Chris Smith looked like any other young boy in his class: thick hair, a wide smile, and playing sports. By all appearances, life for Chris was the same as it was for a hundred other boys in the small town where he grew up, except for the constant evictions (驱赶), and eventually being homeless.
Chris’ father was reckless (鲁莽的) with finances and dishonest in business. His mother tried her best to run the home until Chris’ little brother drowned (溺亡), then his father went to prison, and finally the family fell apart.
“My mom shut down emotionally. Everything got worse,” Chris remembers. Then she was gone and ran away from home without telling Chris. He did the best he could, sleeping on his newly married sister’s sofa. “They didn’t have much money, and I know it was a burden to take me in at 17 years old, I was going to drop out from high school and make it on my own.”
But Chris’ history teacher had different ideas. When Chris’ study began to go down, she cornered him. “You’re the smartest kid in the class,” she told him. “If you don’t graduate, you’re going to regret it.”
“School was my safe place,” Chris says. School also offered him heat and food. It became the closest thing to home he could find, compared to his father’s old truck that became his bed and his study space. He remembers his hair freezing onto the window in the winter.
When graduation came, Chris earned a full scholarship to college and graduated in the top 10 of his class. When it’s time to apply for medical residencies, Chris set his sights high. He applied for residencies around the country and included the No. 1 program in the nation: Johns Hopkins. And then the letter came. Chris was in.
“I didn’t really think I had a chance. But I had learned to give everything my best shot. Life is never fair. But if you don’t give up, you will give yourself a better chance to make it,” Chris says.
4. Why did Chris’ mother leave home

Cycling is considered one of the most efficient ways to travel due to its small carbon footprint. Many people are happy to ride a bike in their everyday life. However, better infrastructure (基本设施) and a cultural shift are needed to ensure that more people will ride a bike. Bike kitchens are part of a worldwide movement that can help with such a challenge.
In bike kitchens, tools, used parts, and repair assistance are provided to their members. They donate bikes and have become spaces for social exchange. They also make efforts to improve basic infrastructure, which plays a key role in ensuring the safety and comfort of cyclists in areas such as the development of bike lanes and bike parking. But that alone is not enough. Building a cycling culture that is socially accepted to most, means having significant amounts of people developing skills of riding bikes.
Cycling has various benefits, like promoting physical and mental health. More importantly, the infrastructure needed for bikes doesn’t require a huge budget. Besides, bicycles are the most practical and sustainable means of travel for short and medium distance, and also for recreation and sport. Therefore, a cycling culture appears urgent and significant. For individuals in many developed countries, transport can be the largest part of their carbon footprint. Transport accounts for about one-fifth of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. For short or medium distances, bikes are one of the lowest-carbon ways to travel. Even more shockingly, using a bike instead of a car for short trips would reduce a person’s travel emissions by 75 percent.
Bike kitchens in particular, extend the lifespan of bikes and their parts. They help build a community economy that prevents waste generation, since most parts are secondhand, fixed, or reused. Either through the supply of tools, parts, workshops, fixing sessions, or bikes for free, bike kitchens encourage a more sustainable way of traveling that makes cities friendlier, while strengthening community values.
8. Which of the following can be done in bike kitchens
A. Exchanging bikes. B. Teaching others to ride bikes.
C. Purchasing the new parts. D. Developing riding skills.
9. What does the author want to stress in the text
A. Cycling is a sustainable way to travel.
B. Transport is still a challenging problem.
C Everyone should have an eco-friendly travel.
D. Bikes are also suitable for a long distance travel.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards bike kitchens according to the text
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Grateful.
11. What is the main idea of the text
A. Bike kitchens reduce people’s travel influences.
B. Bike kitchens are helping boost cycling culture.
C. Bike kitchens are gaining popularity in the world.
D Bike kitchens make cycling accessible to everyone.

