Three years ago, Mark moved out of his mother’s house after landing a well -paying job in
another city. He thought living 1500 miles away from his elderly mother, Cassandra, would work
out because he planned to visit her monthly.
Mark stuck to his visiting plan during the first year. However, with the amount of work
increasing, he couldn’t find time to visit his mother monthly. He started to only speak to her on the
phone, telling her about his life. Soon, Mark became busy and made a few phone calls to
Cassandra. He didn’t even remember the last time they spoke on the phone.
One day, while working in his office, Mark heard his phone ring.
“Mom’s 70th birthday!” the reminder on his phone read.
“Oh, dear. How can I forget my mom’s birthday again ” Mark shook his head as he turned
the reminder alarm off. “I can’t keep disappointing her like this. Let me see how fast I can get to
her place.”
After checking his work schedule (日程计划), Mark realized that he could make it to his
mother’s house by the evening if he left the office in an hour. He quickly finished the work and
left the office without wasting another minute.
On his way, he stopped at a store and bought his mother’s favorite cake. He also bought her
flowers and a few gifts. Although he wanted to call her, Mark thought it would be better to
surprise her because he was sure that she wasn’t expecting him to visit her. After all, this was the
first time that he had done something like this in a long time.
Mark finally arrived at the mother’s house. However, when he knocked at the door, no one
answered. Puzzled, he opened the door with his key and entered. Nobody was there. He searched
the house worriedly, only to find an envelope covered with dust on the table. Recognizing his
mother’s handwriting (笔迹), Mark opened the envelope at once. It turned out that Cassandra had
left her house and joined a local retirement community because she felt lonely.

【答案】
In the letter, she also expressed her love for Mark and the hope of seeing him. But since
Mark never gave her enough time, she didn’t want to trouble him anymore. Mark felt sorry for not
giving enough care and attention to his mother. Tears welled up in his eyes. He immediately
rushed out of the house and headed towards the retirement community mentioned in the letter.
Upon arrival, he got out of his car, holding the flowers in one hand and the birthday cake in the
other.
After asking about his mother at the front desk, he was glad to know she was still there.
Seeing his mother, Mark ran to hand her the flowers and hug her tightly, saying how regretful he
was for not visiting her earlier. Cassandra was both surprised and happy to see her son suddenly.
She patted her son’s back and said she always understood him. Mark celebrated his mother’s
birthday with her friends at the retirement community. That day, he realized the importance of
having family around and promised to visit his mother regularly, no matter how busy he was.

Honesty Won’t Let You Down
Asad was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and hardworking. Recently, he had
entered a new school so he had no friends yet. On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school.
The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why
he couldn’t get up on time as usual.
At school, Asad could not pay attention to anything and wanted the bell to ring so that he
could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Asad quickly opened his
schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in
the morning and forgotten to take the money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some
money but there was nothing.
Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the
dining room. He saw a few of his classmates there, among whom was Fahad. He was one of the
richest kids in his class but he was very arrogant. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much
about anyone.
Asad thought he might borrow some money from Fahad and return it to him the next day.
So he got up and slowly went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money.
Fahad smirked (讥笑) and said, “I knew you were a loser, but I didn’t know you were also a
beggar ” Fahad laughed out so loud that the other kids heard and also made fun of Asad.
It was too humiliating (丢脸的) for Asad. He could not answer Fahad and slowly walked
back towards an empty bench. He could still hear them laughing at him in the distance. When he
reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and
recognized it was Fahad’s, as he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and saying that his
uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

【答案】At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punished Fahad. At least he could afford the
lunch now. However, another voice popped up, urging him to give it back to Fahad, which made
him feel torn. “I should never keep the wallet at the cost of my honesty, and Fahad would be
extremely embarrassed without any money in the presence of so many classmates!” Asad
convinced himself. Once he made up his mind, he accelerated his pace and caught him up. “Fahad,
it’s your wallet and I found it on the bench.” Taking over the wallet, Fahad stared into Asad’s eyes
with a puzzled look written on his face.
Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving it back ” He even looked into his wallet, obviously
doubtful about Asad’s act. Calmly and patiently, Asad explained, “I had originally wanted to keep
it secret as a punishment for your arrogance, but being honest matters more to me.” Hearing what
Asad had said, Fahad felt his face burning with shame. He bent, thanking Asad for saving him
from the embarrassing situation and apologizing to the classmates around for calling them losers.
“And the lunch is on me. You all are my friends!” Fahad announced.

