Dear Chris,
I’m thrilled to invite you to be part of something truly special! We’re putting together a charity concert next month with the goal of raising funds to support students from economically disadvantaged families. It’ll be a night filled with heartwarming music and shared smiles in our school auditorium.
Now, here’s where you come in. We’ve been fans of your performances, and we’d be absolutely excited to have you share your gift with us. Here are a few ideas that might suit your style: If you fancy taking center stage, how about a solo piano performance of a classical piece It would be a showstopper! Or, if you’re up for it, a duet with other student musicians could be a magical collaboration that our audience would love.
I’d like to hear what you think. Just let me know by the end of this week. Looking forward to your reply and hopefully seeing you on stage!
Yours,
Li Hua

They started by picking up the toys and organizing them into respective boxes. Tom started rummaging through a pile of clothes and discovered an old comic book that he had been searching for weeks. Nathan, on the other hand, found a missing puzzle piece buried under a stack of papers. The boys couldn’t contain their excitement as they continued their search. As they explored the room, they stumbled upon forgotten treasures, like a shiny rock, a long-lost action figure, and a secret stash of candies. Each discovery brought laughter and joy, making the cleaning process more enjoyable than they had ever imagined.
Slowly but surely, the room began to look tidier. Father watched with delight as his plan unfolded. He saw her boys working together, helping each other find hidden gems, and laughing along the way. With each item they found, Tom and Nathan grew more motivated. After what seemed like hours of searching and cleaning, the boys finally declared their search complete. The room was now tidy, and their treasures were proudly displayed on the shelves. Mom entered the room, amazed at the transformation. As promised, Mom let the boys choose their favorite dessert for the night. They happily enjoyed their treats, savoring the victory that came from working together and turning a ordinary task into a memorable experience.

W: Hi there, Tom. I’ve just finished my piano lesson. Have you been practicing your guitar lately
M: Yeah. I’ve been learning some new songs. I love the feeling when I finally get a song right.
W: We only need someone on drums and we could form a band.
Text 2
M: Hi, Gina. Is that you What brings you here
W: Oh, hi, Kevin. I’m adopting this cute little dog here. She’s so friendly and well- behaved.
M: We haven’t met since university. What about a chat at the caf nearby My work is almost finished.
Text 3
W: I tried that new recipe you shared — the chocolate chip cookies. They were a hit with my family.
M: I’m glad you liked them. I’ve shared that recipe with so many people and they all say the same thing. Baking can be so rewarding.
W: It certainly can.
Text 4
M: I’m reading an amazing book. I got it from the library. It’s a real page- turner.
W: Which one is it I’m looking for something new to read. I’ve just finished my latest book.
M: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. You’ll love it.
Text 5
W: Did you hear about the charity event at the village hall next weekend
M: Yeah, I saw the flyers (传单) . There’s going to be a band and food. Are you going
W: Absolutely. I’m volunteering there to show people the way. It’s for a great cause.

M: Hey, you won’t believe what happened earlier today. I had to rescue a cat that was stuck in a tree.
W: Oh, really Tell me all about it.
M: It was quite a challenge. The poor thing was terrified and wouldn’t come down. I had to get a ladder from my neighbor but, even then, it took some time to get the cat to trust me. Finally, after a bit of patience, I managed to reach it and bring it down safely.
W: That’s so kind of you. It sounds like quite an adventure.
M: It was. I’m just glad I could help the poor creature.
Text 7
W: Charles Martin, thank you for joining us today. Could you tell us about your recent project
M: Of course. I’ve been working on a new environmental program in our community. We’ve been organizing clean-up events and planting trees to reduce pollution.
W: That deserves praise. How does your family feel about the time you’re devoting to it
M: Well, it’s been challenging. My family has been supportive, but I can sense their concerns.
W: I see. What are their major concerns
M: They worry that I might not have enough time for study or that I’ll neglect my responsibilities at home.
W: That’s understandable. How do you plan to address these concerns while continuing your important work
M: It’s a balancing act for sure. I’m making an effort to involve them in some of the community activities, so it becomes a family effort. And I’ve been working on better time management.
Text 8
M: Sorry I took so long. I couldn’t find our seats anywhere — these cheering sections in this stadium are crazy right now!
W: It’s a very close match. We’ve only got 20 minutes left. How do you think the game will end
M: I don’t know, Eva. We’ve bought tickets and watched West Ham United F. C. play at home dozens of times. These games are hard to predict.
W: I know. But look at all of us fans together, cheering on our team from the stands. We can cheer our team to victory.
M: I hope so. It’s still a draw now. But if the coach doesn’t switch some players on the field, we’ll definitely lose.
W: Have some faith!
M: Well, as long as we keep up our excellent defense and passing, we’ll stop the visiting team from winning.
W: Our team’s movement is excellent, and we’ll get at least two more goals in the net by the game’s end. You’ll see!
M: I hope you’re right!

