British people are famous for apologizing (道歉) in almost every situation. They apologize for asking a question, for the bad weather or for a cough. They are probably the people who apologize most in the world.
British people use the word “sorry”quite a lot. Usually, if they want to ask a stranger about the time, they would say “Sorry to bother (打扰) you. Do you know what time it is ” If they’re five minutes late for a meeting with someone, they would usually greet (和……打招呼) the person by saying “Sorry, I’m late!”
They use the word “sorry” in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has ▲ a little over time. The main dictionary meaning of “sorry” is “feeling sad or regret (懊悔)”. But normally, when British people want to ask a stranger a question, they start with “sorry”. In this situation, they don’t really feel sad or regret.
So what does “sorry” really mean And why do the British use “sorry” so much Well, in British culture, saying “sorry” is a way to be polite, especially to people who they don’t know very well.
It’s also a very clever way for British people to get what they want. In a study, a person asked different strangers on a rainy day if he could use their phones in order to make a call. When he asked one group of strangers without apologizing first, he was only successful in borrowing their phones 9% of the time. Nevertheless, when he said “sorry” to the other group of strangers before asking if he could use their phones, he was successful 47% of the time. So maybe saying “sorry” is not just about being polite, but it is also a good way to get what you want!

A. be polite B. get what you want C. express sad feelings D. show that you feel regret
( )59. What’s the best title for the passage
What’s the best way to apologize B. Why do the British say “sorry” so much
C. What should you do when you feel upset D. How can you communicate with others well
