Well, your questions have taken me back to the past and inspired me to reflect on my current work.
I became interested in plants when I was about six years old. I grew up in Hubei Province in central China, which is well-known for medicinal plants. My grandfather was a local herbal doctor, and had much knowledge about plant diversity. He went to the mountains to pick plants, and I helped him. So I’ve always had that appreciation for green diversity.
But because I was his granddaughter, I was not allowed to inherit his medicinal knowledge — he was supposed to pass that knowledge on to his son or his grandson. But I was guided and attracted by the plant diversity I saw every day in the forests. In college, I was studying forestry, and a professor would take us on field trips. In the mountains near my college, there must be 300 species of trees. So I asked him, “How can these plants come together in this place so well ” He looked at me, saying, “That’s a good question. You can devote yourself to studying that question.” That was the moment when I knew I wanted to be a plant biologist.
So today I’m a plant biologist who’s focused on studying plant diversity. Now I work on describing new species — I’m working on describing a new ginseng (人参) species from Thailand and have also begun to describe a new grape species from Yunnan Province in southwest China.
I am a lucky scientist. Plants hybridize (杂交) like crazy in the wild. These kinds of processes, without proper tools, are impossible to figure out. Now we actually have various advanced tools to test our hypotheses (假设), to understand the patterns and the processes of plant evolution.
Some people may think my work is boring. But for me, it’s not. We’re trying to understand how humans can benefit from this vast plant diversity. Our science can teach us to conserve that plant diversity, so it can benefit not only us, but future generations. Also, our research encourages the new generation to carry on the torch.
24. What made the author decide to be a plant biologist
A. Her early school life. B. Her grandfather’s guidance.
C. A teacher’s encouragement. D. A wonderful childhood adventure.
25. Why does the author consider herself a lucky scientist
A. She is good at hybridizing various plants.
B. She has lots of opportunities to work in labs.
C. She is allowed to propose hypotheses in public.
D. She has many good tools to study plant evolution.
26. How does the author find her work
A. Boring. B. Simple.
C. Impractical. D. Meaningful.
27. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A journal entry. B. An interview.
C. A biography. D. A science report.

In a study in Australia a seven-week cooking class was found to significantly improve mental health and well-being, physical health markers, confidence and life satisfaction — as well as the ability to change eating habits.
The story of the decline in physical and mental health in the Western world is well-known. An emphasis on work and study leads to the consumption of less nutritious food, which has exploded in availability as the decades have advanced. 67% of all Australians are overweight or obese, a figure which is nearly applicable to the American population.
An international team of researchers aimed to investigate if a course of seven 90-minutecooking classes could improve health outcomes by restoring confidence in people’s ability to cook for themselves at home.
“The 90-minute hands-on cooking session used a new recipe each week to support learning of skills and knowledge about nutritious foods, to enable increased cooking confidence, skill development and food literacy knowledge. In addition, participants were taught knife-handling skills and were given tips and advice about healthy options for how to boost flavor and create dishes using fresh foods to replace pre-prepared ingredients. Food-budget planning, kitchen economy and reduction of food waste were also covered,” the study reads.
Six months after the classes, the participants, 32% of whom had scores for physical health, mental health, and subjective vitality lower than the national average, all reported significant improvements.
A limitation of the study, the researchers note, could be that as the class was a group activity, it was simply the result of doing something constructive together with other people that resulted in the benefits.
However, as the improvements in mental and physical well-being were observed months after the classes concluded, one can suppose it’s due more to cooking knowledge gained during the seven-week cooking session and perhaps more time with family and friends over cooked meals.
28. What does the author try to do in the second paragraph
A. Lead in a new topic for discussion. B. Offer examples for a conclusion.
C. Add some background information. D. Give some useful advice to readers.
29. What were the participants required to do during the cooking sessions
A. Interact actively with group members. B. Replace fresh foods with processed ones.
C. Gain the knowledge about nutritious foods. D. Grow fresh vegetables in their own gardens.
30. What happened to the participants after taking the cooking classes
A. Their general health greatly improved. B. They grew apart from their family.
C. They saved a lot of money on cooking. D. Their subjective vitality became lower.
31. What is the author’s opinion on the seven-week cooking class
A. It has little to do with people’s health. B. It is too short to bring pleasant results.
C. It influences the participants temporarily. D. It benefits the participants in some way.
D
Five years ago, French navy officer Jér me Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska. Chardon understood how treacherous the journey would be, as heavy storms frequently hit Pacific island communities. Yet, somehow, bar-tailed godwits routinely pass through the area uninjured. Chardon wondered whether learning how birds traveled could help coastal communities avoid natural disasters.
This past January, a team from France’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) began experiments designed to test Chardon’s idea. Researchers with a project led by Frédéric Jiguet from NMNH equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting-edge animal tracking technology. The team members were ferried to remote islands in French Polynesia, where they attached tags (标签) using tracking technology. These tags sent the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which bounced the data back to scientists on Earth who could then follow the birds — waiting to see how the birds responded to natural disasters.
The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear infrasound, the low-frequency sound humans cannot hear but that the researchers believe is the most likely signal birds would use to sense storms and tsunamis (海啸). In a 2014 study, scientists tracking a kind of golden-winged birds in the central and southeastern America found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to escape from an outbreak of tornadoes (龙卷风) that killed 35 people. The birds fled at least 24 hours before any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists to believe that they had heard the storm system from more than 400 kilometers away.
The team plans on tagging hundreds more birds across the Pacific to prepare for a potential tsunami. “I think if there’s one wave that spreads across islands, we can get data from different species at different locations,” says Jiguet. “That will say it’s worth continuing to tag and to develop local systems to better analyze this. There are chances that we will develop a bird-based tsunami early warning system.”
32. Which of the following best explains the word “treacherous” underlined in paragraph 1
A. Strange. B. Amazing. C. Dangerous. D. Frequent.
33. What is the function of the tags
A. Tracking natural disasters. B. Distinguishing bird species.
C. Reporting the birds’ situations. D. Guiding researchers to islands.
34. Why is the 2014 study mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To prove an assumption. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To present a new topic. D. To make comparisons.
35. What might be the best title for the text
A. How Can Birds Avoid Natural Disasters
B. Can Birds Warn Us of Natural Disasters
C. How Does a Warning System Function
D. Can Birds Play a Role in Human Research

