PAUL HEMINGTON, 57, is the Assistant Operations Manager at Cheddar Gorge(切达峡谷) and Caves.
I moved to SOMERSET mainly for my family. My daughter was getting married and I didn't want to live six hours away, so we made the move. Once we moved, we were made unneeded and it was a mad race to get work. I ended up getting a job here at Cheddar Gorge and Caves.
Cheddar Gorge is like nothing else in the UK. It's a unique phenomenon, because although there are other caves in the country, you don't have the gorge elsewhere. This is a major geological feature, it's three miles long and there's just this natural, raw beauty. I can sit at my desk in guest services and look out at part of the gorge. It's amazing.
The Cheddar Gorge spirit is strong. You know, not having worked here or heard about the area, you come here and it gets under your skin in the right way. You become part of it, it becomes part of you. I'm crazy about it. And there's the amazing wildlife, the geology, the prehistory — Cheddar Man is still one of the greatest finds in the UK. Every day at Cheddar Gorge and Caves is different. You've got the rock sports side of things, the climbing, the caving. We take people through the caves on tours and we have pre- history, which we do with the museum, whereby we have schools come in and do demonstrations with them. We will dress up as genuinely as we can to reproduce the time period of the Cheddar Man, which is the Mesolithic (中石器时代) period, so 10,000 years ago. We do fire lighting, for example, and hopefully it's inspiring to the young people! It's really cool to be in the museum garden and have part of the gorge as the background while you' re doing it, so you can really immerse (沉浸) yourself in that moment.
My favourite spot is when you go past the peak on the walk and you can look back down into the gorge. The view is amazing. Yes, you can see pictures of it, but honestly you have to be there to fully appreciate it. You might hear some eagles or see some sheep or goats while you're up there, just to enrich the experience!
4. PAUL HEMINGTON originally moved to Cheddar Gorge to ______.
A. settle down in the countryside B. land a job as a tour guide
C. be closer to his daughter D. take part in a competitive race
5. The underlined phrase "gets under your skin" is closest in meaning to ______.
A. bothers you greatly B. affects you deeply
C. increases your strength D. improves your skin condition
6. Which of the following falls into Paul's job descriptions
A. He goes to the school to give lectures on pre- history.
B. He demonstrates to young people how to climb rocks.
C. He decorates the museum to make it look like the gorge.
D. He participates in recreating the scenes in the Mesolithic period.
7. What does PAUL HEMINGTON talk about in this article
A. How he adapts to the local way of life.
B. What makes Cheddar Gorge so special to him.
C. What major local attractions are worth seeing.
D. Why Cheddar Gorge ranks first as a natural wonder.

One day, there'll be no need for you to brush your teeth by hand. Instead, a group of billions of nanoparticles(纳米粒子) could automatically do all that work for you. It would be especially life-changing for people who find it difficult or impossible to hold and move a toothbrush.
Steager, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia and Hyun Koo, an inventor and dental researcher there, found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lot like the ones an a toothbrush. But these bristles shape-shift to fit whatever surface they encounter.
The tooth- cleaning robot works thanks to two magnets (磁铁). One goes each side of the teeth. The nanoparticles sit in a liquid between the magnets. When the magnets are turned off, the nanoparticles move randomly in the liquid. As soon as one magnet gets turned on, the nanoparticles gather together near its center. When the researchers turn on the other magnet and turn off the first one, the nanoparticles extend outward in long, skinny bristles. When there's a tooth in the way, these bristles can't stretch out as far as they want. So they push against the tooth's surface. If there's a gap between teeth, they push into the gap. Moving the magnets makes the bristles move against and between teeth. All that motion cleans the teeth. As a bonus, the nanoparticles also have strong power to kill viruses.
The new device is just a proof of concept. The researchers still need to turn it into a product that people will want to use. "There's a lot of engineering to get from here to there, but every good idea needs to have a start." says Steager.
8. What is special about the tooth cleaner
A. It's water- resistant. B. It looks like a toothbrush.
C. It's appearance- changeable. D. It contains skinny bristles.
9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The bristles' formation. B. The working principle.
C. The virus-killing process. D. The magnets' motion.
10. How does Steager feel about the future of the device
A. Uncertain. B. Unfavorable. C. Concerned. D. Positive.
11. Which of the following would be the best title
A. A Shape-Shifting Robotic Tooth Cleaner
B. Magnetic Nanoparticles for Tooth Growth
C. A New Concept for Automatic Health Care
D. An Antibacteria Liquid Tooth cleaner for Adults

Tie an Italian's hands behind his back and he'll be speechless, which is an old joke in the US. However, Susan Goldin-Meadowin, author of the book Thinking With Your Hands, has a rather different view.
"Almost everyone gestures, not just Italians," she laughs. "Conference interpreters gesture in their little rooms, though no one is looking at them. Even people born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. In the TV series, The Crown, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may reveal her real emotions, which could be dangerous and that they have to be tied together so she can learn to speak without gesturing."
The gesture under discussion here is the so- called "co- speech gesture". It is much more abstract (抽象) than such symbolic gestures like a finger over the lips for "Silence!" or raising a finger to mean "Great!". Like words, such symbolic gestures are fuxed within cultures (but vary between them). Instead, co-speech gestures that accompany speech are another channel of information and emotion. For example, experimental subjects are asked to watch a film in which a cat runs, but they are told to lie and say it jumped. They may do so in words — while their hands will make a running movement. The co- speech gesture is not sign languages, either. They have clearly defined words and grammar and differ from place to place just as spoken ones do.
And the co- speech gestures have great potential for practical applications. For example, teachers are encouraged both to use gestures themselves and to observe those their students make. Some students who fail at a tricky mathematics problem may gesture in a way that nd cates they are on the edge of getting it; they should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are entirely at sea.
"Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at or around birth are likely to catch up verbally by the age of about 30 months, if they gesture as much as their peers. Those who gesture less are more likely to need early intervention," Susan Goldin- Meadow in adds. "Co-speech gesturing is not just about a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is an aid to both."
12. What does Susan Goldin-Meadowin really want to tell us in paragraph 2
A. Lady Diana is probably an emotional woman.
B. Italians are very talkative and gesture too much.
C. It is unnatural for the blind to gesture to each other.
D. Co-speech gestures are used by all of us unknowingly.
13. What can we say about sign languages
A. They are as abstract as co- speech gestures.
B. They are usually learned by human beings naturally.
C. They have distinctly structured words and grammar.
D. They vary from culture to culture and person to person.
14. What does the author suggest teachers do in the passage
A. Put enough trust in students.
B. Encourage students to tell the truth.
C. Observe the co- speech gestures carefully.
D. Teach as many tricky problems as possible.
15. What is the main idea of this passage
A. Co- speech gestures play a vital part in communication.
B. Symbolic gestures differ greatly from co- speech gestures.
C. Co-speech gestures are more difficult than sign languages.
D. Symbolic gestures have great potential for practical applications.

Nowadays, many people tend to use comparisons as a force to beat themselves up. This is especially true for women. They are targets of industries which depend on women being unhappy with themselves in some way, such as the fashion industry. In fact, negative comparisons are impacting mental and physical health. 16
Find your model 17 However, you can choose who you're comparing yourself to. Build a tight circle of friends and family, people who you admire and trust and who you know want you to be the best version of yourself.
18

Meanwhile, please remember not all comparisons are a bad idea. 20 For example, positive, healthy comparison can be a useful way to find inspiration and set paring your past to your current state may also cast light on the ways you've grown or remind you of meaningful things you may have lost sight of.
