Washington, DC is a theatre town. Here’s where you can get the best performances and cultural experiences offered for every taste in the nation’s capital.
Kennedy Center
Kennedy Center hosts hundreds of world-class performances each year and is home to the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera. The Suzanne Farrell Ballet also counts Kennedy Center as its performance headquarters. The company—under the direction of Farrell—was first invited to perform there in 1993 and has since become one of the venue’s most famous attractions.
Woolly Mammoth Company
Woolly Mammoth Company is an experimental theatre that welcomes original plays that push the boundaries of live theatre. The New York Times has called it “Washington’s most daring theatre company”, and the half dozen plays Woolly produces each year continue to live up to that reputation.
Shakespeare Theatre Company
For more than 25 years, Shakespeare Theatre Company has committed itself to serving as the nation’s classical theatre. It operates out of two spaces, including Sidney Harman Hall at the Harman Center, which seats 775, and the Lansburgh Theatre, which seats 451. The shiny, glass-walled Harman Center showcases classic Shakespeare plays, modern updates and Shakespeare-inspired original shows.
Wolf Trap
For locals, summer isn’t complete without at least one trip to Wolf Trap, the only national park dedicated to the performing arts. The venue is best-known for performances of touring artists. The open-air theatre offers covered seating, but when the weather warms up, we suggest buying seats on the grassland and packing a picnic.

Like many young women, Joan Molinsky dreamed of a career on stage, entertaining the masses. However, her parents were skeptical; despite their daughter’s success in a number of local talent contests. Eager to see her perform in a club setting, Dr. Molinsky had his comedian-wanna-be daughter booked at the family’s beach club, which is Joan’s first dinner engagement.
Miss Molinsky started her act with a funny song, but the audiences’ attention span lasted only as long as it took the dessert carts to visit their tables. In a matter of no time, the 300 people in attendance had resumed any and all conversations they’d had prior to the pretty’s introduction on stage.
Heartbroken and ignored, Joan grounded her way through and uttered a polite “thank you” at the end of her final song. She burst into the nearby kitchen, teary-eyed with embarrassment. Her parents were also embarrassed and reinforced their belief that Joan had no future in entertainment.
Dr. Molinsky told Joan to give up her dream of comedy and pursue a more realistic career choice. His daughter went ballistic.
“I don’t care what you say!” She screamed at her father. “I do have talent. It’s my life. It’s my choice how I live it.”
The fight eventually resulted in Joan moving out of her family’s home and taking up a temporary work, while pursuing her dreams with a variety of troupes(剧团) and shows. Her dedication eventually led to a job in California as a writer and on-air “bait girl” for Candid Camera(隐蔽摄像机).
Despite her growing role on the show, host Allen Funt never could remember her first name, calling her everything from Jeri to Jeannie to Jackie. It was during her time with Candid Camera that Joan received a call from The Tonight Show, whom she had longed for over a year for a guest shot. They wanted her to appear with Johnny Carson.
Once on stage, Joan and Carson hit it off immediately. In the end, Carson wiped tears of laughter from his eyes and said aloud to his millions of viewers, “God, you’re funny. You’re going to be a star.”
The next day, dozens of appearance offers flooded in from all over the country, putting. Joan on comedy’s A-list. She also resigned from Candid Camera that day, much to the regret of an angry Funt. From that point on, no one would ever misidentify or underestimate Joan Rivers again.
24. What was Joan’s first dinner engagement like
A. It made her famous overnight.
B. She was constantly interrupted by the audience.
C. The audience gave her a lasting encouragement.
D. Few paid much attention to what she performed.
25. What does the underlined word “ballistic” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Confident. B. Excited. C. Angry. D. Compassionate.
26. How did Joan’s performance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson change her career
A. She received negative review s from the audience.
B. She decided to quit comedy altogether.
C. She became a star and received many offers.
D. She was criticized for her lack of talent.
27. What can we learn from Joan’s story
A. One should listen to parents’ advice.
B. Don’t give up on your dreams easily.
C. Success comes quickly if you do have talents.
D. No one can achieve his dream without family support.

The male western tanager (唐纳雀) looks like a little flame, while females are less showy, a dusty yellow. In the spring, they prepare to move thousands of miles to the Mountain West of Central America, flying through grasslands, deserts, and occasionally, suburban yards.
