I heard some good news recently. My 91-year-old grandfather called me to test his new hearing aid. For the first time in a long time, he could hear my voice. It thrilled us both.
I soon found out there was another reason my grandparents were so happy—their new audiologist(听觉病矫治专家),Anna. Unlike the previous providers they'd been dealing with, Anna gave time and attention. Anna not only ensured the new hearing aid worked as it should, but also offered to go to my grandparents' apartment to show them how to use it.
Such kindness might sound rare, but I've since started wondering: What if it's more common than we think
It started with some research that showed people often underestimate(低估)the willingness of strangers to engage with, or even befriend them. Then I came across a study that suggested news coverage of current affairs tends to be more negative than positive because humans tend to give negative events more attention.
Negative stories can attract our attention and prepare us for disappointment. But if we don't engage with positive ones, they might lead us to be more critical of the world, more defensive and less hopeful than we need to be.
So I think sometimes what we hear, see, or even know might not be the whole picture. The truth might be hidden from us, requiring us to notice and discover it.We could start by asking ourselves whether we are focusing more on negative or positive stories and whether we are letting negative news surround us. Maybe even paying more attention to good news or making a point of sharing good news will help.
Anna's attitude was remarkable. She went beyond the call of duty and, upon leaving, refused to accept anything but words as thanks.
Why not remind ourselves that, for all of the bad that's in the world and in the news, behind the scenes, in people's ordinary lives, lie untold stories of extraordinary good.
How was Anna different from previous audiologists
A. She offered her patients personal assistance.
B. She displayed more patience and professionalism.
C. She refused to accept payment for the hearing aid.
D. She paid little attention to her patients' needs.
Why are news reports on current events usually more negative than positive
A. To warn people of potential risks.
B. To attract audiences more effectively.
C. To encourage people to seek out the truth.
D. To reveal the harshness of reality.
What is a potential consequence of focusing only on negative stories
A. Improved ability to cope with stress.B. Increased optimism and hope.
C. A reduced sense of security.D. A more objective view of the world.
What does the author suggest people do
A. Take advantage of others' kindness.
B. Share only positive news stories.
C. Pay less attention to negative news.
D.Maintain a positive outlook on the world.

Imagine a world where we can stop diseases before they start and fix environmental problems using specially designed organisms. This isn't from a sci-fi movie; it's the real work of synthetic biology(合成生物学), and this is what we do.
We are a team of undergraduate researchers from Nanjing Agricultural University, and we have created a new way to fight a harmful substance(物质)in wine using synthetic biology. This achievement earned us a gold medal at the International Genetic Engineering Machine(iGEM) competition in 2023.
Studies on synthetic biology are similar to piling LEGO bricks, but in this case, the bricks are pieces of DNA. Scientists put these pieces together to give cells(细胞)new abilities.
Over the course of six months, we successfully designed a DNA structure that can detect a dangerous toxin(毒素) called Ochratoxin A(OTA), which can cause serious health problems like cancer and kidney damage in humans. The structure looks like a key chain and it can change part of its structure once it identifies the targeted OTA, making the invisible OTA easier to detect.
The next step is to break OTA down during wine production to make the product safer and healthier. Through trial and error(反复试验), we managed to create another puzzle-like structure with a special enzyme(酶) connected at the end. “The enzyme works as the ‘knife’ to kill OTA,” said project designer Zhou Yuchen, who is only 21 years old. This structure can be added to the wine as a probiotic(益生菌), which is totally harmless.
“This is more than an academic project; it’s a cost-effective solution that could be used globally," said Zhou.
Back in 2019, another team of students from our university came up with a method to fight malaria(疟疾). They used genetically modified(转基因的)bacteria to stop the malaria parasite(寄生虫) from growing in mosquitoes. This offers a sustainable(可持续的)way to control malaria without using chemicals. In another study, the team developed bacteria that can help earthworms turn lead, a dangerous chemical, into safe minerals. As these worms live in the soil, they can create a safer and healthier agricultural environment.
While synthetic biology has great potential, it also comes with risks. Creating new life forms or changing existing ones can have big impacts on nature. There are concerns about accidentally releasing these new organisms into the environment and the potential for misuse, such as in the creation of biological weapons.
While synthetic biology presents many opportunities for important advancements in our lives, we believe it must be pursued with care and responsibility.
What is synthetic biology research compared to in the text
A. Shooting a sci-fi movie.
B. Building with LEGO bricks.
C. Solving a jigsaw puzzle.
D. Programming a computer.
What is the purpose of the DNA structure designed by the team at the beginning
A. To simplify the detection of OTA.
B. To remove OTA during wine production.
C. To turn OTA into a harmless substance.
D. To prevent OTA from damaging the heart.
Why does the author mention another team in the third to last paragraph
A. To contrast different techniques in synthetic biology.
B. To illustrate the complexity of synthetic biology projects.
C. To stress the importance of teamwork in synthetic biology.
D. To highlight the practical applications of synthetic biology.
What is a concern about synthetic biology mentioned in the text
A. The long time needed to undertake experiments.
B. The high cost of synthetic biology research.
C. The possible negative impacts on nature.
D. The threat to global agricultural development.