English was always easy for me, but that changed the first day I walked into Mrs. Johnson’s
class. I’d heard rumors from former students that she was strict and demanding that her class was
impossible to pass, and that I was crazy for even wanting to take it. Consequently, I was extremely
nervous.
On the first day of school, Mrs. Johnson stood in the front of her classroom, smiling, while
she waited for the class to settle down. Her long, curly, red hair and clear blue eyes made her seem
full of life. You could tell she had so much knowledge that it just wanted to overflow and spill (溅
出) all over the floor.
“This course is Advanced Writing Course,” she said. “I’m not exaggerating when I say this
class will be difficult, but if you trust me, I’ll guide you.”
She explained her grading system was different from what we were used to and that we’d
better forget about the so-called good grades we had got before. She guaranteed that our writing
would improve once we understood the new writing skills which she would teach us.
“Writing is an art,” she said. “You can’t just put words on a piece of paper and sign your
name on top of it. Instead, what you put your name on is out there to be judged.”
I’d never thought about it that way. Every time I rushed to finish an essay and wrote my
name on top, it was still my writing, my words, out there for everyone to read.
She hoped that if we wanted to be good writers, we had to remember writing really was an
art, and that it might take a long time to perfect.
Even though I thought I was doing fine in her class, my writing grade was terrible. I began
to doubt myself and even thought about quitting the writing class. That was when I realized I
needed to find out what I could do to improve my grade.

【答案】Version 1:
So I went to Mrs. Johnson’s office after class. “Mrs. Johnson, I, uh, I’d like to talk with you
about my writing.” I stammered, my voice barely rising above a whisper. Smiling, she got up from
her chair, patted me on the shoulder and said gently, “OK, what’s your problem ” Her warm smile
melted my nervousness. I poured out all my puzzles about writing, which she explained one by
one patiently. She also told me writing, like any other skill, was something I could get better at
with time and practice. She even promised to tutor me after class on a regular basis.
The after-class instructions continued for months until the Year Writing Contest came. Mrs.
Johnson encouraged me to enter for it, but I hesitated—I wasn’t ready for a contest. Seeing my
lack of motivation, she said only those who dared to fail greatly could achieve greatly. Waking up
to her encouragement, I decided to give it a try. Although I didn’t win any prize, the experience
helped me understand Mrs. John’s remark “writing was an art”. After that, I was really into
writing and never stopped it, which I owed to the guidance of my dear teacher Mrs. Johnson.

When Mrs. Johnson entered me for it, I joyfully took the opportunity as those months of

Mrs. Johnson said, when you had a dream, you just grabbed it and never let go. To my greatest
joy, I won the first prize. After that, I was really into writing and understood that writing was an
art, which I owed to the guidance of my dear teacher Mrs. Johnson.

Oh, Brother!
A few months ago, my mom got remarried, making Drew my stepbrother. She hoped we’d
get along. But he was like a headache I couldn’t get rid of. Mom thought inviting Kendall, my best
friend, for a sleepover would take my mind off Drew. So far, that wasn’t working.
Later in my room, Kendall and I were doing our nails when Drew came in, with a bowl of
popcorn in his hands. “Does anyone want popcorn ” asked Drew.
“Mom doesn’t like food in here, and you got into my room without asking!” I said angrily.
“Time to leave, Drew,” I pointed to the door.
I decided an ice cream would cool me down. In the kitchen, Kendall and I had hardly started
eating when I heard Drew hurrying down the stairs. “Hey, who wants to have a pillow fight ” he
asked.
“I do!“ cried Kendall, sticking her ice cream in the freezer. She and Drew ran upstairs,
leaving me alone with my bad attitude.
I wasn’t about to follow them like a puppy. There was something I had to do. I took the
cream and slipped into Drew’s room. I found his slippers, and stuck the cream inside them.
Satisfied, I grabbed a pillow, ready to fight him.
I ran into my room and hit Drew with the pillow. He countered with a blow to my legs.
Kendall threw her pillow into his side. Before long, we were all laughing. I lifted my pillow over
my head to give Drew a final blow. But I missed. It crashed into the popcorn bowl left on the
dresser. The corns rained everywhere just as mom walked into the room.“Stop! You kids are being
too wild,” she cried. “And, Sarah, you know I don’t like food in here.”

