(Text 1)
M: Hi, Amy. The music festival begins this month on the 28th and tickets go on sale on the 6th. Are you interested
W: Sure. The organizer will come to our school four days after the sale starts. I’d like to get more information from him before I buy tickets.
(Text 2)
M: I should have stayed at home last night.
W: Why That was an exciting movie, and what a joyful ending!
M: You call that joyful I have a completely opposite view.
(Text 3)
M: How much is the fuel bill please
W: That’s 20.50 please.
M: Thank you. By the way, do you sell newspapers
W: Yes, over there next to the magazines.
(Text 4)
M: Sarah, I’ve finished the book on Egyptian writing you lent me. Its details inspired me for our history project.
W: Great, Alex! We could also use photos from the museum’s Egyptian exhibit for it. I’m going there this Saturday.
M: Count me in! Let’s meet at the cafe tomorrow to plan.
(Text 5)
W: I heard you had great fun during the winter holiday.
M: Yeah, we stayed by a lake so there was the chance to go skating. My performance was pretty awful.
W: But you were only a beginner. It takes time to make progress.
(Text 6)
M: As this is your first visit here, I’ll show you around.
W: Thank you, sir.
M: As you can see, shelves are clearly classified according to subjects. Most books you may take home with you but some, such as foreign language dictionaries over there behind the computers must be used here.
W: OK. I know.
M: It’s best if you take them to the desks by the window and study them there. ⑦And you can use these armchairs near the door if you’d like to take a break.
(Text 7)
W: So how did you like the new sports center
M: Well, there’s a wide choice of things to do … ⑧It’s just that their advertisements said “something to suit all the family”. I wish they had water games for the under-fives. There was nothing really suitable for them. But you can learn to windsurf or sail, and you have the freedom to go anywhere in the lake …
W: ⑨Isn’t that a bit dangerous
M: ⑨Not really. Nobody’s allowed in the water without a life jacket, and a rescue boat is on hand all the time.
(Text 8)
W: May I help you, Sir
M: Yes. ⑩I want to sell a bookshelf, and I’d like to put an advertisement in the newspaper, please.
W: OK. What’s your name, please
M: Bill Martyn.
W: OK. Then you can pay the advertisement bill through online banking.
M: That’s great. I don’t bring much cash with me.
W: OK. We’ll charge you for the advertisement by the inch, not by the word. So, using short words might save you some money.
M: Oh, that’s a good idea. I have everything written out here, but I’ll just check it over before I give it to you. Maybe I can use some shorter words, too.
W: OK. You can use that table over there. Just bring it back to me when you are ready.
(Text 9)
W: Charles, can you give us some advice about improving our ability to memorize
M: Yes! Try to visualize an image that is connected to the thing you need to remember. For example, you can use several images to remember a list of ingredients for a recipe.
W: Yes, that makes sense.
M: Singing can help with memorization too. It is one of the earliest memory tricks that are used for learning new concepts. I used to “sing” lists of historical facts and dates. It works.
W: And did you have to sing aloud in your history exams
M: Not aloud! But I did use to sing in my head. And I always got good marks for history.
W: Any more tips, Charles
M: Yes! I’ve saved the best one till last. It’s particularly relevant for any students who have tuned in. Teach whatever it is that you want to remember. So, if you’re studying for an English exam, teach the concepts to someone else. It really works because in order to teach something you need to digest it first.
W: Thank you, Charles. Now, I think we’ve got time for a couple of questions from our listeners.
(Text 10)
W: Thanks for inviting me tonight. As you know, my main interest is in conservation and I’m lucky enough to work with lots of different wildlife organizations.
I’d been fascinated by all kinds of bears, but it was the Spectacled Bear that really attracted me. Its name comes from the yellowish fur around the bear’s eyes like glasses. It’s the only survivor of a type of bear that once ranged across America during the last Ice Age. We thought that it was only found in certain places in Venezuela and Chile, but some reports suggest there might be a very small number of the bears also living in northern parts of Argentina and eastern Panama. Their habitats can range from dry coastal deserts to high mountain areas above 4,000 meters. It’s been estimated that there are only about 2,400 Spectacled Bears still around. The bears are endangered not so much because they are hunted by other animals, but what I find really sad is the fact that humans destroy their habitats.
The bears are primarily vegetarian. On rare occasions though they eat honey, which I thought was just something in children’s books. It’s quite surprising that although they rarely eat meat they have extremely strong jaws and wide, flat teeth.
We’re really trying to make people more aware of the bears. I hope everyone will support our efforts to help these fascinating creatures!

Super awkward, I turned around and wanted to drive my Batmobile away. At the sight of my strange behavior, the laughter from these kids faded away all of a sudden. “Is Batman escaping ” asked a child, his voice filled with genuine concern. I found myself rooted to the ground, unable to inch forward. Some awful memories flashed back in front of my eyes, making me feel my blood freeze. My heart was beating painfully fast, and my mind went totally blank. Another child broke the ice by yelling from the top of his lungs, “Batman never escapes!” It was his inspiring words that brought me back to reality, and I eventually gathered up my courage to do what Batman would do.
I ran into the party, and they were all clapping their hands for me. Unaffected by my previous move, the birthday boy jumped for joy and threw himself into my arms. I failed to contain my feelings, excitement written all over my face. It struck me that I was the only one bothered by me and my mustache. Feeling on top of the world, I cracked a smile at these little angels and opened my mouth, “Batman’s here! Who wants to fight against bad guys with me ” “Me!” they replied in chorus, and a trace of joy can be noticed in their voices, for which my long-lost confidence found its way back. Cape blowing in the wind, tears welling up in my eyes, I got rid of insecurity and self-doubt lingering in my heart and resolved to stay positive in the face of adversity.
