Many people will not try acupuncture (针灸) because they are afraid that the needles will hurt or the experience will he unpleasant. This is really a pity, as acupuncture has the capacity to effectively treat a variety of health conditions that typically do not respond to other forms of action.
In my practice. I have used acupuncture to treat both children and adults. In fact, I have done full acupuncture treatments on kids as young as 4, including needling points on the face, hands, and feet. Even patients of this age typically do not experience any discomfort that lasts for more than a second or two.
The truth of the matter is that nobody really likes needles. We generally dislike them because of the injury involved in getting shots and other procedures using needles. It is always amusing when a new patient comes in and, in a tone that suggests their situation is truly unique, admits, “I don’t like needles.” Most new patients say like that, yet they are often very surprised to find how pleasant the treatment actually is, even though it involves needles.
There are times when you can feel an insertion prick (刺痛) with the needles that lasts for a couple of seconds. You can also feel a nervy sensation that radiates through the area being worked on for a brief period of time. Other sensations include a dull achiness or pressure around the needles.
Many traditional Chinese doctors use a more aggressive style of needling that involves strong stimulation and thick needles. I have found this to be a turnoff for many Westerners, since excellent results can be achieved by using thin needles, which won’t cause strong sensations around the needles.
If you are interested in acupuncture but are hesitant to try it because of the potential pain involved in treatment, I encourage you to move through that fear, as you will likely find acupuneture to be a pleasant, gentle, and very effective form of treatment for your health care needs.
24. Why are many people unwilling to try acupuncture
A. It isn’t widely applicable. B. It may cause discomfort.
C. It will last quite a long time. D. Its effects don’t get proved.
25. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. The patients always think their fear of needles is reasonable.
B. The acupuncture treatment is well received initially by most patients.
C. The patients are usually surprised by the actual effect of acupuncture.
D. The acupuncture treatment involves the same procedures as getting shots.
26. Which can best replace the underlined word “turn off” in paragraph 5
A. Challenge. B. Hobby, C. Inspiration. D. Memory.
27. What’s the author’s attitude toward acupuncture
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Worried. D. Favorable.

Using AI, a group of researchers from Dalhousie University have begun the surprisingly complicated work of translating the language of chickens. This groundbreaking study about chicken vocalizations could have positive effects on chicken welfare.
Chicken “speech” is actually a lot more complex than one might think—they squawk, cluck, and even purr. And the way they communicate with one another can be affected by their environment, age, and level of domestication (驯化). In addition, according to The Debrief, chickens also communicate via visual cues such as body language and facial expressions.
Luckily, the researchers were able to use new AI technologies to help interpret what chickens are saying. According to The Conversation, AI can process and analyze huge amounts of audio (音频的) data. It can recognize patterns and types of vocalizations. Using this information and an AI technique called Natural Language Processing, the researchers have begun to interpret the emotional states of chickens.
In addition, the researchers also used data from video and thermal imaging (热成像), tracking the chickens’ expressions and facial temperatures. This can be used to track how chickens respond to stressors.
Neethirajan, an expert in stock farming (畜牧业), and the lead researcher of the study, told The Conversation that his team’s interest in chicken communication is not just academic. The researchers hope that this could be a turning point in terms of stock farming.
“Farmers can use this knowledge to create better living conditions, leading to healthier and happier chickens, This, in turn, can impact the quality of produce, animal health and overall farm efficiency,” he said. Additionally, he advocates for the use of this information to influence animal welfare policies. The more people understand animals, the more likely they are to care about their well-being.
28. What can we know about chicken “speech”
A. It is easy to understand. B. It is similar to other animals’.
C. It is influenced by multiple factors. D. It is much more limited.
29. What role does Al play in the research
A. It deals with audio data. B. It stimulates chickens to speak more.
C. It tracks chickens’ expressions. D. It records chickens’ facial temperatures.
30. What does Neethirajan expect of the research
A. It can boost AI’s use in stock farming. B. It can be academically successful.
C. It can promote animal welfare. D. It can help create new chicken species.
31. What would be a suitable title for the text
A. The Belief in Chicken Intelligence B. AI and the Future of Farming
C. The Emotional World of Chickens D. Chicken Language Understood
D
Hearing is the ability to perceive sounds through vibrations (振动) that are interpreted by your brain. These sounds can be a baby’s cries, a conversation with others, music, and even the rain falling on your roof. These are all external sounds. But some people experience a high-pitched buzzing or ringing in their ears, a condition known as tinnitus (耳鸣). These sounds are internal and cannot be removed. While there is no cure, there have been many strategies to help reduce the symptoms (症状). Now a new device, the Lenire, which has been approved by the FDA, can treat tinnitus in a very unusual way—by using electrical stimulation of the tongue.