W: Hey there. How’s life at university treating you You’ve been there since September and it’s the end of December now.
M: Oh, it’s been quite an experience. I’m really enjoying it.
W: It’s great to hear you’ re enjoying it. What’s been the most enjoyable part so far
M: Well, I’ve made some fantastic friends here. I’ve met people from all walks of life. And I’ve even joined a club for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s been a lot of fun exploring the nearby hiking trails and spending weekends camping.
W: Sounds great. But I can imagine it’s not all plain sailing. Any challenges you’ve had to face
M: Oh yes. Managing loads of assignments and exams can be quite stressful. And the most serious problem is the financial issue. My part- time job barely covers all my expenses, so budgeting has been a real struggle.
W: I can see how that can be tough. Where do you usually study
M: I mostly study in the university library. It’s a quiet and well- equipped place, perfect for focusing.
W: When do you usually find time to relax
M: Honestly, most of my free time is taken up by my part- time job or studying. I try to catch some relaxation time at the weekend by hanging out with friends or going for a long walk in the nearby park.

It’s quite incredible how a simple hobby can turn into a fulfilling and successful career. I want to share my journey with you, starting from my love for photography. I used to take pictures of landscapes and people during my free time. It was my way of capturing life’s beautiful moments and expressing my creativity. Little did I expect that this passion would lead to a career. Over time, I improved my skills by experimenting with various techniques and attending photography workshops. Friends and family began to notice my talent and asked me to photograph their events. This was the turning point. I started doing small jobs like capturing (拍摄) weddings, parties, and special moments. Word of mouth quickly spread, and soon, I was in demand as a photographer. As my client base expanded, so did my confidence and ambition. I realized I could turn my hobby into a full- time career. However, this journey had its challenges. The pressure of delivering perfect photos, the irregular income, and the competition in the photography world tested my patience. Now, I’ve established my own photography business, specializing in portrait (肖像) photography. I’ve traveled to beautiful places, met wonderful people, and captured countless unforgettable moments. My future plans include exploring new types of photography, teaching ambitious photographers, and continuing to find new ways to tell domestic stories through my camera.浙江金华第一中学高三年级 2024年 10月考

