My high school life has been filled with ups and downs. And the school, Southside High School, was not even my first choice. My parents always said to me, “Since you have chosen the school, then it is the best for you.”
I did not realize my ability as a student until the third year in high school. I was told that my third year would be the hardest time in all my years of high school. With a sense of anxiety (焦虑), I started my third year, worrying about my grades. As the weeks went by, I began to believe that the third year was not as hard as others had said. But I was wrong. My grades were quickly falling, and by the end of the first term, I had got five Cs in seven of my classes! I couldn't believe it. I tried my best to get my grades up without asking anybody for help, but my pride just made my grades even worse. And I failed some important speech competitions. I was sad. I realized that I couldn't go through my third year on my own, so I began to ask others for help.
After I got a tutor (家庭教师), my grades went from Cs to As and Bs. I slowly started to get my confidence (自信) back. I also received awards in speech competitions.
Southside High School has taught me to keep my head up and never give up, no matter what life throws at me. I am proud of being a student of it.

My daughter Becky graduated from Washington High School in June. During the graduation ceremony, one of her classmates gave a simple speech that I will always remember. She talked about the “givers” of this world. She said, “You will be a success if you make another person smile. If you give a hand to someone who needs a little help, you will get an ‘A’!”
After the ceremony, when all of the students were outside the hall trying to find their parents and friends, a man and his wife came to me and asked if I was Becky's mom. I said yes and the man handed me a gift and began to tell me how much they appreciated Becky's kindness to their daughter, Jessica, during the school sports meeting the week before.
Jessica's left leg was hurt and she was unable to finish the up-hill race. Becky was worried about her and kept going back to check on her leg. Jessica's dad told me that Becky had shown more concern (关怀) for her daughter than the coach, and that he and his wife would never forget her kindness. Of course, by that time I had tears in my eyes. Every year in Australia, the strongest long-distance runners race more than 500 miles from Sydney to Melbourne. The race takes more than five days to complete. It attracts world-class athletes who become spokespeople for sneakers and sports drinks.
In 1983, however, as the competitors lined up to race, they were attracted by a 61-year-old farmer wearing overalls and work boots. His name was Cliff Young. The other runners mistook him for a spectator (观众).He explained that on his family's sheep farm, he often had to round up 2,000 animals by himself.“Sometimes I have to run after those sheep for two or three days.I believe I can run this race,” he said.
When the race began, the younger runners flew past Cliff.Instead of running after them, Cliff shuffled (拖着脚走) along in an unusual way.The other runners and the spectators thought he would never finish the race. But something unexpected happened. When all the other runners took a break to sleep, Cliff kept running. The other runners caught up to him each morning, but finally Cliff was too far ahead to be passed. On the fifth day, he left all of the young, world-class athletes behind. He was the first competitor to cross the finish line and he set a new course record.
Cliff received $10,000 for winning the race.He said he did not realize there would be prize money, and he gave the money to his fellow runners.Doing this made him a hero in Australia.Since then, many runners have used his shuffling stride. No one sleeps during the race anymore, either. The farmer changed long-distance racing and proved that age and clothes aren't everything.

At first I thought it was because I'd been going to bed late during summer vacation. I was sure I could get used to my school timetable after a couple of weeks. But as the school year has gone by, I've found myself lying awake in bed until 2 or 3 in the morning, even though I have to get up at 6:30 a.m. every day. Now I often fall asleep in class and my grades are getting worse and worse. The teacher is really angry with me. I am very worried about that. I really need your help. Would you please give me some advice Please send me an email at Gary000@, or call me at 638-4935.

Dear Li Lei,
How time flies! We are going to graduate from junior high school. I really want to express my thanks to you.
I still remember that when I first arrived at this new school, I was shy and nervous. I didn't know anyone in our class and you were the first to say hello to me. I felt warm and happy. During the three years of study, you always helped me when I had difficulty learning. You helped me with my English and gave me a lot of useful suggestions. My English has improved a lot.
Wish you all the best!
Yours,
Li Hua