Buying organic (有机的) food may not always be better for the planet or for human health than cheaper options grown with artificial pesticides, according to researchers.
There tend to be more birds and bees on organic farms but the benefits may be cancelled out because they produce an average of 19 to 25 perent less food per acre than conventional farms. This means that more land is needed to produce the same amount of food, and land being changed for agriculture is one of the greatest threats to wildlife, researchers at the University of British Columbia said.
Organic farms tend to use less energy and produce lower emissions, but “when lower organic yields are taken into account, greenhouse gas emissions might actually be higher under organic management.”
The authors of the study, published in Science Advances, said: “We don’t know whether organic agriculture provides any benefits for biodiversity if lower organic yields are taken into account.”
Organic farms tend to cause less nitrogen and phosphorus pollution of water systems, but the lower yields could mean that nitrogen loss per unit of food produced is higher than on conventional farms.
The authors argued that in countries such as Canada, where pesticide regulations are strict and diets are rich in micronutrients, the health benefits of choosing organic might be marginal. They said organically grown food probably contained slightly more micronutrients but it was not clear whether this provided “any actual health benefits to consumers”.
The team analyzed organic crop farming across 17 criteria including yield, impact on climate change, farmer livelihood and consumer health. “Organic is often proposed as a good solution to current environmental and food scarcity problems, but we found that the costs and benefits will vary heavily depending on the context,” Verena Seufert, one of the authors, said.
They concluded that organic farming is not the only solution to providing a sustainable source of food for an ever-growing global population, but does have an important role to play. “We need to stop the perception of organic and conventional agriculture as two ends of the spectrum. Instead, consumers should demand better practices for both so that we can achieve the world’s food needs in a sustainable way,” Ms. Seufert said.
The study, which involved a review of the scientific literature on the environmental and economic performance of organic farms, also found that they were highly dependent on animal manure (排泄物) from conventional farms and added: “It is not clear whether we would have enough organic fertilizers to feed everyone in the world with organic food”
Organic food is more expensive and “therefore less accessible to consumers with low income, they said.
12. What does the study find about organic farms
A. They are less than efficient. B. They rely on wildlife species.
C. They used to produce added emission. D. They use high-quality pesticides.
13. The word “marginal” (in paragraph 6) is closest in meaning to __________.
A. irregular B. unlimited C. unimportant D. irrelevant
14. What can be inferred from the passage about organic agriculture
A. Its benefits are yet to be confirmed by review of scientific literature.
B. It is perceived as reaching the end of its development like conventional agriculture.
C. It is regarded as the opposite of conventional agriculture.
D. Its drawbacks outweigh the benefits it yields in most cases.
15. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A. Organic Farming: Balancing Costs and Benefits
B. Organic Farming: Winner in Sustainable Agriculture
C. Organic Farming: A Cost-Effective Path to a Healthier Planet
D. Organic Farming: The Answer to Global Food Scarcity
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. C 15. A

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了有机食品的优点以及其缺点。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“There tend to be more birds and bees on organic farms but the benefits may be cancelled out because they produce an average of 19 to 25 per cent less food per acre than conventional farms. This means that more land is needed to produce the same amount of food, and land being changed for agriculture is one of the greatest threats to wildlife, researchers at the University of British Columbia said.(有机农场往往有更多的鸟类和蜜蜂,但这些好处可能会被抵消,因为它们每英亩生产的食物平均比传统农场少19%至25%。英属哥伦比亚大学的研究人员说,这意味着需要更多的土地来生产同样数量的食物,而土地被改变为农业是对野生动物的最大威胁之一)”可知,研究发现有机农场效率不高。故选A。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后句“They said organically grown food probably contained slightly more micronutrients but it was not clear whether this provided “any actual health benefits to consumers”.(他们表示,有机食品可能含有更少量的微量元素,但尚不清楚这是否“对消费者的健康有任何实际好处”)”可知,选择有机食品对健康的好处可能微乎其微的。所以marginal为“微小的,不重要的”之意。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段““We need to stop the perception of organic and conventional agriculture as two ends of the spectrum. Instead, consumers should demand better practices for both so that we can achieve the world’s food needs in a sustainable way,” Ms. Seufert said.(“我们需要停止认为有机农业和传统农业是两个极端。相反,消费者应该要求两方面都采取更好的做法,这样我们才能以可持续的方式满足世界粮食需求,”苏弗特女士说)”可推断,有机农业被认为是传统农业的对立面。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Buying organic (有机的) food may not always be better for the planet or for human health than cheaper options grown with artificial pesticides, according to researchers.(研究人员称,购买有机食品可能并不总是比使用人工杀虫剂种植的廉价食品对地球或人类健康更好)”结合文章主要介绍了有机食品的优点以及其缺点。故A选项“有机农业:平衡代价和好处”最符合文章标题。故选A。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My little sister, Meg, said that she wasn’t afraid of the dark anymore and she’d be OK staying with Aunt Lily in the country. “As long as you’re there, Mike,” she had said. Still, Mum was worried. Meg had never slept away from home, away from the city. So I told Mum I could handle everything.
Even though we were only staying overnight, Meg had brought six books-all about fairies (仙女). After we unpacked, Aunt Lily invited us to pick some flowers. As we followed her through the forest, Meg held my hand tightly. But once we reached the sunlit grassland, she let go. “Butterflies!” whispered Meg. She screamed with delight when one flew near her.
Maybe I had nothing to worry about, I thought. I still remembered when I was here last summer, I found some amazing insects, like fireflies (萤火虫) and walking sticks which I’d never seen in the city.
“Fairies are magical. See these beautiful flowers they grow!” she kept telling absolutely everything she knew about fairies. I was glad that if she kept it up until bedtime, then maybe she’d fall right to sleep.
Meg did keep chatting, right through supper. Then the sun began to set. “Does it get really dark out here at night ” she asked. Her eyes were fixed on the window.
“Sure, but we’ve got plenty of lights inside,” said Aunt Lily. She leaned over and gave Meg a warm smile. But I could tell she was still worried. “I could read to you.”
I hadn’t even finished a page when her bottom lip started shaking slightly. “Mike,” she said, her eyes starting to fill. “I want to go home.” I quickly searched through her book for something to keep her from crying.
The book fell open to a page that was dog-eared from use, a page that was obviously one of Meg’s favorites. The text read: “Among the trees deep in the forest, the lights of fairies gleam (闪烁).” Aha! How could I forget those “tiny fairies” out there

