Use modal verbs to talk about how sure or unsure you are about something that happened in the past.
Lee
Peter
Wow, that sounds so cool! Did you tell Susan the good news
I went to her house at lunchtime yesterday to tell her about it, but she was not at home. She could go out for some food.
I’m pretty sure she was able to go out and get some food. What do you mean by that
I mean it’s possible that she went out for some food at that time.
Oh, you mean she could have gone out for some food
Yes, you’re right!
Hey bro! I heard that you’re about to come back to China tomorrow for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Yeah, I’ll be a volunteer in Beijing and I hope I can meet my favorite athletes there.
Peter was confused when Lee said “she could go out for some food”.
“She could go out for some food”
= She had the ability to go out for some food.
“She could have gone out for some food”
