Alaska is disappearing slowly, but surely. It is believed that since the 1950s, as much as 15% of Alaska’s land area has disappeared. How can a whole Alaska be disappearing The problem is that Alaska’s glaciers are melting(融化). The state has more than 100,000 glaciers. These glaciers cover about 75,000 square kilomcters, or 5% of the state’s area.
According to a recent report by the US Geological Survey. 99% percent of Alaska’s glaciers are diminishing(减少). This diminishing seems mainly because of the increase in global temperatures. Since the 1960s, the average year-round temperature has increased by almost 3℃. Besides, the average winter temperature has increased by over 6℃. Presently, an estimated 100 cubic kilometers of ice isdisappearing from Alaskan glaciers every year. It may be even more in the near future.
Another problem facing Alaska is its melting permafrost (冻土). Much of the land in Alaska used to be forever frozen or frozen for most of the year. Now, the melting permafrost is causing anumber of problems for people living in Alaska. Roads and public poles are falling down. Also, the hard permafrost that prevented beaches from eroding (被侵蚀) during storms is now melting. Peoplewho live along Alaska’s coasts are being forced to move away. For villages on small low islands, one terrible storm could wipe out the whole community.
The melting permafrost and increasing temperatures are both influencing the forests of Alaska. As the permafrost under the forests melts, insects that normally do not turn up until the wamer seasons are appearing sooner. If something can’t be done to change things, people will not see Alaska’s forests at the end of the century.
Some scientists believe that human activities have something to do with a global increase in weather temperature. Whatever the cause of rising temperatures may be, the fact remains that temperatures are warming, influencing Alaska for the worse. Terribly, this could be a preview of what will happen to the rest of the world in the next century.

Imagine mountains held in silver water, shining in the spring sun. Summer sees the mountains turn green with growing rice. During autumn these same mountains are gold, and in winter they are covered with white frost. These are the colours of the Longji Rice Terraces (梯田).
These teraces were built by the local Zhuang and Yao people in Guangxi. Work on the terraces took them hundreds of years from Yuan Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty. Reaching as far as the eye can see, these terraces cover tall mountains, often from the bottom to the very top.
So why did these people go to so much trouble to turn the mountains into terraces Firstly, thereare few large, flat (平坦的) areas of land here. Building the terraces meant that they could increase more ficlds to grow rice. Secondly, the flat terraces catch the rainwater and stop the soil from beingwashed away.
But perhaps what is most meaningful is the way people have worked in harmony (和谐) with nature to make these terraces. The terraces are cleverly shaped, with hundrcds of waterways (水道) that connect with each other. During the rainy season, it is along these waterways that rainwater moves down the mountains and into the terraces. The sun heats the water and turns it into vapour. This forms clouds and then rain falls down onto the mountain terraces once again.
Although modern technology could help produce more crops, these terraces still mean a lot to the local people. For them, traditions hold much value. This knowledge is passed down through families, which means that people continue to use ancient methods of farming to keep the terraces.
Today, the Longji Rice Terraces receives high praise, and thousands of visitors come to enjoythis great wonder created by people and nature working together. Want to know more about it Come to explore it by yourself!

Today, the soldiers in Xi'an’s terracotta museum are light brown, but they weren’t always this color. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple. Sadly, most of the colors did not last. Before their discovery, the clay soldiers were protected by being underground. When they were founded, however, the air caused thecoating (涂层) under the paint to fall off. The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking with it important pieces of history.
The first emperor of China, Qin Shihuang, ordered the construction of a huge army of life-sized terracotta soldiers. He hoped they would protect his tomb after his death.
New techniques are now starting to find the army’s true colors. Archaeologists have recently discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features, including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes. Researchers have developed a special liquid ( a kind of water with medicine) to help the soldiers remain colors. After they find a soldier archaeologists use the liquid to protect them. They then cover it in plastic.
Archaeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around Xi'an’s terracotta soldiers. It’s important not to disturb the dirt, so the colors won’t be lost, “We are treating the earth as an artifact, says archeologist Rong Bo, the museum’s leading chemist. The next challenge, says Rong, is to find a way to apply the colors to the ary again. Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin’s army back to life in full color.
