1. Learn new words and phrases
- Take out the word cards of the new words and phrases one by one. For example, show the card “amazing” and say:
- T: Look at this word “amazing”. It means something that makes you feel surprised and impressed. Can you think of something that is amazing
- Ss: Magic shows are amazing. / The Great Wall is amazing. (Students may give different answers based on their own experiences.)
- Then show the card “widely” and say: “This is ‘widely’. It means something is spread or used in a large area or by many people. For example, English is widely used around the world. Can you say a sentence using ‘widely’ ”
- Ss: Mobile phones are widely used in our daily lives.
- Use pictures and simple examples to teach other new words and phrases. For “vocabulary”, show a picture of a thick dictionary and say: “This dictionary contains a lot of words. The words we use in a language are called its vocabulary. English has a very rich vocabulary.” For “expression”, show a picture of a person with different facial expressions and say: “These are expressions on the person's face. In English, we also have different expressions to say the same thing. For example, ‘I'm happy’ and ‘I'm glad’ are different expressions with the same meaning.” And so on.
- After teaching the words and phrases, play a word matching game. The teacher shows the word cards on one side of the classroom and the corresponding pictures or examples on the other side. Ask students to come to the front and match the words with the correct items. This game helps students to reinforce the understanding of the new words and their meanings.
- Then, put the new words and phrases into a short passage about the importance of learning English and read it aloud. The passage could be like this: “Learning English is very important. 2. Text learning
- Open the textbook to the page of “Amazing English” and show the pictures and charts related to the text on the multimedia.
- T: Look at these pictures and charts. They show us some amazing facts about English. Now let's read the text and find out more.
- Play the tape of the text for the first time and ask students to listen carefully and just listen, not to read.
- After listening, ask some questions to check their understanding of the general idea of the text, such as:
- Why is English said to be widely used around the world (Because it is the language of international business, science, technology, and more. People from different countries use it to communicate.)
- What does the text say about the vocabulary of English (It has a large and rich vocabulary. There are often different expressions for the same thing.)
- In what fields is English used (It is used in many fields, such as technology, culture, travel, etc.)
- Play the tape again and ask students to follow the tape and read the text silently. While reading, they should pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation, and try to understand the details of the text.
- Then, ask some students to read the text aloud paragraph by paragraph. The teacher corrects their pronunciation and intonation if necessary.
- Explain the key sentences and difficult points in the text. For example:
- “English is widely used around the world.” Explain the meaning of “widely” and emphasize the global importance of English. Give some more examples of how English is used in different countries and situations, such as in international conferences, on the Internet, and in global trade.
