Growing up, Maitri Wadher, a left-hander, has struggled to cope in a world made for right-handed people. From school desks to spiral notebooks that stop the natural flow of writing, Maitri has faced tough challenges from a young age. “My mother used to tie my left hand and make me eat with my right until a doctor warned that this could significantly affect my growth and confidence,” Maitri says.
This childhood experience had gnawed (折磨) at the back of her mind, pushing her to do something to ease the lives of fellow left-handers. In September 2018, she started The Left Out Store, which makes everyday products ranging from left-handed writing tools and scissors to kitchen tools for left-handed people.
Starting The Left Out Store wasn’t in the cards for Maitri for a very long time. The idea for The Left Out Store came to Maitri in just 20 minutes during a festival at St. Joseph’s Institute of Management, where she was a post-graduate student. She presented the rough idea to judges who later became sponsors, and they enthusiastically supported it. This encouragement gave her the push to make it a market research project to test the waters and explore the potential market.
Initially, Maitri faced a few hiccups. It took her quite some time to find vendors (小贩) and make them understand how to make the products. With everything in place, Maitri went through a tough time reaching customers. The first time she made a proper sale was at an exhibition at Lalit Ashok. “People were surprised at first, but gradually more left-handed people began approaching me, and said they relate to my struggles.” Since then, she has been regularly marketing her products at exhibitions, and keeps The Left Out Store active on social media.
24. What challenge did Maitri face as a left-hander while growing up
A. Unfair judgement. B. Lack of parents’ love.
C. Limited access to education. D. Struggle with school tools.
25. How did Maitri turn her idea into a reality
A. By seeking student sponsors. B. By conducting market research.
C. By expanding the potential market. D. By carrying out her long-thought plan.
26. What does the underlined word “hiccups” probably mean
A. Barriers. B. Threats C. Complaints. D. Oppositions.
27. What might be a suitable title for the passage
A. A Left-Hander’s Struggles B. Maitri’s Marketing Strategies
C. Maitri: A Social Media Celebrity D. The Left Out Store: Maitri’s Journey
C
As a senior resident, I often distributed poems to my team, printing and posting them above the computers in our hospital workrooms. Once, during a rare quiet moment in the ICU, with permission from my colleagues (同事), I read a couple of poems out loud. I remember watching my colleagues’ eyes close and their bodies visibly relax as the words washed over them.
Since then, I have shared poems — my own and others’ — in talks at my institution and across the country. I’ve also led other healthcare providers in creative writing exercises during workshops, lectures and classes. Many institutions host book clubs, story slams, film screenings and other opportunities for medical learners to engage with the humanities (人文学科).
While poetry can be frightening to some, many contemporary poems provide approachable emotional experiences. Pieces like Safiya Sinclair’s “Notes on the State of Virginia” fully illustrate how a place that seems innocent or even beautiful to some can be upsetting to others. Monica Sok’s “ABC for Refugees” powerfully paints a portrait of a young child caught between languages and cultures — a reality that many pediatric (儿科的) patients face. “Ode to Small Towns” by Tyree Daye overturn s common assumptions about rural life. In “Medical History”, Nicole Sealey shares a patient’s perspective (视角) on a part of health care that, for many of my students and colleagues, has been reduced to a series of check boxes on a computer screen. These and other poems provide fertile ground for enhanced understanding of the human condition, as well as inspiration for a clinician’s own potentially transformative reflective writing.
The possibilities for cooperation between literature and medicine are wide open. I believe all clinicians have a role in recognizing and dealing with how everyone has been shaped by an unreasonable society. The history, sociopolitical context, imaginative perspective and reflective practices the humanities offer may improve the practice of medicine. Through understanding others’ experiences and reflecting critically on their own, every clinician can move closer to being the kind of healer they intend to be.
28. Why did the author like to share poems at work
A. To cure his patients. B. To bring in the humanities.
C. To make his colleagues amazed. D. To practice for a competition.
29. Whose poem may change people’s beliefs about the countryside
A. Tyree Daye’s. B. Monica Sok’s.
C. Safiya Sinclair’s. D. Nicole Sealey’s.
30. What does Nicole Sealey’s work seem to imply
A. It’s urgent to upgrade the medical equipment.
B. Doctors should have better medical skills.
C. There’s room for improvement in medical care.
D. A patient can be treated from different perspectives.
