Part 1
One day, Tony witnessed an interesting interaction in the park. People's gestures varied a lot. Some made appropriate gestures while others didn't. By contrast, Tony approved of the ones that demonstrated respect. He saw two people who seemed to have identical expressions at first. But when he made inferences, he found they actually differed. One person's favour was shown by a slight bow at the waist. However, there was a barrier of misunderstanding. Someone made a fake gesture that led to anger. Tony realized that not all gestures are reliable for interpreting people's feelings.
Part 2
This incident made Tony think about nonverbal communication more deeply. He remembered a trial he had seen where even a slight movement could have a big impact. There were twins in the courtroom, and their nonverbal cues were interesting to observe. Tony started to make an internal assessment of their behavior.
He saw one of the twins straighten up when answering a question, while the other slump slightly. Their poses and the way they bent their bodies seemed to reveal something about their feelings. Tony wanted to clarify this. In other words, he was trying to assess what their body language really implied.
An educator in the audience was ticking off points. Tony noticed a tendency for people to lower their chins when they were nervous. But in this case, it was barely noticeable. This whole experience made Tony realize the complexity of nonverbal communication.
Part 3
Tony was so occupied by his thoughts that he started to stare at the ceiling. He didn't want to be distracted from his analysis. He perceived that it was not easy to distinguish the true meanings behind nonverbal cues.
The anxiety in his chest grew. He felt a bit embarrassed and ashamed that he had merely scratched the surface before. He called on himself to do better. He didn't want to be bothered by his previous lack of understanding.
He saw someone start to weep in the corner, perhaps because of a conflict at work. Tony inquired about what was wrong. Ultimately, he realized that he needed to adjust his way of thinking and not intervene too quickly. He had to react based on a full understanding of all the components of nonverbal communication. The tone of the whole situation made him more determined to learn more.
