Katalin Kariku along with her colleague Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2023 for the development of mRNA technology.
Kariku was born in January 1955, in a small village in Hungary. She had an ambition from early on to become a scientist. As a young adult, she became interested in messenger RNA, which carries DNA instructions to the protein-making engine of cells. She hoped that mRNA could play a key role in the treatment of various diseases. It became her mission to make her dream a reality to help cure patients. However, Kariku faced a shortage of funding for her research in her country, and she then faced the choice of stopping and doing something not connected to her mission or continuing her research at the price of having to leave her country.
After searching for posts and scholarships worldwide, Kariku accepted an offer from Temple University in Philadelphia for a postdoctoral fellowship. Kariku and her husband gave up everything they had in their homeland and bought a one-way ticket to the U. S., where they knew no one.
She was initially on track to become a full professor but received repeated fund rejections. Undeterred by the problems and challenges, she chose to continue her research. By focusing on what mattered to her every day, she “accidentally” met her work partner Dre w Weissman who was also interested in mRNA. They teamed up to work on mRNA and published papers about their groundbreaking discovery for years. Then the pandemic hit the world. The changed mRNA technology Kariku and Weissman invented was then used in vaccines (疫苗) that prevented the infection effectively.
Kariku’s life is a testament (证明) to finding one’s passion and then pursuing it every single day. Many of us know what we are fond of, but we are not good self-motivators on a daily basis.
24. What can we learn about Kariku from paragraph 2
A. She had a tolerant mind.
B. She longed to be a doctor.
C. She was fond of world tours.
D. She had a clear sense of purpose.
25. What does the underlined part “Undeterred by” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Not discouraged by.
B. Being unaware of.
C. Not motivated by.
D. Being ashamed of.
26. What is probably the main contribution of Kariku
A. Simplifying the mRNA technology.
B. Making the structure of mRNA clear.
C. Developing a vaccine for a serious disease.
D. Laying the groundwork for mRNA vaccines.
27. What lesson can we learn from Kariku’s success
A. Nothing seek, nothing find.
B. Two heads are better than one.
C. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
D. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Traditional theories have assumed that in language development, acquiring phonetic (语音的) information means learning to produce and understand these different sounds and recognizing how they form words and convey meaning. Babies were believed to learn these individual sound elements to construct words.
However, recent research suggests a different approach to understanding how babies learn languages. “We believe that speech rhythm (节奏) information is the hidden glue supporting the development of a well-functioning language system,” said study co-author Usha Goswami.
To understand whether that was the case, the researchers had 50 babies at 4, 7 and11 months old watch a video of a primary school teacher singing 18 nursery rhymes. In a carefully controlled environment, the baby participants were presented with 18nursery rhymes played via video recordings. These rhymes, sung by a native English speaker, were selected carefully to cover a range of phonetic features. The sounds were delivered at a consistent volume. Then the researchers used a method called EEG, which involved placing a soft cap with sensors on each baby's head to measure their brainwaves. The brainwave data was then analyzed to obtain the phonological information, allowing the researchers to create a “readout” of how the babies’ brains were processing the different sounds in the nursery rhymes.
Contrary to what was previously thought, the researchers found that babies don't process individual speech sounds reliably until they're about 7 months old. Even at 11 months old, when many babies start to say their first words, the processing of these sounds is still rare. However, rhythmic speech information was processed by the babies as early as 2 months old, and this processing predicted later language outcomes. The study stresses the importance of parents talking and singing to their babies, using rhythmic speech patterns.
The study opens up new ways for exploring how early speech processing relates to language disorders. This could be particularly significant in understanding and potentially handling these conditions early in life. However, the research focused on a specific group of babies without developmental disorders, mainly from an English-speaking environment. Future research could look into how babies from different backgrounds, or those with developmental challenges, process speech.
28. What is the key to language learning according to the recent study
A. The formation of the words.
B. The individual speech sounds.
C. The meanings of single words.
D. The speech rhythm information.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The ages of the subjects.
B. The features of the subjects.
C. The result of the research.
D. The process of the research.
30. What is the suggestion for parents with 2-month-old babies in paragraph 4
A. Singing nursery rhymes.
B. Saying academic words.
C. Using complex sentences.
D. Teaching individual sounds.
31. What should future study focus on
A. Improving the learning environment.
B. Increasing the diversity of the subjects.
C. Finding a cure for babies with disorders.
D. Analyzing features of perfect speech.

