At 56, as an operator, I moved an old desk for a phone installation (安装). Later, back pain led to a CAT scan revealing a cancerous kidney (肾). “Either we got it all ... or we didn’t,” the doctor commented. “I’d recommend that you take that tour you told me about, and do anything else this year that you have been putting off.”
“My God,” I begged. “The doctor expects this to spread and take my life within a year! I won’t even get to claim any of the Social Security money I have contributed all these years. It isn’t fair!”
I hadn’t intended to take an early retirement; as a mother with two children, my last child was still in college. But if I had only a year, I was going to make it count. I joined the zoo volunteer program after the twenty-three-week course to learn all about animals and how to handle them. The newsletter for my genealogy society (家谱协会) arrived, hand printed, with genealogy misspelled and a call for a volunteer editor. I had only a year, but I could surely do better than that! So I became an editor. I used the blessings of the new computers to continue writing and sold a few pieces.
I gave away many of my possessions, all my art supplies, and waited. As the year raced by and I was still around. I figured I still only had a few more years, maybe five. I marked off the years, filling them with everything I had procrastinated doing all my life. I took courses, Spanish and Russian; I taught night school courses in genealogy and family history. I valued every minute, lost in visions of my new grandchildren I didn’t expect to see grow up.
Now I’ve not only seen the first of the grandchildren grow up, but all ten of them and the first four great-grandchildren. I have been a zoo volunteer for over 25 years. I have had more articles and a couple of children’s picture books published.
My “last year” of life continues to delight me, after a quarter century of making sure that every moment counts.

Now, researchers have developed a robotic leg with artificial muscles. A new muscle-powered robotic leg is not only more energy efficient than a conventional one, it can also perform high jumps and fast movements as well as detect and react to barriers-all without the need for complex sensors.
The researchers compared the energy efficiency of their robotic leg with that of a conventional robotic leg powered by an electric motor. They analyzed energy conversion to heat. “It’s easy to see that the motorised leg consumes much more energy if, say, it has to hold a bent position,” one researcher called Buchner says. The electro-hydraulic (电液的) leg’s temperature remains the same as it’s electrostatic (静电的) . “It’s like the example with the balloon and the hair, where the hair stays stuck to the balloon for quite a long time,” Buchner adds. Electric motor robots need heat management, but this system doesn’t.
Unlike electric motors that need sensors, the artificial muscle adjusts position through interaction with the environment. It has two input signals. “When a person lands after jumping into the air, they don’t have to think in advance about whether they should bend their knees at a 90-degree or a 70-degree angle.” The same principle applies to the soft robotic leg’s inner system: upon landing, the leg joint adaptively moves into a suitable angle depending on whether the surface is hard or soft.
Keplinger, another Buchner’s colleague, says. “Compared to walking robots with electric motors, our system is still limited. The leg is currently attached to a rod (杆), jumps in circles and can’t yet move freely.” Future work should overcome these limitations, opening the door to developing real walking robots with artificial muscles. He further explains, “If we combine the robotic leg in a four-leg robot or a humanoid robot with two legs, maybe one day, when it is battery-powered, we can use it as a rescue robot.”
8. What does paragraph 1 tell us about the robotic leg with artificial muscles
A. Its potential drawbacks. B. Its complex systems.
C. Its distinct advantages. D. Its wonderful working principles.
9. What does paragraph 2 focus on about the new muscle-powered robotic leg
A. Its advantages and disadvantages. B. Its heat management.
C. Its way of charging. D. Its efficiency.
10. What is particularly important for soft robotics according to paragraph 3
A. High adaptability. B. Soft surface. C. Reliable energy. D. Input signals.
11. What can we infer from Keplinger’s words in the last paragraph
A. Technology changes our understanding of robots.
B. Emerging technology opens up new possibilities.
C. Our lives in the 21st century are changed by robots.
D. Artificial muscles ensure the disabled a bright future.

