People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert (沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber. He has climbed many high mountains in the world. Starting in 2015, he and his friends spent two years on an adventure(探险)in South America, covering 7,800 miles. He was even named Adventure of the Year by a famous geography magazine in 2018.
Although Jerry had achieved great success, he didn’t feel fulfilled. He asked himself, “Is it enough to climb the highest mountains Am I doing something helpful How can I turn my adventures into something that can help the world ”
Jerry learned that scientists need plants, rocks and water samples(样本)from the places far away to do research. But scientists can’t get there themselves as such places are hard to reach——only the bravest adventurers can make it. Jerry thought himself could do something to help. He then came up with an idea. He set up a team of top adventures to collect samples for scientists. By studying the samples, scientists could know more about the earth and find ways to protect it.
Recently Jerry and his adventurer friends have discovered a special plant life of Mountain Qomolangma. The samples they brought back have helped scientists how plants live in extreme(极端的)conditions.
For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures had made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me, what matters is doing something helpful while climbing the mountains. There is still much more we can do.” Jerry said to a newspaper.

According to a research more than 130 billion pounds of uneaten food go to waste in Laura’s country each year. That is about 30% of the yearly food supply (供应). It is a sad fact especially when you consider how many families and homeless people are in hunger.
When Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all every day, she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to give away uneaten food to homeless shelters (庇护所) in her community. In the past three years, the same project has spread to other schools and some fast food restaurants throughout the city. The project is called Feed& find, and has already fed thousands of people in her city.
How does it work Through an app, Feed& Find matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the app to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project is then sent to pick it up and take it to a shelter.
Pretty cool, right It’s not surprising that people in other cities have got in touch with Laura hoping that she could have develop similar projects for their communities.

Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.
Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly On the one hand, the elephants’ main lake, their only water source (来源), dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.
To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project (MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.
However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎) and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephant were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.
Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations (组织) have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. Elephant poaching has dropped to a very low level. The local people have learned to live peacefully with the elephants, one of the wildlife treasures in the world.

A lot of animals travel from one place to another. We call this migration (迁徙).
In Africa, large animals, like elephants and zebras, migrate to find food and water. They usually follow the same ways every year.
A lot of birds migrate to find food and better weather, too. They are usually birds that eat insects. They spend the summer in northern Europe, because there are lots of insects there. In winter there aren’t any insects, so the birds fly south to southern Europe and Africa.
Arctic terns (北极燕鸥) travel the furthest when they migrate. They spend the summer in the Arctic, but when winter comes, they fly to the Antarctic, because it’s summer there. The next year they fly back to the Arctic again. In one year these small birds travel 36,000 km from one end of the earth to the other and back again. Nobody knows how they do it.
Some fish migrate to breed. Salmons (鲑鱼) can swim over 20,000 km in their life. They are born in rivers in Ireland, Scotland and other places in northern Europe. The young fish swim down the river to the sea and into the Atlantic Ocean. They live in the ocean until they are grown-ups. Then they return to the river where they were born. They lay their eggs in the river and then they usually die. Salmons do this, because their eggs are safer in the river. Other fish can’t eat them.

Finally, you finish all your schoolwork and sit back in your chair. Suddenly you feel a headache and realize your eyes are painful. What’s going on Doctors say that many students are spending too much time in front of screens, especially during online classes. The following suggestions might help to protect your eyes.
THE 20-20-20 RULE This gives your eyes a break from long screen time. It suggests looking at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds after 20 minutes of work on the screen. You can then continue working without feeling pain. ●Studies show that people blink (眨眼睛) less often when looking at a screen. Keep your eyes wet by blinking often or using eye drops.
●Sit up straight about an arm’s length (长度) away from the screen. Make sure you’re looking down at your screen. Stand up and exercise often to avoid neck and shoulder pain.
●What about blue light blocking glasses (防蓝光眼镜) They may look cool, but research shows that blue light isn’t the biggest cause of eye tiredness. So ask doctors before putting them on.

Art, to many people, is a human expression of creativity. But in recent years, you may have read news about AI creating its own art, such as paintings or writing poems. Some people worry that AI might someday replace (取代) artists. But this worry seems to be unnecessary, at least for now. Many artists today are turning AI into a useful tool. Instead of replacing artists, AI is bringing artists more possibilities.
A piece of music created by AI has recently attracted attention. AI was used to turn a virus (病毒) into a piece of nearly two-hour long music. The project was led by a scientist and he tried a special note (音符) in each amino acid (氨基酸) of the virus. The AI then translated these notes into music.
Listeners found the project unbelievable. “It allows me to see the virus in a new way.” said one listener. This surprising marriage between science and art could not be achieved without AI. As a scientist wrote, “AI helps artists play around in creative ways, making things possible beyond what they have ever thought before.”
AI can also take care of repetitive tasks for artists. For example, in the comic and animation (动画) industries, artists don’t need to color in black-and-white line drawings over and over again because now AI tools can help with such work. It could give artists room to try more creative activities by cutting down the time it takes.

