The day I met Hani Irmawati, she stood alone in the parking lot of the International school, a shy seventeen-year-old in worn clothing. Despite the school’s policy against Indonesian students, she approached me, begging to improve her English. When I inquired about her motivation, expecting a local job search, she quietly expressed her dream of attending an American university.
Moved by her determination, I volunteered to help her after school. Each day, Hani woke at dawn, studying on the bus to her public high school, then joining me in the afternoon, exhausted but eager to learn. Despite her struggles with college-level English, her perseverance amazed me.
Hani’s family lived modestly, her parents working as a custodian and a maid. Their income couldn’t support her American university aspirations, dampening my initial optimism.
In December 1998, a scholarship opportunity arose, but upon reviewing the requirements, I despaired. Hani lacked the extracurricular experience and standardized test scores typical of applicants. Despite my discouragement, she remained resolute, asking me to submit her application. Unable to refuse, I completed the application, highlighting her courage and perseverance. I warned her of slim acceptance odds, but she remained steadfast.
In the following weeks, Hani intensified her English studies, and I arranged for her to take the Test of English Fluency. The computerized test posed a significant challenge for her. Just before departing for the test, she received a letter from the scholarship association. I began reading the letter with her, only to discover she’d been accepted.
Overjoyed, I celebrated while Hani stood quietly, perhaps bewildered by my shock. In that moment, I realized what Hani had known all along: success requires not just intelligence, but also the drive to persevere and the courage to believe in oneself.
4. What motivated Hani to improve her English
A. Pressure from family members. B. Curiosity about foreign languages.
C. Job prospects in the local community. D. Ambition of entering an American university.
5. What can we infer about the difficulties that Hani had
A. Hani’s parents were unsupportive of her dream.
B. Hani was uninterested in extracurricular activities.
C. Hani’s application form was not submitted on time.
D. Hani was not academically qualified for the scholarship.
6. How did the author likely feel upon discovering Hani’s acceptance to the scholarship
A. Surprised and proud. B. Relieved but envious.
C. Touched and honored. D. Shocked but concerned.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. From Shyness to Success B. A Scholar’s Journey
C. The Power of Perseverance D. Hani’s Unrealistic Dream

Can people who understand the emotions of others better interpret emotions conveyed through music A new study by an international team of researchers suggests the abilities are linked.
The study’s results provide a foundation for future research that could test the impact of socially engaged music listening on social cognitive ability, and whether listening to music can be added to therapeutic (治疗的) techniques used in social skills training for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (孤独症谱系障碍).
The findings were published recently in a scientific journal of the American Psychological Association. The study was led by Benjamin A. Tabak, assistant professor of psychology. “Empathy (共情) is most often thought of in the context of social interactions, but there are many other forms of social communication, including music,” Tabak said. “Music can convey meaning and emotion and also bring emotional responses, but what is responsible for its emotional power is poorly understood.”
Tabak and his colleagues wanted to test their theory about empathy and music. For the purposes of this study, they measured the ability to correctly understand others’ thoughts and feelings — empathic accuracy — and the extent to which one feels the emotions that another feels.
“We thought it would be interesting to study whether people who more accurately under-stand others’ thoughts and feelings might also be more accurate in understanding what musicians are intending to convey through music,” Tabak said. “Similarly, we wanted to know whether people who tend to feel the emotions that others are experiencing also tend to feel the emotions conveyed through music.”
The initial set of findings found support for both hypotheses. In particular, the results suggest that empathic accuracy as a skill extends beyond interpersonal interactions into music. Tabak believes that the study provides tentative support for the theory that music is first and foremost a social behavior that gradually develops to help individuals connect with others and better understand and manage their social environment.
8. What can the study result be used to do
A. Be the basis for the next study. B. Apply music to social skills training.
C. Decide the music suitable for autism. D. Test the impact of music on emotions.
9. About the link between music and emotions what needs further understanding
A. The effect of music. B. The academic support.
C. The function of music. D. The emotions music expresses.
10. What is Tabak’s attitude towards the study
A. Ignorant. B. Doubtful. C. Confident. D. Pessimistic.
11 Which can be the best title for the text
A. The Social Behavior Music Reflects
B. The Ability To Accurately Understand Empathy
C. Research Will Set Foundation For Further Research
D. Research Shows The Role Empathy May Play In Music

