High school students perform better on tests if they are in a classroom with a view of green space, instead of a windowless room or a room with a view of built-up space, according to research from the University of Illinois Department of Landscape Architecture.
It is the first study to show a relationship between studying with a green view and students' performance, said William Sullivan, head of the Department of Landscape Architecture. It's a consequential finding that if you have a green view outside your window, you'll do better on tests. Sullivan hopes the research results will lead to policy changes. Changes in school design, for example, would be a much better thing than any of the things we spend money on in secondary education today, Sullivan said.
The research included 94 students at five high schools in central Illinois. Students were randomly assigned (随机分配) to one of three kinds of classrooms-windowless, with a window looking out onto built-up space, or with a window looking out onto green space. Each kind of classroom had a similar size and layout. The students took part in one-on-one experiments in which they did 30 minutes of activities that included a proofreading exercise, a speech and a maths exercise. Following the activities, the students were given an attention test which asked them to repeat a series of numbers.
The findings: Students did better on both study activities and the attention test if they were in a classroom with a green view, Sullivan said.
The researchers suggest their findings can help planners and policymakers improve students' well-being and learning. For example, planners can choose sites for new schools that already have trees and other vegetation (植被), or they can plant many trees on the site; architects (建筑师) can locate classroom, dining room and hallway windows so they look onto green spaces.
11.What did the study find out about high school students
A. They like to have green plants in their classrooms.
B. They will get better grades when studying in different classrooms.
C. Changes in school design will influence their attitudes towards teachers.
D. A green view through a classroom window can improve their performance.
12.What does the underlined word “consequential” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Common. B. Important. C. Obvious. D. Early.
13.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How the study was carried out. B. Why the study was different.
C. The purpose of the study. D. The result of the study.
14.What do the researchers think of the study
A. It has drawn public attention to education.
B. It can play a guiding role in school planning.
C. It has encouraged students to get close to nature.
D. It needs more support from high school teachers.

Dear Lucy,
Glad to hear that you are going to take a trip to China next summer holiday. Here are some suggestions about how to learn Chinese well.
First of all, it is a useful way to listen to some simple Chinese conversations daily, which will help you a lot during your trip. Besides, you'd better make some Chinese friends around you and talk to them as often as possible in Chinese. I'm sure you can speak Chinese fluently before you come to China if you insist on doing what I tell you. Finally, I will send you a Chinese-English book which contains some common Chinese characters that you should master. Try and write to me in Chinese next time.
All the best!

Year-12 student Noah Little has already sat his first Chinese-speaking exam and said it was “the easiest exam I've ever done”. That view is not surprising given that the Wagga Wagga High School student loves language-so much that he has built a Chinese translation app.
Noah said his love of language was encouraged by his community. “Wagga Wagga is a place full of people from different cultures, and sometimes when I meet new people who have trouble speaking English, I like to talk to them in their own language,” he said. “I also have a few Chinese friends so I think it will be cool to talk to them in their language.”
The 17-year-old started teaching himself Chinese around five years ago, before taking distance education courses at the start of Year 11. His language ability was also useful in his part-time job at a local Chinese restaurant, where he translated orders for the cooks and customers.
Noah said he also had a basic knowledge of seven other languages. It was while teaching himself the languages that Noah got the idea of the translation tool. “I decided to make my own app because there weren't many around—all the other apps were full of advertisements (广告) and the translation feature (专题节目) wasn't powerful enough,” he said.
His app also includes a word of the day feature, lessons on how to write Chinese characters (汉字) and a news feed of important Chinese news.
He said learning computer programming to build the app had been like studying another language. With the end of school around the corner, Noah said he would like to pursue (追求) both his interest in computer programming and languages. “I'm planning to work for a year and save so I can go on to university as I really want to make a career (事业) out of one of these two topics.”
11.What do we know about Noah
A. He began to learn Chinese at 11. B. He failed his first Chinese exam.
C. He likes teaching Chinese to people. D. He gets a lot from learning Chinese.
12.What are included in Noah's app
A. Advertisements. B. Pieces of world news.
C. Suggestions for memorising words. D. Ways of writing Chinese characters.
13.What has Noah decided to do shortly after high school graduation
A. Look for a job. B. Attend university.
C. Develop a new app. D. Learn more languages.
14.Which of the following can best describe Noah
A. Curious and creative. B. Humorous and honest.
C. Courageous and caring. D. Outgoing and outspoken.