To Karanth, everyone in every part of the world is born with a fundamental connection to
nature. Growing up in Karnataka, she began accompanying her father into the wild at just two
years old. But in her hometown, kids grew up with a negative perspective on wildlife. Elephants
destroyed crops and sometimes people were badly injured or killed. Karanth discovered kids
wouldn’t appreciate the fact that it’s the best place to witness extraordinary animals.
In 2017, a conversation with her friend Gabby shifted her mindset towards education. Within
half a year, Karanth and Gabby had the first version of “Wild Shaale” on their hands. A program
designed for students who come into frequent contact with wildlife, Wild Shaale aims to develop a
genuine understanding of wildlife and wild spaces and move beyond wildlife tolerance to concepts
of conservation and environmental issues. The conservation education program fills a gap in
environmental learning.
While it is fortunate that a basic environmental education is supported by local government,
Karanth believes the challenge lies in the quality of the curriculum and whether it’s delivered
effectively and consistently. “You have to visualize what these schools look like. They may not
have electricity — forget having computers, internet, iPads, or anything.”
Encouraging the students to find commonalities between themselves and the animals is the
first step to changing perceptions and hopefully, behaviors. “It comes down to the same things: we
need food; we need water; we need space. Then they start to understand why situations of conflict
arise,” Karanth says. “But then how do you convince them not to get angry, not to act in a way
that leads to harm That’s something we’re trying to work on. It’s not easy.”
24. What problem might Karanth’s hometown have faced
A. Human-wildlife conflict. B. Loss of wildlife habitats.
C. Overpopulation of elephants. D. Disregard for wildlife balance.
25. Why did Karanth launch the program Wild Shaale
A. To help students identify animals. B. To fill a gap in local education.
C. To change how students perceive wildlife. D. To publicize wildlife diversity.
26. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The support to the plan. B. The barrier to the program.
C. The curriculum arrangement. D. The schools’conditions.
27. What is Karanth trying to achieve in the program
A. A shift in humans’ attitudes and behavior. B. A breakthrough in environmental studies.
C. Appropriate ways to end local conflicts. D. Approaches to changing animals’ behavior.
C
Here’s a quick quiz. Person A does a favor for you. Person B asks you to do a favor for him.
Who do you tend to like more Surprisingly, the answer is Person B. This quirk (怪癖) of human
nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect.
Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the
Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life
miserable for him. What to do Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he
could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and
paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness
will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”
Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect Some
psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts
at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I
don’t like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,” we might think. “So maybe I do like him.”
While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect.
One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey.
That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve
this is by doing favors for others. This explains a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful
and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes.
Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally
across cultures Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable
Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.
28. Why does the author mention Benjamin Franklin’s experience
A. To illustrate a dilemma in making choices.
B. To suggest a way of striking up friendships.
C. To stress the importance of strategic requests.
D. To introduce the origin of the Ben Franklin Effect.
29. What is a reason for people’s tendency to like those asking for favors
A. Reducing the tension caused by social contact.
B. Increasing the chance of getting help in return.
C. Avoiding the discomfort from conflicting thoughts.
D. Establishing a cooperative community of shared trust.
30. What does the underlined word “altruistic” probably mean in paragraph 4
A. Selfless. B. Impolite. C. Aggressive. D. Responsible.
31. What does the author think of the Ben Franklin Effect
A. It makes little sense. B. It applies to most cultures.
C. It has situational limitations. D. It has great practical significance.
D
At one time, our growing population was seen as central to wildlife extinction, resource
exhaustion, pollution and environmental destruction. But today, our concerns shift to declining
birth rates due to increased reproductive choice for women.
This is a positive development, but is often described as a “crisis” in the media, highlighting
economic and senior care challenges. Lost in the conversation are the many positive aspects of an
aging society, which is the result of people living healthier and longer lives, and common-sense
realities like reduced needs for infrastructure (基础设施) and lower ecological impacts. Also lost
is the fact that our population still grows by 80 million people every year.
And the consequences of high birth rates are severe. Among them is global warming. In fact,
increased emissions (排放) from population growth have canceled more than three quarters of the
emissions saved through energy efficiency and renewables over the past three decades.
Yet, no matter how well documented the link between population and climate, lowering our
population is notably absent from the conversation on solutions. Instead, the focus is on
technology that will supposedly allow our entire growing population to enjoy the energy-intensive
lifestyles now enjoyed by the rich, and with no climate impacts.
But “green” technology is not the solution it is advertised to be. Its expansion to the degree
needed to power a growing population at a decent standard of living would itself require a
shocking investment in fossil (化石) fuels. It also requires massive mining operations, many of
which take place on the backs of low-wage workers in Africa where it is driving destruction of
rainforests critical to the survival of great apes. Besides, it requires 10 times the land area as fossil
fuel plants for the same amount of energy generated.
When global warming threatens to push billions into unsafe temperatures, it is no time to
panic that we are adding fewer to those billions. In fact, declining birth rates should be cause for
celebration as they signify advances in gender equality and a reduced burden on Earth.
32. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. The global population is decreasing every year.
B. The benefits of an aging society are overlooked.
C. The ecological environment is turning for the better.
D. The media make up misleading news about the population.
33. What is highlighted as a disadvantage of high birth rates
A. Reduced infrastructure needs. B. Challenges in senior care services.
C. A slowdown in economic growth. D. Increased greenhouse gas emissions.
34. Why is “green” technology questioned in the text
A. It does damage to the ecosystem. B. It is not popular around the world.
C. It is unaffordable for poor regions. D. It has little effect on reducing pollution.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Aging Societies: A Global Crisis B. The Mystery of “Green” Technology
C. The Trend of Population Growth D. Declining Birth Rates: A Hopeful Sign

