At Cambridge, rather than choosing a hall of residence or dormitory, you live in a Cambridge College. There are 29 undergraduate Colleges. Each College has its own services, facilities and community.
Applying for accommodation
You don’t need to apply for accommodation separately. If you’re offered a place to study, you will automatically get a room in College accommodation for your first year.
Accommodation is guaranteed for 3 or 4 years for international students. This accommodation will be in College-owned property. Typically, you won’t have to pay 12 months of rent per year. Our accommodation contracts are around 27 to 39 weeks.
Cost of accommodation
Accommodation costs vary from College to College. They also usually depend on the size of your room. Your accommodation costs will usually cover:
water, electricity and heating
cleaning
internet access
basic self-catering (自助膳食) facilities
Where you will live
During term time, you will need to live within a 3-mile radius (半径) of Cambridge city centre. You can live outside of this area if you get permission from your College or if you’re studying abroad as part of your course. If you think you’ll need to live outside of the 3-mile radius, you should contact a College to talk about your options before you apply.

Growing up as a kid in the UK, I was fascinated by insects. Wanting to protect them, I started building houses for ants, using little pieces of wood and leaves. I then moved on to making little cups and saucers from silver foil (箔纸) for the magical creatures. When seeing my work, my mother told me that the smaller I made things, the bigger my name would become.
As the years went by, my designs became more complicated. Making sculptures isn’t actually enjoyable. I sometimes work for 16 hours a day without breaks, and it takes me up to three months to finish a sculpture. I have to hold my breath during the sculpting process.
One time, a fly landed on a Cinderella carriage sculpture I was working on. The fly’s wings blew it away, and it was lost. I was heartbroken. Another time, I accidentally breathed in a microscopic Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Alice is now in the Wonderland forever. But it did give me the chance to make an even better one the second time around.
My sculptures have taken me to incredible places. In 2012, I met the queen, giving her a crown on the head of a pin. In 2013, I received my first Guinness World Record for creating the smallest sculpture by hand, a 24-carat gold motorbike that fitted inside a hair. In 2017, I beat my record with a sculpture of a human fetus (胎儿) that measured 0.078 mm by 0.053 mm.
I was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) as an adult. In school, my teachers had pointed me out as an example of failure; now, I see my autism as a gift. It’s pushed me to be the best I can be. I hold workshops in schools for neurodiverse children, sharing my story and helping them create their own miniature figures.
The microscopic world has always been my happy place. I’ve tried to make bigger sculptures, but small is best for me. We need to appreciate the little things in life. Small things can also be mighty, too.
24. What drove the author to make tiny sculpture at the beginning
A. His interest in insects. B. His desire to make a name.
C. His dream of setting a record. D. His awareness of wildlife protection.
25. Which of the following can best describe the author’s sculpting process
A. Eventful and enjoyable. B.Complex and frustrating.
C. Money-wasting but entertaining. D. Time-consuming but fulfilling.
26. How does the author deal with his autism now
A. He receives medical treatment.
B. He takes full advantage of it.
C. He regards it as the source of failure.
D. He shares it and asks help from others.
27. What message does the author mainly convey through the text
A. Great art comes at a cost of loss.
B. Childhood experiences sculpt a career.
C. Minor things in life can carry weight.
D. Hard work contributes to great achievements.

There’s a useful concept from psychology that helps explain why good people do things that harm the environment: the false consensus effect. That’s where we overvalue how acceptable and prevalent (普遍的) our own behavior is in society. Put simply, if you’re doing something (even if you secretly know you probably shouldn’t), you’re more likely to think plenty of other people do it too. What’s more, you likely overestimate how much other people think that behavior is broadly OK.
This bias(偏见) allows people to justify socially unacceptable or illegal behaviors. Researchers have observed the false consensus effect in drug use and illegal hunting. More recently, conservationists are beginning to reveal how this effect contributes to environmental damage.
In Australia, people who admitted to poaching (偷猎) thought it was much more prevalent in society than it really was, and had higher estimates than fishers who obeyed the law. They also believed others viewed poaching as socially acceptable; however, in reality, more than 90% of fishers held the opposite view. The false consensus effect has also shown up in studies examining support for nuclear energy and offshore wind farms.
Just as concepts from psychology can help explain some forms of environmental damage, so too can they help address it. For example, research shows people are more likely to litter in areas where there’s already a-lot of trash scattered around; so making sure the ground around a bin is not covered in rubbish may help.
Factual information on how other people think and behave can be very powerful. Energy companies have substantially reduced energy consumption simply by showing people how their electricity use compares to their neighbors. Encouragingly, stimulating people’s natural desire for status has also been successful in getting people to “go green to be seen”, or to publicly buy eco-friendly products.
As the research evidence shows, social norms can be a powerful force in encouraging and popularizing environmentally friendly behaviors. Perhaps you can do your bit by sharing this article!
28. Which example best illustrates the false consensus effect
A. A student spends long hours surfing the internet.
B. A blogger assumes many people dislike his posts.
C. A driver frequently parks illegally in public places.
D. A smoker believes people generally approve of smoking.
29. How did most Australian fishers view the issue of poaching
A. It is unacceptable. B. It is widespread.
C. It is controversial. D. It is complex.
30. What do the underlined words “go green to be seen” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Embrace green habits for better health.
B. Make green choices that others can perceive.
C. Join green movements for personal fulfillment.
D. Choose green items that are easy to spot in stores.
31. What is a recommended approach to addressing environmental problems
A. Understate social norms.
B. Highlight personal responsibilities.
C. Publicize sustainable practices.
D. Encourage technological innovations.

