Tatiana Erukhimova, a physics professor at Texas A&M University, performs physics tricks with endless energy and enthusiasm. Videos of her theatrical demonstrations have received hundreds of millions of views across TikTok and other social media platforms.
In those videos, Erukhimova uses everyday objects in her experiments, from pingpong balls and toilet paper to bicycle wheels and hair dryers. Her YouTube page has about 2.5 million subscribers, a huge following overshadowing even the famous Aggie athletics program.
Erukhimova knows how to get young people excited about a hard science. But it wasn’t always that easy. When she first started teaching college freshmen two decades ago, she struggled to grab their attention. It took her a while to find her strong Russian accent, which was once regarded as a barrier to connecting with her students, but has now endeared (使受欢迎) her to both students and fans online.
“The key is to make myself approachable and my instruction personal,” she says, “Walk up and down the stairs while teaching rather than stay on the stage. Don’t just lecture, talk to them—make it interactive. And, of course, add showy demonstrations.” she says, “These demonstrations often help students to connect these abstract concepts with real life.”
Growing up surrounded by physics, Erukhimova went on to get her Ph. D. in applied physics at the Russian Academy of Sciences. Two years after joining Texas A&M as a postdoctoral researcher in 2001, she jumped at the first opportunity to teach. As a leader in a STEM field where women are underrepresented, Erukhimova’s become a role model for some. She led a 2021 study that broke the stereotype(刻板印象) that men outperform women in physics courses.
Grigory Rogachev, head of Physics department, says, “Erukhimova’s outreach work has helped bring visibility to the department, which has translated to a boost in donations and physics major applicants. She’s a performer in addition to being a scientist. And that is rare in the community.”
24. Why did the author mention Aggie athletics program
A. To show the variety of Erukhimova’s classes.
B. To prove the success of Erukhimova’s videos.
C. To reveal the sudden increase of Erukhimova’s following.
D. To display the rich contents of Erukhimova’s YoutTube page.
25. What happened when Erukhimova taught college freshmen for the first time
A. Everything got along well. B. They were inspired by her classes.
C. She failed to draw their attention. D. She enjoyed their affection for her accent.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Erukhimova
A. Energetic and strict. B. Serious and enthusiastic.
C. Honest and attractive. D. Creative and easy-going.
27. What does Grigory Rogachev think of Erukhimova’s outreach work
A. It has led to a decrease in donation.
B. It has inspired many girls to major in physics.
C. It has helped people break the stereotype of women scientists.
D. It has made a positive influence on improving physics community.
C
Between 1945 and 2000, educators employed a fairly uniform approach. The teacher was the sun in the classroom, and all lessons and activities centered around him or her. Educators stressed the importance of discipline and obedience(服从) within the classroom, and students were expected to follow very rigid standards for behavior and academic performance. The stated goal of this model was to ensure fairness by applying the same expectations; however, the result was that only a few students succeeded while many others were left behind.
When computers and Internet technology entered the classroom a few decades ago, another pattern appeared and progressive educators immediately saw the opportunity to change the way school worked. Instead of needing to focus on the teachers for the vast majority of the day, students could use computers, websites, and even games to learn new materials and improve their skills and knowledge. Not all educators welcomed this shift, however, as some believed it took power and responsibility away from the teachers and cheapened the educational experience for learners.
Over the last decade, two distinct camps of educators have emerged. Tech advocates stress that computers and Internet technology allow students to learn at their own pace in an environment that makes them feel comfortable, while the traditional classroom sets a pace that many learners can’t keep up with and often makes students feel uncomfortable. Traditionalists, on the other hand, believe that over-reliance on tech limits students’ ability to develop their own knowledge and skills and does little to prepare them for the realities of being adults in the real world.
Regrettably, the inability of these two parties to find an agreement has prevented the growth of our education system. We must learn from what worked in the past while adopting the best of our new technologies to create an education system that reflects our modern world. If we can’t get all our teachers on the same page, then we will be at risk of failing future generations.
