After graduating from Ontario College of Teachers, I became a teacher at a one-room country school in Aldborough Township.
That first day of school as a 19-year-old female teacher was a frightening experience. It was one thing to have graduated as a successful student; it was another thing to face a classroom of little faces that were waiting for the “new teacher”. I had a classroom of 21 children of different shapes and sizes. The youngest was five going on six and the eldest was 16.
There were two doors for entrance in my school, one for the girls, one for the boys and just inside each door was a chemical toilet — no outdoor equipment for us! The heat in the building was a wood-burning furnace (火炉) down in the basement. Looking after the furnace was one of my responsibilities. Luckily, I knew a bit about starting a fire, so the school didn’t burn down.
What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason. I had one Dutch family, whose father would keep the children out of school to help with the farm work. Finally, I got tired of this and sent an education officer to solve the problem. Needless to say, I was very unpopular with that father from then on, but the children came to school much more regularly!
In the classroom, the older students helped the younger ones with learning, as well as with putting on coats and hats. If someone’s lunch was forgotten, everyone shared a bit of their food. We were a family. We had good times and bad times, but we kept learning. Far beyond maths, social studies, reading, grammar and writing, we learned how to get along with each other.
I loved teaching at this small school and knew I was teaching the children about life as much as about subjects. I’d like to believe some students will have an effect on the world that will last long after I am gone.
4. Why did the writer feel her first day as a teacher frightening
A. There were so many students in the class. B. The situations were quite different.
C. There was no outdoor equipment. D. The students were curious about her.
5. What do we know about the school
A. It was badly equipped. B. The playground was large.
C. It was once damaged by a fire. D. The students were of similar age.
6. What was a headache for the writer
A. A Dutch family hated her.
B. The students preferred farm work.
C. The education officer offered little help.
D. Some parents didn’t care about their children’s education.
7. What can be inferred from Paragraph 5
A. They cared about each other. B. They had an effect on the world.
C. They laughed away bad times. D. They did well in almost every subject.
B 5. A 6. D 7. A

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot (智能聊天程序) from OpenAI, an AI technology company In San Francisco. It can produce any kind of writing as required. Many schools are afraid that ChatGPT could result in dishonesty and harm learning. So the tool, called AI Text Classifier from the same maker, is invented. Its task is to decide whether the writing was produced by students or by AI programs.
OpenAI warns that its new tool—like others already in use—is not perfect. The method for detecting AI-written writing “will be wrong sometimes,” said Jan Leike of OpenAI. “Because of that,” he added, “it shouldn’t be only relied upon when making decisions.”
Teenagers and college students were among the millions of people who began experimenting with ChatGPT after it was put into use on November 30. The tool is a free service on OpenAI’s website. Many people have found ways to use it creatively and harmlessly. Still, some teachers are worried that it could be used to cheat.
So far public schools in some cities, such as New York City and Los Angeles, began to block (阻止) its use in classrooms and on school computers. Public schools in Seattle blocked ChatGPT on all school computers but then opened it to teachers. One spokesman Tim Robinson said teachers wanted to use ChatGPT as a teaching tool. “We can’t afford to ignore (忽视) it,” Robinson said. Students could also use the service as a “personal teacher” or to help create ideas when doing homework, Robinson said.
OpenAI talked about its new tool on a blog recently. But the company added that the tool could help to find some mistakes in writing as well as catch cheating. The longer a piece of writing is, the better the tool is at deciding whether an AI system or a human wrote something.
8. Who are more likely to use AI Text Classifier
A. Students. B. Teachers. C. Parents. D. Writers.
9. What is Leike’s attitude towards AI Text Classifier
A. Positive. B. Unconcerned C. Cautious D. Satisfied
10. Why are some teachers worried about ChatGPT
A. It costs the users a lot of money. B. It often makes wrong decisions.
C. They can’t use it as a teaching tool. D. Students will take advantage of it to cheat.
11. What can we learn from the example of ChatGPT
A. Every coin has its two sides. B. Rome was not built in one day.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. A bit is better than nothing.
B 9. C 10. D 11. A
根据第一段的“So the tool, called AI Text Classifier from the same maker, is invented. Its task is to decide whether the writing was produced by students or by AI programs. (于是,同一家公司发明了名为AI Text Classifier的工具。它的任务是判断作文是学生写的还是人工智能程序写的)”可知,AI Text Classifier的作用是判断文章是学生还是人工智能程序写的。由此推知,老师更有可能使用它。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段的“The method for detecting AI-written writing “will be wrong sometimes,” said Jan Leike of OpenAI. “Because of that,” he added, “it shouldn’t be only relied upon when making decisions.” (OpenAI的Jan Leike说,检测人工智能书写的方法“有时会出错”。“正因为如此,”他补充说,“在做决定时不能只依赖它。”)”推知, Leike对 AI Text Classifier的态度是谨慎的,建议人们不要完全依赖它。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“Still, some teachers are worried that it could be used to cheat. (尽管如此,一些老师还是担心它可能被用来作弊)”可知,老师对 ChatGPT担忧是因为他们认为一些学生可能用它来作弊。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段的“OpenAI warns that its new tool—like others already in use—is not perfect. (OpenAI警告说,它的新工具——就像其他已经在使用的工具一样——并不完美)”,第三段的“Many people have found ways to use it creatively and harmlessly. Still, some teachers are worried that it could be used to cheat. (许多人已经找到了创造性地、无害地使用它的方法。尽管如此,一些老师还是担心它可能被用来作弊)”,倒数第二段的“Public schools in Seattle blocked ChatGPT on all school computers but then opened it to teachers. One spokesman Tim Robinson said teachers wanted to use ChatGPT as a teaching tool. “We can’t afford to ignore (忽视) it,” Robinson said. Students could also use the service as a “personal teacher” or to help create ideas when doing homework, Robinson said. 故选A。