There is a strong smell that comes off Ratna Raju’s farm in the southeastern Andhra Pradesh state of India. The smell comes from a mixture of natural materials, like cow waste and untreated sugar. The natural materials help grow and protect crops in an area often hit by extreme weather and heat.
Farmers like Raju say natural materials protect their crops from climate change because the soil can hold more water. And they stress the crops’ stronger roots help plants deal with strong winds. Supporters say natural farming is successful in the state because of government support. Now, these methods should be spread across India’s agricultural lands. Without government support for natural farming, most Indian farmers still use farm chemicals and fertilizers. That puts them at risk when extreme weather hits. Many farmers are calling for greater state investment to help them deal with climate change.
Last December, a storm brought heavy rainfall across India’s southeastern coast. It flooded towns and fields. Early studies showed more than 240,000 hectares of crops were destroyed in Andhra Pradesh state.
Raju said the rainwater on their farms flowed into the ground in one day. The soil can take in more water because it is less solid than soil with farm chemicals. Soil with farm chemicals is dry. He added that planting different crops throughout the year helped keep the soil healthy. However, Raju’s neighbor, Srikanth Kanapala, said his farm was flooded for four days after the storm. Kanapala often uses farm chemicals and fertilizers on his farm. And he said seeing Raju’s crops held strong while his crops failed made him want to learn about other farming methods.
Kanapala expected a potential financial hemorrhage of up to $600 as a consequence of the storm, a sum that constituted a significant economic burden for a farmer in India. “For the next planting season, I plan to learn from other farmers to give up farm chemicals,” he said.
32. What drives the expansion of natural farming in India
A. The limited farms.
B. The climate impact on crops.
C. The increased use of chemicals.
D. The reduction of fertilizers.
33. What can be inferred about farm chemicals from paragraph 4
A. They help crops grow strong roots.
B. They enhance soil’s water absorption.
C. They ensure soil remains consistently wet.
D. They make crops less resistant to the storm.
34. What does the underlined word “hemorrhage” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Loss. B. Increase. C. Benefit. D. Aid.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Chemicals: Harming Indian Farms
B. Storms: a Threat to Indian Farmers
C. Natural Farming: an Answer to Extreme Weather

A Gift Beyond Measure
At an early age, I was crazy about music, dreaming of possessing a piano on which I could practice and play in the way a famous pianist did on the stage. Later when I was getting older, on my way to school, there was an instrument shop that I passed by almost every day. When I saw through the window, in the corner of the shop stood a nice piano which would always attract my eyes so deeply that I even forgot everything around me.
To my sadness, my family was truly struggling. In that period, my mother was laid off from her position and my father was only a clerk in a company. It was just a matter of getting by on a low income, not to mention buying me an expensive piano though they knew I was eager to play that piano so much. The increasing wrinkles in my father’s face even stopped me from having this thought.
Then one day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, the piano had gone! It was a big surprise. Someone had purchased the piano that I would stare at almost every day! I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. However, at the thought of not being able to see that piano any more, tears filled my eyes.
Disappointed and helpless, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. I felt as though something had been stolen in my heart. After what seemed a year, I returned home, dragging my heavy legs. Hardly had I just gone into the house when my mother called my name. Brushing away my tears, I followed the sound of her voice into the dining-room.

D. Indian Agriculture: Facing the Effect of Climate Change

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】参考范文:
I couldn’t imagine what was happening in front of me. Standing there in the room was the very piano I had been longing for day and night. With excitement and surprise in my heart, I couldn’t stop tears streaming down my face. My mother came over to me, saying they knew the piano was what I had dreamed about and my father had tried everything possible to make my dream come true. I was about to say something when there was a sound of footsteps.
Then the door opened and my father appeared, with a big smile on his wrinkled face. I gave him a big hug. “It’s so nice of you, Dad!” I said. I could not imagine how much effort he had made and how hard he was working every day. Maybe only the wrinkles on his face could tell me everything. My father kissed me on the forehead, whispering that he had earned enough to buy the piano at last. Only then did I realize that no gift could measure up to a father’s love.
①过来:came over /come up/come here
②意识到:realize /be aware of
③阻止:stop /prevent /hold back