Among all the search engines developed by US companies over the years, Google stands out as the most unique-so unique that its name was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2006 and became synonymous(同义的) with online searching.
In 2020, the US Department of Justice sued Google for illegally dominating the online search market, reported the BBC. The court's decision finally came on Aug 5, with the tech giant losing.
“Google is a monopolist(垄断者), and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly," said the ruling. The result was regarded as “a historic win for the American people" by Merrick Garland, head of the Department of Justice, as this was the first time in the past 25 years that the US government won an antitrust case aimed at stopping a big tech company from taking over the market.
In court, prosecutors(检察官) argued that Google had broken antitrust laws by signing exclusive contracts(排他性合同) with consumer electronics companies such as Apple and Samsung. Under these contracts, Google has been paying more than 10 billion dollars (about 71.5 billion yuan) every year to be set as the default(默认) search engine on digital devices. This has allowed Google to occupy around 90 percent of the American online search market, making it incredibly difficult for competitors to enter the market, said The Guardian.
Search engines are not the only victims(受害者); advertisers have been hurt as well, wrote Zena Assaad, a senior lecturer at Australian National University, on The Conversation. Taking advantage of its monopolistic position, Google has become ubiquitous. "This is why Google can charge high advertising prices because there is slim competition in terms of visibility(曝光度)," Assaad analyzed.
At Google, the court's ruling has been met with resistance. "This decision recognizes that Google offers the best search engine, but concludes that we shouldn't be allowed to make it easily available," said Kent Walker, Google's president of global affairs, in a statement. In his opinion, Google's dominance occurred purely because it offered a better product.
Google intends to appeal(上诉) the ruling, and the entire process may take as long as five years, George Hay at Cornell Law School, told AP News.
But before that, Google still has another hearing to undergo in September, during which decisions will be made on the final penalties(处罚) to be enforced, such as requiring Google to share data with competitors or even breaking up the company. If the latter happens, products such as Chrome would be affected, pointed out The Economic Times.
Why did the US Department of Justice sue Google
A. For not paying enough taxes.
B. For not protecting user privacy.
C. For not observing US antitrust laws.
D. For not providing good customer service.
What does the underlined word "ubiquitous" in paragraph 6 most probably mean
A. Unique.
B. Widespread.
C. Uncontrollable.
D. Annoying.
Which of the following best reflects Kent Walker's view on Google's dominance
A. It was a result of luck.
B. It was due to customer support.
C. It was achieved through unfair competition.
D. It was built on superior products and services.
Which of the following is a possible final penalty Google could face according to the text
A.Being broken up.
B. Sharing its data with advertisers.
C. Closing down its online search market.
D. Paying for the losses of its competitors.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published, it's vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript(原稿). 36 No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.
I keep two reference books close-by on my desk: dictionary and thesaurus(同义词词典). I don't trust my laptop's spellchecker. 37 Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I'm old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers. I use the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Collins Thesaurus.
38 It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced.
In addition, I have an old two-volume copy of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, picked up a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just 99 pence. Of course, with its 2,672 pages, it's not exactly short. It contains around 163,000 words, plus word combinations and idiomatic phrases. 39 However, if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there's nothing better.
For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755. “To make dictionaries is dull(乏味)work," wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of “dull”. 40 A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience.
A. I don't often use this dictionary.
B. It takes no account of the context.
C. But I still don't want to replace them.
D. But a dictionary can be a pleasure to read.
E. Of course, a dictionary is not only for spelling.
F. That means good grammar and no spelling mistakes.
G. Dictionaries don't always give you enough information.

Training was brutal, as Penny Lee Dean prepared for what would be a record-setting swim-regardless of sex-across the English Channel in 1978. "Your hands cramp, your legs cramp," she remembers.
While the cold was bone-chilling, 41 it has been essential to her success as a record-breaking swimmer. An ability to tolerate extreme 42 is one of the advantages that women may have in this sport, as their distribution of fat is 43 for regulating body temperature in cold water.
Dean believes that any upper hand women might have in open-water swimming over long 44 is more about mental 45 and the ability to withstand discomfort than about insulation(阻隔). In ultradistance 46 ,the ability to juggle more factors, from weather to pain, becomes particularly important.
In fact, women can outperform or perform 47 to men in a range of competitive events. From ultrarunning to shooting sports, in some competitions women have the 48 .
Cassio Rippel, the ISSF Athletes Committee Chair, says that while men's muscles 49 give them more endurance, women's lower body mass and lower centre of 50 , on average, allow them better equilibrium(平衡)control. The rifle events are the most sex-balanced of the three types of shooting events in the Olympics, according to Rippel.
The Paris Olympics are the first Olympics to have equal numbers of female 51 . This is also an opportunity to take stock of what gaps in 52 still remain. While much of the science of sex and performance may be 53 , one thing that's crystal clear is that more research needs to involve women.

