请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注意:每空格1个单词。
Everyone needs a break ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), and vacations are not meant for serious study. Instead, they’re a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book. The Spring Festival is coming up so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey or while you’re hanging out with the family.
Before getting ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )into the recommendations, we need to determine your English reading comprehension level so you don’t pick a book which is so challenging that it’s stressful or so simple that it’s boring.
If you’re at the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )beginner level, there are two options: reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. This will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you’re already familiar with the story. If you’re at the intermediate level, popular books like pop fiction, mysteries and thrillers are good options, as they’ll be guaranteed page turners and that will increase the possibility of your getting all the way through the book. For advanced readers, science fiction, classic works of literature or contemporary prize winners (Booker, Nobel, Pulitzer) are good options.
The most impor ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tant thing is to pick a book that you’re really interested in. When I pick up a new book in Chinese, the first few chapters are always really hard to get through, as I have to get accustomed to the way the individual author uses the language. But after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if I get involved in the story. Some of my favorite Chinese-language eye candy are books that are series like Brothers by Yu Hua or The Dancer by Hai Yan. I like them because there’s always a lot of action and story development to keep me involved, which helps me make it through those first few chapters.
Another great way to k ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eep yourself motivated over the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve and discuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by SMS or e-mail. I’m currently doing that with my friend Laura. We’ve been doing this since we were classmates in Chinese at college.
Some quick recommenda ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tions: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; anything by US writer Michael Crichton or British writer Agatha Christie; and if you like horror, US writer Stephen King is always unusual and fun. But really you should just find a topic or author that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!

请认真阅读下列短文, 并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注意:每空格1个单词。
Interviewing someone ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) for a job is not as easy as it looks. First, as the interviewer, you’re tasked with finding the person who will not only do the job well but also fit in well with the other employees.
You have to make ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )an evaluation of abstract qualities that can’t be found on a résumé. Because you have to repeat the process for every potential employee, you end up asking question after question, applicant after applicant.
Still, interviewe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rs need to be told something: “What is your biggest weakness ” is not a good question. It just isn’t.
Now, job seeke ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rs have to understand that interviewers want to find some way to know what makes an applicant different from others. Asking questions that are seemingly impossible to answer is one way to see who can think creatively. Then what may be a proper way to respond to such a question
Honesty, with a twist(新手法)
“‘What are your ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )three strengths and three weaknesses ’ is a classic, but not too many people know how to answer this,” says Kenneth C. Wisnefski, founder and CEO of WebiMax, an online marketing company.
“As an interviewer ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), we want to hear strengths that describe initiative(主动性), motivation and dedication. The best way to respond is to include these qualities into specific ‘personal statements.’”
“Similarly, weakne ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sses should be positioned as a strength that can benefit the employer.”
“I like to hear a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )pplicants state an exaggerated strength, and put an interesting twist on it. An example of this is, ‘My initiative is so strong, that sometimes I take on too many projects at a time.’”
This answer leads ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )with a strength that employers want —initiative —and still acknowledges that you’re not perfect.
Although you migh ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t consider this acknowledgement too honest, it works because it proves you’re being honest.
Honesty, with progress
When you con ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sider what your weaknesses are, think about how you have attempted to overcome them. No one is perfect, so pretending that you are a perfectionist will come across as insincere.
Debra Davenpo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rt, author of “Career Shuffle,” believes citing(引用) examples are the best approach.
“My preferred re ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sponse for this question is to tell the truth without damaging the applicant’s image.” Davenport explains.
“A better respons ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e might be, ‘I’ve had some challenges with work-life balance in the past and I realize that a life out of balance isn’t good for me, my family or my employer. I’ve taken the time to learn better time and project management, and I’m also committed to my overall wellness.’”
The answer adds so ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )me dimension to the question, and proves you’ve thought beyond the answer. You’ve actually changed your behavior to address the situation, even if you haven’t completely overcome the weakness.
Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes
However you decid ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e to answer, Debra Yergen, author of “Creating Job Security Resource Guide,” recommends job seekers imagine themselves sitting on the other side of the desk.
“If you were doing ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )the hiring, what would you be looking for What would be your motivation for asking certain questions Who would you be trying to weed out If you can empathize (共鸣) with the interviewer, you can better understand what they want and need, and then frame your qualifications to meet their needs for the position you seek.”
Once you conside ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r what the goal of the question is and figure out what your honest answer is, you’ll be able to give the best possible answer to a tricky question.

For most of human his ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tory, the primary means of communication across long distances was not the computer, telephone or telegraph, but the letter. In the 18th and 19th centuries, although newspapers were common, letters continued to be the primary source of information on politics, social conditions, and even natural disasters. A series of innovations, including the invention of the lead pencil in the 18th century and the steady reduction of postal rates in the 19th century, affected not only the length and content of letters, but the frequency with which they were sent. But few developments changed written communication as much as the introduction of a simple product that created a national fashion at the turn of the 20th century: the postcard.
Postcards we ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )re first developed in the 1870s as promotional advertisements for hotels, resorts (度假胜地),and other businesses. From that point on, the use of postcards rose steadily, from about 770 million that year to almost 1 billion three years later. Manufacturers sprang up to meet the demand. By 1909, the Illustrated Postcard Company alone was producing three million a day.