No one is born a winner. People make themselves into winners by their own efforts. I
learned this lesson from an experience many years ago. I took the head coaching job at a school in
Baxley, Georgia. It was a small school with a weak football program. The school took part in the
league matches every year. However, it never ended well. We were more of the audience,
watching and cheering instead of sweating out in the fields.
Fortunately, the school held the tradition that the school’s old team was to play against the
new team at the end of spring practice. For lack of resources, the old team bad no coach, and they
didn’t even practice to prepare for the game.
I was assigned (指派 ) as the coach of the new team, which was why I was excited. I
believed that we were going to win, but to my disappointment, we were defeated. I couldn’t
believe I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I tried to figure out the reason and
what I should do next.
It didn’t take long before I came to realize that my team was depending on me. Without
proper guidance or previous experience, my team was at a loss what to do. I had to change my
attitude so that I could bring out the best in them about their ability and potential.
I would let my action do the talking. First, I started doing anything I could to help them
build a little pride. I could see their spirits lifted, with their head held high in great confidence.
Most importantly, I began to treat them like winners. Only when they regarded themselves as
winners could they willingly invest time and energy.
This summer, the other teams enjoyed their vacations.

This summer, the other teams enjoyed their vacations. We met every day and practiced passing
and kicking the football. At first, some complained that even the hardest practice couldn't change
the fact that they were the last. The whole team was covered by the sense of depression and
failure. What I could do at that time was to company them and try to cheer them up. Encouraged
by my persistence, the team gathered the spirit of trying again and practiced even harder. This
time, we sweated out in the fields instead of being the audience, watching and cheering. Every
inch of the field has seen the effort of my team.
Six months later, football season started. After suffering our failure on the spring practice field,
we won our first game and our second, and continued to improve. Finally, we faced the number
one team in the state. I felt that it would be a victory for us even if we lost the game. But that
wasn't what happened. My boys beat the best team in Georgia, giving me one of the greatest thrills
of my life! From the game I learned a lot about how the attitude of the leader can influence the
members of a team. Instead of seeing my boys as losers, I pushed and encouraged them. I helped
them to see themselves differently, and they built themselves into winners. Winners are made, not
born.

A couple worked hard to provide for their family well, but their wealth came at the expense
of their time. They hired a woman called May to help raise their three children. Their first son,
Matt, was now 18, and they had two other children who were 8 and 5 years old. When they had
Matt, they weren’t financially wealthy. However, by the time Matt turned 9, it slowly improved.
When Matt was 11, they decided to send him to a private school since they could afford it.
Changing the school environment brought about a sudden personality change for Matt, and his
parents believed it was because putting him in a class of wealthy teenagers made him feel superior
(有优越感的).
Through the years, the concerned parents tried to change this side of Matt. When he was16,
the parents made him take a part-time job to start taking financial responsibility seriously. At first,
the parents thought it worked. However, after some time, the boy’s parents realized he hadn’t
changed.
One day, the couple planned to go on vacation. Instead of leaving May at home, they
decided to take her with them and bought her a first-class ticket. While they were planning the
vacation, Matt overheard them talking. He felt his parents’ paying for May’s first-class seat was
unnecessary because their family had already paid for her.
The mom was shocked. She said it was mean for him to say that, especially after everything
May did for them. She added how grateful she was for May’s help, as she gave up time for her
own child to raise hers—Matt included. Still, Matt continued to argue his point. The mom grew
tired of his selfishness and said he’d be the one in an economy seat and had to pay for an upgrade
to first class if he wanted one. The boy nodded, thinking it was a joke.

On the day of the trip, Matt realized his mum was telling the truth. He started losing his
temper in the middle of the airport. He complained ten hours of flying in a small economy seat
would be very uncomfortable. His mother replied that he could have used the money he earned
from his part time job to upgrade. Matt was speechless and had to accept the decision. But to
Matt’s surprise, May asked the flight attendant to switch her and Matt’s seats before the plane
took off. Matt got to sit in first class as he wished, but he was ashamed.
Still feeling ashamed after the trip, the young man knew he had to change. He realized all
his former comfortable life had been due to his parents and hard-working May. He should no
longer take what others did for granted. From then on, he cut down his own daily expenses and
focused on his school assignments. He even donated some of his expensive clothes and shoes to
students in poor areas. Seeing Matt’s changes after that trip. his parents felt happy and relieved.

