Chinese is a difficult language. It has tens of thousands of Chinese characters ( 汉字 ). When you meet a Chinese character that you don't know, you might look it up in a dictionary to find out its“ pinyin” and meaning.“ Pinyin”,a helpful system(系统) that uses the Latin alphabet(拉丁字母), tells us how to pronounce the Chinese characters.
Early in 1958, a Chinese language expert named Zhou Youguang and his team created“ pinyin”. They created the system to help a large number of uneducated Chinese people learn how to read Chinese characters at the time. This idea worked out quite well. The percentage of uneducated people in China dropped from 80% in the 1950s to 52% in 1964. In 2018, it was only 4.08%.
“ Pinyin” has been useful in other ways, too. For example, it helps to popularize“ Putonghua”, so that people from different places of China can understand each other.
It also makes it easier to type Chinese characters on computers and cellphones. Other ways, like the five- stroke input method ( 五笔输入法), are much more difficult to learn and use.
“ Pinyin” is also appearing in other languages. Foreign newspapers and TV stations sometimes use“ pinyin” in their report s about China. The Oxford English Dictionary has now included more than 100“ pinyin” entries(词条 ) in all, such as“ jiaozi” for“ dumplings” and“ zhongguomeng” for
“ Chinese dream”.
As Guangming Daily has noted,“ pinyin” is not only a language tool, but also a cultural bridge that connects China to the world.
