A
Last year I went on holiday to southern Spain with my best friends, Jenny and Alice.
The Spanish people are very warm to visitors. Although I suggest you should know a few simple words in Spanish to communicate with local people, the Spanish people are willing (乐意的) to speak in English. When we arrived, we didn’t know where to find a hotel. I came to an old man and asked him for help politely. With his help, we got to a cheap but wonderful hotel, which even had a swimming pool. There we really enjoyed ourselves.
This year, Jenny is going to the UK with her parents, so it will be just Alice and me. Alice wants us to go on an adventure holiday in Africa. That means we have to go walking in the desert and sleep out in the open. She says it will be better than having a lazy holiday because we will learn about the world around us and see some wild animals. I’m not sure whether I want to go to Africa. For me, a holiday means relaxing on a beach not walking all the way. Alice says that we will see elephants and have some amazing experiences. I think she’s bored with lying in the sun all day. I have to make up my mind by next Monday so that she can buy plane tickets. It will cost 1,400 each to go to Africa but for two weeks in France, less than half that money will be enough.
21. Which word can best describe the old man
A.Funny. B.Serious. C.Kind. D.Shy.
22. Where is Jenny going this year
A.To France. B.To the UK. C.To Africa. D.To Spain.

We all know that the British people love their manners (礼仪). They are part of their national identity (特性), as well as having fish and chips and complaining about the weather. Recently I read online that they say “sorry” up to eight times a day.
After some research I have not been able to find any specific reasons why they are like this. I suppose, for centuries, manners, including how they behave at table and talk to other people have been one of the differences between the lower and upper classes and those manners show their social classes. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative (保守的) country. There are many articles suggesting that their seemingly polite attitude of always saying “please” and “thank you” is quite false because it is impossible for a person to always feel that he or she wants to thank someone or say “please”.
Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of two ways: they are too polite and hold back their feelings or they are not polite at all and express their true feelings directly. Some British people are tired of pretending that they are always happy and having to please others. But sometimes because they feel they have to be polite, they are prevented from saying what they truly think.
24. What don’t the British people often do
A.Eating fish and chips. B.Having no good manners.
C.Being polite to others. D.Talking about the weather.
25. The British people say “_________” up to eight times every day.
A.hello B.thank you C.I don’t know D.sorry
26. According to the passage, why are the British people so polite
① The upper classes should have good manners.
② They have learned much about politeness at school.
③ They like to hold back their true feelings.
④ They are not honest at all.
A.①② B.③④ C.①③ D.②④
27. What does the underlined word “pretending” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Planing. B.Acting. C.Imagining. D.Tasting.

Every English learner needs to know how to ask for something in English. There are a number of ways to do this.
If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say “Give me that”, but ask kindly as the following examples, “Do you have a pen I could borrow ” “Is there any wine ” “Did you buy any bread ”
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could”, “may” or “might”. It’s also possible to use “can” in some special situations. In the past, “can” was not used when people asked for something, but meant ability. In the UK, people mainly use “Can you lend me… ” or “Can I have… ” In the US, this is still considered to be wrong and “May I have… ” is preferred.
It’s common to use “Could you lend/hand/give… ” You can also use “May/Can I borrow… ” “Could/Can you lend me… ” “May I have… ” “Could you hand/give me… ” Do not begin a sentence with “please”, but you can add “please” at the end of the sentence to be polite.
28. What can we ask if we know someone has something
A.A direct question. B.A no question.
C.A yes question. D.A polite question.
29. What didn’t people say when they wanted something politely in the past
A.Can I use your dictionary B.Could you lend me your bike
C.May I try your computer now D.Might I take your car today
30. Which of the following is a correct polite expression according to the passage
A.Do you give me any milk, please B.Please could you lend me your ruler
C.May I have some tea, please D.Please could you hand me a knife
31. What’s the main idea of the passage
A.How to express or ask politely. B.What to do when we are polite.
C.How to describe our ideas. D.What to do with our language problems.

Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.
In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all whether rich or poor, clever or stupid—one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough. In such countries we find a far larger number of people with university degree. They refuse to do what they think “low” work, and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor (教授). We can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns...
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that it is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.
32. The writer of the passage thinks that ______.
A.free education won’t help to solve problems
B.education can solve most of the world’s problems
C.free education for all probably leads to a perfect world
D.all the social problems can’t be solved by education
33. The purpose of education is ______.
A.to choose officials for the country B.to build a perfect world
C.to let everyone receive education D.to prepare children mainly for their future work
34. What does the underlined word “fashionable” mean
A.new B.old C.popular D.possible
35. The writer wants to show it’s true that ______.
A.our society needs all kinds of jobs B.our society needs free education for all
C.a farmer is more important than a professor D.work with hands is the most important

The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into the night and from night into day over and over by spinning (旋转) of the earth. At the equator (赤道) day and night are sometimes the same length. They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o’clock in the morning and set at 6 o’clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted (倾斜) toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere (半球) gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.
36. A place is moved from day into night and from day over and over by ________ of the earth.
A.the pushing B.the pulling C.the spinning D.the passing
37. At the equator, day is as long as night ________.
A.sometimes B.never C.usually D.always
38. When the North Pole is tilted toward the sun, the Northern Hemisphere gets ________ sunlight.
A.less B.more C.all D.no
39. When it is winter in China, ________.
A.the USA is tilted toward the sun
B.the South Pole is tilted away from the sun
C.the North Pole is tilted toward the sun
D.the North Pole is tilted away from the sun

Jaden is a six-year-old boy. He experienced the unlucky things of life twice. First he lost his dad when he was four and his mom died unexpectedly in her sleep last month. Jaden’s heart was broken. His parents’ death hit him a lot.
But things always go towards a good side. A few weeks later, Jaden told his aunt that he was tired of seeing everyone sad all the time. He’d like to see more smiles around him. He hoped that the number of the smiles could reach 100.
Then he asked his aunt to buy him some little toys and take him to the center of the city. “I’m trying to make people smile,” said Jaden. At first, he was not sure if the people passing by would like to receive his toys. In fact, he was always successful and got close to his dream step by step, because no one could refuse such a little boy’s giving and expecting.
“I’m keeping a count of 100 smiles,” said Jaden. When asked if he could make it, he answered, “I think I can.”