With new faces everywhere, the time in Grade 1 was really tough for me. Since I was an
Indian girl, nobody wanted to talk to me. Every spare minute was spent alone, and no classmates
would group with me for projects.
Feeling lonely and sad, I was in desperate need of close friends. A girl named Fatin, who
was cute, clever and talented, appealed to me deeply. However, she seemed to be avoiding me as
well. Being only six years old, I didn’t understand why people treated me like that, I opened up to
my mother about all this, almost crying my eyes out.
Mom smiled, comforting me until I calmed down. She looked into my eyes and encouraged
me, “Honey, don’t worry. They’re just not familiar with you. Try to bring out the best in you.
They’ll befriend (做朋友) you as long as they see your advantages.” At that time, I didn’t believe
her, but Mom was right.
One day, my teacher, Miss Barbara, announced that there was to be a speech competition. I
really enjoyed joining in speech competitions. Actually, I was quite good at them. The only
problem was that the whole school would be watching me and I knew none of my audience.
However, I was determined to do it. I gathered all my courage, went up to the teacher and
said, “Miss Barbara, I want to join in the speech competition.” She stared at me, but then I saw a
gentle smile on her face. She handed me an application form.
The next day, I arrived at school early to submit (提交 )my form to the teacher. Miss
Barbara said encouragingly to me, “For a new student, you have lots of courage. Do your best,

My friend invited me to a trapeze (高空秋千) class. I was doubtful because of a lack of
courage and a short of self-confidence, but her enthusiasm and assurances of strict safety rules
won me over.
I had been fearful of heights since elementary school and avoiding my fear of heights
became second nature. But here I was, at age twenty-six, facing my fear of heights in a rather
extreme way. I had come around to the idea of trying trapeze. I figured it wasn’t much different
from swinging (舞动) on the monkey bars as a kid. One difficulty I didn’t expect was the ladder
(梯子). In order to reach the trapeze, I had to climb up a twenty-two-foot ladder.
I could hear one of my classmates expressing her impatience with my slow climb up the
ladder. “If she’s afraid of heights, why did she sign up for a trapeze class ” However, my friend
was at the top of the ladder, trying to encourage me. Besides, his distraction techniques helped to
take my mind off my dangerous task. I found a rhythm(节奏) and kept going. With a slow and
steady pace, I made it to the top. The cheers from my classmates rang out below.
An instructor told me to step to the edge of the platform. He reminded me of the safety
rules, including the net below that would catch me at the bottom. He also asked me to listen to the
directions while in the air, so I could perform a trick.
As the instructor counted down, I took a deep breath and pushed off the platform, swinging
back and forth. At that moment, I lost awareness of time and space. Fortunately, the instructor’s
voice came over the loudspeaker, giving me step-by-step instructions for performing a trick.
Instead of doubting my inability to perform the trick, I took his directions one step at a time.

【答案】One possible version:
During my flight on the trapeze. my fear didn’t completely leave me. My palms were clammy,
my heart was racing, and my mouth was dry. But I turned down the dial of my fear so I could be
present in the experience. I focused my thoughts on the instructor’s voice instead of my internal
dialogue about what could go wrong. In the end, I successfully completed the task. I couldn’t
believe I had actually done it!
This experience opened up a new way of seeing myself and approaching other challenges. I
became more capable of overcoming my fear and learned to believe in myself. I became more
open to try new things. After my trapeze flight, I took an archery class, went on my first kayaking
trip, and hiked along a 200-foot cliff in Nova Scotia. While these experiences made my heart
pound, I completed them, one step at a time. Whether my steps were small or big on the ground or
in midair, I wanted to keep stepping out of my comfort zone.

