应用文写作(15分)
Dear Peter,
I'm glad to hear you'll come to our school as an exchange student next term. Since you want to learn about Chinese body language in our daily life, let me tell you some.
We usually greet each other with head nodding, smiles, hand shaking and so on. During the conversation, it's good manners to have eye contact instead of staring directly at others. In class, students are required to raise their hands if they have any questions. Moreover, it's common to see youth of the same sex hold hands or hug in public places.
I hope my introduction can be of some help to you. Whenever necessary, I'm always here to give you a hand.
Looking forward to your arrival.
Yours Faithfully,
Li Hua
67.读后续写(25分)
Finally, Michael touched something. A shoe, then an ankle — It was Tiara! He scooped her into his arms and stood. Turning, he fought through the smoke and made his way to the outside. Michael put Tiara down on the doorway. And He started CPR — the first time he’d ever done so. The women stood behind him, praying silently. Soon a slight cough came from Tiara’s throat. He gave five more breaths. She opened her eyes and took a breath on her own.
Tiara was safe now; however, Michael fainted down to the ground, unconscious. After spending a couple of days in the hospital, Michael finally woke up. He suffered severe burns to his windpipe and the upper portion of his lungs. He spent over a week in the hospital. The fire worsened Michael’s pulmonary condition, and he feels the effects even two years later. As a result, he takes extra medication that helps open his airways. “It’s a small price to pay, he says. “I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I wouldn’t give it a second thought.”

All seven people have been rescued from a stricken cable car high above a remote Pakistan valley,
a spokesman for the state-run emergency services said.
Pakistani authorities said army commandos (突击队), with the help of civilians, made the final
rescues after an operation lasting hours. Floodlights were installed and a ground-based operation
reached the remaining two people late on Tuesday more than 12 hours after their cable car was
damaged, leaving it hanging unsteadily at an angle.
A helicopter had earlier plucked two children to safety before darkness. High winds meant the air
rescue had to be called off. Rescuers used the cable keeping the cable car from plunging (突然向下冲)
into the valley as a zip line to rescue three more children. Relatives of those trapped prayed while
watching the operation and anxious crowds gathered on both sides of the valley, which is in a
mountainous area of Battagram, about 125 miles (200km) north of Islamabad.
Several military helicopters had earlier in the day flown sorties and an airman was lowered by a set
of bands to deliver food, water and mandos could be seen on local TV trying to lower
themselves on ropes from the helicopters to the cable car. An expert confirmed that the rescue was
delicate because the wind created by the helicopters’ blades could further weaken cables holding the
car up in the sky.
The children trapped were teenage boys studying at the government high school. The school is
located in a mountainous area and there are no safe crossings, so it’s common to use the chairlift.
People who live in the northern mountainous regions of Pakistan often use chairlifts for transport from
one village to another. In 2017, 10 people were killed when a chairlift cable broke sending passengers
plunging into a valley in a mountain hamlet near the capital, Islamabad.

27. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph

While some feel that bookstores are fading away, one Chinese bookstore has found new life by
marching into rural areas in China to bring colorful cultural life and higher incomes lo local residents.
By absorbing local rural characteristics, the village branches of the Librairie Avantgarde
Bookstore (LAB) chain have transformed into important platforms to display local history, culture and

“Turning in profits is not our only aim. Our bookstore has become a public gathering space for
villagers. Not only young people, but many elderly residents come here. They do not buy books, but
pass the time by reading or chatting with each other in our store.” Liu Xia, the bookstore owner
explained.
She added that this is a cultural atmosphere that bookstores offer the area. Some residents have
grown accustomed to turning to the books of the store to find answers to the troubles they face, such as
operating a business or controlling tourists from urban areas. The biggest benefit of opening
bookstores in villages is that it helps provide a healthy environment for children’s growth. “My kids
often come to the store. They love reading books here. They gain knowledge and curiosity about
outside world.” one villager said.

For all the importance we place on words, whether spoken or written, much of the
communicating we do regularly comes through body language. According to pioneering research by
Dr. Albert Mehrabian, only 7 per cent of the meaning we get from human communication comes
from the actual spoken words used. An additional 38 per cent comes from tone of voice while a large
55 per cent comes from body language alone.
Researchers have long identified that certain kinds of body movements and facial expressions
can communicate information about the emotions we happen to be experiencing at the time. But are
these emotional signals shaped by different cultures or are they universal to all humans
A new research article published in the journal Emotion attempts to answer this question
through a cross-cultural study. The researchers travelled to Ratanakini, Cambodia to study members
of a distant Kreung hill tribe. Living in Cambodia s highlands, the Kreung are still largely remote
from the outside world except for occasional visitors. They have yet to be assimilated (同化)as many
other societies have been.
In the study, a set of videos were prepared featuring an American woman, displaying three
positive emotions (happiness, love, and pride) and three negative emotions (anger, fear, and sadness)
using body language alone. The effectiveness of these videos was tested using thirty-four American
participants. The videos were then presented to twenty-six Kreung individuals (eleven of whom were
female). They were asked to describe the emotions being displayed in their own words.
Results showed that the Kreung participants tended to be quite accurate in guessing which
emotions were being presented. The overall accuracy rate was sixty-two per cent though their
accuracy in detecting specific emotions such as anger and happiness was far higher. Overall, there
was no significant discre pancy between Kreung and American raters in detecting emotions,
though American participants did much better in detecting pride and love.
Still, the study does suggest that body movements can express emotions such as anger, fear,
sadness, and love even for individuals belonging to different cultures. Emotional signals reflect basic
human needs and desires that all humans share. Learning more about how basic biology and social
factors shape the way we communicate may well be essential in helping to understand ourselves
better.
32.What do the numbers mentioned in Paragraph 1 show
A. The importance of body language in communication.
B. The effectiveness of various ways of communication.
C. The relationship between spoken and written words.
D. The necessity of changing your tone of voice.
33.What is the characteristic of the Kreung
A. They live a hard and poor life.
B. They make a living through tourism.
C. They enjoy a relatively unaffected culture.
D. They use body language alone to communicate.
34.What does the underlined word “discrepancy” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Communication. B. Difference. C. Relation. D. Balance.
35.What did the researchers conclude from the study
A. Humans share the same basic needs and desires.
B. Emotional body language may go beyond culture.
C. Biology and social factors affect our body language.
D. Communicating with others can better understand ourselves.

第二节 读后续写(25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写。
At first, Michael didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’
home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house when they got a call
from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to check. That’s when he saw two
women and a girl helpless and heartbroken on their doorway.
“The baby’s in there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called,
Michael, then 64, immediately ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara, the woman’s
granddaughter and a playmate of Michael’s three youngest kids.
The thick smoke caused Michael to stumble(绊倒,跌跌撞撞地走) blindly around, burned his
eyes, and made it impossible to breathe.
After a fewminutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated(撤退,后退) outside to catch his breath.
“Where is Tiara ” he asked desperately.
“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.
Michael knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. However, taking a deep breath, he went in a
second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar design to his, he
made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of
breath.
“Baby girl, where are you ”
His throat and lungs burned as if he’d inhaled(吸入) fire instead of the smoke in the air. Every
blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but
distinct moan(呻吟) emerged. Still unable to see, Michael fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He
crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. An unlucky thought crossed his mind:
I’m probably go to die up here.