Many teachers believe frequent quizzes (小测验) help students better grasp classroom material. Crede, an associate professor of psychology, was skeptical that something as simple as a quiz could positively affect students’ academic performance. He decided to dig deeper and conduct an analytic study of existing research to see if there was any proof to the idea. What he discovered truly surprised him.
Crede analyzed data from previously published studies that examined 52 classes with almost 8,000 students, primarily college-level courses, to determine if frequent quizzes improved the students’ academic performance. Laboratory settings were kept out of the study because Crede wanted to observe whether similar studies from labs would apply to general classrooms.
Crede discovered that when students are quizzed over class material at least once a week, they tend to perform better on midterm and final exams compared to students who did not take quizzes. He also found that students who took frequent quizzes were less likely to fail the class, especially if they were struggling with the course content. Students who struggle the most in a class seem to benefit the greatest from frequent quizzes. The other surprising thing was how much quizzes helped reduce failure rates in classes. The chances of passing a class went through the roof where instructors used this. In addition to quiz frequency, another factor that seemed to positively affect students’ performance was immediate feedback from instructors. Also, quizzes that required students to answer with written responses proved more beneficial to their understanding of class material compared to multiple-choice questions.
Asking teachers to grade written quizzes daily or weekly may discourage some from carrying them out in their classes. Instead, it is recommended that instructors give online quizzes that can be automatically graded by a course management system. Quiz attributes (属性) proved insignificant in the study, including whether the tests were pop quizzes or planned, or if they were online or on paper.
12. What did Crede do to ensure his study’s accuracy
A. He focused on what happened in classrooms.
B. He researched as many students as he could.
C. He made laboratory settings as real as possible.
D. He gave easy quizzes to make every student do well.
13. What does the underlined words “went through the roof” mean in paragraph 3
A. rose B. appeared
C. faded D. lost
14. What did Crede discover in his study
A. Frequent quizzes could remove students’ failure in classes.
B. Instructors’ feedback was more important than frequent quizzes.
C. Frequent quizzes were especially useful to the struggling students.
D. Multiple-choice questions shouldn’t be included in frequent quizzes.
15. What may be a disadvantage of frequent quizzes for teachers
A. Accessing the Internet less frequently.
B. Having too many exam papers to mark.
C. Being unable to get appropriate test materials.
D. Finding it hard to choose the right type of quiz.
A 13. A 14. C 15. B

由第三段中的“The other surprising thing was how much quizzes helped reduce failure rates in classes. ”(另一件令人惊讶的事情是,小测验有助于降低课堂上的失败率。),可知小测验有助于降低课堂上的失败率,提高学习效率和成绩,可得出课程的及格率会上升,went through the roof 在此表示“增长”。故选A项。
由第三段中的“He also found that students who took frequent quizzes were less likely to fail the class, especially if they were struggling with the course content. Students who struggle the most in a class seem to benefit the greatest from frequent quizzes.”(他还发现,经常参加小测验的学生不太可能不及格,尤其是当他们在课程内容上遇到困难时。
由最后一段中的“Asking teachers to grade written quizzes daily or weekly may discourage some from carrying them out in their classes.”(要求老师每天或每周给书面测验打分可能会阻碍一些人在课堂上实施这些做法。)

My parents decided to drive me to the countryside for relaxation (放松) after a busy month. Then, on a Saturday morning, my dad started his car and we set off with great expectation.
Before long, we left the noisy city and came to the mountains. There were few vehicles on the road and the trees alongside were pretty. We felt so excited! As a few hours passed we drove onto a narrow road. And minutes later, we found a river not far away from the road. The beach was very wide, and we wanted to have a rest there for a while. So my dad turned our car and drove towards it. Soon, we were driving on the sandy beach. Our car wheels were struggling in the increasingly soft sand. But my dad wanted to get closer to the river.
Before he regretted it, our car had got stuck in the sand. My dad tried to turn around or move back but the car didn’t move. We were trapped in the middle of nowhere. What was worse, it began raining We got out of the car and tried to push it, but failed. We were tired and our hair and coats were a little wet. But the car only sank further into the sand.
Anxiously, we walked to the road, hoping to stop a vehicle for help. But after waiting for a long time, there wasn’t one vehicle passing. Just when we were helpless, we saw a farmhouse not far away. “Can they help us I asked. My dad was doubtful. Still, we reached there, and found it was a big family. They seemed poor but friendly. 【答案】One possible version:
To our surprise, they nodded without thinking. They quickly found some ropes and tools. And they all, including a sixty-year-old man, two tall sons, their wives and several cheerful children, followed us. When reaching the beach, some of us pushed the car while others pulled it out with all strength. We tried hard, but the car didn’t move. Just then, my father saw that many faces of this family were covered with sweat, but they didn’t leave. Finally, after we tried many times, the car was pulled out of the sand.
My dad was so grateful that he handed some money to the family to thank them. However, they refused. Instead, they invited us to have a meal and offered to dry our coats. At their insistence, we returned to their home again, where the women went to prepare the meal while the men lit a big fire using firewood. The family offered us clean coats and hung our wet ones near the fire. We sat around the fire, and soon felt warm. Later, we enjoyed their delicious meal. That experience made me know that there are many helpful people who don’t expect anything in return.

C There was no outdoor equipment.

D
Many teachers believe frequent quizzes (小测验) help students better grasp classroom material. Crede an associate professor of psychology, was skeptical that something as simple as a quiz could positively affect students’ academic performance.

My dad told them our problem and begged them to help us pull our car out.
