Going on your first solo (独自的) holiday can be a frightening prospect — in fact, it took Anne Mortlock three years to pick up the courage to book her first adventure.
Anne Mortlock initially felt hesitant about traveling alone, but was encouraged by her sister, a travel agent, to take her first solo trip with Just You, a tour company catering to solo travelers. Her first voyage took her to China, which she found “just perfect”, prompting her to quickly book another adventure to Namibia.
In Namibia, Anne experienced what she called “happy to be alive” moments, including an unforgettable encounter with a herd of elephants during a game drive. The sight was so awe- inspiring that it made her speechless. She chose to capture the essence of the moment rather than trying to record it with her camera. Other highlights included an optional cruise (乘船游览) in Walvis Bay, where she enjoyed dolphin sightings along with oysters and champagne.
The natural beauty of Namibia’s deserts and sand hills left a lasting impression on Anne, as did the iconic trees of the Petrified Forest, which are believed to be 700 years old. She appreciated the guidance of a local tour guide who introduced them to unique locations, such as a mountaintop offering unique views of the plains below.
Traveling with a diverse group of fellow solo adventurers, Anne developed lifelong friendships. She explained: “The group was a nice mix of ages and everyone had such a mix of life stories and experiences — they were a fascinating bunch of people to travel with. These connections were so impactful that four of us in the group planned future activities together back in the UK.”
Now filled with confidence to explore more of the world, Anne is looking forward to traveling to Vietnam with her sister and brother- in- law. She also has her eye on Costa Rica and another African adventure, though she has yet to decide on a specific destination.
4. What does the underlined word “prompting” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Reminding. B. Allowing. C. Causing. D. Instructing.
5. Which can best describe Anne when she was in Namibia
A. Delighted and grateful. B. Surprised and proud.
C. Regretful but relieved. D. Tired but excited.
6. What can be inferred about Anne’s fellow solo adventurers
A. They are mostly young people. B. They make Anne’s travel colorful.
C. They have a spirit of adventure. D. They show Anne around many sights.
7. From which section of a website can the text be seen
A Sports. B. Celebrities. C. Events & Festivals. D. My Footprints.

Each spring, scientists hide more than 1,600 lunchbox- size recorders across the forests of the Sierra Nevada range in the western U. S. These devices record a million hours of the sound of the California spotted owl (斑点猫头鹰) — valuable information about where the endangered species spends its time. But it’s a lot of recordings for a human to sift (筛选) through.
“There’s no way we can listen to that — not even close, right ” says Connor Wood, a research associate who co-leads the owl project. It turns out this team actually can process this amount of data — they just need a little help from BirdNET, an AI-powered system launched in 2018 that can identify more than 6,000 species of birds across the globe just by their calls. More research is showing that AI can recognize bird behaviors and where they mainly live, which is critical for conservation.
In 2016, Wood approached Stefan Kahl, a computer scientist, to help create an algorithm (算法) that processes bird sounds recorded in the wild. Two years later, the team launched the official BirdNET app, which allows people across the world to upload their own recordings from a variety of devices, including laptops and smartphones. Since then, BirdNET has collected roughly 150 million high-quality bird sounds.
With funding from the U. S. Forest Service and National Park Service, Wood and his team recently used BirdNET to create the first ecosystem- wide assessment of spotted owl populations across the Sierra Nevada, which increasingly face threats from foreign species or wildfires. This information shows owl population trends can boost restoration and conservation efforts.
In his 2023 study, ecologist Cristian Pérez- Granados reviewed a range of scientific literature on BirdNET. His research found that BirdNET didn’t always register a bird’s song, and sometimes misidentified it as another species, which results in “false positives”. Users of another AI- powered app, Merlin, have also reported cases of misidentification, which could have negative impacts on research projects containing citizen science data.
8. Why are the recorders used across the forests of the Sierra Nevada range
A. To track the movements of various species. B. To help spot some endangered animals there.
C. To collect sound of California spotted owls. D. To monitor human activities in the forests.
9. How does Stefan contribute to the BirdNET project
A. By providing fund for the project. B. By offering technical support to BirdNET.
C. By helping record the bird sounds. D. By solving threats from foreign species.
10. What does the author want to convey about BirdNET in the last paragraph
A. It is to be improved by scientists. B. It has some recognized limitations.
C. It offers accuracy in identifying birds. D. It can be used to discover other animals.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. AI Is Helping Scientists Protect Birds B. High Tech Is Being Used in Bird Identification
C. California Spotted Owls Are Facing Challenges D. Foreign Species Are Killing Endangered Birds
D
A phenomenon that concerns many parents is that American children are not learning to read. And schools are struggling to improve the dropping test scores: focusing on phonics(拼读法). But in doing so, they are ignoring something of equal importance: the role knowledge plays in helping children become good readers.
To be clear, not all kids suffer from poor reading skills. International comparisons indicate that American children below the age of 10 are competent at identifying words and summarizing the main topic of a text.
However, once kids enter middle school and standardized tests begin measuring deeper levels of reading comprehension, scores decline. By age 15, only 14 percent of U. S. children are good at reading and nearly 20 percent are failing to read at a baseline proficiency(基线水平). Most ninth- graders in the country are not skilled at absorbing and using information obtained from written material.
So, what is deep reading comprehension, and how might we promote it in schools When reading fiction or poetry, deep comprehension involves using clues in the text to make inferences about the characters’ underlying (隐含的) emotions. When it comes to the sciences, deep comprehension consists of calling up relevant background knowledge and integrating it with information from the text. High- schoolers will read history or journalism and ask: Who wrote this, and what agenda was the writer promoting In a word, deep comprehension means taking advantage of prior knowledge to dynamically engage with writers and their works.
The process of teaching kids to read better through knowledge acquisition must start early. Data gathered at home, schools and in labs show that 1- to-3- year- old children who have conversations with older people learn to read more easily than children who do not.
And it’s not just the quantity of conversation that matters. The information in those discussions shapes better literacy skills. Exploring conversation is key to helping children to become good readers. Such discussion leads to reading comprehension skills that go beyond the shallow standards we’ve set.
12. What do US schools pay little attention to
A. Test scores. B. Student equality.
C. Word pronunciation. D. Knowledge acquisition.
13. What’s the purpose of paragraph 3
A. To show the necessity of deep reading comprehension.
B. To state the impact of tests on reading comprehension.
C. To present the students’ bad academic performances.
D. To prove the significance of the school reading guide.
14. Which can help improve children’s reading comprehension skills
A. Reading more good works. B. Ignoring the author’s inner emotions.
C. Engaging in deep discussions. D. Focusing on conversations in books.
15. What’s the text mainly about
A. Finding new methods of developing better reading skills.
B. Improving deep reading comprehension of US students.
C. What skills can be acquired from early conversations.
D. Why reading comprehension is important to students.