The Lenire is the first bimodal neuromodulation device approved for tinnitus treatment in the US, according to the American Tinnitus Association website. Developed by the Irish company Neutomod Devices, the device uses mild electrical pulses (脉冲) to the user’s tongue while the person listens to different sounds via headphones, which helps to stimulate changes in the brain, shifting the user’s attention away from the buzzing or ringing sounds.
A clinical trial of the device found that the Lenire reduced the severity of tinnitus in more than 80 percent of the participants during a 12-week period and this improvement could last for a year.
Audiologist Brian Fligor, who treats tinnitus patients in Boston, became one of the first to use the device in the US. He said, “A good candidate for this device is somebody who’s had tinnitus for at least three months,” but he warned that people should be evaluated first to make sure there’s not a potential medical issue that is causing the ringing. Some patients also benefit by using a combination of a hearing aid and the new device.
One of the disadvantages of the device is that it is expensive and not covered by insurance. But people using the Lenire have found relief from the symptoms of tinnitus and it proves that silence is really golden.
32. What can be learned about tinnitus from paragraph 1
A. It relates to babies’ cries. B. It is incurable at present.
C. It affects the tongue. D. It is caused by continuous ringing sounds.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the Lenire
A. Its social effects. B. Its working principle.
C. Its target users. D. Its development process.
34. Why are Brian Fligor’s words mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To imply other potential medical issues can be serious.
B. To show a hearing aid is as useful as the new device.
C. To display the new device is not well appreciated by all.
D. To stress not every tinnitus patient is suitable to use the new device.
35. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To introduce a device B. To advertise a company.
C. To report a clinical trial. D. To explain a disease.

When it comes to being brave, my dog Nessie is no prizewinner. She lets the cat eat before her. She’s never once barked at the postman. Squirrels have taken over her backyard because she dares not chase them up a tree.
Loud noises are what scares Nessie most. She trembles whenever a truck backfires. She goes nuts during thunderstorms. And she’s terrified of fireworks. Knowing that Nessie hates firecracker-crazy days, my son James and his wife Natalie are always careful to keep her safe inside the housed during those moments.
But one year, assuming that the fireworks season was over, they left her outside in the fenced backyard when they went to dinner with friends. Big mistake. They returned home to find spent bottle rockets littering the street beside their house. Nessie, who wasn’t wearing her collar and ID tag, was gone. Their black dog had disappeared into the black night.
It would take a miracle to bring her home.
James called his dad and me before sunrise the next morning to tell us the sad news. “Can you come help us look for her ” he asked. Of course we could.
On foot, by bicycle and by car, we searched the area in an ever-widening circle. We talked to friends. We talked to strangers. We hung posters on telephone poles and placed a LOST DOG ad in the newspaper. Nessie’ s picture was posted and shared countless times on social media. We checked daily with the kind people at the animal shelter to see if a dog matching Nessie’s description had been turned in. Every time James received a phone call from someone saying they’ d spotted a scared-looking black dog with no collar, we followed the lead. But there was still no hope.
Days passed. And Nessie did not come home.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
More than a week after Nessie went missing, James’ s phone rang again.
As we approached the caller’s house, a little dog appeared.

Text 1
M: Is there anything more to do before we leave
W: I’ve packed our clothes. You might call a taxi as I lock the suitcase.
Text 2
M: I spent so much time polishing my letter of application.
W: It’s worthwhile to make the effort. You know just how important it is to give a good impression on the interviewer.
Text 3
M: So what have you bought from the new supermarket
W: A leave- in conditioner. It was a real bargain. I got it half its original price, saving 10 dollars.
Text 4
W: Excuse me, I’d like to place an advertisement for a used car in your newspaper.
M: OK, but you have to run your advertisement all week. It will cost a bit.
Text 5
W: Good morning, sir. Welcome to our country. May I have your passport, please
M: Good morning. Here you are.
W: Do you have anything to declare
M: No. That’s why I came through the door where the notice says “Nothing to Declare”.
Text 6
W: David, what do you plan to do this weekend
M: I have no good idea yet. What about you, Alice
W: I’m ready to go bird- watching. I just signed up for a weekend group on trips to popular locations for bird- watching. Would you like to join us
M: Yes, I’d love to. It’s an opportunity to get close to nature.
W: Yes. The group will walk around the Century Park. I’ ll take my camera to take some photos.
M: Wow. How can I join this group
W: I will help you do that after school.
M: OK. Thank you!
Text 7
M: Emily, what are you doing You’ve been staring at your cellphone for a long time.
W: Oh, James. My friend introduced me to an app, Playdate Planner, and I am trying to create an account for my son.
M: What is Playdate Planner
W: It’s a social platform designed to build a child’s social circle within a safe and secure environment. It helps find like-minded parents with similar- aged children in the nearby neighborhood. Parents can join in activities, share stories, create memories and expand children’s world, along with amazing rewards and offers!
