I have known Ting for a long time. She was a friend of mine in high school. Ting used to see me as her best friend in my class because, as she said, it was easy to be friends with me. Therefore, when we had time in school, she often came to me and we would talk about many things. Though I didn't have special feelings about this friend, I was fine with this because I didn't see the reason why I should say “no” to a friend I didn't hate.
But there was a time when she came to me, and usually said nothing meaningful. I started to feel tired and then tried not to meet her. After that she never came to me. Though guilty, I started to feel free about my life and never thought of anything about her feeling.
After a month or two, I learned from other friends that Ting's father had passed away six months ago. I was so shocked! Then I suddenly realized why Ting had often come to me but said nothing special. She needed my company (陪伴). I felt so bad about myself that I went to find her the next day. But I only found that she had moved away to another place.

There are many holidays and festivals. Kids have Children's Day. Dads have Father's Day. Mums have Mother's Day. But do our grandparents have a special festival Yes, they do!
The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for older people in China. It started very long ago. The festival is on lunar (农历的) September 9th. On this day, people show love and respect (尊敬) to their grandparents.
There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.
Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That's because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. Chinese people are proud of being old.
In Western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called “seniors” instead of “old people”. They'd rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement (退休) they take up hobbies, part-time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well.
Westerners respect their older people, too. Usually, seniors don't have to buy tickets for trains or buses. They are given discounts (打折) in stores and restaurants.
But Western seniors don't often live with their children — they live alone. For holidays, the family usually gather at the grandparents' home, and a great smile and a warm hug for their parents are enough for grown children to show their respect.

National Dog Day happens on the 26th of August to care for dogs. On this day you should let your dog know how important he or she is.
Dogs are very important to us. Of course, many of us keep a dog as a pet. However, working dogs help many people every day. Our world would be different without police dogs or guide dogs for blind people. National Dog Day's founder (创立者), Colleen Paige, said we need to show our thanks to dogs for their work and love for us.
A dog is a man's best friend. Humans have been keeping dogs as a pet for over 15,000 years. They are so smart and useful. They can help humans do a lot of things such as looking after the house and protecting people. How did dogs move around the world It's an amazing question. Scientists believe that sled dogs (雪橇犬) moved from Russia to Alaska (阿拉斯加州) across the Bering Strait (白令海峡). Today there are about 400 million dogs in the world. Some people buy and sell dogs. They sell famous dogs for lots of money. It has become a big business. However, many unlucky dogs are still homeless. So we need to love and protect them.

Mother's Day, which is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year, is important to all mothers. I love my mom so much that I did many things for her on that day.
In the morning, I got up early and cleaned the house on my own so that my mother could have a break from everyday chores. Then I made a strawberry cake for my mother, as she has a sweet tooth. After tasting the cake, Mom said it really brought her love and warmth. To express my deep love for Mom, I also made a special card with some sweet words written inside. In the afternoon, I invited Mom to watch the movie Hi, Mom. Watching such a touching movie together made us much closer to each other.
All in all, I tried my best to let my mom know how much she meant to me. It was really a meaningful day!