31. Which statement does the author probably agree with
A. The humanities help make a better doctor.
B. The clinicians are to shape our future society.
C. Doctors must learn from each other’s experiences.
D. Reflective writing greatly benefits a doctor’s skills.
D
The ban on cigarette advertising in the early 1970s in the United States serves as a fascinating case study in the field of public health campaigns and their unintended consequences. Despite the government’s intention to discourage smoking and reduce related health risks, the ban led to an unexpected outcome: an increase in cigarette sales for the major tobacco companies.
The reason for this unexpected outcome can be traced to the principles of game theory, particularly the prisoner’s dilemma paradox (悖论). Just as in the prisoner’s dilemma, where cooperation leads to the best outcome for both parties, the tobacco companies would benefit collectively if none of them advertised. This action would create fairness in competition, ensuring that no individual company gains an edge by advertising.
However, the dilemma arises when considering the potential actions of competitors. If one tobacco company decides to ignore the ban and advertise its products, it stands to gain a significant market share and increased sales compared to its non-advertising competitors. This creates a situation where each company faces the urge to advertise, fearing that their competitors may do the same and leave them at a disadvantage.
In the end most tobacco companies decided to play it safe and invested in advertising, despite the ban, to avoid being left behind in the competitive landscape. This strategic decision reflects the uncertainty and strategic considerations that shape business decisions, even in the face of regulations aimed at public health goals.
This application of game theory provides valuable insight into the complexities of influencing human behavior through policy interventions. While well-intended efforts such as advertising bans may seem straightforward in theory, the realities of strategic decision-making and competitive dynamics often lead to unforeseen outcomes. As such, understanding the complexities of game theory can provide valuable insight for policymakers seeking to design more effective interventions and address complex societal challenges.
32. What is a direct result of the ban in the 1970s
A. Cut in tax income. B. Reduction in health risks.
C. Rise in tobacco sales. D. Cooperation of companies.
33. How can all competitors benefit in the prisoner’s dilemma
A. They fully trust each other and follow the regulations.
B. They act independently and pursue their own interests.
C. They increase their market share at the expense of others.
D. They ignore competition and focus on their own strategies.
34. Why do most tobacco companies finally choose to advertise
A. To avoid intense competition. B. To gain a competitive advantage.
C. To shape better business images. D. To achieve public health goals.
35. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A A Good Intention Fails. B. A Cigarette Ban Ends in Smoke.
C. A Ban Boosts Public Health. D. A Dilemma Concems Cigarette Compames.

When I was in middle school my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show ” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two The talent show for the food bank ” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

【答案】 A Symbol of China
Among the many symbols representing China and its unique culture, the Great Wall is top on my recommendation list.
The Great Wall is one of the greatest miracles created by the ancient Chinese as the witness of China’s long history. Originally built by Emperor Qinshihuang and expanded and strengthened in the Ming Dynasty, it became the world’s largest military structure. And its historic and strategic importance is matched only by its architectural significance, making it a symbol of the unity and strength of the Chinese people.
The Great Wall is now the biggest tourist attraction in China. As the old saying goes, “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man”. So come and experience it at first hand.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house.

【答案】I was completely knocked out by the news. What should I do Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up. Feeling at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution, when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my mum, who looked at me with care and concern. “You have prepared for it enough. You can do it by yourself.” She said after my stumbled explanation. I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and warmness swelled up in my heart. Yes, I could do it myself.
Finally came the big moment. Looking around the audience, I stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness was gone with the wind. Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day. I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care. It turned out to be a good performance, which helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person.