Animal behavior is an interesting and attractive study. Scientists research the ways animals use to look for food, which can help us understand how useful animals can be to humans.
Each country or area raises some animals. In the United States, people mainly eat meat from cows, chickens and pigs. In other countries, people might raise sheep for meat. These differences result from weather and other environmental conditions. People around the world eat many kinds of fish and shellfish (贝类) from oceans and rivers. In some countries, people don’t always eat some animals, such as dogs, while in other countries, such animals may become people’s favorite dishes.
In West Africa, animals provide humans with more than food. They have been helping people do daily work for thousands of years. Strong and quiet animals like horses and cows pull heavy things. Elephants, camels and other animals carry people and things from place to place. Carrier pigeons (信鸽) have been used to send messages.
People also get health benefits from animals. For example, dogs and cats can help calm people down. This is helpful for people fighting illnesses. Animals can also reduce stress, and help people learn new information, such as reading. When people are walking their dogs, it encourages exercise.
Animals and humans share space on the earth, so keeping a health y relationship with animals around us is an important thing.

Most people enjoy listening to music. But if you ask your classmates what they like listening to, you will get many different answers. Why do different people have different musical preference (偏好)
Researchers set out to answer these questions. They surveyed 350, 000 people from 50 different countries. Then, they detected some connections between musical preference and personality. The following were the results.
Outgoing people preferred danceable forms of music such as rap. Country music fans were shown to be more responsible in their jobs. The researchers guessed that worried people should like either sad music to express their helplessness or rhythmic music to improve their moods (心情). But it turned out that these people liked neither. Instead, they preferred loud music. Perhaps they liked to listen to this type of music to relax themselves.
The researchers also found that weather may influence people’s musical preference and personality. People in sunny places prefer danceable music. They may join an outdoor music club. They are more outgoing. This may be a result of longer daylight hours and warmer evenings. They encourage people to go outside to dance.
Of course, we can’t divide people into groups simply because of their musical tastes. The study just showed us that people of different cultures are more similar than we think. “People are divided by language and culture.” said Dr. David Greenberg. “But music is like a powerful bridge. It helps people communicate with other people.”

Do you know what a MOOC is MOOC is short for Massive (大量的) Open Online Course. Thousands of people can take a MOOC all at the same time. You can be anywhere in the world to take it. All you need is a computer and the Internet. MOOCs became very popular in the autumn of 2011, when Professor Sebastian Thrun from Stanford University opened his course up to any student anywhere, and 160,000 students in more than 190 countries signed up. This new kind of online classes is shaking up the higher education world.
For years, many colleges have offered classes online. MOOCs are always used in subjects like computer science or engineering. However, can MOOCs be used in other subjects like arts or philosophy (哲学)
Scott Anderson teaches philosophy at the University of British Columbia in Canada. He sees both good and bad sides to MOOCs. Scott says, “When students take some lessons, they needn’t be present to hear and get them.” He says more and more students in MOOCs can mean less communication between them and teachers. He also gives two ways to solve this problem—adding more teachers and making online discussion groups.
Lisa Jadwin teaches English and American literature and writing at St. John Fisher College in New York. She says online education has some weaknesses for her subjects. Lisa says, “What’s lost in online education is face-to-face communication. But the teaching of literature needs that.” She says some students can learn very well from talks, blogs and discussion groups. But she believes that mixed courses work best.
Although MOOCs are becomning more and more popular in the world, the traditional teaching ways are not going to be removed very quickly by the Internet instruction.

Playing Safely in Cold Weather
Children can play outside all year long. They just need to be dressed for the cold. Staying dry and active will also help them stay comfortably outside longer. These tips are also useful to adults.
Watch for wind.
In winter, the wind draws more heat from the body. Windy days can feel much colder. The temperature might be -5℃, but it can feel like -20℃ with the wind. Check the weather before going outside, and stay inside if it goes below -27℃.
Cover all parts of your body.
In temperture below -27℃, body parts that are not covered can freeze in 10 to 30 minutes. Keep the face warm with a neck warmer, a hat or a scarf.
Protect your mouth and face.
The wind and cold can make the surface of your body very dry. Use protection products to keep it wet.
Dress in layers (层).
Wear layers with an outer layer that is good against the wind. Don’t wear cotton in cold weather. A thick coat made of wool (羊毛) is a good choice.
Know about dangers in the cold.
If you can’t feel your hands, face or feet, or if they are pale, this could be a sign of frostbite (冻伤). When this happens, head inside right away, and warm the body part slowly with your hands or warm (not hot!) water. If the temperature is much too low, it will be dangerous to stay outside for a long time without enough clothes.