To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers fill up on insects and berries. But as global climate change causes spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers are arriving at their destination after what’s known as “green-up”, when flowers begin blooming and insects emerge. According to a study published in early March in the journal PNAS, this kind of timing mismatch between migrants (迁移动物) and their food sources, which is happening across North America, could have serious consequences for migratory birds’ survival. “In discussing climate change, we often focus on warming,” says Scott Loss, a co-author of the study. “But the length and timing of seasons — like when winter ends and spring begins — are some of the most dramatic effects of climate change.”
Loss and his colleagues used satellite imagery from 2002 to 2021 to calculate the average start of spring green-up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species, then compared that timing with the current green-up. They found that spring is indeed beginning earlier along birds’ migration routes. “By contrary, previous studies have mainly focused on songbirds in Eastern North America,” says Morgan Tingley, an ornithologist at UCLA, “but this new investigation shows that bird species in the West and at different levels of the food web might be just as vulnerable (脆弱的).”
“Part of it is knowing which species are vulnerable to various threats,” Loss says. “This adds to the knowledge about vulnerability of a wide range of bird species.” And he hopes that the information will serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible. “It’s really important, if we can’t address climate change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.”
28. What may pose a direct threat to western tanagers’ survival
A. Global warming.
B. The duration of changing seasons.
C. Loss of habitats due to human activities.
D. Decreased access to foods during migration.
29. What is unique about the new study on birds like western tanagers
A. It covers a wider geographic range.
B. It reveals the decline in bird populations.
C. It centers on the adaptation of bird species.
D. It ensures the existence of a timing mismatch.
30. What does Loss suggest we do to safeguard migratory birds
A. Lessen the effects of climate change.
B. Preserve ecosystems for bird species.
C. Address emissions and habitat loss.
D. Expand researches on threats to birds.
31. Where is the text most likely from
A. A scientific journal.
B. A bird-watching guidebook.
C. A website about climate change.
D. A magazine about wildlife conservation.
C
Do you ever find yourself randomly thinking back to the times we wandered, collecting wildflowers and smiling beneath the sky That feeling is often referred to as nostalgia (怀旧).
Psychologists have defined nostalgia as a self-conscious, social emotion, bittersweet but dominantly positive. It comes from our happy memories and our desire to go back to the past and reconnect with the people we cared about. Often, nostalgia involves sensory stimuli. On some occasions, the smell of autumn leaves might generate a fierce longing for your childhood home. Almost everyone can experience nostalgia, although its object tends to vary throughout life. One survey conducted by the psychologist Krystine Irene Batcho found that younger people felt more nostalgia for pets, toys, and holidays than did older people, who felt it more strongly for music.
In contrast to its links to negative emotions, nostalgia doesn’t make us sadder. Rather, nostalgia is a defensive response to unhappiness, one that brings relief from a negative mood. Research from 2006 shows that nostalgia can actually strengthen social ties, improve self-esteem, and uplift our mood. Other studies suggest that it can also enhance our view of life’s meaning, reduce fear of death, boost spirituality, and increase optimism.
Scholars remain uncertain about the precise mechanism behind the effectiveness of nostalgia; however, some suggest that reflecting on joyful memories strengthens our sense of self-worth and belonging, particularly during times of loneliness or self-doubt. Its power lets the happiness of the past overcome the current unpleasantness, offering a bit of escape from tough times. To form stronger connections, we can establish traditions around shared past experiences in families, friend groups, and workplaces. Observing special occasions like childhood sports or post-college meetups can give us something to look forward to.
Perhaps because it is so powerful and complex, nostalgia has received magical treatment from poets and writers. “The past is hidden somewhere outside the realm (领域), beyond the reach of intellect,” Marcel Proust wrote.
32. Why does the author mention “autumn leaves” in the second paragraph
A. To illustrate the complexity of nostalgia.
B. To emphasize the joyful nature of nostalgia.
C. To clarify nostalgia’s connection to our senses.
D. To stress individual variety of experiencing nostalgia.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The mismatch between two findings.
