School was always something I loved because I always enjoyed learning more. I never felt afraid of going to school early in the morning, and I never tried to get out of any work. I stayed after school every chance I got. I did most of the work I could, got the best grades I could, and in the end, I graduated from high school with honors. All my success was because of the teachers I had who helped me, pushed me, and made learning a fun thing to do.
At the beginning of the school year, I had a lot of trouble leaving my mom in the mornings, but Mrs. Trainer always sat with me, talked with me, and helped me feel OK without my mom. She was understanding, kind, and always made the classroom a comfortable place. Mrs. Trainer also sat down and helped me learn; I was, and still am, the worst speller, but she tried her hardest to help me.
The second was my senior high school English teacher, Mr. Stonerock. Mr. Stonerock was able to make English and writing fun, especially when we had eight-page papers to hand in. Some of my favorite high school memories were in his classes. Mr. Stonerock also taught my class APA format (格式) which to me is invaluable. I use it every day in my life. He put up with so many shenanigans (恶作剧) from my classmates and me and always did it with a smile.
My point to all of this is that there are amazing and caring teachers out there whether they teach college level classes, high school level classes, or primary level classes. I have had more influential teachers than I can count. I am still in touch with some of my high school teachers, who give me life advice and guide me. Teachers are invaluable resources and no one can take their place.
4. Which of the following can best describe the author as a student
A. Creative and proud. B. Confident and polite.
C. Kind-hearted and honest. D. Hard-working and excellent.
5. How did Mrs. Trainer help the author
A. By teaching him like a mother.
B. By helping him to be the best speller.
C. By asking him easy questions in class.
D. By learning about his habits from his mother.
6. What is the most useful skill the author learnt from Mr. Stonerock
A. How to finish papers quickly.
B. How to learn English in a fun way.
C. How to use APA format correctly.
D. How to get on well with classmates.
7. What is the purpose of this text
A. To show how to be a good teacher.
B. To stress teachers’ duties and responsibilities.
C. To stress teachers’ importance to the author.
D. To share the author’s experience as a teacher.
C
In my early teens, I was once given a film camera as a gift . On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its beauty. Rushing home, I put the spent film in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it would come out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing.
As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change.
I took out the camera and dusted it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me.
The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I've taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.
8. What did the author think of taking photos as a young boy
A. Inspiring and practical. B. Tiring yet delightful.
C. Exciting and worthwhile. D. Difficult yet engaging.
9. Why did the author stop taking photos according to paragraph 2
A. He wanted to focus on his work. B. He was struck by sudden sorrow.
C. He attempted to behave like an adult. D. He was faced with increasing pressure.
10. What did the author get from picking up his hobby
A. More fun in the daily routine. B. New journeys in the wild.
C. Better skills of observation. D. Different styles of photography.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Revisiting Lost Childhood Memories B. Appreciating Beauty Behind the Lens
C. Escaping Teenage Sadness with Camera D. Regaining Pleasure Through Photography
D
Some American skateboarders are creating new moves by combining longboarding and dance. This version of the activity is already popular in southern California. It has also become popular in cities like Paris and Seoul.
Reporters from The Associated Press recently spoke with some skaters about the unusual activity. The AP described it as bringing together skating and dance —with a little danger as well. Hannah Dooling told the AP she often joins friends in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, where they enjoy longboard dancing and doing tricks.
Longboards started out as a way for surfers to keep in shape when they were not in the water. They are longer than traditional skateboards. The added length can be more difficult to move with, but many skaters say they can be more graceful on a longboard. Today, skaters use longboards to make sidewalk turns and bomb hills. They also use them for longboard dancing.
Dooling, who is 30 years old, showed off some of her moves during a recent night in an empty parking lot in Santa Monica. She was joined by her 33-year-old friend Yun Huang, Jane Kang and Christie Goodman. Kang and Goodman are both 29. The meetups are supported by the Dancing Foundation. The non-profit group started with assistance from American technology company Google. The organization was started by Achille Brighton, a 39-year-old software engineer.