I didn’t see the thin plastic tape running across the bread bag when I put the bread in my shopping cart or when I checked out. It wasn’t until I unpacked the bread at home that I realized that I’d broken the rules again.
That stupid plastic tape joined the long list of mistakes I made in just one week of trying to eat plastic-free. Last month, I challenged myself to purchase a week’s worth of food without bringing home any plastic. That meant no yogurt containers or plastic packages.
I chose a budget of $115 (roughly half-way between the average weekly grocery bill for a family of two in Massachusetts). On Saturday afternoon, I pulled into the parking lot of a well-known zero-waste shopping center.
I started in the produce section, where I typically got a plastic bag of organic baby carrots. This time, I could not go there because every vegetable in the organic section was packed in plastic containers. But I found some beautiful carrots among the non-organic produce. Then I saw the plastic price labels hanging off their rubber bands. I rolled my cart past the green beans and grapes, all inside the plastic. I weighed loose apples, onions and sweet potatoes. My anxiety kicked in — a feeling that I wouldn’t have enough. So, I bought a head of cabbage.
I tapped prices into the calculator on my phone. Leaving the produce section, I was in good shape, at $32. It was time to search for protein.
I headed to the meat counter. Again, everything was prepackaged in plastic. But the man behind the glass kindly agreed to put some chicken and meat, separately, in paper bags. Together they were $21.
Tofu, cheese, yogurt and pretty much everything in the dairy section were prepackaged in plastic. Even the bottled milk had a plastic cap. But there were lots of eggs in those paper bags.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At checkout, I still had $62 left but I could not find anything else without plastic.

【答案】 At checkout, I still had $62 left but I could not find anything else without plastic. So I became a little bit angry and complained to the manager that there were too many things I couldn’t buy plastic-free. There was no dairy or juice. He said he’s interested in using more recyclable containers, but they were much more expensive. He also told me that it’s hard to add that cost to the price of food, and that paper bags for nuts, beans or snacks weren’t as attractive on shelves as plastic bags.
At the moment, I realized that perhaps I shouldn’t have had aimed too high. After all, most customers had to shop with their eyes on their wallets. The major plastic producers could not be closed down immediately. Thus, I decided to just reduce the plastic that I used once and threw away. Anyway, I was happy that I avoided using 27 plastic containers in the week. Maybe I could do better.
