I was traveling with my husband and three teenage sons in the United States. We ordered our food at a fast-food place, and with my meal I also wanted a blueberry pie. My husband is the chatty one in the family and likes to socialize, so he started a conversation about the place where blueberries grow with the waitress. She answered, with some anxiety, “They grow on trees.”
The whole family’s jaws dropped! How could this girl not know where blueberries grow We tried not to embarrass her, and just took the opportunity to teach her a little about how blueberries grow, on small shrubs (灌木) on the ground. She seemed to appreciate learning something new. We can’t know all the same things, as you'll see from the next thing I'm going to tell you.
In 2002 our family made a short trip to a coffee plantation. The road to the plantation was narrow, filled with sharp bends. I worried about hitting another car. We didn’t, lucky us! When we finally got to our destination, we learned a lot about the plantation and coffee production, but we didn’t see any coffee plants. Where were they We decided to ask one of the people working there. “So where are the coffee plants We can’t see them anywhere.”
She reached out her arm and caught a twig (细枝) right next to us and explained, “This is the coffee plant and these little things will be coffee beans.” I looked around in embarrassment, as we were surrounded by coffee plants! She explained that coffee plants aren’t big and that they have to grow in the shade of other bigger plants. I appreciated her lesson.
We love our coffee, but I’m sure most of my countrymen would not be able to recognize a coffee plant among other tropical plants if asked. Our jaws can drop at different things, depending on geographical locations, at what we know and don’t know. Never take anything for granted!
4. By saying “The whole family’s jaws dropped!”, the author means that ________.
A. the waitress was extremely ignorant B. the waitress gave the strangest answer
C. the whole family was greatly surprised D. the whole family had problems with their mouths