How to charge an electric vehicle (EV) is one of the biggest concerns people have when
working out whether going electric is right for them.
It is true that sometimes gaining access to reliable charging can seem a bit tricky. 36
First, download an app with a comprehensive map of the public charging points showing
their locations, how powerful they are, and whether they’re working. All this is vital information
because, even if you have public charging points nearby, you will need alternatives in case they’re
in use. 37
A growing number of property owners are renting out their charging points and drive ways to
other local EV drivers when they’re not using them. 38 Thus, your car gets charged, the
owners make money, and emissions are reduced.
39 For example, when your car is running out of juice, you’d just pull up to a
battery-change station from your car brand and sit in the car while a fully charged unit is changed
in. The Chinese EV brand Nio does this, but isn’t available in the UK as yet.
For now, if charging access remains difficult for you, it’s still possible to go electric—in part.
40 Many hybrid (混合) cars are now good for 50 miles of electric running before you need
to use the engine. So, if most of your driving is local, you might only need to find a charger once
or twice a week, while you have the backup of a fuel engine for long journeys.
A. But it may be easier than you think.
B. It actually worked out much cheaper.
C. There are also other innovative ways to get your EV going.
D. A plug-in EV combines a petrol engine with a smaller battery.
E. A “fast” charger usually takes eight hours to fully charge an EV.
F. So you need to get a good feel for where your nearest points are.
G. You can find a map of homeowners whose charging points are available.

Have you ever heard of and seen Canadian geese Do you know that they 41 fresh grass

Canadian geese have a good 42 for their politeness. They always bow down to you
whenever you walk by. However, I have recently found that they can sometimes be 43 to their
peers, especially on occasions when they quarrel for food——yes, these 44 gentlemen do
quarrel, just for something to eat.
Yesterday I witnessed two Canadian Geese arguing 45 for a clump(草丛 ) of beautiful
fresh grass. The clump was 46 right in the middle of them, while the two were shouting noisily,
stretching their necks as long as they could to look aggressively at each other. It’s 47 to
witness the “impolite” side of Canadian geese. Hence, I couldn’t help 48 my morning walk,
standing still to watch these “gentlemen” quarreling. Interestingly, after a short while, a truck
roared past their feast, disturbing their 49 conversation. The two geese were equally 50 by
the massive “monster”, thus giving up their conversation.
Would they start quarreling again I stood still, 51 the ridiculous question and waited.
Beyond my expectation, right after the truck’s passing by, the two geese immediately lost their
52 for quarreling as if they had forgotten all about what had happened. Even the two turned
around and left the 53 in opposite directions as if nothing had happened. They left only me
there, imagining what might have happened without the 54 .
They got along harmoniously again. Sometimes it’s not that bad to be 55 .

Martha and her husband Jeff had a fancy house in the countryside, where they spent almost
every summer together with their boys Tom and Nathan.
Tom was 10 and Nathan was 8,the two of whom were closely bonded, unlike some other
siblings who would often fight over small things. Except for one thing, cleaning! One sunny
morning, Martha called out to her children,“ Tom and Nathan, it’s time to clean your room!” The
kids sighed deeply. Cleaning their room was always a chore they disliked.
Unwillingly, Tom and Nathan made their way to their messy room. Toys were scattered all
over the floor, clothes were piled up on chairs, and books were haphazardly (随意的) piled on the
shelves. It was a complete mess!
Mom entered,“ Oh, my! This room is a disaster zone! We need to work together to clean it
up.” Tom and Nathan exchanged looks, clearly not pleased with the task at hand. They had a
history of arguing, especially when it came to cleaning their room.
Mom, sensing their unwillingness, reminded the kids,” A clean room not only look snice but
also helps us find things easily. It’s important to take care of our belongings and keep our
surroundings clean.” The boys didn’t respond, seemingly thinking about something.
Jeff, who was passing by, overheard the dialogue and decided to lend a hand. He decided to
take a different approach. He said, “I understand that cleaning can be boring, but what if we turn it
into a fun challenge Let’s see who can find the most interesting item hidden in this messy room.
The winner gets to choose what we have for dessert tonight!”
Tom and Nathan’s eyes lit up with excitement. They loved a good challenge, especially when
there was a delicious reward involved. They eagerly accepted their father’s proposal and began
searching for hidden treasures.