136 types of seeds, including crops, forest vegetation, flowers, and microorganisms will be carried on board the Shenzhou-16 manned spacecraft to start their space breeding journey. These seeds will contribute to the advancement of China’s agricultural science and technology and enhance food security, the China Manned Space Engineering Office announced on Wednesday in a statement.
The seeds were selected through a four-month application and review process and have been chosen from 53 institutions across the country. The project, conducted by manned spaceflight, is of a public welfare nature and does not charge any carrying fees. It has been 36 years since China’s first space seed breeding effort in 1987, the country has sent the seeds of hundreds of plant species into space on dozens of retrievable satellites (返回式卫星) and Shenzhou spaceships. Nearly 1,000 new species have been created, of which 200 have displayed outstanding performances, according to media reports.
Space seed breeding uses cosmic radiation (宇宙辐射) to mutate the genes of seeds sent into space, in order to create new species for greater variety. “Space peppers and watermelons” commonly found in supermarkets in China are successful varieties of space breeding. China ranks first in the world in the number of cultivated varieties and the range of popularization and application of space breeding. The area under cultivation for grains, vegetables, fruits and other plants developed by space seed breeding has surpassed 4 million hectares, and generated economic benefits of over 200 billion yuan ($30.51 billion), media earlier reported.
The seeds need further improvement, especially in disease resistance, through conventional breeding methods and space breeding, the Xinhua News Agency reported. Space breeding involves exposing seeds and strains to cosmic radiation and microgravity during a spaceflight mission to mutate their genes.
China’s space seed breeding level also reflects the nation’s advancing aerospace technology, Li Guoxiang, a researcher at the Rural Development Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times. And he added, “There are only a few countries in the world with mature aerospace technology, and China’s level of space seed breeding technology is world-class.”
12. What does the underlined word “mutate” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Change. B. Destroy. C. Infect. D. Enhance.
13. What do Chinese authorities need to do to further improve the seeds
A. Increase the number of seeds sent into space.
B. Cultivate new species through genetic mutation.
C. Combine space breeding with traditional breeding methods.
D. Use more advanced aerospace technology to breed seeds in space.
14. What achievement is an example of China’s space seed breeding project
A. The seeds are now capable of resisting diseases.
B. It has successfully cultivated over 1,000 new species.
C. The project has mutated thousands of plant genes in space.
D. China’s space seed breeding technology is the world’s best.
15. What is the best title for this article
A. Space Breeding: China’s Leading Role in Agricultural Science
B. Space Breeding: A breakthrough in China’s genetic technology
C. Space Breeding: Benefits and Risks for China’s Future Agriculture
D. Space Breeding: A contribution to China’s agricultural technology and food security

The other day, I was driving home, a little upset because I hated working at the weekend. On the way, I decided to buy some vegetables in the nearby greengrocer’s. Since there was still thin ice on the road, I took a glance at the back mirror to make sure no people or vehicles came close, and slowly turned the wheel to the right. Then out of my expectation, my car knocked into an electric bike, giving out a loud noise of metal clash. I came back to myself and saw out of the window screen a teenager lean on one side of the bike, one foot off the ground.
All of a sudden, a familiar scene flashed across my mind.
When I was in high school, I had fun riding my bike along the country road on extremely hot and boring afternoons during summer holidays. Sometimes I carried my little brother to the only grocery store in the neighborhood where we could buy our favorite ice cream.
Once we had an argument about what to buy. Seeing him leave the store in a temper, I jumped on the bike and tried to talk him into going back. Suddenly, he gave me a push and I was pushed towards the middle of the road when a motorbike came in my face. I fell on the ground before I could see anything clearly. Luckily, I didn’t get hurt but still couldn’t rise to my feet. The motorist, a middle-aged man, ignoring his torn jeans, hurried to check on me, "Are you okay Your leg Your foot "
"I am all right, but..."I stared at him, terrified because I was sure he would ask for "big" sum of money for compensation (赔偿). Instead, he just let me go despite his wife’s protests. Guilty as I was, I was happy that I was spared. I was really grateful to the man for pardoning a silly kid who had made such a big mistake by mistake.

9. About the link between music and emotions, what needs further understanding
A. The effect of music. B. The academic support.
C. The function of music. D. The emotions music expresses.
10. What is Tabak’s attitude towards the study
A. Ignorant. B. Doubtful. C. Confident. D. Pessimistic.
11. Which can be the best title for the text

C Combine space breeding with traditional breeding methods.

【答案】Now this boy was in the same situation I was in. The cause of the accident was clearly the boy’s responsibility. Yet I wasn’t angry as the way to deal with the accident that driver taught me years ago. I hurried out of the car to check on the boy. Luckily, he wasn’t hurt, just scared. I also checked his electric bike, and there was no damage. During this time, the boy did not say a word, but he stared hard at the back of my car.
Then I took a closer look at the damage to my car. I found the back of the car badly damaged. It would cost a lot of money to repair the damaged part. I realized why the boy was staring at the car. He’s afraid I’ll make him pay to fix his car. I comforted him, saying that he didn’t need to pay me. I would handle it myself. I let him go and reminded him to be safe in the future. The boy thanked me and rode off.
