrated. We devote our attention to one narrow aim, such as getting distinctions in our science subjects. Everything that may draw us away from this aim is cut out of our lives. In the end we get our distinctions. But what damage we have caused ourselves in the process! We are isolated beings who only care about a particular examination. And we probably won’t make good scientists. We lack the breadth of view necessary for success in higher studies.
Thirdly, our am ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )bition can be limited to lifeless objectives. We want to gain money, or power, or membership of some circles. Persons who feel inferior try to make up by seeking the respect of others through possessions of these artificial signs of worth.
Fourthly, our amb ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ition may be self-centered. Instead of directing some of our ambition towards community improvement we may exploit members of the community in the interests of self-advancements. In later life we may be ambitious for the success of our children but we regard this success as only a further mark of our own success.
Ambition is ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) necessary in the lives of individuals---necessary for their own improvement and for the improvement of the community in which they live. But, like all blind forces, it must be directed if it is not to cause disaster. It must be tightly controlled by the head and the heart. Otherwise ambition may demand too high a price in terms of human qualities.

Asthma(哮喘) is a long- ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lasting breathing disease that affects millions of Americans, many of whom are children. People who get asthma will suffer from lack of breath, difficulty in breathing or coughing---which are caused by the tightening of the muscles in airways. Untreated asthma can lead to poor lung function and death, but asthma can also be effectively controlled with proper treatments.
Research is ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )discovering genes that contribute to the development of asthma. This development has pointed researchers to the role of indoor and outdoor pollution as environmental factors that contribute to the increased occurrence of asthma.
The Indoor Pollution
Indoor pol ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lution has increased with the developments in building materials and in heating and air conditioning systems. In addition to poisonous gases that come from paint, other materials like dust and perfumes used in household products such as washing powder are recycled continuously through the house, winter and summer.
Unlike the d ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ays before central heating or before whole-house air conditioning, these materials and chemicals cannot get out of modern homes. Most often, they cause breathing problems in the members of the family with the least-developed autoimmune(自身免疫的) systems. Proper venting(通风)and use of environmentally-friendly building materials and carpeting can help reduce the presence of these chemicals.
The Out door pollution
Researchers hav ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e also established outdoor pollution’s role as a probable cause of asthma. Asthma has been proven to result from some fuel products. Smog and the small matters carried by it have been recognized as a factor which leads to asthma since the 19th century when London saw more and more diseases in the industrial population. Industrial pollutants and other chemicals which are produced in water treatment and open treated water like that found in the swimming pools also contribute to increased cases of asthma as well as other illnesses.
Those most affec ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ted by the increase of industrial and environmental pollution are children. Although much has been done to control the levels of pollution in the US, there still remains much to do as it is a worldwide phenomenon. Until an international effort can be made to limit carbon emissions, the occurrence of environmental asthma will probably continue to increase.
The __1__ between asthma and air pollution
The __2__ of asthma ● lack of breath ● difficulty in breathing ● coughing
The possible __3__ of untreated asthma ● poor lung function ● death
__4__ contributing to the increased asthma Indoor pollution ●It is __5__ by ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) building materials and heating and air conditioning systems.●__6__ some poisonous gases, dust and perfumes worsen pollution.●Some material and chemicals __7__ in modern homes.

The most exciti ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng part of the bin Laden drama took place on the ground in Pakistan, but the courageous military operation would have been impossible to pull off without a web of orbiting satellites.
The proof of tha ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t came out today in accounts of the plan to get bin Laden: Once the CIA and the U.S. military focused in on bin Laden’s potential hiding place in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad, views from above could be turned into a detailed map of the building, most likely with the help of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. The map was so detailed that the operation’s planners could build a copy of the building for rehearsals (演习).
“The outer f ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eatures of the building were studied intensively,” John Brennan, the White House’s deputy national security adviser for homeland security and anti-terrorism, told journalists today.
The Pentagon (五角大楼 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )) used a group of military satellites for imagery in a variety of wavelengths, but it also picks up pictures from commercial satellite companies such as GeoEye and DigitalGlobe — the same companies that provide mapping data for websites such as Google Earth. A series of satellite pictures can be used to trace the history of the building site from an empty lot in 2001, to a newly built complex in 2005, to an even more built-out neighborhood this January.
Tracking down the prec ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ise location of bin Laden’s base on satellite imagery occupied the attention of geo-geeks for hours, until the CIA provided the solution to the puzzle. Postings on the Google Earth blog trace every step of the hunt.
Once the decision ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )was made to go ahead with the surprise attack, another set of satellites came into play: A space-based military satellite system that provides a secure communication channel between the warfighters in the field and the experts directing the operation from far off. Even President Obama could monitor the action in real time from the White House Situation Room, just as CIA Director Leon Panetta could from the spy agency’s headquarters.
The main satellites ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )involved here are the Defense Satellite Communications System, or DSCS-III and the Milstar system. Milstar has more capability for secure communications, but it doesn’t offer as much signal bandwidth as DSCS-III. The satellite system links up with communication terminals that are installed at bases on the ground, placed on ships stationed offshore, or even carried around by the helicopter fighters. The Navy SEALs who took on the “get bin Laden” mission typically wear helmet-cameras that can send a stream of coded video halfway around the world.
These high-tech surve ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )illance (监视) and communication tools finally provided the U.S. military with a high-tech edge over bin Laden and his supporters, who had to go low-tech to avoid detection. But it was just that very low-techiness that gave away to the CIA: The fact that a million-dollar complex had no phone lines or Internet links led analysts to suspect that they had the right target in their sights.