Kevin was a member of a well-known family—well respected and industrious. However, a
crisis left their family penniless.
Kevin decided to leave home city and make a living by himself because his family was too
poor. Before leaving, he told his father, “I want to learn the circus (马戏) performance.”
His father was confused and wondered why he had such a strange idea.
What his father didn’t know was that Kevin loved the circus since childhood. Every time
there was news of a circus performance, he hurried home on his bicycle. He ran through the front
door. “Mum, Dad,” he shouted. “The circus has come to town.
He was very excited when his father took him and his sister to the circus the next day. At
the circus, the audience always burst out laughing when the clowns ( 小丑 ) appeared. The
attraction of the circus was endless.
He clearly remembered once they went and sat down, a lady in a shiny costume walked a
tightrope. When a boy of Kevin’s age rode a unicycle (独轮脚踏车), he asked for a volunteer.
Kevin raised his hand and he was picked. The boy taught Kevin to ride a unicycle. The audience
clapped. He had a great time at the circus!
His father was unhappy with his answer, “What No, you can’t do that. A circus is the place
for clowns. Our family will be ashamed of you.”
But Kevin insisted (坚持). “Our family is so poor now. Which is more important to you,
dignity (尊严) or food I will give you some money every month from the circus. It probably will
be a huge fortune. ” His father was very stubborn (固执的). “If you go there, somebody will know
about it very soon and I’ll be very embarrassed, and it must be really tough to be skilled at
performing such tricks.”

Many people were fascinated by his performance and thought he was a legend of the field. One
day, Kevin’s father went to visit a relative in another city. The relative paid a lot for tickets of the
magician’s show and invited him to watch.
Kevin’s father went to the show. During the show, he was totally impressed by the
magician’s tricks. When the magician took off his mask, the father found Albert was his son
Kevin. Everything clicked. Kevin changed his name for fear that his career might bring shame on
his family. Staring at the young adult on the stage and picturing how hard a life he must have

One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the

parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it a secret. Zahra agreed
and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she
would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run
to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived
late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned
that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and
promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get
tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and
his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and
he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish

About six months ago, I joined a gym. Every morning, there was one personal trainer who
worked out. He did his routine with such a quiet determination that he made it all look very easy.
When I wanted to quit, I watched him push himself to his own limits, and I found myself
motivated to work hard.
Several weeks ago, I was watching him do chin-ups (引体向上) effortlessly. I asked him if
I could try a chin-up. I had never tried before. He eagerly stepped aside and encouraged me to step
up to the bar. I pulled myself up without thinking... Once...then twice. I had no strength left. I told
him that was all I had, so he stepped up behind me and pushed me up for a third and a fourth pull.
It felt so good and I smiled from ear to ear.
The next day when I was done with my workout, I asked him to spot me again. Again, I did
two. Again on day three and so on. I thought it was pitiful that I could only do two, but he said he
was impressed with my chin-ups, explaining that most people couldn’t do them at all. He further
told me that if I practiced every day, I would be doing five or six in no time.
I just jumped in and gave it a try. A few months had passed since that memorable day at the
gym. I continued to work on my chin-ups, slowly but steadily. With each passing week, I could
feel my strength increasing and my determination growing.
One day, as I approached the chin-up bar, my trainer noticed the determination in my eyes.
He smiled and said, “You know, you’ve come a long way in such a short time. I believe it’s time
to set a new goal for yourself.” I asked, “What do you have in mind ” He replied, “How about
aiming for ten consecutive (连续不断的) chin-ups I have no doubt that you can achieve it with
your insistence.”

【答案】I was both excited and nervous about this new challenge. Ten chin-ups seemed like a
significant leap from where I had started, but the belief my trainer had in me fueled my
determination, I accepted the challenge and got to work. Every morning, I pushed myself harder
than before. The numbers slowly climbed: three, four, five and then seven chin-ups, It was
challenging, but I remembered the lesson that I had learned. The most difficult tasks can be
achieved through consistent effort and belief in oneself.
Finally, one morning, it happened. I pulled myself up to the bar and completed ten
consecutive chin-ups. I couldn’t contain my excitement and joy. I felt a profound sense of
accomplishment. I achieved my goal through persistence. I had made it a reality. As I continue my
fitness journey, I carry this lesson with me: No matter how daunting the obstacle may seem, the
belief and persistence can help me overcome it. It’s not just about physical strength but also about
mental fortitude and the power of setting and achieving goals.

