①Mary was awakened in the night by the sound of rain beating with heavy drops against her window. It was pouring down and the wind was rushing round the corners and in the chimneys of the huge old house. Mary sat up in bed and felt angry.
②She had been awake turning from side to side for about an hour, when suddenly something made her sit up in bed and turned her head toward the door listening. “It isn't the wind, now,” she whispered. “It is different . It is that crying I heard before.”
③The door of her room was open half and the sound came down the corridor( 走 廊 ). She wondered what it was. Then, she took up a candle and went softly out of the room. Sometimes, families can be hard. They argue( 争 吵 ) a lot. Things get said. People get upset. Sometimes they stop talking. Our family has had lots of ups and downs. I’d say arguments often happen in our family, too.
I have an older brother and an older sister. I’m the baby boy in the family. We grew up in quite a small house and often didn’t have a lot of money. My mum and dad argued, pretty much all the time, just about anything. My brother and sister argued. And I used to argue too.
But as I got older, I always chose to be the mediator(调停者). I would try to look at both sides
of the argument and bring them together to make peace. “Dad, you shouldn’t have said that to Mum, but Mum, try to see it this way.” “Come on guys, we all love each other. It’s just been a bad day.” I’d say it often worked.
I learned much growing up in our family: understanding, being patient and the knowledge that sometimes things just don’t go your way. We all make mistakes. We all say things that we wish we hadn’t. The key is to try and understand. Of course, sometimes, arguments do need to happen. If something is wrong, it needs to be solved and sometimes, we get angry about it. But if we can reflect( 反映) and look at things with an attitude ( 态度) of care and responsibility( 责任), we can weather the storm and help each other out.
What do we know about the writer’s family
A.Two of the kids in the family are girls. B.The writer is the youngest in the family. C.The writer never argues with his parents. D.His parents get along well with each other.
As a mediator, what did the writer often do
A.Started a conversation angrily. B.Did nothing to help but watch. C.Helped one side to fight the other. D.Tried to get agreement with each other.
What did the writer learn from his family
A.Knowledge is useless in communication. B.A family shouldn’t share feelings with each other. C.Arguing is always bad and should never happen.D.A family should understand and care for each other.
What does the underlined phrase “weather the storm” mean
A.To deal with a difficult situation successfully. B.To ask somebody for help when in trouble. C.To tell exactly what the weather will be like. D.To learn how to keep cool during a storm.
Which of the following shows the structure of the passage
B. C. D.
D
An invasive species (入侵物种) of ant, called “big-headed ant,” is changing the way lions hunt and eat in Kenya, according to a new study. The ants spread because of human activities like trade and travel. They arrived in Kenya from southern Africa about 15 years ago. Since then they have kept killing the local acacia(合欢树) ant.
Acacia ants live in and take care of the thorn( 荆 棘 ) trees in Kenya. In a “symbiotic
relationship”, acacia ants get food from the trees and use them for home. In return, they protect the trees from animals like elephants or giraffes, which might eat too much of the trees. Acacia ants do this through attacking(攻击) these animals in group.
However, big-headed ants eat acacia ants and their eggs. As a result, the number of acacia ants is falling. What’s more, big-headed ants don’t protect thorn trees either. So with fewer acacia ants to save them, the trees are in trouble.
Professor Palmer’s team found that in areas with big-headed ants, elephants destroyed (破坏) more trees. This means the place is more open and zebras can easily find lions following them. So lions kill much fewer zebras in these areas than in tree-filled places.
The good news is that the number of the lions remains unchanged because the lions turn to hunt buffalo(水牛) for food instead of zebras. This probably means that the tiny ants have caused lions to change their habits too. They have to hunt the bigger, heavier buffalo. Professor Palmer said, “We often find it’s the little things that rule the world.”
Big-headed ants .
A.come from southern Kenya B.feed on whistling thorn trees C.spread because of humans D.attack elephants and giraffes 62.Picture best shows the underlined words “symbiotic relationship”.

Known as “soft gold”, gambiered Canton gauze (香云纱) is the best silk fabric (布料) for qi
pao. It feels smooth and comfortable, easy to wash and dry, and is also good for people’s health.
Gambiered Canton gauze is the only silk fabric that’s still hand-dyed using natural plants in the world today. It gets its color from a yam ( 薯 蓣 ) plant with the name of Shuliang . It can help fight against bacteria(细菌) and bad smells.
The skill of dyeing( 染 色 ) gambiered Cantongauze has a history of more than 500 years. In 2008, it was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家非物质文化遗产).
A master’s story
Ouyang Yongze is an inheritor( 继承人) of the dyeing skill of gambiered Canton gauze . The 50-year-old began learning the skill in 2017. “There are 30 steps through the whole dyeing and all should be done by hand with natural materials. Yam, river mud(泥), sunshine, and meadows (草地) are of great importance in the dyeing,” Ouyang told Teens.
To dye the fabric, workers put it in yam juice and then let it dry on the grass. They do this many times until it turns brownish-yellow. Then, they put river mud on it to help the yam react fully. After washing and drying again, the fabric turns black!
Mastering(掌握) the dyeing skill is difficult. Ouyang had to try many times before he could get the right density of yam juice. “Too much may cause color loss, and too little may not lead to a dark enough fabric,” he said.
Passing on the craft is also challenging. It can be tiring to work under the sun for eight hours a day. Only a few people work in that line of work, and the skilled masters are getting older.
In light of this, Ouyang has worked hard to tie in other dyeing skills such as tie-dye and batikc (蜡染). He has also worked with famous designers to make both traditional clothes from gambiered Canton gauze. He believes all these can make the traditional skill alive and get more young people to learn the skill.
