When US teenager Jake Olson isn’t playing football or golf for his high school, he’s often offering inspiration through his new book about his own life.
These activities might be too much for the average 16- year- old to deal with, but Jake is blind. When people ask him how he can possibly play golf without being able to see the ball, he says he is thankful for his father’s guidance.
It seems obvious that his early experience playing sports as a person with sight and muscle memory— repeating behaviors over and over until they become second nature— has also enabled Jake to hit the ball quite well.
Jake was born with a rare kind of eye cancer that took away the vision from his left eye when he was a small baby and finally his right eye, in 2009, when he was 12 years old. Rather than letting the disease. hold him back, Jake used his loss of sight and his faith as sources of motivation(动力).
“If I was going to sit on the couch all day feeling sorry for myself, I wasn’t going to do anything. I decided right then and there that I wasn’t going to let it stop me and that I was going to go out and persevere(坚持不懈),” he said.
It was with that state of mind that the student from Orange Lutheran High School in California was able to write his first book, Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life. “It’s about opening the readers’ eyes to their true potential(潜力)in life and making sure that they use all the abilities that they have,” Jake said.
Jake’s father, Brian Olson, said the family is impressed with what he has done with his life, including showing people that they can get through hardships. “Your darkest hour can soon become your brightest, and with every setback , there’s a setup(安排),” Jake said. “In every one of us, there’s more potential than we can ever imagine, and it really is a choice.”

The biggest challenge faced by travelers, especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady(稳定的)supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.
The easy to take washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while he was planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag’s design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.
Not surprisingly, the bag which was worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a disadvantage of his invention— dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.
In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two or three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged(按摩揉洗)for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What’s even more amazing is that with a capacity(容量)to hold 13 liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.
The best part is that the 99- dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it’s not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!
28.What led Ash Newland to create the Scrubba Wash Pack
A.His job requirements. B.His career as a lawyer.
C His interest in invention. D.His personal experience.
29.Why wasn’t Ash Newland satisfied with his former invention
A.Clothes couldn’t be washed well. B.An extra bag was required for dirty clothes.
C.The bag was not beautiful and fashionable. D.The cost of invention was high.
30.It can be inferred that the improved Scrubba Wash Pack ________.
A.turns out to be not environmentally friendly
B.will replace the traditional washing machine
C.will be widely used by more travelers in the future
D can encourage all people to travel a long distance
31.Which of the following is the best title
A.The Biggest Challenge of a Traveler
B.A New Washing Bag for Hikers
C.How Clothes Are Washed During a Hike
D.The Washing Machine: A Thing of The Past

Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Coromon Sense Media report published Monday.
While the decline(降低)over the past 10 years is sharp for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many children’s lives, and suggests how parents might help encourage more reading.
According to the report’s key findings, “the proportion(比例)who say they ‘hardly ever’ read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13- year- olds and 9 percent of 17- year- olds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent in that order today.”
The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, aged 2-8, remain largely the same. But the amount of time spent in reading each session(期间)has declined, from closer to an hour or more to closer to a half hour per session.
When it comes to technology and reading, the report does little to counsel(建议)parents looking for data about the effect of e- readers and tablets on reading. It does point out that many parents still limit electronic reading, mainly due to concerns about increased screen time, which negatively affects the eyes.
The most hopeful data shared in the report shows clear evidence of parents serving as examples and important guides for their kids when it comes to reading. Data shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to infrequent readers, have more books in the home, more books bought for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read.
As the end of school approaches, and school vacation reading lists loom(逼近)ahead, parents might take this chance to step in and make their own summer reading list and plan a family trip to the library or bookstore.
32.What is the Common Sense Media report probably about
A.Children’s reading habits. B.Quality of children’s books.
C.Children’s after- class activities. D.Parent- child relationships.
33.Where can you find the data that best supports “children are reading a lot less for fun”
A.In Paragraph 2.B.In Paragraph 3.C.In Paragraph 4.D.In Paragraph 5.
34.Why do many parents limit electronic reading
A.E- books are of poor quality. B.It could be a waste of time.
C.It may harm children’s eyes. D.It contributes to addictive behaviour.
35.How should parents encourage their children to read more
A.Act as role models for them. B.Ask them to write book reports.
C.Set up reading groups for them. D.Talk with their reading class teachers.

17-20W: Grace Murray was born in New York City in 1906.In an era when girls were expected to play house. Grace loved climbing trees, hiking, sailing, and reading. She also played basketball, hockey, and water polo, none of which was a typical activity for girls. Grace had a dollhouse, but she was more interested in building toy furniture for it than in playing with dolls. Grace’s parents encouraged her curiosity. When Grace was 8, her father became ill and bad to have both legs cut off. He never complained. Grace’s father worried that he might not always be able to provide for his daughters. He encouraged them to go to college and envision careers. Grace started to study math and physics at Vassar College, then went to graduate school at Yale. With a PhD in mathematics, the little girl who’d spent her days repairing clocks would become one of the greatest computer minds of her generation. Grace loved to teach. Before her years in the navy, she was a math professor at Vassar College. Grace won many awards. In 1991, she was the first individual woman to get the National Medal of Technology, the highest achievement in that field. In 2016, she was honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