I knew I would have a beyond-busy summer, I would be a junior teacher for the Little
Dragons Karate(空手道) Camp. And I had to do summer swim team. And Ollie and I already had
two customers for our dog-walking business,
“You might be biting off more than you can chew,” my mom said with a warning glimpse
when I talked to her about it and announced, “I want to do everything!”
“Don't worry.” I grinned, “I have strong teeth!”
My mom smiled back. “In this case, it's your organizational skills, not your teeth, that need
to be strong.” I didn't take it to my heart.
And the first week really was no problem. My friend Ollie was out of town and karate camp
hadn't started, so my swim stuff was all I needed to worry about. The next week was great too. I
swam, and a Little Dragon at karate camp told me I was his favorite teacher ever!
I did learn, though, that staying organized with two activities was harder. My backpack was
already stuffed with a towel and swim things, so I needed another for my karate clothing. Riding
my bike from karate camp to the pool with two backpacks was a challenge. But I still had it under
control until Ollie got back.
“We’re late getting our business together!” he said. “We’ll have to spend every spare
minute preparing.”
“But I don't have any spare minutes!” I said.
“Did you forget we agreed to walk Alfie every Saturday And Muffin on Tuesdays at
4:00 ”Ollie asked. I couldn't let Ollie down, so I took out a third backpack and filled it with dog
toys, treats, and plastic bags. I thought I was all set.
But I was wrong! It didn't take long for my dog-walking stuff and karate stuff and swim
stuff to get all mixed up, forgotten, or lost. One day, I forgot my karate backpack and had to
borrow Emma's extra outfit, which was too tight. The next day, I remembered my karate stuff but
forgot my swimsuit, so I had to help out in the snack shop and stay out of the pool all afternoon.
And another time, when I reached into my dog-walking pack for plastic bags, all I could find were
swim goggles(护目镜) and sunscreen.

The year 2013 marked a turning point in my life. In June, my husband was offered a new
Job in Ghana. Feeling that I had hit a career bottleneck as a photographer and copywriter (广告文
字撰写人), I, without any hesitation, made the decision to relocate with him.
While my husband engaged in work, my visa didn’t grant me the same privilege. But that’s
okay. I didn’t know what to do anyway. I was left isolated, homesick and lacking purpose. Our
new home was a bungalow near a river that cut across expansive grasslands. With few people
around our home, I turned to nature, which had been a fondness of mine since childhood. Every
day, I would take my camera and wander around, photographing aimlessly.
It wasn’t long before September arrived, bringing the full flow of the rainy season. After
one particularly bad thunderstorm, I found a finch (雀) — a poor little thing barely a month old
with one wing broken — on the ground. Evidently, he had been abandoned by his flock, his nest
blown from a tree. The sight was heartbreaking. He was the size of my lite finger. His eyes were
tightly shut and he was shuddering, too young to survive alone. I somehow felt a connection with
it. Immediately I scooped him up and cautiously placed him in a cardboard box with towels,
mimicking a nest, and stayed up all night researching how to care for him.
The next day, he seemed to regain some energy. He woke with his mouth open, though still
too weak to let out a call. I fed him some food and chirped (叽喳) at him. To my amusement, he
chirped back and even climbed into my hand. I affectionately gazed at this adorable creature, who
was now boldly pecking (啄 ) my fingers now and then. A surge of warmth ran through me.
Tenderly stroking his feathers, I chirped a lullaby, singing him to sleep. Gradually, his eyes
drooped and he drifted off. I couldn’t help but chuckle at the scene — as far as he was concerned,
I was his mother.

Last September was my first month of middle school, which was completely overwhelming
(不知所措的 ). Every day in the passages, I felt lost and not very smart. Everyone at school
seemed to know who they were and what they were doing, but not me. I was desperate to find my
place at school.
And then there was the school play. Hmm, costumes might be kind of fun. I added my
name to the sign-up sheet for props and costumes. That’s the real beginning of this story, I guess.
I’d had an enjoyable backstage making sure all the actors had their shoes and figuring out
how to make a fake pocket watch out of a bicycle chain for the Train Conductor. But then, on
opening night, Mr. Bash, the director, rushed up to me.
“There you are, Maisy,” he panted (气喘吁吁). “I need you to step in for Bailey tonight. He
broke his leg during lunch.”
I started sweating. “I…” I stammered (结结巴巴地说), shaking my head.
“Listen, I know this is short notice,” Mr. Bash said. “But we can’t do the show without Lost
Cow. You know the cues because you’re always waiting to take the halter rope (缰绳 ) from
Bailey and give him the straw hat.”
“But…”
“Just go onstage, get the rope from Train Conductor, do the shrug (耸肩 ), and walk off.
After all, no one will even know that it’s you.”
That stopped me short. If I had to go out there and recite a bunch of lines, I might faint. Or
else throw up. But what if I were wearing the cow head, and my name wasn’t in the program, and
no one could really even see me
Right then, I decided I’d try. Maybe it would be fun
So fifteen minutes later, I was waiting behind the curtain. “Ready, Lost Cow ” said a voice
beside me. It was Mr. Bash.
“No one knows it’s me, right ” I asked.
“No one,” Mr. Bash said.

