The past few years have been difficult for 13-year-old Adeola Abraham. In 2020, the teen was
diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, and he survived a successful bone marrow transplant (骨髓移
植) and rounds of chemotherapy (化疗). Thankfully, Adeola is now out of the hospital. During his
recovery, he found out that he had qualified for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ask for a dream
wish from Make-A-Wish Mississippi. While many teens would choose a memorable Disney trip,
meet a favorite figure or get a PlayStation, Abraham instead chose to feed the homeless in his local
community.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation is famous for brightening the lives of children suffering from
critical illnesses by meeting their wishes. A wish typically falls into three categories: a wish to have
something, go somewhere or meet someone. Abraham’s charitable wish to give came as a surprise to
the organization. Linda Sermons, a Make-A-Wish Mississippi representative, said that Abraham’s
generous wish was the first of its kind in the organization’s 35-year history. She was impressed with
the teen’s maturity and sense of sympathy.
Make-A-Wish Mississippi approved of the teen’s wish in a big way. They created a service
named after the teen, called Abraham’s Table, which would provide free meals to the homeless every
month for the next year. Local businesses generously donated food and supplies, and receivers
gathered in Jackson’s Poindexter Park for the meals. Abraham and his proud mom personally
attended and handed out the food. Abraham’s Table fed more than 80 people at its first event.
Abraham said it warmed his heart when the receivers came back to thank him for the meal he
provided.
Abraham now wants to inspire other teens to get more involved in local charities. He also wants
to continue his mission of helping others by starting his own nonprofit that helps those experiencing
food insecurity.
4.What made Abraham a remarkable boy
A.His exceptional choice for a dream wish. B.His great sufferings from a critical disease.
C.His special qualifications for a dream wish. D.His successful survival from a blood disorder.
5.What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A.Eighty people or so benefited from Abraharn’s Table.
B.Abraham’s act of kindness received positive reaction.
C.The organization provided financial help for the homeless.
D.The local businesses were greatly appreciated by the receivers.
6.According to the passage, which words can best describe Abraham
A.Energetic and determined. B.Mature and intelligent.
C.Sympathetic and selfless. D.Generous and cautious.
7.Which of the following can best describe the story

When put to tests, bees have long proved that they’ve got a lot more to offer than pollinating
(授粉 ), making honey and being loyal to a queen. The hard-working insects can change their
behavior when things seem difficult, and now some scientists find there is proof that they also like to
play.
Scientists from Queen Mary University of London performed an experiment, in which they set
up a container that allowed bees to travel from their nest to a feeding area. But along the way, the
bees could choose to pass through a separate section with some small wooden balls. Over 18 days,
the scientists watched as the bees “went out of their way to roll wooden balls repeatedly, despite no
apparent incentive (刺激) to do so.”
Earlier studies have shown that the black and yellow bugs are willing to learn new tricks in
exchange for food or other rewards. In this case, to get rid of external factors, scientists made sure
the bees had adapted to their new home and that their environment was stress-free.
The finding suggests that like humans, insects also interact with objects as a form of play. Also
similar to people, younger bees seem to be more playful than adult bees. “This research provides a
strong indication that insect minds are far more complicated than we imagine. There are lots of
animals who play just for the purpose of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals
and birds,” said Lars Chittka, a professor of sensory and behavioral ecology at Queen Mary
University of London, who led the study.
The study’s first author, Samadi Galpay, who is a PhD student at Queen Mary University of
London, states that it is more evident that bees may be capable of experiencing feelings. “They may
actually experience some kind of positive emotional states, even if basic, like other larger animals do.
This finding has effects on our understanding of the sense and welfare of insects, which,
consequently, encourages us to respect and protect wildlife on Earth ever more,” she says.
8.What is the new finding about bees
A.They are fond of having fun. B.They are faithful to the queen.
C.They are adaptable to changes D.They are skilled at rolling balls.
9.How did scientists remove external influences in the experiment
A.By teaching bees new tricks. B.By rewarding bees with food.
C.By making bees feel at home. D.By building new homes for bees.
10.What are Lars Chittka’s words mainly about
A.The forms of bees’ interaction. B.The complexity of bees’ minds.
C.The examples of mammals’ play. D.The purpose of mammals’ enjoyment.
11.What does Samadi Galpay say about the study result
A.It backs up prior understanding of insects.
B.It reveals reasons for bees’ positive feelings.
C.It drives research on animals’ emotional state.
D.It contributes to wildlife conservation on Earth.