6. What can we learn about the blueberry plant and the coffee plant
A. They produce the same beans. B. They grow in the tropical areas.
C. They look very similar to each other. D. They are shrubs growing on the ground.
7. What message does the author want to convey in the passage
A. The pot calls the kettle black. B. Two heads are better than one.
C. Don't judge a book by its cover. D. There are spots even on the sun.
C
There is hope for our planet’s survival. Innovative products are being designed to reduce our dependence on plastic, single-use plastic in particular.
One such innovation comes from international design firm Carlo Ratti Associati with its “Feel the Peel” machine, an experimental rounded juice bar that not only makes freshly squeezed orange juice, but also 3D prints a recyclable bio plastic cup with the leftover orange peels (果皮).
Designed with global energy company Eni. The juicer is 10 feet tall and topped with a massive dome (圆顶) feeding the juicer with oranges on demand. The dome is made up of round tracks that hold up to 1,500 oranges. A3D printer is set up in the base of the machine.
The machine goes like magic. When an order is placed, the oranges slide down the tracks to a squeezer, and the juice is then deposited (使沉积) into an “orange peel” bio-plastic cup, ready to enjoy. Meanwhile, the freshly squeezed peels fall down a tube and gather at the bottom of the machine where they are dried, milled and mixed with Poly lactic Acid, creating a bio plastic material. The bio plastic is then heated and melted into a filament (细丝) and the 3D printer then creates recyclable bio plastic cups, ready to be filled with freshly squeezed juice.
How cool that is! It seems that Carlo Ratti Associati and Eni have plans to take “Feel the Peel” beyond just orange juice.
“The principle of recycling is a must for today’s objects,” says Carlo Ratti, “Working with Eni, we tried to show recycling in a very tangible way, by developing a machine that helps us to understand how oranges can be used well beyond their juice. The next improvement of “Feel the Peel” might include new functions, such as printing fabric for clothing from orange peels.”
8. What can we know about “Feel the Peel” machine
A. It increases the output of orange juice.
B. It makes orange juice taste better.
C. It bans the use of single-use plastic.
D. It makes something beyond orange juice.
9. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4
A. The reason for the machine’s popularity.
B. The way the machine works.
C. The structure of the machine.
D. The way to use the machine.
10. What is Carlo’s attitude to the future of the machine
A. Pessimistic. B. Cautious. C. Positive. D. Indifferent.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A Orange Juicer 3D Prints Bioplastic Cups
B. A New Form of Orange Peels
C. Different Innovative Products Are Being Designed
D. Carlo Invents Several Recyclable Machines
D
When Dr. Ken Duckworth, author of You Are Not Alone, interviewed 130 people about mental health conditions for his new book, he found a common point among many of his interviewees: they used hobbies as a way to manage their stress. “Engaging in activities, particularly ones that help you feel connected to something, is really valuable for people’s mental health overall,” Ken says.
A hobby, in the straightforward definition, is “the pursuit outside one’s regular occupation”, something other than the required daily duties. We should view a hobby as a form of leisure, even self-care, with a focus on doing something that brings joy or relaxation without guilt.
Hobbies are good for the brain. Beyond being a helpful distraction from life’s given stressors, a hobby can make us feel excited, which promotes the release of dopamine (多巴胺) . Even the thought of that exciting new activity can release dopamine. When we get excited about a hobby, we activate the brain’s reward system, which can motivate us to stick with it. “You will then start the cycle where you start to expect to enjoy the experience again, and then you become more motivated to seek out that experience,” Dr. Ciara says.
“Feeling a lack of motivation or interest in doing things is a common symptom of depression, so having a hobby can actually work as a protective measure,” Ciara says.
In addition, hobbies are good for the soul. Some hobbies can provide you with a sense of purpose that Ken considers a “gearshift”. “I don’t know if I considered my writing a book for the first time a hobby, but it was a definite gearshift for me, which makes me stop doing my daily duties and work on something new,” he says. A hobby can stress that your identity isn’t tied solely to the work you get done during the day.
“How do you start You don’t need to necessarily make the world a better place,” Ken says. “You should think about yourself. It may help to think about the things you liked doing as a kid, and find ways to incorporate those things in your life now, however small,” Ciara says.
12. What do we know about Ken’s interviewees
A. Few of them had stress. B. Many of them had hobbies.
C. All of them had mental problems. D. Some of them had a regular occupation.
13. What happens when we get excited about a hobby
A. We make one part of the brain active.
B We experience symptoms of depression.
C. We increase interest in our daily duties over time.
D. We feel guilty at involving ourselves in leisure activities.
14. Which of the following best explains “gearshift” underlined in paragraph 5
A. Target. B. Surprise. C. Problem. D. Adjustment
15. What’s the purpose of this text
A. To introduce a new hobby.
B. To call on people to develop a hobby.
C. To introduce the book You Are Not Alone.
D. To demonstrate the process of releasing dopamine.

We all know that fish tanks bring comfort and peace for adults—or at least, we are in a better mood after staring at our fish for a while. But what about kids ___16___

Keeping a fish tank also has a direct effect on kids' mental health. ___18___ One study has shown that people feel more relaxed and calmer after watching live fish in a tank for five minutes. Interestingly, studies have also shown that watching fish in a tank helps calm kids. So why not bring that experience to your home
___19___ One fun part of having a fish tank is choosing from a range of fascinating fish, plants and other decorations. If you can, get kids involved in this process by bringing them along to the fish store with you when you select fish or decorations. You can discuss with your kids about your choices. ___20___ It might not seem like you're teaching anything—but through these conversations, kids are learning to think creatively. B. To add to the benefits, it inspires creativity.
C. Keeping a fish tank brings lots of fun to kids.

Ciara says.
“Feeling a lack of motivation or interest in doing things is a common symptom of depression so having a hobby can actually work as a protective measure,” Ciara says.
B. We experience symptoms of depression.
C. We increase interest in our daily duties over time.
D. We feel guilty at involving ourselves in leisure activities.
14. Which of the following best explains “gearshift” underlined in paragraph 5