Priscilla and I had been classmates for several years but we never really liked each other.
We had different groups of friends. Priscilla’s friends were very good at sports while my friends
and I performed well in our studies. Priscilla was our school’s top athlete and was constantly
praised by our teachers. I was jealous of her athletic abilities and her popularity at school.
Maliciously (怀有恶意地), I thought she was just manipulating the teachers and her friends with
her charm. I felt she was an insincere and shallow person. Therefore, I wanted to have nothing to
do with her.
One afternoon, our class attended an adventure camp. One of the activities we participated
in was rock climbing. I was very keen to learn rock climbing. We practiced first on a rock
climbing wall, and once we had mastered the skills, we could go on to climb the cliff in the forest
reserve. Rock climbers must work with a partner. While one person climbs, the partner must hold
on tightly to the other end of the rope for safety. If the climber falls, the partner is responsible for
stopping the fall.
The trainer assigned Priscilla to be my partner! I was very upset. How could I trust
Priscilla She would not stop me from falling. She would probably wish that I would fall.
However, there was nothing I could do because the trainer wouldn’t allow us to change partners.
So I climbed and Priscilla held on to the safety rope.
While climbing, a wave of joy and confidence came over me. I cautiously made my way up
the wall, caught each notch (凹槽) above tightly, and pulled myself up. Every muscle in my body
was shaking from the strain of climbing but I wanted to prove to everyone that I was a better rock
climber than Priscilla. Thinking about outperforming Priscilla, my focus on climbing left me as I
reached for a notch that was too far from my reach. I took a risk and jumped up to grab it.

One Friday afternoon, some of my classmates planned to take a hike in a jungle(丛林 ),
including my friends Jake and Liam. They asked me if I would like to go with them. I love
outdoor activities, so I immediately said yes.
It was sunny the following morning. I was in a very good mood. I was so excited about
hiking since it was the first time that I had hiked with them. I ate a light breakfast. After that, I
hurriedly ran out of my house to meet them in the school playground.
The jungle where we were going was far from our school. It took about three hours to go
there by bus, but it wasn’t a boring journey as we were all eager to hike. After we got off the bus,
we found a local guide to ensure our safety. The guide, whose name is Thomas, said that he had
hiked there lots of times and that he was familiar with the route. When we arrived, Thomas told us
never to leave the group. He warned us that we would easily get lost in the jungle if we walked
alone. Then we began to hike.
There were various plants which we had never seen before. All of us were amazed at the
beauty of the scenery and the sounds of the creatures. Sadly, after hiking for about an hour, I
found that my watch on my wrist was gone. I realized that my watch had fallen off. It was a gift
from my grandma, and I loved it very much. Without thinking, I turned back and tried to find my
watch. Since I was the last one walking in the group, nobody noticed it when I walked away.
I wasn’t worried about getting lost because I thought I could find my watch easily.
However, when I finally found my watch and tried to catch up with my friends, they had gone far.
I immediately realized that I was alone and lost.