From the health ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) point of view we are living in a wonderful age. We are immunized from birth against many of the most dangerous diseases. A large number of once fatal illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and surgery. It is almost certain that one day medicines will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased largely. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the unbelievable slaughter (屠杀) of men, women and children on the roads. Man versus the motor-car! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.
It has been rightly ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel(方向盘), his car becomes the additional part of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They swear, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year-olds and completely selfish. All their hidden anger, disappointments and envies seem to be exposed by the act of driving.
The surprising th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ing is that society only smiles so kindly on the motorist when seeing his behaviors talked about above. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost unsuitable to live because of heavy traffic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is damaged by road networks; and the mass annual slaughter becomes nothing more than a statistic, to be conveniently forgotten.
It is high time a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) world code were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. In regard to driving, the laws of some countries are dishonorably loose and even the strictest are not strict enough. A code which was universally accepted could only have a dramatically beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through inflexible annual tests for safety. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can destroy a person’s driving ability, so present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. The highest and lowest speed limits should be put on all roads, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may sound unacceptably harsh. But surely nothing should be considered to be too severe if it results in reducing the annual loss of human life. After all, the world is for human beings, not for motor-cars.

Tomatoes are ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )generally easy to grow. Experts suggest you start seeds indoors if the ground is still cold. For best results with the least risk, they say, plant when the soil is warm, soon after the frost free date for your area.
Small plants may be pl ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )aced a third of a meter apart in rows. If you grow staked plants, set the sticks in the ground about half a meter apart. Some larger varieties of tomatoes may need about a meter between plants and at least a meter and a half between rows. The idea is to leave enough space for harvesting.
Work the soil to re ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )move weeds(杂草). But do not work the soil too deeply or you could damage the tomato plants. Water the plants regularly during long dry periods. Give them plenty of water. Plants in containers may need water daily or even more than once a day. Besides, do give the tomato plants complete organic fertilizers(肥料).
Some gardeners train ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tomato plants to grow on supporting materials. Whatever you choose, make sure the supports are tall enough. Most modern tomato plants grow about a meter tall. Others reach almost two meters.
Tomatoes started from ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )seed take forty five to ninety days till harvest. The average air temperature should be about 24℃. In that case, you can pick the tomatoes when they are firm and fully colored. But if the weather is very hot, pick the tomatoes every day or two. Let them soften and develop their full color indoors.
There was a time wh ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )en people thought tomatoes were poisonous. In fact, they are just the opposite. Tomatoes are good for you. But are they a fruit or a vegetable Technically, a tomato is a fruit—the fruit of the tomato plant. But some fruits, including tomatoes, may be called “vegetables” because they are used in tasty foods instead of sweet cooking.

There are thousan ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ds of coral reefs(珊瑚礁) in the world; Unfortunately, however, they are now in serious danger. More than one-third are in such bad shape that they could die within ten years. 16 Here are the three main causes discovered.
The first cause ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) is pollution on land. The pollutants run with rainwater into rivers and streams, which carry the poisons into the ocean. 17 So they will be easily infected(感染) with diseases.
18 Higher ocean temperatures kill the important food source(来源) for the coral—the algae, the tiny greenish-gold water plants that live on coral. 19 This process has happened more and more frequently in recent years.
The last factor contri ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )buting to the disappearance of coral reefs is people. People sometimes crash into reefs with their boats, breaking off large blocks of coral. 20 Moreover, some people even break coral off to collect for souvenirs since it is so colorful and pretty.
A. Global warming is another reason.
B. Many might not even last that long!
C. Divers who walk on reefs can also do serious damage.
D. Reefs provide a home for 25% of the fish in the ocean.

My name is Clara. I s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )till remember that chilly December day, sitting in science class. I'd finished a worksheet early and picked up a TIME for Kids magazine. A piece of news caught my eye: NASA was holding an essay contest to name its Mars rover(火星探测器).Before I even knew anything else about it,a single word flooded my 11 year old mind: Curiosity.
I couldn't want for t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he bell to ring so I could get started on my essay. That afternoon, I raced home, sat down at the computer, and typed until my fingers ached. “Curiosity is an everlasting flame that burns in everyone's mind...”
Five months late ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r, my mom received a phone call, and immediately, a wide smile spread across her face.
On August 5,2012,at 1 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )0:31 p.m., the rover named Curiosity touched down safely on the surface of Mars, and I was honored to have a front row seat in NASA.
Curiosity is such an ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) important part of who I am. I have always been fascinated by the stars, the planets, the sky and the universe. I remember as a little girl, my grandmother and I would sit together in the backyard for hours. She'd tell me stories and point out the stars. Grandma lived in China, thousands of miles away from my home in Kansas, but the stars kept us together even when we were apart. They were always there, yet there was so much I didn't know about them. That's what I love so much about space.
People often ask me ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) why we go to faraway places like Mars. My answer is simple because we're curious. We human beings do not just hole_up in one place. We are constantly wondering and trying to find out what's over the hill and beyond the horizon.
