When it comes to Albert Einstein (1879-1955), it's easy to imagine an old, crazy- haired genius. But before he ever came up with the theory of relativity, Einstein was a 23- year- old patent clerk, working for the minimum wage. Young Einstein decided to earn some extra cash tutoring physics. He put up an ad, and Maurice Solovine, a student of philosophy, responded. The two did not do much traditional studying, but instead chatted about philosophy. Conrad Habicht, a mathematician and a friend of Einstein, joined their debates. They jokingly called themselves the Olympia Academy.
We've gathered together some books the members of the Olympia Academy read and discussed. Maybe the literature that inspired Einstein can inspire you to be clever, too.
A Treatise of Human Nature by David Hume
David Hume, a 18th- century Scottish philosopher, was always suspicious. He believed “everything we know is really just a matter of probability”. He argued “reason doesn't motivate people”, which led to all sorts of questions, such as “So what's motivating you to write this ”
“The chief benefit, which results from philosophy, arises in an indirect manner, and more from its secret insensible influence, than from its immediate application,” Hume wrote.
Analysis of Sensations by Ernst Mach
An Austrian philosopher Ernst Mach wrote about how mysterious senses are. In an attempt to figure out how humans experience balance, Mach cleverly built a turning chairs , which used shades of gray bands to show that the colors people saw were deeply affected by the colors around them.
Science and Hypothesis by Henri Poincare
Henri Poincare, a 19th- century French philosopher, was also a theoretical physicist, an engineer and a mathematician. At college, he was fantastic at math. He created his special theory and wrote Science and Hypothesis. Some of his thoughts actually sowed the seeds for Einstein's theory of relativity, such as the idea that time is relative.
21. What did the members of the Olympia Academy have in common
A. They lived on high wages. B. They tended to laugh at each other.
C. They loved reading and studying. D. They were 18th- century mathematicians.
22. Which of the following does David Hume agree with
A. Reason motivates people. B. Every human sense is mysterious.
C. People should see everything with doubt. D. The chief benefit of philosophy arises directly.
23. Who probably inspired Einstein's theory of relativity
A. Conrad Habicht. B. David Hume. C. Ernst Mach. D. Henri Poincare.
B
18 years ago, a 14- year- old boy from Kasungu district in Malawi was forced to drop out of school for lack of fees. At the same time, a severe famine was destroying his village, claiming people's lives and leaving desperation in its wake.
This was a situation to break the strongest of minds but William Kamkwamba did not give up. Young as he was, he knew that education was where his future lay. He found hope in the library and feasted on the knowledge that he harvested from its books. It was there that he came across a science textbook entitled Using Energy. He learned that he could generate electricity using wind. The youngster realized that, if mastered, this power could help his village in exceptional ways.
Armed with determination and an iron will, the teenager set out to build a windmill out of random materials from a scrapyard(垃圾场). Though his outside world was collapsing to dust, the youngster did not hesitate about his purpose. He defended himself from all doubt and criticism. He worked tirelessly until his dream of bringing electricity to his village became reality. Soon, he was caught in the center of media attention that took him to new places that he would never have stepped on without his invention.
In his village, the dust has not settled yet and the winds of change continue to blow across the land. Windmills pump water to irrigate crops, sweeping away another period of hunger. William's former primary school boasts new and stronger buildings, thanks to the help of well- wishers and the villagers’ united efforts.
What seemed like a hopeless situation has been turned into an inspirational story that motivates each and every one of us, persuading us that no misfortune is set in stone. William refused to be a school drop- out forever. He sought solutions for his problems and continued fighting even when the going got tough. He was able to rise above poverty to become a graduate from one of America's best universities, Dartmouth College.
24. What inspired William to bring electricity to his village
A. His realization of the impact of electricity. B. His awareness of the role of education.
C. The science textbook entitled Using Energy. D. The severe famine destroying his village.
25. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. All people didn't support William's dream at first.
B. The public had little interest in William's invention.