A 92-year-old hunter getting lost in the woods
Bill McDonnell was going hunting. Deer season had begun, but it was colder than usual. Up
until his late 80s, Bill hadn’t minded hunting in sub-zero temperatures, but he had slowed in the
past few years. The snow-dusted mountains of the Shenandoah Valley were no place for a
92-year-old. He knew it. But he had made up his mind to get outside. His wife, Joanna
McDonnell, knew what he was up to. But this particular day, Joanna didn’t even try to talk sense
into her husband.
The next morning, Bill woke up at four, grabbed his gun, and drove his Jeep toward
Shenandoah Mountain, a place where he hadn’t hunted for a long time. At the end of the old
Laurel Run logging road, he hit the trail on foot.
It was about 7:30 a.m. when the sun peeked (微微露出 ) through the trees. Bill had strict
instructions from Joanna to be out of the woods by 2 p.m. and home by 3 p.m. — plenty of time
before sunset, in case he missed the deadline, which he often did. Not long into the hike, he came
upon a path he didn’t remember. Maybe this was a secret route. He took it.
Then, around 11 a.m., he emerged (出现) into a clearing along a valley. It seemed that his
path up the mountain had meandered( 蜿蜒 ) quite a bit. When thoughts of short-cuts came to
mind, Bill couldn’t help himself. “I’ll just be extra careful,” he reasoned, and began cutting his
own path. Before long, the canyon (峡谷) narrowed to a dead end. The next thing he knew was
that he was lost.
He pulled out his phone, only to find it had died. He dug into his pants for the GPS device he
always brought in case of emergency and pushed the “on” button. Nothing. He had forgotten to
charge it. He hadn’t brought a flashlight either. During this period, he could hear the sound of a
helicopter flying over his head. He yelled and waved, but in vain. He couldn’t make himself heard.

I was a shy 13-year-old boy that year, afraid to speak before people and poor at
communicating with others. My parents were worried so they introduced a part-time job in a
restaurant tome during the summer vacation, hoping it would make a difference to me. Although I
hated it and didn’t believe it would bring any change to me, I had to accept it. The part-time job
fell on Monday of each week.
On the first Monday, I simply dared not look at people in the restaurant. And when I was
speaking with them, my face turned red and my voice was low. On my way back home, I felt so
bad. But when I reached home, my bad feelings disappeared. I found my parents had brought
home a pet cat, which I had expected to get for a long period of time. The cat was so lovely.
However, one Thursday, he secretly ran out and disappeared. We looked for him
everywhere the whole day but found nothing. We lived in the city, close to a high-traffic road, and
this cat didn’t have “street smarts”. I guessed he would probably die and wouldn’t be home again.
And after three days of looking for the cat with no sign of him, I quite believed he wouldn’t be
home again. My parents told me “A miracle ( 奇迹 ) may happen as long as you don’t give
up.” However, I quite doubted it.
On the morning of the following Monday, I left for work 45 minutes earlier and started
walking to the bus stop a block away. While waiting for the bus there, I thought about the work
and felt upset. It wouldn’t be helpful to me and it was tiring! How much I wanted to quit the job!
And thinking of the cat, I felt even worse.
Since it was still early, I suddenly wanted to spare some time to look for the cat again
though I had little hope. I told myself, “If I still fail to find him this time, I won’t look for him
again.” Then, I decided to walk to the next bus stop to look for him around. Minutes later,
suddenly, a dirty and weak cat sitting by a tree caught my eye.

Rafael is my parents’ friend who owns a bakery with the yummiest (最美味的 ) treats
imaginable. He happened to stop by when my friends Mareya and Daniel, my little sister Indi and
I were drawing with chalk in front of my house. He said our drawings were cool, while trying not
to step on them as he walked toward the door to find my dad. We expressed our thanks and
continued to draw.
A little while later, when he came back out with my dad, Rafael said he had been thinking
about our wonderful drawings, and that he’d really love our help. He was going to sell cookies,
and the profits would go to an organization that worked to save the rainforests. When asked if he
wanted us to help taste the cookies, Rafael laughed and said “Of course”. But he said he also
needed some artwork for the bags. He wondered if we would be up for making some sketches (草
图) on paper that he could consider for the label.
We said yes right away. I mean, who wouldn’t want to help the rainforests — and sample
some of Rafael’s delicious cookies Rafael had to leave for a meeting but promised to be back by
four o’clock. “Don’t worry about making the pictures perfect,” he said as he left. “Just have fun
drawing.”
After we read a little bit about the rainforests, my mom helped get us set up with art
supplies and background music. And away we drew! Finally, about five minutes before four
o’clock, we decided to stop and look at one another’s work. To our great surprise, Daniel made an
incredible drawing. When asked why he never told us he could draw like that, Daniel just smiled.