An updated version of the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT was launched recently
by OpenAI. Its ability to write in an intelligent and human-like manner left users impressed and also
a little bit frightened. People have used ChatGPT to write entire blocks of code, television scripts,
and even complete academic essays — causing fears that students might use the bot to cheat their
way to an easy A.
But some college professors aren’t that concerned. While ChatGPT’s writing might seem
“quite good in an abstract way”, Professor Stuart Selber, who teaches English at Pennsylvania State
University, thinks it struggles to address local issues, produce an original argument, or challenge
other arguments rather than just citing (引用 ) them. These are all key aspects of effective essay
writing in his opinion. That’s why Selber doesn’t think essays written entirely by ChatGPT have any
hope of scoring high grades. ChatGPT won’t replace original writing, said Selber, but it might help
college students improve their work. Indeed, he thinks it might offer a shortcut for some of the more
difficult tasks of essay writing, like preparing a literature review.
Dr Leah Henrickson, a lecturer at the University of Leeds, thinks that, if used carefully, AI
might even make education fairer. He said: “I think there’s a lot of potential for it to help students
express themselves in ways that they hadn’t necessarily thought about. This could be particularly
useful for students who speak English as a second language, or for students who aren’t used to the
academic writing style.” AI tools like Grammarly, which analyzes and improves written sentences,
are already widely used by college students. In Henrickson’s view, ChatGPT is just the next step —
and these tools aren’t going away. “Our students know that these tools exist,” she said. “Our job is to
help them use them critically.”
According to Henrickson, the University of Leeds is already looking at revising its assessments
in reaction to the rise in AI. It hopes to focus more on critical analysis and judgement — a human
skill — rather than straightforward information, which a chatbot like ChatGPT can easily replicate.
12.What do people think of ChatGPT’s writing ability
A.It is real but overvalued.
B.It is impressive but frightening.
C.It is as good as that of humans.
D.It is based on ready-made building blocks.
13.In what way might ChatGPT be helpful for college students according to Selber
A.By writing an excellent essay for them.
B.By providing an original argument for them.
C.By helping them make a literature review.
D.By teaching them to develop abstract thinking
14.Why is Grammarly mentioned in the last but one paragraph
A.To compare it with ChatGPT.
B.To prove AI tools are here to stay.
C.To indicate its usefulness is beyond praise.

余选项。
As a high school student, you’re likely used to learning through reading textbooks. 16
This lies at the heart of “experiential (由经验得来的) appreciation”, a philosophy that encourages
you to engage directly with the world around you. It’s about learning from real-life experiences, and
discovering a more profound and engaging way to learn.
To practice experiential appreciation, you can start by getting involved in hands-on activities
related to your subjects. They will provide a firsthand understanding of the concepts you’re studying,
making learning active and meaningful. So, try joining a sports team, picking up a paintbrush, or
taking part in a local charity event. 17
As you dive deeper, immerse (沉浸 ) yourself fully in the surroundings and activities. When
you’re in nature, don’t just look around. 18 Touching the leaves, feeling the wind and
listening to the birds can enrich your learning and make each moment more memorable.
19 After trying something new, ask yourself what you learned and how it made you
feel. Write in a journal or discuss it with friends. This self-discovery turns experiences into life
lessons and offers a deeper understanding of the world.
Experiential appreciation transforms learning from a task to be completed into a journey to be
treasured. 20 So, explore the world around you, let every experience shape you, and
discover the endless possibilities that await. This is the core of true learning, where every moment is
a step towards a richer, more enlightened life.
A.Now consider expanding your learning from just reading to actively participating.
B.It extends learning far beyond textbooks.
C.Instead, activate your senses for a stronger tie with it.
D.Mind the impact of your actions on the environment.
E.Take your experiences further by reflecting on them.
F.Textbooks offer a systematic introduction to essential concepts and principles.
G.These activities bring learning to life.

George was a driver and he spent so much time at his work that he could hardly have a meal
together with his wife and three children. In the evenings he attended classes, seeking to get
knowledge that one day would help him to find a better paying job.
George’s family often complained that he was not spending enough time with them, but his
only answer was, “I am doing all this for you and I work hard to provide my family with the best that
I can.”
Soon after George had passed his exams, he received a good job offer with a salary, which was
significantly higher than he had before. So now George could provide his family with more
expensive clothes, some luxury items or vacations in foreign countries. It was like a dream come true,
but family still did not get enough attention from George, as he continued to work very hard and
often, he did not get to see his family for most of the week.
Time passed and George’s hard work paid off-he was promoted. He decided to relieve his wife
from domestic works, so he hired a maid. He also decided that their flat was not big enough for their
family and they needed a more spacious one. Thus he needed to work even harder and, moreover, he
continued his studies, so that he would be promoted again. George worked so hard that sometimes he
even had to spend his Sundays with his clients instead of his wife and children. And again, whenever
family asked for his time and complained that they did not spend enough time together, he answered
he was doing all this only for them.
A bit later George was promoted, and he could buy a spacious house with a beautiful view. On
the first Sunday evening at their new home, George told his wife and kids now he decided not to take

Hello, every one, today I would like to share with you the most unforgettable class in my mind.
As a matter of fact, a large number of wonderful classes have left a deep impression on me, while the one that touched me most was the class meeting on the first day of my senior high school, which was delivered by our head teacher. In the class, she expressed her sincere concern about our new life as well as introduced some practical learning methods, conveying her best wishes for us to get adapted and enjoy our boarding life. With her encouraging words buried in my heart, I dragged myself out of the confusion and fright, feeling confident in my new life.
As a result, whenever I recall the moment when I stepped into this school, this class will come into my mind, bringing sweet memory.

It seemed like George lost his body posing herself, the wife finally dialed 911. And soon George was rushed to hospital.
The day finally came when George recovered from his illness. He came to his wife and said, “How lucky I am to have you around me. I can’t imagine if something terrible really happened.” The wife smiled and gave him a hug, saying, “Our kids and I knew you tried your best to improve our life. If happiness and comfort are achieved at the cost of your health, how can we be happy ” George saw his wife’s tears streaming down from her cheeks, unable to speak a word anymore. He just wished to stay healthy and spend more time accompanying his family.