B. The potential benefits of nostalgia.
C. The impact of nostalgia on personal mood.
D. The mechanisms behind nostalgia’s effects.
34. What does the author suggest us do in paragraph 4
A. Create shared traditions for bonding and joy.
B. Record the social gatherings regularly.
C. Recognize the unnecessary social gatherings.
D. Say no to the concept of escapism.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Nostalgia: Why We Should Avoid Reflecting on the Past
B. Nostalgia: A Shelter Against the Unhappiness of Our Life
C. A Nostalgia Warning: Our Mental Health Being Attacked
D. Power of Nostalgia: Struggling for an Irreplaceable Present

Artificial Intelligence (AI) geolocation (互联网定位技术) solutions are changing the way researchers track and monitor wildlife, enabling more powerful conservation efforts. These systems use advanced sensors, satellite imagery, and machine learning algorithms (算法) to gather real-time data on animal movements, habitat preferences, and migration patterns. 36
Traditional tracking methods often rely on non-automatic tracking or inconvenient necklace-like systems, which may cause stress and discomfort to the animals. 37 The devices can work as tags and the camera traps can be set up remotely, which decreases human impact on wildlife.
In addition, AI-powered devices collect and analyze data precisely. Through their assistance, scientists can gain insights into habitat choices and evaluate the effect of global warming on wild animal locations. 38 For example, by analyzing the collected data, conservationists can promote targeted habitat restoration efforts according to the patterns and connections they discovered with the help of AI geolocation devices.
39 By monitoring animals’ behavioral changes in real-time, researchers can quickly detect signs of environmental issues. Sudden changes in an animal’s movements could indicate threats or problems. Researchers can then respond immediately, potentially saving the animal’s life.
Sharing geolocation data through online platforms can also help raise awareness about protecting endangered species. 40 This help them feel more connected to the issues wildlife face in habitats. The bond promotes a sense of responsibility among individuals and encourages them to contribute to wildlife conservation efforts through various means, such as donations, volunteer work, and so on.
A. This knowledge enables them to make accurate and efficient decisions.
B. However, AI tracking does not require disturbing contact with the animals.
C. AI monitoring needs fewer battery replacements than the traditional methods.
D. The solutions have offered the following key benefits to wildlife conservation.
E. Directly engaging with conservation efforts gives people a first-hand experience.
F. The AI geolocation technology significantly reduces the need for massive fieldwork.
G. With real-time data, the AI solutions also function as an early warning for wildlife risks.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was shy when I was little. Kids, adults, pretty much everyone made me nervous. I was also what most teachers and parents would call a “good kid”. I followed the rules, got good grades in school and rarely questioned authority. But then one day, one single ride on a school bus changed all that.
The school bus that day was crowded, hot, humid and smelly. Most of the other kids were busy with conversations, arguments and games. Only a few of my classmates were looking through the windows at the water filling the street. It was raining too hard. The road outside looked like a flooded stream. I sat alone as usual, speaking to no one.
Suddenly I saw a kitty on the other side of the road. Poor cat, I thought. He was all wet and didn't seem to know where to go to get out of the rain. I wanted to go and get the kitty, but I knew that the bus driver, Mrs Foster, would never allow me off the bus.It was against the rules to even stand up. I would get in big trouble for trying to rescue a cat.I also thought that the other kids would laugh at the animal that was dripping wet. They would see his misery (悲惨) as their entertainment. I could see him shaking. His movements revealed a level of fear that I had never witnessed before.
My heart was racing. Tears were rolling down my cheeks. I wanted to rush off the bus without asking permission, and pull the cat from the rain, and wrap it up in my warm jacket, But I also pictured getting into trouble before the cat could be saved, the other kids staring and laughing. I sat motionless, unable to act. I was sure that I heard his terrified meow.

Text 1
W: It’s a beautiful day. We should go for a walk in the woods. I bet a lot of people will be having picnics there today.
M: There will be too many people there. A drive to the seaside would be better.
Text 2
W: Where have you been I have been waiting here for ages.
M: I got out of bed early and set off on time but then the bus got stuck in traffic.
W: Sounds like you’re not to blame.
Text 3
M: I need a new plug for the TV. My TV is old but I like it and it still works well.
W: I think you should throw it away and buy another, but it is up to you.
Text 4
M: This place is a bit expensive, isn’t it
W: I know. Look at the price of the wine. It only costs a quarter as much at the supermarket.
M: Never mind. It’s our anniversary. Order whatever you want. I think I’ll have the steak.
Text 5
M: Maybe I should set off for the airport now. John’s plane will arrive soon. He asked me to collect him in the car.
W: You have plenty of time. It’s only 3:00 p.m. You have two hours.