Canada’s wealth com ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )es from the exploitation of its rich natural resources and from the work of its citizens. Canadians are employed in a variety of jobs. All of these jobs can be grouped into one of three categories: extractive industries, manufacturing industries and service industries.
Industries that t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ake raw materials from the natural environment are called extractive or primary industries. Canada has a wealth of natural resources. The extractive industries that have been developed to exploit these natural resources make an important contribution to the wealth of our economy. Without these extractive industries, and the money they bring from other countries, Canada’s economy could not exist in its present form. Yet only a small percentage of Canada’s labour force works in extractive industries. Extractive industries rely on labour-saving machines instead of human labour.
Manufacturing indust ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ries process the products of extractive industries into finished products Manufacturing industries transform raw materials into many different forms to be used by consumers or by other companies. This processing may be done in one or more stages. For example, iron ore is transformed into steel in factories. This is called primary manufacturing. The steel is then sent to companies for further processing into cars, mining equipment, machines, nails, and other products-such as bicycle frames. This is called secondary manufacturing.
Manufacturing ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) industries are located in many towns and cities across panies try to build their factories in densely populated areas because they want to near the people who buy their products. If they locate near their customers, then they save money on shipping costs. Manufacturing industries provide more jobs to Canadians than do extractive industries. Yet the number of people employed in manufacturing is still small in comparison to the third category, services. As with extractive industries, manufacturing process use many machines that require relatively few workers.
Service industr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ies provide services needed by the extractive and manufacturing industries, and by society in general. Without these services, society could not operate. The majority of Canadian workers do not produce “goods” in their jobs. Instead, they provide “services” for others. The range of services is very great and includes such things as retailing, office work, education, health care, communications, government, transportation, and personal services.
Service indu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )stries in one form or another are spread over the entire country. In every community there are stores, banks, schools, police forces, and dozens of other services. The majority of service industries are found in town and cities because services are provided for people and there are many more people in urban areas,

“Four Tigers” Ceremony of the Tu Minority
Heigouding Village, L ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )edu County in the west of Qinghai province is a place where many people of the Tu minority have lived for centuries. As the little village is comparatively closed to the outside world, a custom called “Four Tigers” was created 200 years ago to protect its inhabitants(栖息地) from sickness and bad luck.
Every year the cerem ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ony is held on the eve of January 15th according to the Chinese lunar calendar to frighten off ghosts and evil souls, and to pray for peace.
Normally four ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )local villagers are selected to be the “tigers” in the ceremony. At first, they gathered with village elders at the mountain-god temple to offer sacrifices of wine, food and incense, and to ask the god to help the tigers. Then the tigers were adorned with herbs, candles and two batches of incense to serve as the tiger’s ears. Two red ribbons held in their mouths represented the tiger’s tongue. The “Tigers” drank wine, knelt and kowtowed to the mountain god before they received Hada, a kind of white silk scarf representing respects and good luck, from the village head with firecrackers crackling.
As night fel ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )l, the candles on the tigers’ bodies were lit and the tigers began their visits to one household after another. Villagers followed, shouting “Tigers are coming!” The elder from each household welcomed the tigers at the gate, while the rest of the family knelt down in the courtyard. Firecrackers were set off, a toast made and candies, meat and wine were presented to the villagers following the tigers. After twirling (快速转动)in three circles in the courtyard while those present kowtowed and prayed, the tigers went through every corner of every room to drive away any hiding ghosts. If there was a sick person in the house, the tigers jumped around him or her, scratched their body and said lucky words to drive away diseases and ghosts. After the ceremony, the family would present wine and food to the tigers. Then, shouting “The tigers are leaving!” the whole family saw them off.
After visiti ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng all 30 or 40 households, the herbs were removed from the tigers and burned, to indicate that all the ghosts had been conquered. Then the villagers knelt and kowtowed with the sound of firecrackers, marking the end of the ceremony.
The tiger image exist ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s in other minority groups, also. In ancient times, people entrusted their happiness to gods. The “four tigers” ceremony is vividly held in memory of ancient times and a living fossil for academics studying the lives of ancient people. As it is not popular nowadays, this cultural heritage is on the edge of extinction and needs to be rescued.