Longboard dance is still quite young. But Brighton told the AP that it has already spread worldwide—from southern California to Paris to Seoul. He said those places have public squares and a lot of open spaces where people can watch the skaters.
“You don’t need skate parks. You just need roads,” Brighton said. “And because you do it in public, people see it. And they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s kind of cool.’”
“I think one thing that ties together longboarding and longboard dancing is danger. You might miss a step; you might fall; you might get hurt,” he said. “And that’s the exciting bit.”
12. Which is the best description of longboard dance
A. It’s a graceful traditional sport.
B. It’s a combination of skating and dance.
C. It’s mainly popular in southern California.
D. It’s a way for surfers to keep in shape when they were not in the water.
13. Who is the oldest among the four longboard dancers
A. Hannah Dooling. B. Jane Kang. C. Yun Huang. D. Christie Goodman.
14. What does Brighton think of longboard dance
A. Young but popular. B. Cool but costly.
C. Difficult but graceful. D. Dangerous but exciting.
15. How is the passage mainly developed
A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By explaining the reasons.

If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin, it might have been “slow”. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the schoolyard races. However, his smile was brighter than the sun in June; his heart was bigger than the mountain sky. Kevin’s enthusiasm for life was quite infectious.
When Kevin joined the boys’ school basketball team, basketball became the center of his life. At practice, he worked so hard that you’d think he was preparing for the NBA. He liked to stand in a certain place near the free-throw line and shoot at the basket. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball after ball. “Look at me, Coach!” he’d shout at Randy, jumping up and down with the excitement of shooting.
Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game didn’t help them win. More balls fell out of the basket than into it, and the boys lost every game that season, except one—the night when it snowed and the other team couldn’t make it to the game.
It was a cold snowing afternoon when their last game came. As the last-place team, they played against the first-place team. The game went pretty much the same as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin’s team stood nearly 30 points behind.
At that point, one of Kevin’s teammates called time-out. As he came to the side, Randy couldn’t imagine why the time-out had been called. “Coach,” said the boy. “This is our last game and I know that Kevin has played in every game, but he’s never made a basket. I think we should let Kevin make a basket.” With the game completely out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so the plan was made. When they had the ball again, they passed it to Kevin who was standing in his special place near the free-throw line.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

A. How to finish papers quickly.

Hannah Dooling told the AP she often joins friends in Santa Monica Los Angeles, where they enjoy longboard dancing and doing tricks.
Longboards started out as a way for surfers to keep in shape when they were not in the water. They are longer than traditional skateboards. The added length can be more difficult to move with but many skaters say they can be more graceful on a longboard.
B 13. C 14. D 15. B

Kang and Goodman are both 29.(最近的一个晚上,30岁的Dooling在Santa Monica的一个空停车场展示了她的一些动作。
根据文章最后一段““I think one thing that ties together longboarding and longboard dancing is danger. You might miss a step; you might fall; you might get hurt,” he said. “And that’s the exciting bit.”(Brighton说:“我认为把长板和长板舞蹈联系在一起的是危险。你可能会错过一步;你可能会跌倒;你可能会受伤。这就是令人兴奋的地方。”)”可知,在Brighton看来长板舞在给人带来危险的同时也因为危险而让人兴奋。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Hannah Dooling told the AP she often joins friends in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, where they enjoy longboard dancing and doing tricks.(Hannah Dooling告诉美联社,她经常和洛杉矶Santa Monica的朋友们在一起,在那里他们喜欢跳长板舞和变戏法。)”和第四段“Dooling, who is 30 years old, showed off some of her moves during a recent night in an empty parking lot in Santa Monica. 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Helping a stranger can be easier than advising someone we’ve known forever. When friends and family ask for advice, it is more complicated. ____16____ To give better advice, try less fixing and more listening.
____17____ You should stay open if you can. Keep your hands free. Keep your face neutral and try to avoid looks of shock or judgment. If you look like you’re tense or you’re distracted, the person might not open up to you as much as you would want them to.
You can’t always give advice right now. Texts and FaceTime might be immediate, but your advice doesn’t have to be. You can politely explain to someone that you want to give them your full attention when you’re ready. ____18____
You don’t have to fix the problem. People who ask “What should I do ” often want to process a problem themselves. ____19____ A friend’s priorities might not match your own, but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong.