Should we put every job in the hands of machines Should we develop non-human minds that might finally become smarter than humans and finally replace us Should we risk losing control of our own future These questions were asked by many scientists last month in a science meeting.
In most people’s mind, the rapid development of AI is of great help to humans. For example, AI has helped humans develop new medicine and design new materials to help with climate change.
When ChatGPT, a program developed by OpenAI, was first open to the public, a million people used it within a week, and the number rapidly rose to 100 million within two months. It was widely used to do things like writing articles and creating speech articles.
However, some people are starting to worry. Will AI go against humans one day Will AI take our place and all the people lose their jobs Will bad people use AI to harm others
These worries make scientists stop developing AI and start to think about how we can make better use of this technology. Most of them agree that laws should be made to make sure that AI is used in a safe way.
Many governments are already taking action, though differently. For example, the UK, as well as the US, opens its arms for AI without any rules other than present ones because it regards it as a huge market. But Germany is more careful. It puts uses of AI in different areas into different levels of risk. Uses in some areas are not allowed, and companies that break the rules will be punished.
Making laws is the governments’ duty. For us common people, it may be more important to think about what we can do in order to work better with AI.

Watermelons used to come from Africa where it is hot all year. They grow best in warm temperatures. But could you grow one at the South Pole, the coldest place on Earth Scientists say yes.
Russian scientists tried an experiment (实验) to grow a watermelon. They work at a Russian research station at the South Pole, though watermelons usually don’t grow in such cold places. So the scientists had to use a greenhouse where they can control the temperature, light and water in it.
The team chose two kinds of watermelons to grow. The fruits are known for their delicious taste and they grow more quickly than other kinds. The scientists used the soil substitute (土壤替代物) instead of the normal soil. Special lighting acted as sunlight. There were no butterflies so scientists had to pollinate (授粉) the plants themselves. Only in this way can the flowers become fruits.
The scientists watched the seedlings grow. It took them 103 days to get watermelons to eat. They got eight watermelons and each weighted about 1 kilogram. The experiment was so successful that it shows watermelons can be grown in the coldest place on the planet.
One scientist said they were all glad. It was like a taste of summer. Watching the seedlings grow made the scientists happy. In fact, the station has grown plants before. Scientists grew vegetables such as cabbage in 2020. And they aren’t stopping with watermelons. Next, they plan to farm other fruits such as blackberries, blueberries and strawberries.

Do you often eat candies and desserts Are you crazy about cola and milk tea Do you know these snacks and drinks have a lot of sugar Eating too much sugar causes many health problems, even leads to high blood sugar level, which could bring us diabetes (糖尿病), heart disease, liver disease or even depression.
Besides sweet food and drinks, there is hidden sugar in everyday food. For example, there is much sugar in bread and yogurt. It is hard for us to avoid sugar, but do we have to stay away from it completely That’s impossible and unnecessary. After all, sugar is one of the energy sources that we need. What we must do is to control the sugar intake.
Here are some possible ways to help you. First, get to know how much sugar we need a day. World Health Organization (WHO) suggests adults and children should limit sugar intake to 25 grams or less every day. Then, check the ingredients list and buy food with the lowest sugar. What’s more, pay attention to our blood sugar level. Jessie Inchauspe, a French bestselling writer, shares some of her ideas to balance our blood sugar level.
· Eat foods in the right order.
Eat your vegetables first, followed by eggs and meat, then rice or bread.
· Eat vegetables before each meal.
It is better to have hot or cold green salad.
· Reach for vinegar (醋) before you eat.
This is having a teaspoon of vinegar in a glass of water before meals.
· Move after you eat, within 70 minutes.
It could be going for a 10-minute walk, doing a short workout, or doing some chores.
By now, you’ve already known how to improve sugar intake patterns. However, what we do is more important than what we say. Small steps can add up. Let’s begin to make changes on our own.

After 10 years of difficult talks, nearly 200 countries agreed to a new United Nations (UN) agreement to protect the world’s oceans. The agreement has been the first of its kind in 40 years. It plans to protect 30% of the open oceans by 2030.
Oceans cover about 71% of the Earth’s surface and are home to hundreds of thousands of different kinds of animals and plants. Healthy oceans are a very important part of a healthy planet. But the oceans are in trouble. Overfishing (捕捞过度) has had a terrible effect on many kinds of fish and other animals. Pollution from ships and other places has caused serious problems. In 1982, an agreement described the “high seas (公海)”, but it did not protect them. In these areas, all countries have the right to fish, send ships, and do research. The high seas cover about two-thirds of the ocean. But now people only protect 1. 2% of the areas.
Last December, over 110 countries agreed to protect 30% of their land and ocean areas by 2030. Without an international agreement, there was no way to make this goal meaningful for the whole ocean. The new agreement now makes this feasible.
The new agreement tries to turn 30% of the high seas into protected areas by 2030. It also says that activities planned for the high seas must first be examined to see what kind of influences they might have on the ocean environment. Businesses in some countries hope to make a lot of money by getting valuable things from the bottom of the sea. Other businesses hope to find plants or animals in the ocean that could lead to new discoveries and new medicines.
Many of the disagreements were about how valuable things would be shared between rich countries and poor ones. Poor countries wanted to make sure that the valuable things would help everyone, not just people in rich countries.

As Peter Ward wrote for The Culture Trip, art of every kind has always been influenced by technology. AI can become a useful tool to bring changes to the art world if it’s welcomed but not feared.
56. What do people worry about according to Paragraph 1
A. AI might become bad for humans.