28. Who can probably learn better under the 1945-2000 model of education
A. Lisa who tends to read by herself.
B. Michael who disciplines himself.
C. Kate who can focus on listening for long.
D. Tom who prefers hands-on learning.
29. Why do some educators prefer the second education pattern
A. It allows for different learning styles.
B. It has the same hope for students.
C. It fires students’ enthusiasm for learning.
D. It reduces teachers’ level of stress.
30. What message is conveyed in paragraph 3
A. Two of a trade never agree. B. Everyone thinks in his way.
C. Every potter praises his pot. D. One’s words reflect one’s thinking.
31. What is the author’s understanding of a good education system
A. It’s full of well-trained subject teachers.
B. It’s an accurate mirror of the real world.
C. It’s inclusive and accessible to all students.
D. It’s an integration of tradition and modernity.
D
Scientists are poor forecasters of the future. But two trends can be confidently predicted. First, the world will get more crowded. There will be more than 9 billion people by 2050. Second, the world will get warmer and some governments won’t prioritize the long-term measures needed to deal with climate change, even though science offers us a road-map to a low-carbon future.
That’s why we should be promoters of new technology — without it the world can’t provide the food and sustainable energy needed for an expanding population. But we should also be cautious, as new technologies, such as AI, may be hard to control. AI will undoubtedly become more aggressive in the future. Records of our movements, health and financial transactions will be stored in the cloud. The data may be used for justifiable reasons, such as protein folding and drug development, or to warn us of initial health risks, but its availability to Internet companies is already shifting the balance of power from governments to global-scale corporations.
Actually, it’s beyond Earth that AI has the most enormous potential. Humans may have established bases beyond Earth by the year 2100. But don’t ever expect mass emigration(移民) from Earth. It’s a false belief that space offers an escape from our problems. Dealing with climate change on Earth is a piece of cake compared to terraforming(地球化) Mars.
Nevertheless, we should cheer on these brave human space adventurers. They’ll be ill-adapted to a Martian habitat, so they’ll have a super motive to redesign themselves. It’s they, not those of us adapted to life on Earth, who will pioneer the post-human era(时代).
If post-humans make the shift from flesh and blood to fully artificial intelligence, they won’t need an atmosphere of even gravity, so it’s in deep space — not even on Mars that non biological “brains” may develop powers that we can’t imagine. They may end up being mentally different from us. AI could jump-start a huge emigration and thus even more complex intelligence spreads through the universe.
But let’s refocus from the science fiction of the far future closer to the here and now. This century is special. It’s the first, in Earth’s 4.5-billion-year history where one species — ours — holds the planet’s future in its hands.
Our intelligence could initiate billions of years of post-human evolution(演化), even more amazing than that which led to us. On the other hand, humans could cause biological, environmental or cyber catastrophes that foreclose all this potential. If science is to save us, we need to think globally, sensibly and long-term — empowered by science, but guided by values that science alone can’t provide.
32. Why does the author mention the two trends in the first paragraph
A. To justify the governments’ policies.
B. To criticize scientists’ poor prediction ability.
C. To advocate for advancements in tech.
D. To highlight the challenges faced by scientists.
33. According to this passage, AI can ________.
A. put an end to climate change
B. facilitate mass human migration
C. speed up the competition in medical fields
D. bring about potential threats from big companies
34. As for the future, which of the following will the author agree with
A. Post-humans will echo the history of humans.
B. Complex intelligence will dominate the universe.
C. Non-biological brains may invite unknown disasters.
D. Fully artificial intelligence may inhabit outer space.
35. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. Future of Humanity: Could AI Save Us
B. Change or Die: Will Science Lead Further Evolution
C. Towards a Sustainable Future: What Can We Do
D. Unstoppable Trend: Is Complex Intelligence Coming

Jeremy is a boy who loves to lend a helping hand to his family. He spends quality time playing with his baby sister while his mother busies herself in the kitchen, cooking dinner. And after meals, he dutifully assists his father with drying the dishes. However, Jeremy’s favorite job is feeding Fletch, the family’s pet cat.