【答案】官方范文1
“Meg, there’s something outside I want to show you,” I whispered. Meg quickly covered her eyes with her hands. “I don’t want to look,” She sniffled. “Come to the window, OK It’s something you will like. I’m here. You’ll be all right.” I promised. When we were finally reached the window, I quietly switched off the lamp. A whisper of cool, damp air sifted through the screen of the open window. Outside, thick chunks of trees reached up into black clouds of leaves and fireflies hovered around like twinkling stars. Meg pressed her hands against the window, pushing herself away. But then she noticed them. Her stiffened arms relaxed.
“Tiny fairies, Mike!” she said, pressing her forehead against the window, “Everywhere!” They weren’t fairies, of course. But the winking lights really existed and were, in my opinion, better than magic. I wanted to tell Meg about these incredible insects that flashed in the dark, signaling to each other. Then I looked down into Meg’s shining eyes, and I decided she could learn about fireflies some other time. Meg was so absorbed in the breathtaking scene that she completely forgot her homesickness and soon fell asleep against my shoulder. I guess it turned out that I could handle everything-with a little help from the magical fairies. (216)
官方范文2
“Meg, there’s something outside I want to show you,” I whispered. With a tender smile and a touch of anxiety, I approached my little princess. Kneeling down, I wrapped my arm around her. Still fixing her eyes on the window, Meg whimpered, her voice quivering, “Mike, I don’t like the dark.” “I know, I know,” I soothed, gently running my fingers through her hair. “But hey, do you remember the tiny fairies we read about in the forest They are here to protect you!” She turned to me with watery eyes, her face etched with curiosity. Encouraged by my reassurance and steady voice, she followed me to the window.
“Tiny fairies, Mike!” she said, pressing her forehead against the window, “Everywhere!” Outside, a troop of fireflies twinkled like tiny fairies, casting a soft, magical glow in the darkness. Meg’s excitement bubbled over as she watched the fascinating dance of light outside. The night enveloped us with its gentle embrace, wrapping us in a blanket decorated with diamonds and warmth. Together, we marveled at the beauty of nature’s own miniature spectacle, feeling as if we had stepped into a page of Meg’s beloved fairy book. After a while, Meg’s eyes grew heavy and she peacefully drifted off to sleep. I was quite certain she would meet her fairies in her dreams. (220)
官方范文3
“Meg, there’s something outside I want to show you,” I whispered. Amusement tinged my voice as I tried to draw her attention to the outside. “It’s too dark!” Meg shook her head, with fear written all over her face. Before I could say anything else, she burst into tears and curled up in my arms, begging me to take her home. “Do you want to see the tiny fairies ” I whispered again, praying quietly that I could capture her interest. Much to my relief, the mention of “fairies” seemed to work wonders. Meg dried her tears, looking up at me with misty eyes filled with curiosity. “Where are they ” she asked eagerly as I placed her by the window, drawing back the curtains to reveal the gleaming fireflies.
“Tiny fairies, Mike!” she said, pressing her forehead against the window, “Everywhere!” There in the dark of the night, an enchanting scene unfolded as numerous fireflies illuminated the surroundings. “Fairies are magical. They drive away the darkness!” Meg exclaimed with sheer delight, completely forgetting her fear. “Yes, they are!” I nodded with a smile of agreement. She chattered excitedly about the magical fairies until she grew drowsy. Resting in my arms, Meg gazed outside the window with rapt attention, completely captivated by the gleaming creatures. It didn’t take long before she fell sound asleep. Stroking her head affectionately, I breathed a sigh of relief. A sense of achievement rose up, not only for my success in lulling my little sister to sleep, but also for helping her overcome her fear of darkness.(260)

B It is perceived as reaching the end of its development like conventional agriculture.

How could I forget those “tiny fairies” out there
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
