As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children.
Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification (沙漠化). “Within10 years rich farmers became worse off and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable (可持续的) crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers (肥料) rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.”
By September2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant l million trees by 2028. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the programme to Algeria and Morocco.
24. How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her
A. They fired her enthusiasm for helping others. B. They helped her better understand her father.
C. They made her decide to leave the country. D. They destroyed her dream of being a teacher.
25. What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland
A. Cold weather. B. Soil pollution. C. Low rainfall. D. Forest damage.
26. Why did Toumi set up Acacias for All in Tunisia
A. To create job opportunities for young people. B. To promote the protection of their farmland.
C. To persuade the farmers not to use fertilizers. D. To help the children obtain a basic education.
27. Which of the following can be the best title to the text
A. Saving Water in Africa B. Fighting Poverty in North Africa
C. Holding back the Sahara D. Planting Trees in Tunisia

A Japanese producer of milk and dairy products came up with an innovative way of motivating kids to finish their milk bottles at lunch-decorating the bottles with comics.
The producer has been supplying its products to local schools, but in recent years, the company has seen a significant drop in milk consumption. According to their research, the majority of high school students (around 65%) were not finishing their milk bottles at lunch, leading to unnecessary food waste. Not finishing their milk meant they might lack calcium and other valuable nutrients. However, as many parents know, getting teenagers to consume healthy foods isn’t always easy. Fortunately, the company came up with an original and fun way to motivate students to finish their milk—comic bottles.
If you’re familiar with Japanese pop culture, comics are popular among people of different ages and backgrounds. This widespread appeal inspired the company to use comics as the main attraction for their milk bottles. They teamed up with a comic studio to produce an original and engaging comic series and printed it on their transparent milk bottles. Students could only read the comics after emptying the bottles of their nutritious content. The comics are printed on the bottles in white ink, so they are only visible once the bottles are emptied of milk.
Although students technically don’t have to drink the milk to access the comic art on the bottles, the company definitely deserves credit for their innovative solution to this delicate problem.
28. Why have the company’s milk sales fallen in recent years
A. Students have drunk less milk. B. The price of milk has been too high.
C. Milk has had too many nutrients. D. The number of students has been declining.
29. What motivates the company to paint comics on the bottles
A. Parents’ advice. B. Partner’s cooperation.
C. Marketing strategy. D. Popularity of comics.
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Consuming milk is a must. B. Innovation needs technology.
C. Students may still waste milk. D. The company will think up more ideas.
31. What can we learn from the text
A. It’s never too late to mend. B. Many heads make light work.
C. Innovation can solve problems. D. Producers should make more products
D
Smart glasses that send out a sound when an object comes into their field of view could help people who are blind to locate certain items. Blind people can be trained to move via echolocation (回声定位). This involves them sending out a noise that bounces off objects around them, with the returning echoes giving information about their surrounding area.
Inspired by this ability, Howe Zhu at the University of Technology Sydney in Australia and his colleagues wanted to create glasses that similarly give people information about what objects are close to them.
The researchers first took a pair of AR glasses with two front-facing cameras and built-in speakers. They then designed a smartphone app that used deep learning to process the visual information captured by the glasses to identify four objects: a bowl, cup, book and bottle. The team programmed a sound to play from the speakers when one of the objects came into the glasses’ field of view as a wearer scanned their head around a room. Each of the objects was assigned a connected sound. For example, when a book came into view, the wearer heard a page turning.
To test the glasses, the team enlisted seven people with varying degrees of light sense and seven people with no sight issues who were blindfolded. They sat at a table with the four objects arranged on top. When asked to pick up one of the objects, the participants who were either blind or had low vision were able to do so correctly 81%of the time, compared with a 73% success rate for the blindfolded participants.
The researchers now hope to develop this technology to recognize more objects and to allow people to use it while they are walking around.
32. Why does Howe Zhu develop smart glasses
A. To identify the nearby items. B. To confirm the returning echoes.
C. To enhance the traffic safety level. D. To test the function of ordinary glasses.
33. What does paragraph 3 focus on
A. The outcome of the experiment. B. The process of the experiment.
C. The importance of the experiment. D. The purpose of the experiment.
34. What can be learned about Howe Zhu’s smart glasses
A. Participants prefer wearing them. B. Researchers doubt their functions.
C. They benefit those with low vision. D. They catalogue different information.
35. What column of a website is the text taken
A. Education. B. Culture. C. Amusement. D. Technology.

I had booked the flights in somewhat of a hurry with just a carry-on bag, thinking 7 kgs was enough for a 3-day trip to Taupo. I thought I’d given myself enough time to get to the airport, however, as often was the case, I was running late and had to pack my bag with little time left. Confused about what to carry, I stuffed all the clothes in my little bag, taking no notice of the weight.
Thirty minutes before the flight, I was waiting at my terminal (航站楼) in the airport and couldn’t stop smiling. I was too excited to go on a much-needed trip. A little while later, I heard an announcement “Passengers flying to Taupo on Flight NZ5091 are requested to weigh your cabin luggage and collect your tag”. I stood in the line waiting for my turn, clueless about how much my bag would weigh, deep inside hoping not over the weight limit.
When it was my turn, I placed my bag on the weighing scale and whoaaaa!! It was 9.4 kgs. I asked the flight attendant if I could buy $20 extra luggage allowance (行李费) as shown on the app but I was too late for it. Instead, I was asked to pay an additional fee of $65. I either had to pay or leave something away to bring it down to 7 kgs. I asked the attendant whether they would give my stuff back to me if I returned 3 days later and surprisingly I was told I wouldn’t get it back.
To me, a bad luggage experience had the power to completely sour a trip. With no other alternatives, I decided to give up some of my stuff. Unsettled, annoyed, disappointed! As I started removing the items, I saw a lady approaching me. It looked like she had heard the whole thing. She sat down next to me. “Are you OK I should be able to help you.” She said.

【答案】The Athlete I Admire Most
As we all know, a number of excellent athletes performed well in the Paris 2024 Olympics. The athletes I admire most is Quan Hongchan, the women’s 10m diving champion.
Born in an ordinary family, she trained so hard every day that she made a remarkable achievement. Quan received perfect 10s by all seven judges on her way to winning the gold medal. She had such astonishing dives, almost non-existent splashing! When watching her amazing performance, I couldn’t help applauding her, feeling over the moon. Young as she is, she deserves our respect.
Quan Hongchan’s achievements can be said to be the result of efforts. Just as the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect”. Quan sets a good example for us senior high school students. I’m determined to study harder than before and carry forward the spirit of the Olympics: faster, higher and stronger.
第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)

【答案】 I looked up, surprised, and saw her pointing at her bag. She said he didn’t take many things and could help me share some of my belongings. I couldn’t believe the help from a stranger. But, I thought to myself “this is the best way.” I am grateful to her for her kindness and transferred my overweight items to her bag. I managed to get on the plane without paying any extra fees. When we got on the plane, our seats were far apart and we didn’t communicate much, so I knew very little about this stranger.
While I was worried whether I could get my stuff back, the plane landed. There were a lot of people getting out of the plane. I was waiting for my turn and waiting for the strange woman to pass me by and return my stuff. In fact, I had been prepared for the worst. All sorts of disturbing thoughts ran through my mind. Just then, the strange woman tapped me on the shoulder. And voluntarily returned my things. I thanked the strange woman from the bottom of my heart. It also gave me a new faith in humanity.