Fletch is a handsome cat, his fur a mix of brown and black, adorned with tiger stripes running across his back. When he’s hungry, Fletch has a unique way of communicating with Jeremy. He gently bumps his head against Jeremy’s legs, a silent reminder that it’s time for his meal.
One evening after dinner, Mom asked Jeremy to find Baby Suzy’s doll. “I think she might have dropped it in the backyard this afternoon,” she said worriedly. “She won’t be able to sleep without it. Can you take a look before it gets too dark ”
Without hesitation, Jeremy opened the back door and ran outside. The bright red doll stood out among the grass, making it easy for him to spot. Grabbing it, he ran back inside, relieved to have found it.
Later that night, as Jeremy prepared for bed, he remembered his usual routine. He always said goodnight to Fletch before turning off the light, but the cat was nowhere to be found. Jeremy searched the bathroom and hallway, but Fletch was missing. Worried, he went downstairs to go on his search.
He checked the living room and dining room, but still no sign of Fletch. As he reached the kitchen, Jeremy’s heart sank. Tears began to well up in his eyes. Mom, who was enjoying a cup of tea, looked up and noticed his worry. “Jeremy, you should be in bed by now! What’s wrong ” she asked, concern etched on her face.

M: You are watching the morning news. This is Steven Johnson. Sydney and the New South Wales coast have been hit by heavy rains. Major roads, the airport, trains and buses were all thrown behind schedule as more than a month’s worth of rain fell in just one hour during the morning rush. All traffic into Sydney remains very heavy. Pittwater Road is closed due to a car crash. Consider using Wicks Road instead. A police officer has been hurt assisting drivers in North Ryde. A woman is believed to have broken her leg after a tree fell on her car. The roof of Town Hall Station has fallen in, causing delays for passengers. The rain is expected to be at its heaviest from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. Today a total of up to 200 millimeters of rain is being forecast, along with damaging winds of more than 90 kilometers per hour, to fall. All road users are advised to reconsider the need to be on roads in such wild weather, and reschedule their day and continue on their journey after the rain stops.

What to Do in the Face of Difficulty
It’s known that we live in a world with various difficulties. Therefore, it’s natural for us to meet with difficulties in our growth. Faced with them, we should keep calm and have an optimistic attitude.
As for me, I once had difficulty in balancing my study and life. As a result, I failed in many exams of the first year. Luckily, I was not discouraged by this. Instead, I made a detailed time schedule with the help of teachers and carried out it strictly, which helped me make great progress in my study. Also I can successfully balance my life and study.
To deal with difficulties better, I think we should learn more knowledge and skills. Besides, we can regard challenges as opportunities to grow. Every challenge or difficulty we confront in life serves to strengthen our will, confidence and ability to conquer future obstacles.

“The back door is open!” Jeremy cried, uneasiness creeping into his voice. “And I can’t find Fletch anywhere!” “I think you’re right to be worried,” she said, her voice calm yet filled with sympathy. “Fletch may have slipped out through the open door.” “Fletch may slipped out the door.” Jeremy’s eyes welled up with tears. “Fletch ran away and it’s all my fault! I left the door open!” he sobbed. Mom wrapped her arms around Jeremy, offering comfort. They sat together until Jeremy stopped crying. “Cats are very smart,” Mom said gently. “Fletch will probably find his way home for breakfast.”
The next morning, Jeremy was awoken by a familiar sound — a loud “Meow.” He jumped out of bed and ran downstairs, his heart full of hope. He made his way straight to the back door and pushed it open wide. There, sitting calmly, was Fletch, licking his paw as he washed his face. Fletch looked at Jeremy and meowed. Then, without hesitation, he slipped inside and made his way to his food bowl. Jeremy’s heart filled with relief and joy. He gave Fletch an extra scoop of cat food. “Next time I’ll make sure I close the door nice and tight,” Jeremy promised, his voice filled with determination. “Meow,” Fletch replied, seemingly content and at peace.
