Walt Disney is credited for creating such wonderful things as Donald Duck and Mickey
Mouse. However, he cannot take the credit for creating other well loved characters, such as
Cinderella and Snow White. They are almost automatically associated with Disney because
Disney turned old fables(寓言) into cartoon movies.
The original Cinderella varies very much from the Disney version we know today. It started
off with the girl mourning her mother’s death and going to her tomb three times a day. In addition,
there were only birds that helped Cinderella; there was no such thing as a fairy godmother or
helpful mice, nor was there mention of a horse and carriage.
The stepsisters were cruel: they always threw Cinderella’s food into the ashes of the fire and
made her sleep on the ashes on the floor, hence(因此) her name.
In the original story, the king’s ball actually lasted for three days. With the help of the birds,
the girl, beautifully dressed, danced with the prince on all three nights and the prince fell in love
with her. However, she broke away from him to rush back home each night. On the last night, the
prince placed soothing sticky on the stairs; as Cinderella made her escape, a shoe got stuck on it.
Here now is where the story becomes unpleasant: when the prince went to the house looking
for the girl whose foot fit the shoe, the wicked(邪恶的) stepmother told one of her two daughters
to cut off her big toe to fit into the shoe. The daughter did as told.So the prince took her away to
be his bride. But when they passed the tomb of Cinderella’s mother, the birds called out to the
prince, “Turn and peep, there’s blood in the shoe; the shoe is too small, the true bride waits for
you.”
Realizing he had been tricked, the prince returned the daughter to her mother. The other then
had to cut off part of her heel in order to fit into the shoe, with the same result. Only Cinderella’s
foot fit perfectly and so the prince chose to marry her.The story ends with the wedding day: as
2
Cinderella’s two stepsisters followed her, pretending to be devoted to her so that they could enjoy
the king’s riches, two birds flew by and plucked(啄) out their eyes. Because of their wickedness
and falsehood, they had to spend the rest of their days blind.
The original Cinderella is so different from the Disney version. Thank goodness Disney made
such changes; it indeed was a wise move.

They
But when they passed the tomb...the true bride waits
for you.
根据倒数第二段最后 2 行 two birds flew by and plucked(啄) out their
eyes. Because of their wickedness and falsehood, they had to spend the rest of their days blind.
故选 A。
The original Cinderella is so different from the
Disney version. Thank goodness Disney made such changes; it indeed was a wise move.
故选 A。

2050, half of the world’s population will be using it. What are we talking about That is the global
language—English.
The English language started in Britain in the 5th century. It is a mixed language. It was built
up when German. Scandinavian and French invaders settled in England and created a common

popular culture, for example, computer-related words such as “blogging”, “download” and
“chatroom”. Also included are words that teenagers use. Who does not know “cool”, “OK” and
“hello”
Other languages also influence English. Many English words come from French. Words like
“cafe” and expressions like “c’est la vie” (that is life) are all part of the English language. On the
other hand, the French language includes English words like “le weekend” and “le camping”.
German words are also part of English. Words like “kindergarten” come from the German
language.
Recently, British people have become interested in “yoga”. But the word comes from an
ancient Hindu language in India.

New Jersey Middle School Makes Students Go Phone-Free
A middle school in Union County, New Jersey, is forcing its students to stay disconnected in
class, by prohibiting cellphones. Maxson Middle School Principal Kevin Stansbury put forward
the phone ban last week after he noticed some major issues in the school. “Our test scores were
down, discipline was up,” he says. According to him, students were too focused on their phones to
pay attention to their lessons. So, he purchased Yondr pouches for the school.
When students come into class each morning, they place their phones in the pouch, which is
then locked up tight. It can only be opened using a special device at the end of the day. The ban on
mobile devices applies not just during class time but during breaks, with the only exceptions being
in times of emergency or in cases of students who need such devices to help with disabilities.
Eighth-graders who spoke with News 12 New Jersey say that they noticed a change in a
matter of hours. “It’s just better for everyone because you’ll understand how it feels to get more
work done instead of paying attention to the phone,” says student Charlene V. “I’m usually
listening to music, but today I got to communicate with all my friends,” says student Desiree
Duncan.
The program was originally met with resistance from students and parents, so the process
was not that smooth. But teachers and administrators say that the program will have a major
impact. “Students were talking and laughing and there were no cellphones other than being carried
in the pouches,” Stansbury says.
6
Teacher Nia Cummings says she even noticed students bouncing ideas off each other in class.
She says students used to give up quickly and just look for answers on their phones. She says they
now try to figure it out themselves. “Everyone is socializing and eating lunch together. That’s
what I wasn’t seeing enough of when phone usage was at its worst,” she adds.
Maxson Middle School is currently the only one in the district to use these pouches. Kevin
Stansbury also called on all the schools in the community that it’s worth paying close attention to
cellphone issues at secondary schools and taking actions when necessary.
( )1. Maxson Middle School put forward the phone ban because students _____.
A. weren’t focused on school work B. were always listening to music
B. used phones to cheat on exams D. stopped talking with others
( )2. What did the two eighth-graders tell the newspaper
A. Opposition from students. B. Teamwork with friends.
B. Daily routine at school. D. Effect of the program.
( )3. According to Nia Cummings, what change has the phone ban brought
A. Students discuss more in class.
B. Students finish their work on time.
C. Students guess the answers themselves.
D. Students check messages during the break.
( )4. It can be inferred from the passage that the phone ban _____.
A. has brought little change to teaching and learning
B. has gained support from every student and parent
C. might be carried out in other schools in the community
D. might have good influence on students’ health conditions
