[2024河南中考]"Oh, boys, don't throw stones at the poor bird," said an old grey-headed man.
"Sir," said a little one, "she makes such a loud noise that we can't bear her."
"I am afraid the stone will rebound(反弹) and hurt you as long as you live!"
"Rebound! We don't understand you, sir!"
"Well, I will tell you a true story.
"Fifty years ago, I liked throwing stones because I had no other boy to play with and I became very skillful. One day I went to work for an old couple who were very friendly to everybody, even to the birds. And the birds seemed to love the old couple too. For seven years a bird had come and built her nest(鸟巢) in the same place. She and her mate had just returned on the day I went to work and the old couple welcomed them happily. During the day, I thought I would try my skill upon her. Suddenly the bird flew to a tree near me. I found a nice stone, and I threw it with my best skill. It hit the bird on the head and she dropped dead!
I was sorry the moment I saw her fall off the tree. But it was too late. All day long her mate flew about, and chirped(发啁啾声) so sadly that he made my heart ache. I said nothing to the old couple but one of their grandchildren told them about it. Though the old couple never said a word to me, I knew that they were very sad. I could never look them in the eye and tell them how sorry I was. They have been dead for many, many years, and so has the poor bird. But don't you see how that stone rebounded, and hit me For fifty years I have still remembered it though I have never spoken of it before. But if what I have told you stops you, I will be happy."

跨学科[2024南京秦淮钟英中学期中]Parrots have been known to mimic communication(交流). The sounds they make may sound meaningless to us, but a new study has found that wild parrots are given names by their parents.
According to a study led by Karl Berg of Cornell University in the US, nestlings(雏鸟) are given a special sound of their own, which stays with them for their whole lives. In the study, the team put cameras in the nests of 17 different wild parrots. After studying their sounds, the team knew the differences in the calls parents used to communicate with each nestling. And even before the nestlings had learned to communicate, the baby birds seemed to mimic their calls.
Sounds very similar(相似) to humans, doesn't it
The study also tells that these calls are got socially(在社会上), not genetically(基因上地). To do this, scientists exchanged the eggs in nine of the 17 nests, so that half of the parrots were raising nestlings that weren't theirs. The scientists found the nestlings all used names similar to those the parents (whether biological or non-biological) called them for the first week of their lives.
Lucie McNeil, from National Geographic, said, "This would be the first example of a non-human species teaching acoustical(声学的) communication." Lead scientist for the study, Karl Berg, told National Public Radio of the US, "Most people say, ‘Well, all those calls are just noise.’ But I think they're communicating."
Fox News also asked Berg what else the parrots might be saying. He answered, "It is that these birds are deciding where the food is — ‘Do we want to go 3km North-Northwest ' ‘Do we want to go to that field ’ They are arguing(争论) or discussing."
Natural science author, Virginia Morell, wrote, "Slowly, scientists get to know the communications of very different animals."
You never know, if the science of animals' sounds keeps going, we may one day watch a real TV programme about parrots.
1 The underlined word "meaningless" in the first paragraph means " ".
A. meaningful B. useful
C. unimportant D. helpful
2 What did the new study find about wild parrots
A. They can talk by learning from people.
B. The sounds they make are meaningless.
C. They have names given by their parents.
D. They have a unique way of making sounds.
3 What does the study suggest
A. Different parrots are called differently by their parents.
B. Baby parrots can tell who their biological
parents are.
C. Baby parrots can mimic their biological parents' calls better.
D. Parrots are the cleverest animals in communication.
4 Why did the scientists exchange the eggs in the study
A. To see whether the parents could recognize(认出) their own babies.
B. To see whether the parrots made the same sounds all their lives.
C. To see whether the calls were got socially or genetically.
D. To see whether biological and non-biological parents named babies differently.

The main characteristic(特征) of a bird is feathers. No other animal has feathers. Other important features of birds are wings and hollow bones.
Birds fly by flapping their wings and using air pressure(压力) to create lift under their wings, just like airplanes do. The peregrine falcon(游隼) is one of the fastest birds. It can reach speeds of over 100 miles per hour when diving. Feathers are important to birds because they keep them warm, help them to fly, and provide camouflage(伪装). Hollow bones also help in flying because they help make the bird light enough to fly.
Although an important characteristic of birds is flying, not all birds fly. Some birds that don't fly are penguins, kiwis and ostriches. Penguins actually spend much time in the water where they are good swimmers. Ostriches on the other hand are very fast runners. An ostrich can outrun a horse!
There are all sizes of birds. Hummingbirds(蜂鸟) are some of the smallest birds, while ostriches are some of the biggest. Different types of birds eat different things. Some birds feed on plants, some birds eat insects and still others eat other animals like fish, snakes, mice or rats. Birds are also known for their migrating(迁徙) patterns in large groups. Some birds will travel far each season to stay in a climate that suits them. A bird is sometimes kept as a pet. The most popular birds for pets are tropical(热带的) birds like parrots. Birds also have a history of helping out humans in different tasks. They can carry messages (homing pigeons) and help hunt (falcons).

An ostrich can run as fast as 43 miles per hour and grow as tall as 9 feet.