Text 6
M: Oh, what a surprise to see you! Is there a problem
W: Yes, I think there is. I have been trying to call you all morning but I couldn’t get an answer.
M: That’s strange. Let me check my phone. I hope it isn’t broken.
W: There is an important meeting at work this afternoon. I wanted to let you know about it.
M: Ah, when I saw you at the door, I thought someone might be ill or have had an accident.
W: No, nothing like that. I just couldn’t get you on the phone. Is it switched on
M: I’ll have a look. Now I remember — I put it in my coat pocket and my coat is in the car! No wonder I couldn’t hear you calling.
Text 7
M: Is that the Homes Bureau Could I make an appointment to see the house on Wood Avenue
W: Yes, of course.
M: I saw it on a website. How many bedrooms does it have
W: There’s one on the first floor and two on the second floor.
M: What is the kitchen like
W: It’s quite large, and there’s a large living room as well, with a bathroom on each floor.
M: The price is quite high.
W: Well, that is the price the owners have asked — but you may be able to do a deal with them. The best thing for you to do is go and look at the house and talk to the owners.
M: Can I go this afternoon
W: Maybe that’s too soon. Would tomorrow morning be OK, say 10:00 a.m.
M: Yes, that would be fine.
Text 8
M: Do you usually add that much sugar to your coffee
W: Well, you know tea is my favorite, though I am trying to like the taste of coffee. I find it is too bitter.
M: When I started drinking coffee, I added lots of milk and sugar. As I got older, I cut out milk entirely. Now I don’t even add sugar. I just drink it black.
W: Black coffee No, thank you. However, coffee ice cream, I would gladly try that.
M: Sure, have you tried chocolate ice cream mixed in with coffee It’s heavenly. Even if you don’t like coffee that much, I bet you will like that.
W: I’ll try it if you’re buying. And I will treat you to green tea ice cream if you want to have a try.
M: Deal, let’s have a tea time dessert party. Invite a few of your friends, and I will invite some of mine. We will see who has the best taste.
W: Well, that doesn’t sound sweet.
Text 9
W: It’s dad’s 50th birthday on Saturday. It’s a big day for him, so perhaps we should do something special.
M: You mean a party
W: I thought about that, but maybe that would be hard to organize during the exam time.
M: That’s true. I do have three tests next week. Maybe we could take him to the cinema.
W: I don’t think that would be special enough.
M: We could go for a meal to his favorite restaurant — all the family.
W: That’s the best idea. I think he’d like that — you, your sister, dad and me. It would be nice.
M: I’ll call Jane and tell her not to make other arrangements.
W: Where is she
M: Her friend Alice called and they went over to Judy’s house.
W: That girl spends more time there than she does with us
M: Well, we’ll be together as a family on Saturday.
W: If we can get a table at the restaurant, that is.
M: I don’t think it will be a problem. It’s only Monday. They shouldn’t be booked up yet. Give them a call.
W: I’ll do that right away. Then this afternoon I will go to town and buy dad a present.
M: Get him a birthday cake as well.
W: No, I think I’ll make one myself. It feels nicer when someone has made an effort.
Text 10
M: Hello everyone and welcome to the garden seminar. We all know that plants grow well in warm and sunny places, but we aren’t all lucky enough to live somewhere like that. Bill and Sally Jones live in a high, windy area — not ideal for gardening — but they are also champion vegetable growers. How do they do it Well, we all know that vegetables need plenty of water — not just a few drops or a few pints, but gallons of it. It rains a lot where the Jones family live, so they have a good water supply. It’s also very open, so they get enough sunlight. The real enemy is the wind. They tried different ways of protecting the plants — planting trees for shelter and building fences — but what they use now for the more delicate plants are glass houses. With several of these they are able to grow plants which would not normally survive in their location. By adapting to the conditions in which they live, Bill and Sally have developed a winning way with their crops. And their experience can serve as a lesson for other growers who experience similar difficulties.
第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题:每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Washington, DC is a theatre town.