There have been concerns that video games might damage our mental and physical well-being. Recently, more researches have revealed these worries are largely unfounded. Nevertheless, there exists a deep-seated idea that playing them rots your brain — it’s easy to view them as an unproductive waste of time. But in reality, is the opposite the case
For years, “brain-training” games and apps have been convinced to be an effective way to boost our cognitive (认知的) abilities or intelligence, as it’s thought that by playing a series of quickfire puzzles focusing on things like memory or spatial awareness, over time our abilities in these areas will improve; theoretically, so will our general intelligence.
From a research viewpoint, the key lies in whether playing these sorts of games results in “transfer” effects — “near” and “far” transfer effects: near effects relate to whether playing one memory game results in improvements in other memory games, whereas far effects relate to whether playing that game results in a general improvement in cognitive abilities. Some studies have pointed out brain-training games show weak near effects. As for far effects, there’s no convincing evidence this happens.
However, things get interesting when brain-training games are compared with video games. In a 2015 study comparing the brain-training game SmartP with the video game Mazix, researchers found SmartP players didn’t show boosts in problem-solving and spatial skills, but Mazix players did.
More recently, in 2020, researchers in Sweden studied data from some 9,000 children and found that kids aged 9 or 10 who played video games for above-average amounts of time didn’t show any differences in intelligence compared with those playing less. Two years later, they discovered that by 12, the kids playing video games had 2.5 more IQ points than average.
Why video games result in improvements in cognitive abilities over more targeted games isn’t clear. One argument is to do with the amount of time invested: whereas brain-training apps tend to deliver mini-games over a short time, video games have players engaged and require sustained levels of attention and problem-solving. Despite some promising findings, it’s currently unsafe to say that video games make us smarter. Meanwhile, video games can offer both advantages and risks, so it’s important to be cautious and avoid making quick judgments.
32. What do people usually think of brain-training games
A. They are a waste of time.
B. They can improve our intelligence.
C. They are easily accessible.
D. They may enhance our concentration.
33. What do we know about Mazix players
A. They demonstrated signs of far effects.
B. They had a great talent for video games.
C. They exhibited boosts in gaming skills.
D. They proved the importance of near effects.
34. What does the study in 2020 reveal
A. The limited effects of age on IQ points.
B. The negative impacts of video games.
C. The advantages of playing more games.
D. The benefits of video games over time.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Do Brain-training Games Really Work
B. Video Games or Brain-training Games
C. Could Video Games Make Us Smarter
D. Should We Stop Playing Video Games

We live in an interruption-based culture that can be damaging to productivity. Most of the time, information from electronic devices only adds to the distraction. Here are some tips to help you increase your focus and complete the things that count:
36 Write down what you want to finish each day and identify a single priority that you commit yourself to complete This will help focus your brain on what matters, dealing with the big jobs first and leaving the small ones till later.
Turn off the distractions. Actively checking for information may distract you from work. Consider checking email only four times per day and handling each inquiry only once. Try to control your devices, instead of having that technology control you. 37
Get comfortable. 38 Comfort could be determined by the clothes, the chair, the music, the temperature of the room or the work location. Knowing what environment makes you comfortable yet focused at the same time can help you maintain focus through the workday.
Set smaller goals. Big goals may be great for motivational speeches. 39 Consider breaking down all goals into smaller pieces that can be finished more easily. As a result, this may only require focus for a shorter period of time, which may mean an increased possibility of completing the task.

There was a girl in my class named Krista. Krista didn’t like me. In fact, I thought she hated me. I was always the smallest in the class and maybe that made me easy to pick on. She would say, “Little girl, no one likes you, little girl!” She even punched me in the arm and I cried a lot in the bathroom. Finally one day, I decided to face the bullying (霸凌) . So right as the bell was about to ring, I went up to Krista, kicked her in the leg, and then ran as fast as I could. I was safe with the teacher in the classroom, but Krista beamed an evil look and said, “Be scared. I’ll get you later.”
I worked hard at avoiding her the rest of the year. I remembered telling my mom about it, and she comforted me by saying “Nobody can tell you how little you are—you decide how big you will be.” I really liked that saying.
I would say it in my head often and find strength in these words. But the thought of Krista’s bullying didn’t die in my mind.
One day, I received a letter about my coming-of-age ceremony, the biggest day of my youth. Then I read who my partner would be. KRISTA. How could this be She was the source of all my anxiety and insecurity and yet this day was supposed to show my strength, pride, and wisdom.
When the day came, Krista and I both acted civil. I could tell she wasn’t pleased either. When I read my speech, I read loudly and confidently. I had practiced long and hard. I saw my friends and family smiling at me, and I focused just on them.
Then it was Krista’s turn. She was shaking. I was shocked at how nervous and scared the bully seemed. I suddenly felt something that I never imagined feeling toward Krista—sympathy. I had always dreamed of the day I could laugh in her face and make her feel as little as she made me feel. But now, I didn’t want to do it anymore.

读后续写:【参考例文】
I sat down next to the crying girl after the ceremony, as her hands remained over her eyes. I couldn’t help putting my hand on her shoulder and told her that everything would be fine. She murmured, “I always envy you having so many friends and supportive family.” Despite the hurtful things she had done to me, I realized that she might also have her own struggles. She could barely look me in the eye, and then she whispered, “Thank you. I was never nice to you… I’m sorry.”
I smiled and gave her my forgiveness. Though her words caught me off guard, I could see the guilt and sincerity in her eyes. It was a moment of realization for both of us, as we began to see each other in a different light. I told her what my mom had told me the year before, “Nobody can tell you how little you are-you decide how big you will be.” Hopefully, those words would give her the strength that they gave to me. I truly believe I became an adult that day.