Pay attention to patterns. When you’ve known someone for years, you’re a witness to their patterns and repeated mistakes. 【
根据上文“Helping a stranger can be easier than advising someone we’ve known forever. When friends and family ask for advice, it is more complicated. (帮助一个陌生人可能比建议一个我们认识很久的人更容易。当朋友和家人寻求建议时,情况就复杂多了)”可知,上文指出当朋友和家人向你寻求建议时可能情况比较复杂。下文“To give better advice, try less fixing and more listening. (要给出更好的建议,试着少处理,多倾听。)”,此处给出了解决这个问题的建议。F项“If we don’t get it right, we could hurt someone we love. (如果我们做不好,就会伤害到我们爱的人)”,F项承上启下,其中it呼应上文的情况giving advice to friends and family,而someone we love呼应上文friendsand family,同时因为F项提到的不良后果,顺接下文:针对这一问题给出建议。
根据下文“You should stay open if you can. Keep your hands free. Keep your face neutral and try to avoid looks of shock or judgment. If you look like you’re tense or you’re distracted, the person might not open up to you as much as you would want them to. (如果可以的话保持开放的态度。放开你的手。保持面部表情中立,尽量避免露出震惊或评判的表情。如果你看起来很紧张或心不在焉,这个人可能不会像你希望的那样对你敞开心扉。)”可知,本段内容均与身体语言(Body language)相关,故A项“Body language matters. (肢体语言很重要。)”符合语境,为本段的中心句。故选A项。
上文“You can’t always give advice right now. Texts and FaceTime might be immediate, but your advice doesn’t have to be. You can politely explain to someone that you want to give them your full attention when you’re ready. (你不能总是当时给出建议。短信和FaceTime可能是即时的,但你的建议不一定是即时的。你可以礼貌地向某人解释,当你准备好了,你想给他们全部的注意力。)”可知,当被问及建议时,无需马上给出;E项“Otherwise, you can do more harm than good. (否则,你会弊大于利。)”与上文形成对比关系,指出了如果不这样做的后果,上下文衔接连贯顺畅。故选E项。
【19题详解】
上文“People who ask ‘What should I do ’ often want to process a problem themselves. (那些问‘我该怎么办?’的人经常想自己解决问题。)”,下文“A friend’s priorities might not match your own, but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong. (朋友的优先级可能和你的不一样,但这并不意味着他们是错的。)”可知,有时候我们不需要过多干涉他们的选择。G项“You’re giving good advice if you can help them get there on their own. (如果你能帮助他们自己做到这一点,你就给出了很好的建议。)”,与段落大意相符,其中的help them get there on their own与上文中的process a problem themselves及下文中的a friend’s priorities相呼应,G项承上启下。故选G项。
设空处在句中,上句“Instead of saying, ‘Ugh, you’ve said this 15, 000 times, ’ you can ask questions. (不要说‘啊,你已经说了15000次了’,你可以问问题。)”,以及“‘What do you think that means ’ or ‘ 5 ’ can be a good one when you’re trying to get someone to consider their own cycle.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
His first shot bounced around but missed. As soon as Kevin’s teammates had the ball again, they passed it to Kevin who was standing in the certain place near the free-throw line. He shot it slowly, but he missed it again. Nevertheless, all the players of his team kept throwing the ball to him and clapped him with encouragement. Very soon the audience figured out what was happening, so one by one they stood up and clapped their hands. The whole playground thundered with the clapping and shouting, “Kevin! Kevin!” And Kevin just kept shooting.
Finally, the ball took one bounce and went in unexpectedly. With arms shooting high into the air, Kevin shouted, “I won! I won!” He jumped high and hugged every teammate excitedly. Everyone could see tears welling in his eyes. They began to shout wildly and clap their hands to congratulate him. The feathery snow danced in the late afternoon air, making a beautiful sight. The clock ticked off the last few seconds and the first-place team remained undefeated. Even though they lost this game again that afternoon, everyone left the playground truly feeling like a winner.