A new study reveals that annually, the world generates around 52 million metric tons of plastic pollution. In order to make it more directly perceived, this amount of waste could fill New York City’s Central Park with plastic as high as the Empire State Building.
Researchers from the University of Leeds in the UK conducted this study. They analyzed waste from over 50,000 cities and towns globally for the study published in Nature. The focus was on plastic entering the open environment, excluding that in landfills or properly burned. In some areas where 15% of the world’s population lives, the government fails in waste collection and handling, leading to high plastic waste in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
India leads the world in producing plastic pollution with over 9.3 million metric tons yearly, more than double that of Nigeria and Indonesia. China, although often criticized, is in fourth place and has made great progress in waste reduction. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, and Brazil are also among the top polluters. The top eight countries are accountable for more than half of the world’s plastic pollution.
The study used AI to research plastics. About 57% were improperly burned or thrown away. This creates microplastics that threaten human health. Velis said microplastic spread is everyone’s problem. “We shouldn’t put the blame, any blame, on the Global South,” Velis said. “And we shouldn’t praise ourselves about what we do in the Global North in any way. The problem is that there is a shortage of resources and the government lacks the ability to provide necessary services for citizens,” Velis said.
Outside experts worried that the study’s attention on pollution, rather than overall plastic production lets the plastic industry off the hook (吸引). UN estimates plastic production will rise. Many scientists think it releases greenhouse gas. Neil Tangri, senior director of science and policy at GAIA, said the study defined plastic pollution narrowly. It risks losing focus on the upstream. Tangri added, “It’s necessary but it’s not the whole story.”
12. Why are the Central Park and the Empire State Building mentioned
A. To present the fact. B. To present the issue visually.
C. To highlight an opinion. D. To illustrate an argument.
13. Which country tops the list in plastic pollution production
A. The USA. B. Russia. C. India. D. The UK.
14. What is Velis’ opinion about plastic pollution
A. The Global South is mainly to blame.
B. The Global North should be praised.
C. Managing it better is needed but not the whole solution.
D. The issue is a lack of resources and the government’s inability.
15. What do outside experts think of the new study
A. Imperfect. B. Ground-breaking. C. Far-reaching. D. Valueless.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was 46, my husband Jerry suggested that I go skiing with him, promising, “You will love it! This is just the first step.” “Not on my life! You know I can’t stand being cold.” I didn’t mention my fear of chairlifts and heights. “You go and have fun, sweetheart!”
So, Jerry went skiing with his nephew and other new skiers. More trips followed with increasing excitement. Yet, I couldn’t ignore their genuine joy in skiing nor the positive changes in Jerry. I began to feel guilty. Didn’t I owe something to this sport and to my husband Shouldn’t I at least try it
“What ” my friends asked in surprise when I said I was considering skiing. “You’re 46 years old! You’re going to break a leg.” Though they reflected my own fears, I took up my courage to take my first step. I told Jerry I might try skiing. Thus, he immediately planned a trip just for the two of us.
Though filled with fear, I couldn’t hide my excitement as we drove to California’s Big Bear Mountain Resort(度假胜地). After checking in, Jerry’s blue eyes sparkled(闪光)as he signed me up for the next day’s beginner class.
The following morning, after fitting me with rental ski boots, leading me to the instructor, and kissing me quickly, Jerry rushed to the nearest ski lift. I stood in a straight line with all the other beginners, like ducks in a row, and listened to the ski instructor. Last in line at the upper end, I tried to appear invisible until the unthinkable happened: I lost my balance and fell. I tried to follow instructions, but my feet, which I couldn’t feel, refused to cooperate. I could only turn in one direction—left.
Worse, I couldn’t remember what to do with my skis when I needed to stop, so I just fell over. And I kept forgetting the rule: “Never point your skis downhill when trying to get up.” One time, I just lay there, exhausted. “I hate skiing!” I whispered, finally getting upright.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Sensing this was my first and last ski trip, Jerry did the best thing he could.

D. Valueless.

注意:1.续写词数应150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Sensing this was my first and last ski trip, Jerry did the best thing he could.

By the end of the ski season, I had overcome all my fears.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Sensing this was my first and last ski trip, Jerry did the best thing he could. He supplied me with food. Wisely, he blamed my instructor and promised private lessons. The next morning, I fell in love with my new instructor. He was patient and made me confident. Things started clicking. I learned how to stop, get up easily, and make right turns. Finally, I said goodbye to my instructor, who handed me over Jerry for further practice on the slopes. With hard practice I soon mastered that.
By the end of the ski season, I had overcome all my fears. When I was on the snowy slopes, I felt like a bird flying freely in the sky. I could smoothly turn left and right. I was not afraid of the challenges on the skiing field anymore. With the wind blowing on my face, every moment of skiing was filled with joy and a sense of achievement. It’s truly a wonderful feeling to be able to ski freely and enjoy the beauty of the snow-covered mountains.