M: What’s the age limit
W: It’s for children up to 12 years old.
M: Sounds great.
Text 8
M: Angela, did your kids work when they were in school
W: Yes, my kids had to work for their pocket money. They would help with the washing up, sweeping, cleaning, whatever. They worked hard to earn their pocket money and they thought it was really hard.
M: So did you ever cut their wages
W: Yeah.
M: Really ! How often would you have to do that
W: More so in the beginning. They must know if you don’t work for your money, you don’t get your money. That’s a life lesson, isn’t it
M: That is great! Because I think a lot of parents just love their kids—They don’t want to have the trouble, they don’t want to have the fight, and they just give them the money.
W: You can go on a six- hour bus trip with the kids here. You don’t hear a noise from the kids. But Western kids would be crying. You’d have to feed them things or you’d have to have a PlayStation or an iPad or something. It’s a totally different way of acting.
M: Yeah. When I came to Asia, I noticed that the kids were happier with less, much less than we have.
Text 9
W: Listen, Jonathan, I need your help. I don’t know anyone here yet.
M: I’m glad to help you. What’s wrong
W: My mother- in- law just went into hospital in Los Angeles. Harold and I will be flying there tonight.
M: I’m sorry to hear that. What’s wrong with her
W: Doctors aren’t sure yet. Anyhow, the real problem is Suzy. She has a bad cold, and we don’t want to take her with us. But we don’t know who can stay with her.
M: You need a babysitter. I could have Suzy stay at my place.
W: I don’t want you to do that, Jonathan.
M: Why not
W: Your own kids would get colds from Suzy. I think it would be better to have a good babysitter here. And we need one for three days.
M: I know who we can ask now. There is a girl I know, Sara Ralston. She is 17, and she will take this kind of job.
W: I’d like to talk with her. But Harold and I are leaving tonight.
M: I’ ll give you her number. I hope she can do it. She is very responsible.
W: I’m glad you know someone. I knew you would be the best person to ask about this.
M: I’ ll go home and get Sara’s number. I’ ll call her first myself.
W: Great.
Text 10
M: I didn’t have a smartphone for a long time because I thought it was too expensive. And my old phone was fine for making phone calls and sending text messages. But after seeing other people using cool-looking phones, I wanted to buy one. When I bought my first smartphone, I was really surprised at how reasonable the cost was. There was a lot to pay right away, but the monthly bill turns out to be similar to that of my old phone. I never did a lot on the Internet before, but with my smartphone, I’m entertained every day. I also love being able to check my email and use the map when I am driving. And I seldom use it to chat with my friends. The main thing I like better is the sound quality. With my old phone, it was really hard to hear people on the other end of the line clearly, but my smartphone is much clearer. However, not everything is better. You know some people say they can’t live without their smartphones. I sort of feel like that now. I get nervous when I can’t find my phone or connect to the Internet, and I always feel like I need to check my messages. And get this: I dropped my phone on the ground the other day, and the whole thing broke! I had to spend a hundred dollars to get it fixed. Whenever I dropped my old phone, it was fine!

写作 第一节(满分15分)
One possible version:
Recently, our interest group conducted a survey on the use of question- solving apps among high school students. The results are astonishing: about 60% of students admit to frequently relying on these apps for homework assistance.
The reasons behind this trend are diverse. Facing heavy academic pressure and tight schedules, students are drawn to quick solutions. These question- solving apps offer them a rapid means to tackle academic challenges. Additionally, the excessive expectations from society and family are partly to blame for this phenomenon.
Personally, using these apps moderately as a learning tool is wise, rather than allowing them to spoil our critical thinking and problem- solving skills. After all, learning is not merely about finding answers; it’s about understanding knowledge, which is essential for our long- term personal growth.
写作 第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
More than a week after Nessie went missing, James’s phone rang again. The caller was convinced he had found our lost dog. His detailed description of the frightened, black dog huddling under a car in the evening matched Nessie’s appearance and behavior perfectly. Natalie’s joy was immediate; yet James, still stung by previous false alarms, said, “Don’t get too excited. Just think how many times we’ve had our hopes dashed.” With a mix of hope and apprehension, we set out hurriedly, each step echoing the silent prayer for the miracle of our beloved Nessie’s safe return.
As we approached the caller’s house, a little dog appeared. The setting sun cast a warm glow on her fur, and we could see the familiar tremble in her step. It was, indeed, Nessie. “Nessie,” we called. She hesitated before recognition sparked in her eyes, and then she bounded towards us. With hearts full of relief and joy, we welcomed her back; James pulled her into his arms with tears streaming down his face. Nessie responded with licks, her tail wagging more vigorously. From that day on, James made sure Nessie was never left alone during the fireworks season. Nessie’s adventure had a happy ending, thanks to the kindness of a stranger and the unwavering determination of her loving family.