WINNING
Tom Perry concentrated hard. The rocket competition would begin shortly. He had never lost a contest, but that didn’t calm him. Tom glanced at the other rockets. They all had their own problems. One rocket, however, caught his eye. It’s perfect in every aspect. His critical eye detected that this rocket could beat his. It belonged to a newcomer — ED. Suddenly, Ed turned, his sight pausing on Tom’s rocket. Admiring it for a while, he then gave Tom a thumbs- up with a smile.
The announcer began to explain the competition. Tom barely listened; he couldn’t help but repeatedly look over to Ed’s rocket. Suddenly his heart did a leap. Tom knew that Ed had no chance of winning. He had noticed that as Ed lifted his rocket to place it on the launch pad, one fin (翼) had caught against something on the ground, pulling it away from the rocket and making it loose. But Ed hadn’t noticed. He glanced back at Tom and gave another thumbs- up sign. Tom felt sorry but decided he wasn’t going to des troy a sure win by saying anything. Anyway, it was up to Ed to keep checking his rocket.
The contest began. Most gained respectable heights but none exceeded (超过)1,000 feet. Tom watched, but the problems the others had didn’t make him feel good. For the first time the looks on their faces bothered him.
Tom thought about the loose fin of Ed’s rocket, wondering if he should say something. He was lost in thought and didn’t hear his name being called. When it was repeated, it shocked him. He moved to the pad. With a shaky hand, he connected the wires to the igniter (点火器). Stepping back to the firing board, he took a deep breath and pushed the button. His rocket climbed wonderfully to a height of 1,100 feet. As he ran out into the field to pick up his rocket, he heard Ed’s name being announced.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Ed lifted his rocket and approached the launch area.

Each spring scientists hide more than 1,600 lunchbox- size recorders across the forests of the Sierra Nevada range in the western U.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11. A

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】范文
Ed lift cd his rocket and approached to the launch arca. Tom watched as Ed carefully placed his rocket on the launch pad making sure everything was in place. As Ed stepped back and prepared to push the button, Tom’s hear raced. He knew that the loose fin could cause the rocket to veer, off course, potentially causing it to crash. He couldn’t bear the thought of Ed losing because of a simple mistake that he had noticed but had’n mentioned. In a split second decision, Tom called out to Ed, warning him about the loose fin. Ed quickly checked his rocket and fixed the fin just in time. The rocket soared into the sky, reaching an amazing height.
The figure of 1150 feet came as a shock to Tom. He had been so sure that his rocket would be the highest, but Ed’s rocket had surpassed his by fifty feet. Tom felt a mix of emotions — disappointment a not winning, but also a sense of pride for doing the right thing by helping Ed. As the crowd cheered for Ed’s victory, Ed excitedly ran towards Tom and hugged him tightly, tears of gratitude streaming down. At that moment, Tom realized that winning wasn’t everything. He had gained something much more valuable-the respect of his peers and the satisfaction of knowing he had helped someone else succeed. From that day on, Tom made a promise to himself to always be a good sport, whether he won or lost.