D. The windmill is energy- efficient and environmentally friendly.
26. What does the underlined words“ set in stone” in the last paragraph mean
A. Visible. B. Avoidable. C. Unchangeable. D. Unpredictable.
27. What message does the author want to convey in this story
A. Knowledge feasts mind and education promises wealth.
B. Necessity inspires invention and hardship makes heroes.
C. Criticism promotes success and doubt facilitates creation.
D. Adversity motivates inspiration and support pushes solutions.
C
Capybaras(水豚) are group animals, so they do not like being alone. In reality, leaving a capybara alone is not only uncomfortable for the animal, but it can be harmful to their physical health, as well as their mental well- being. Capybaras love to talk to each other throughout the day. Groups of capybaras spend their days sunbathing along the edge of rivers, where they enjoy swimming together in the water. They spend half of their lives in the water.
Since they spend so much time around water, it makes sense that capybaras would come into contact with a wide variety of other animals who stop in for a drink. Capybaras are gentle and peaceful river animals who enjoy napping along the water's edge — and often do so with other animal species as well. You can find pictures all over the Internet of these lovely animals lying beside turtles, birds, ducks, rats, and even monkeys as they enjoy a nap by the water.
Capybaras are also known to be excellent and friendly taxis in the animal world. Birds and monkeys commonly stand on the back of a capybara for a ride as capybaras search for grass to eat. Sometimes capybaras even serve as boats for other animals, letting them sit on their heads as they swim through the water!
However, if you see a capybara lying on its side with a yellow- headed caracara (长腿兀鹰) stopping on its body, don't panic just yet. Most likely the capybara is enjoying a nice spa day. Birds often make friends with capybaras and act as a natural cleaning service, picking off bugs that live in the capybara's fur. It's a symbiotic relationship, since the yellow- headed caracara also gets to enjoy eating a bunch of tasty bugs.
28. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us about capybaras
A. Their appearance. B. Their life habits. C. Their survival skills. D. Their risks in health.
29. Why does the author call capybaras“ friendly taxis”
A. They allow other animals to stay on their backs or heads. B. They carry their food by riding on another animal. C. They guide other animals to swim through the water. D. They search for food for birds and monkeys.
30. What does the author mean by saying“ don't panic just yet” in the last paragraph
A. The caracara won't attack you. B. The caracara may just take a break.
C. The capybara won't suffer any injury. D. The capybara may be providing its cleaning service.
31. What can we infer about capybaras according to the passage
A. They can live in harmony with other animal species. B. They hate lying beside lovely animals.
C. They enjoy swimming alone. D. They are aggressive animals.
D
If you recently had trouble figuring out if an image of a person is real or generated through artificial intelligence (Al), you' re not alone. A new study from University of Waterloo researchers found that people had more difficulty than was expected distinguishing who is a real person and who is artificially generated.
The Waterloo study saw 260 participants provided with 20 unlabeled pictures: 10 of which were of real people obtained from Google searches, and the other 10 generated by Stable Diffusion or DALL-E, two commonly used AI programs that generate images.
Participants were asked to label each image as real or Al- generated and explain why they made their decision. Only 61% of participants could tell the difference between AI- generated people and real ones, far below the 85% threshold(门槛) that researchers expected.“ People are not as adept at making the distinction as they think they are,” said Andreea Pocol, a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo.
Participants paid attention to details such as fingers, teeth, and eyes as possible indicators when looking for AI- generated content - but their assessments weren't always correct. Pocol noted that the nature of the study allowed participants to compare photos in detail, while most Internet users look at images in passing.“ People who are just doomscrolling(滚动) or don't have time won't pick up on these clues,” Pocol said.
Pocol added that the extremely rapid rate at which AI technology is developing makes it particularly difficult to understand the potential for malicious or illegal action posed by AI- generated images. The pace of academic research and legislation(立法) isn't often able to keep up:AI- generated images have become even more realistic since the study began in late 2022.
“ Disinformation isn't new, but the tools of disinformation have been constantly shifting and progressing,” Pocol said.“ It may get to a point where people, no matter how trained they are, will still struggle to differentiate real images from fakes. That's why we need to develop tools to identify and counter this.”
32. What does the underlined word“ adept” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Expert. B. Quick. C. Alarmed. D. Puzzled.
33. What decreased the accuracy of the result of the experiment
A. Ignoring facial expressions. B. Drawing a conclusion in a hurry.
C. Lacking professional guidance. D. Failing to distinguish the details.
34. What's Pocol's advice on dealing with disinformation
A. Providing people with related training. B. Banning the spread of fake information.
C. Doing some field research in person. D. Developing practical tools to identify it.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. Methods of distinguishing disinformation. B. Threats caused by AI- generated images.
C. Difficulties in telling AI- generated images. D. Differences between artificial and real images.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What Is Emotional Eating
Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of satisfying hunger. 36 Have you ever finished a whole bag of chips out of boredom or downed cookie after cookie while preparing for a big test But when done a lot — especially without realizing it — emotional eating can affect weight, health, and overall well- being.
Not many of us make the connection between eating and our feelings. 37
One of the biggest myths about emotional eating is that it's caused by negative feelings. Yes, people often turn to food when they' re stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. But emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine's Day or the celebration of a holiday feast. Sometimes emotional eating is tied to major life events, like a death or a divorce. 38
Emotional eating patterns can be learned:A child who is given candy after a big achievement may grow up using candy as a reward for a job well done. 39 It's not easy to“ unlearn” patterns of emotional eating. But it is possible. And it starts with an awareness of what's going on.
We' re all emotional eaters to a degree. But for some people emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious weight gain or other problems. The trouble with emotional eating is that once the pleasure of eating is gone, the feelings that cause it remain. 40 That's why it helps to know the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger.
Next time you reach for a snack, wait and think about which type of hunger is driving it.
A. Believe it or not, we' ve all been there.
B. If a crying boy gets some cookies, he may link cookies with comfort.
C. One study found that people who eat food like pizza become happy afterwards.
D. And you often may feel worse about eating the amount or type of food you like.
E. Understanding what drives emotional eating can help people take steps to change it.
F. Boys seem to prefer hot, homemade comfort meals, while girls go for chocolate and ice cream.
G.More often, though, it's the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to fort in food.

As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

内容分析:
Paragraph 1:
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but things didn’t go as smoothly as he had hoped. Halfway through, a sudden rainstorm swept in, making the muddy track slippery and treacherous. Ali stumbled several times, each fall leaving him with scrapes and bruises. Yet, he refused to give up. With each step, he remembered Zahra’s smiling face and the promise he had made. The crowd cheered him on, impressed by his determination. Finally, with a burst of strength, Ali sprinted to the finish line, crossing in third place.
Paragraph 2:
Filled with delight, Ali walked home quickly. As he neared their humble home, he spotted Zahra waiting anxiously at the door. She ran towards him, her eyes shining with excitement. Ali reached into his bag and pulled out the new shoes, still in their box, and presented them to her. “ Here they are, Zahra!I did it for you!” Zahra’s face lit up with joy as she hugged her brother tightly. The two of them stood there, united in their triumph, knowing that no matter how hard life might be, they could always rely on each other.