【答案】24. D 25. C 26. C 27. B
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了Joan Molinsky想要成为喜剧明星,并且为了自己的梦想不懈努力的故事。
24. 细节理解题。根据第三段“Heartbroken and ignored, Joan grounded her way through and uttered a polite “thank you” at the end of her final song.(伤心欲绝、无人问津的琼在最后一首歌结束时礼貌地说了声“谢谢”)”可知,琼的第一次晚餐约会很少有人注意她的表演。故选D。
25. 词句猜测题。根据第四段“Dr. Molinsky told Joan to give up her dream of comedy and pursue a more realistic career choice.(莫林斯基医生告诉琼放弃她的喜剧梦,去追求一个更现实的职业选择)”以及第五段““I don’t care what you say!” She screamed at her father. “I do have talent. It’s my life. It’s my choice how I live it.”(“我不管你说什么!”她朝父亲尖叫。“我确实有天赋。这是我的生活。如何生活是我的选择。”)”可知,琼因为对方让自己放弃喜剧梦感到生气。故划线词意思是“生气的”。故选C。
26. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“The next day, dozens of appearance offers flooded in from all over the country, putting Joan on comedy’s A-list.(第二天,来自全国各地的数十份演出邀请如潮水般涌来,让琼成为喜剧界的一线明星)”可知,琼因为The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson表演成了明星,收到了很多邀请。故选C。
27. 推理判断题。根据第四段“Dr. Molinsky told Joan to give up her dream of comedy and pursue a more realistic career choice. His daughter went ballistic.(莫林斯基医生告诉琼放弃她的喜剧梦,去追求一个更现实的职业选择。他的女儿勃然大怒)”结合主要讲述了Joan Molinsky想要成为喜剧明星,并且为了自己的梦想不懈努力的故事。可知,琼的故事告诉我们不要轻易放弃你的梦想。故选B。
D
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. C 31. A
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章从唐纳雀入手,分析北美迁移鸟类面临的挑战及其原因,最后提出建议:希望尽快减少温室气体的排放,尽可能地阻止栖息地的丧失。
28. 推理判断题。由第二段中的“To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers fill up on insects and berries. But as global climate change causes spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers are arriving at their destination after what’s known as “green-up”, when flowers begin blooming and insects emerge.
由第三段中的““By contrary, previous studies have mainly focused on songbirds in Eastern North America,” says Morgan Tingley, an ornithologist at UCLA, “but this new investigation shows that bird species in the West and at different levels of the food web might be just as vulnerable (脆弱的).” 故选A项。
30. 细节理解题。由最后一段“And he hopes that the information will serve to highlight the urgent need to lower greenhouse-gas emissions as fast as possible. “It’s really important, if we can’t address climate change immediately, to try to stop habitat loss as much as we can.” (他希望这些信息将有助于强调尽快降低温室气体排放的迫切需要。“如果我们不能立即解决气候变化问题,那么尽我们所能阻止栖息地的丧失是非常重要的。”)”可知,作者期望能够尽快减少温室气体的排放,尽可能地阻止栖息地的丧失。故选C项。
31. 推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是由第二段中的“To fuel them on their lengthy journey, western tanagers fill up on insects and berries. But as global climate change causes spring to start earlier, birds such as western tanagers are arriving at their destination after what’s known as “green-up”, when flowers begin blooming and insects emerge.

Somehow, I managed to stand up, crying, “Mrs Foster!” My voice was trembling with emotion as I broke the silence on the bus. All eyes turned to me, surprised by my sudden outburst. Mrs Foster, with a stern expression, turned around from her driving position. “What is it, young man ” she asked, her tone a mix of curiosity and annoyance. I choked back my tears and pointed out the window, my voice barely above a whisper. “There’s a kitty out there, all wet and scared. Please, can I help it ” To my amazement, Mrs Foster’s expression softened, and said that she would get off the bus to get the cat back.
Mrs Foster grabbed the cat, her gentle touch calming the shivering creature. She returned to the bus, handed it to me, and asked, “Now, what do we do with this little one ” I was taken by surprise but quickly regained my composure. “We can wrap him in my jacket to keep him warm,” I said, pulling off my jacket and wrapping it around the cat. The other kids, who had initially been skeptical, now offered their assistance, some offering tissues to dry the cat’s fur, others sharing snacks from their lunchboxes. Mrs Foster smiled approvingly. “Well done, everyone,” she said. “Sometimes, breaking the rules for the right reason is what makes us human.” That day, the bus ride became a lesson in empathy and kindness, and I realized that being brave didn’t always mean standing up to bullies or fighting battles. It also meant standing up for the vulnerable and doing what’s right, even if it meant stepping out of your comfort zone.