Despite keeping a low profile at the annual Farnborough International Airshow last week, the Chinese planemaker Comac still managed to dominate conversation among the 30,000 56 (day) attendees.
Comac (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China) could easily have funded a multi-floor complex to match its rivals, but made do with a utilitarian, modestly sized structure on the periphery (外围, 周边) of the show.
A team 57 about 20 people instead held catch-up meetings with suppliers to the C919, the 180-seat narrow-body plane with which it is seeking to take on the Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320neo.
Airbus praised China's efforts in bringing the C919 to market, but was also blunt (直截了当的) in listing its shortcomings.
Christian Scherer, 58 heads its jetliner arm (部门), said in a briefing that Comac was already a "serious competitor", but not 59 that was capable of taking on Airbus in the technology stakes.
Boeing 60 (see) as particularly vulnerable as it battles to overcome the 737 Max crisis following a near-disaster involving an Alaska Airlines plane in January.
Airbus is in the grip of (受制于) its own 61 (produce) squeeze, with supply chain issues 62 (hold) back assembly of the A320neo, while a long order backlog makes it tough to offer delivery slots to prospective customers this side of 2030.
63 third manufacturer capable of building a jet at a fair price and on time would provide a boost to airlines while Airbus and Boeing struggle.
Johan Lundgren, the chief executive of easyJet, said it would be positive for the industry "if there were more suppliers to choose from".
The low-cost airline has orders stretching out to 2034—so, 64 other Western carriers (航空公司), it would likely view a more refined successor to the C919 with an established safety record as a 65 (realistic) purchase option.

On a cold, snowy evening, Jack was at the corner shop, with his sole focus on the Marvel(漫威) superhero figurines(小雕像). Since then, he had diligently walked a neighbor's dog and weeded his neighbors' gardens to earn money for one figurine. Finally, he had enough money for one and raced towards the corner shop. Lost in excitement, he accidentally tripped over a homeless old man seated against a wall in the cold, quickly murmuring an apology before continuing on his way.
Inside the shop, Jack glanced at the shelves displaying Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and other beloved heroes. His heart raced as he reached for the Spiderman.
“You're a fan, right ” a friendly voice appeared behind him. Jack turned to see the shopkeeper, an elderly man with a warm smile. “Yes, they're amazing!” Jack said. “They're strong, and they help so many people. They have super power. I wish I could be a superhero too.”
“You can be,” the shopkeeper encouraged.
Surprised, Jack asked, “But how I don't have any super power.”
Smiling softly, the shopkeeper bent down, placing his hands on Jack's arms. “Why would you need them ” he replied kindly. “See that woman over there She needs to take care of three children. However, she still actively helps the elderly in the community. And do you know Jimmy He is a firefighter who has saved countless lives. Being a hero isn't about super power; it's about what's in your heart.”
Locking eyes with Jack, the shopkeeper smiled. “You don't need super power to be a hero. It starts with your heart.”

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节 应用文写作(15分)
Good morning,everyone!
I'm honoured to have the chance to make a speech here.
Recently I've found some of our classmates often stay up late into the night to do their homework and go on studying in the classroom at noon, while in class they often fall asleep, failing to listen to the teachers' lectures.
As is known to all, attending classes is the most effective and important way for us students to take in knowledge. Without enough rest one can't concentrate on what the teachers say. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Only when we schedule our time properly for both our study and rest can we make great progress in our study and keep healthy as well.
That’s all. Thanks for listening.
第二节 读后续写(20分)
Hearing what the shopkeeper said, Jack was lost in thought. The shopkeeper's words echoed over and over again in his mind. “How can I be a superhero without super power ” he thought to himself, Suddenly, the scene of the homeless old man trembling in the cold flashed across his mind. Jack made a crucial decision that instead of buying a superhero figurine, he walked out of the shop with a large shopping bag full of stuff. Hurriedly, Jack ran back to look for the homeless old man.
With relief. Jack found the homeless old man still sitting against the wall. He knelt down beside the old man, offering him a warm smile. “I'm sorry for bumping into you earlier,” Jack said sincerely. “Can I get you something to eat or drink ” The old man looked up, surprised by Jack's kindness. With a grateful nod, he accepted Jack's offer. Just then, Jack realized that being a hero wasn't just about saving the world—it was about making someone's world a little brighter.