People can swal ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )low small amounts of BPA as they eat or drink. An industry Web site says more than forty years of safety research shows that products made with bisphenol A are safe. But others question the safety of BPA.Now, a large study has linked it to diabetes and heart disease in adults.
Researchers divid ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed almost one thousand five hundred American adults into four groups based on BPA levels in their urine (尿液).All the levels were within the limits considered safe by the United States Food and Drug Administration.Yet the study found that the highest group was more than twice as likely as the lowest group to have heart disease or diabetes, or both.
The Food and Drug ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) Administration and chemical industry officials said the study does not show that bisphenol A caused the diseases. The researcher who led the study, David Melzer at England’s University of Exeter, agrees. He says the findings must be reproduced and that other studies are also needed.
But he also says ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) that if BPA is a cause of these conditions, then just reducing contact with it might prevent some cases. The study appeared last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Earlier this mont ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )h, the United States government scientists from the National Toxicology Program released a final report on BPA.They found that the chemical is of “some concern” for effects on development of the brain in fetuses (胎儿), infants and children. They made the same finding for behavioral (动作的) effects.

For years, the a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )utomobile industry has been testing vehicles that use hydrogen as fuel. Now, people across the United States have had a chance to see and even drive cars that get power from hydrogen fuel cells (燃料电池).
But the hydr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ogen fuel cell is not a new idea. The fuel cell was first invented by Sir William Grove of Britain in 1839. Since then, many different designs, have been invented. There is one place where fuel cells are a proven technology: in space. The American space agency used fuel cells in its Apollo spaceships in the twentieth century.
The most useful fuel ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) cell for transportation purposes is the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane, or P.E.M. fuel cell. It is simple and can operate at temperatures of sixty to eighty degrees Celsius. That is much lower than other fuel cell designs. A P.E.M. fuel cell has two sides divided by a thin membrane (膜). Hydrogen gas is forced through one side where it comes in contact with a reactive material containing the metal platinum(铂). The membrane separates the electrons(电子) from the protons(质子) in the hydrogen atoms. The protons pass through it to the other side of the fuel cell. But the electrons are captured to do work; like powering a motor. Oxygen from the air is forced into the other side of the fuel cell. There, the gas meets the protons that have passed through the membrane. They combine to form water and heat. A single fuel cell does not produce a lot of electricity. But when many fuel cells are combined, they can produce enough electricity to power a vehicle. The product of the chemical reaction that powers fuel cells is water. This makes fuel cells a very clean technology.
Hydrogen fuel ce ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ll cars have been slow to develop because of many technical problems that have to be solved. For example, it is unclear how long the membranes in P.E.M. fuel cells will last. Also, fuel cells need water for their chemical reactions. They must be designed to start easily at low temperatures and in dry climates. And smaller, less costly fuel cells must be designed before they can truly take the place of gasoline engines. Now more models of fuel cell vehicles are being tested than ever before. The threat of climate change and the high cost of oil have increased interest in these vehicles that do not cause pollution.

Everyone need ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s a break, and vacations are not meant for serious study. Instead, they’re a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book. The Spring Festival is coming up so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey or while you’re hanging out with the family.
Before getting into th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e recommendations, we need to determine your English reading comprehension level so you don’t pick a book which is so challenging that it’s stressful or so simple that it’s boring.
If you’re at the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )beginner level, there are two options: reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. This will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you’re already familiar with the story. If you’re at the intermediate level, popular books like pop fiction, mysteries and thrillers are good options, as they’ll be guaranteed page turners and that will increase the possibility of your getting all the way through the book. For advanced readers, science fiction, classic works of literature or contemporary prize winners (Booker, Nobel, Pulitzer) are good options.
The most important ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )thing is to pick a book that you’re really interested in. When I pick up a new book in Chinese, the first few chapters are always really hard to get through, as I have to get accustomed to the way the individual author uses the language. But after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if I get involved in the story. Some of my favorite Chinese-language eye candy are books that are series like Brothers by Yu Hua or The Dancer by Hai Yan. I like them because there’s always a lot of action and story development to keep me involved, which helps me make it through those first few chapters.
Another great way to k ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eep yourself motivated over the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve and discuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by SMS or e-mail. I’m currently doing that with my friend Laura. We’ve been doing this since we were classmates in Chinese at college.
Some quick recommen ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )dations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; anything by US writer Michael Crichton or British writer Agatha Christie; and if you like horror, US writer Stephen King is always unusual and fun. But really you should just find a topic or author that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!
