“We did a good job,” said Alan Specter, “We've planned to come back here one more time. Of course, we hope that there won't be so much rubbish next time.”
The rubbish came in all shapes, sizes and colors:bottles, bicycles, batteries, furniture, clothing, plastic bags, dolls and even a golf bag with a full set of golf clubs (高尔夫球杆).

That day, it rained a little. All of them wore boots and raincoats. The work took place along a two-mile river with over 500 big yellow rubbish bags everywhere.
No one found anything that cost much. A five-year-old boy found an earring which he thought might be worth a million dollars. He said he would sell it. Then he could donate half of the money to Watch the Whales, and use the other half to buy his favorite ice cream every day.

Cicadas (蝉) are natural part of summer, singing loudly and proudly. They are harmless to humans, but can damage trees. “Cicadas are harmful to cherry trees and sweet osmanthus (桂花) trees,” said Ruan Wangzhou, chief of the Hangzhou Greening Management Station, which is in charge of the gardens and greenery throughout Zhejiang's provincial capital.
Take cherry trees for example, each July and August, the juice in their buds makes them the favorite food and egg-laying places for cicadas. The insects laying eggs in the buds can cause the trees to die. To solve the problem, the station invited people to catch cicadas in a park in Hangzhou. Over 50 people showed up, far exceeding (超过) the expected number 20. The station also invited Jin Sucui, a 62-year-old expert from Lishui, Zhejiang, to teach people how to catch cicadas.
“Catching cicadas is actually quite simple,” Jin said. “All you need is a long stick, a piece of sticky paper and a bag to hold the cicadas. Just keep your hands steady (平稳的) and your eyes on the sticky paper.” Jin caught hundreds of cicadas within two hours. Ruan said he hoped more people could take part in the activity. “Parents can bring their children along to catch cicadas during summer as a way to get in touch with nature and develop their awareness of protecting the environment,” Ruan added.

Squirrels (松鼠) are getting ready for winter. They are looking for nuts and seeds, digging holes in the ground or finding holes in trees. That's where they store the food they will need during the coming months, when the weather is cold and sometimes snowy.
Squirrels spend a lot of time in trees, which are like restaurants for them. Among their favorite things to eat are nuts and other parts of trees, like tender buds (花苞).
Squirrels may also eat corn, insects and other animals. And, as anyone who has a bird knows, squirrels love bird food!
Squirrels stay active all winter, so they need plenty of food to help keep up their energy. Squirrels tend to (趋向于) bury food underground, piece by piece. Some squirrels may gather food into piles that they put at the base of trees or bury underground.
When they need the food, squirrels use their memories and sense of smell to help them find where they buried. Sometimes, you'll even see them digging through the snow.
Squirrels make nests in trees. Some squirrels spend much of the winter in underground tunnels (地道), because they are warmer.
When spring comes, squirrels change their eating habits to new growing plants, like buds and leaves. Sometimes they forget to dig up all their buried nuts.
That's why you'll sometimes find a little tree growing in a place where neither you nor your family planted it. It must have been the squirrels.

We filled our sled (雪橇) high with wood. Then we went to the store and Dad bought some food and a pair of shoes. I tried to think through what Dad was doing. I knew we didn't have much money. Why was Dad buying them so many things
We got to Widow Smith's house and went in. “We brought you a few things, madam,” Dad said, and put down the bag of food on the table. Then Dad handed the pair of shoes to Widow Smith. She bit her lower lip (下唇) to keep it from trembling (发抖) and then tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks.

My name is Ryan and last summer my family and I went to an island for our summer vacation. There were so many fun and interesting things to do on the island, and my favorite was fishing. Every day, my mom, my dad, my younger brother Derek and I went to the beach. We took our little fishing boat with us. Mom didn't like fishing, so she stayed on the beach and read a book.
One morning, while we were fishing, we heard a loud noise. “What was that ” I asked. “Oh, don't worry, Ryan. It might be a turtle (海龟) swimming under the boat, ”said Dad. Derek and I looked around the boat, but we couldn't see anything. Then we heard a different noise, which sounded like an animal. “Look, Dad, there it is!” shouted Derek. It was a sea turtle and it couldn't swim well. “Let's go closer and see what's wrong with it, ” Dad said.
When we got closer, we saw that there was a piece of plastic around the turtle's legs. “Let's help it, ”I said. So Dad jumped into the water, swam to the turtle and brought it back to the boat. “There you go, little turtle. Now you can swim to your family, ” Dad said as he cut the plastic off. Then Derek and I put it back in the water. “I know! We should make a sign about stopping throwing rubbish into the sea, and put it in the sand on the beach, ” I said. “I'll help, too, ” said Derek. “Great idea, boys. One day in March, it was raining after school. They had no umbrellas with them, so they covered their heads with plastic bags and ran to the nearby bus stop.
Fifteen minutes later, a bus came. As soon as the bus stopped and the door opened, people hurried onto the bus. Tom and Linda followed them and tried their best to get on the bus. One Possible Version:
Green Living Starts with Small Things
Everyone can make small changes in lifestyle and make a difference to reduce pollution and waste.
First, you'd better ride a bike or walk to school, because it's a green way which doesn't pollute the air. Second, saving electricity, water and food is necessary. You should turn off the lights when going out. Turning off the tap when you brush your teeth can save a lot of water. What's more, don't use plastic bags when you go shopping, because plastic is harmful to the environment. Last but not least, we need to plant more trees and flowers to make the environment more beautiful.
How important it is for us to protect the environment! If we keep doing these, I believe the environment will be better. Let's take action together from now on.
