By the time Nalin Kamat was 13, the Toronto teen was well on his way to becoming a working artist. He had already had his first show at a local art center, showcasing his series titled “Dispositions”, which illustrated his own growth during adolescence (青少年).
Yet he wanted more — specifically to start showing his work in a juried exhibition, where a group of art experts would evaluate and select pieces in a competitive review process. That’s when he hit an obstacle, discovering in the very last line of a multipage application that the minimum age for submission was 18.
That rejection became a motivation for creation. “I thought it’d be really cool if I could provide the opportunity to more young artists,” says Nalin, now 15. With the support of his parents, in January 2023, Nalin rented a storefront and founded Little EGG Gallery, which is now profitable enough to make ends meet by charging a small handling fee for any displayed work. In turn, Little EGG helps promote young talent by showcasing their work.
Not long after opening, David Griffin, a professor and artist of Ontario College of Art and Design University stepped into the gallery and met Nalin. Griffin regards him as someone special: “a strong young artist with a really excellent idea — creating a space for showing the natural genius of young people. It was a void (空白) in the art world.” There Nalin asked Griffin to help judge an upcoming competition. The first juried show was last spring, and five-year-old Jack Gamble won for his abstract painting titled Pokemon.
As Nalin was busy with school, life and his own art, Little EGG is mostly open by appointment only, but he’s still committed to growing it with seasonal and themed shows scheduled a few times a year.
24. What do we know about Nalin Kamat from the first two paragraphs
A. He drew teenagers’ growth in his work.
B. He became a working artist when aged 13.
C. He was disqualified for a juried exhibition.
D. He showed his series at the capital art center.
25. Why did Nalin decide to set up Little EGG Gallery
A. To promote artists by showcasing their work.
B. To form the connection between different galleries.
C. To expand his own business through themed shows.
D. To show young artists’ talent by offering them a stage.
26. Which of the following can best describe Nalin’s idea of opening the gallery
A. Pioneering. B. Short-lived. C. Popular. D. Unpromising.
27. What kind of person is Nalin Kamat according to the text
A. Helpful and cautious. B. Devoted and creative.
C. Humorous and intelligent. D. Knowledgeable and ambitious.

On a recent afternoon, dozens of elderly farmers were playing chess in a courtyard, a common scene at the Madongchuan Township Zhaotai Village Mutual Support Nursing Home in Yan’an, a hilly part of Northwest China’s Shaanxi province.
There are no caregivers in sight. Instead, the residents look after one another at the self-service nursing facility, which was rebuilt from a deserted primary school in Madongchuan township. The younger ones grow vegetables in a small path of land nearby. They cook outdoors using a shared kitchen, and the food is delivered to those with mobility issues. After meals, many play chess or chat at their leisure. Local authorities also hired a retired village doctor to oversee the facility so that the residents no longer have to go to the hospital for less severe health problems such as cold and fever.
“They were enjoying themselves in the moment, and leading rather independent lives” Zhao Liwen, secretary-general of Taikang Yicai Foundation, said of her first impression about the residents during a visit in 2019. The Beijing-based charity offered help by donating 1 million yuan to the nursing home. When she arrived, the seniors, all empty-nesters who are either childless or have children working in big cities, were wrapping dumplings together.
The scene was a sharp contrast from life in the area more than a decade ago. Village elders used to live lonely lives, scattered (分散) among the remote area and unable to access hospitals and other public services. Then in 2013, a flood washed their homes away, forcing them to move into the nursing facility.
The nursing home in Yan’an is one of the best examples of China’s increasing efforts to take advantage of the strength of “relationship-based communities” in rural (乡村的) areas to ensure fast-graying residents are cared pared with a more commercial or rule-based society in cities, rural communities in China are known to operate through personal connections and mutual trust. The self-sufficient, interdependent culture displayed by the nursing home is being supported by authorities to deal with aging in the countryside.
28. What do the elderly residents do in the nursing facility
A. They use their separate kitchens. B. They enjoy their leisure activities.
C. They share advanced medical services. D. They employ caregivers to look after them.
29. What approach does the nursing home in Yan’an take to deal with the rural aging
A. Following strict regulations. B. Developing mutual cooperation.
C. Conducting commercial strategies. D. Promoting individual independence.
30. What is the author’s attitude to the self-service nursing home
A. Objective. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Disapproving.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Rural Revival: China’s Approach to Aging Population
B. Promoting traditional values: A Tale of Aging in Rural China
C. Bridging Generation Gaps: The Story of Yan’an’s Nursing Home
D. Relationship - Based Community: A Nursing Home in Rural China
D
Researchers have discovered that limiting a certain enzyme (酶) can have a dramatic impact in protecting against the effects of Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔兹海默). The finding could lead to a new class of drugs that fight the disease.
Much of the historical research into Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has focused on plaques (斑块) that form in the brain, which recently, though, have been found not likely to be the direct cause of it. In seeking another way forward, a group of British researchers turned to an Australian study which showed having the gene for the production of an enzyme known as PDE4B was identified as a risk factor for developing Alzheimer’s.
With the intention of investigating how PDE4B might affect the brain, the UK team genetically modified (改造) mice with Alzheimer’s to reduce PDE4B activity. The results are astonishing.
First, the mice with Alzheimer’s and normal PDE4B expression showed memory loss in the sense of direction, a distinctive characteristic of AD. But those who had the genetic modification to have less PDE4B activity showed no damage at all. The team also observed that inflammation (炎症), another hallmark of AD, decreased to some extent in the brains of mice with less PDE4B activity, compared to those with more of the enzyme.
Because all of these effects were found in the mice that already had Alzheimer’s but had significant improvement in symptoms, the researchers say that further investigation into how to limit PDE4B in human patients with the condition could lead to new treatment pathways.
“These results offer real hope for the development of new treatments that will benefit patients with Alzheimer’s disease in the future,” said Neil Dawson, a coauthor of the study. “The next stage is to test whetherPDE4B- limiting drugs have similar beneficial effects in the AD mouse model, to test their potential effectiveness in human Alzheimer’s disease.”
32. How did the British researchers get the inspiration
A. By figuring out the direct cause of AD.
B. By going over much historical research.
C. By referring to a previous Australian study.
D. By breaking down PDE4B in the AD mouse.
33. What can be learnt about PDE4B
A. Its activity promotes the sense of direction.
B. It might bring about the development of AD.
C. It is processed by a certain enzyme in the brain.
D. It will be investigated to reduce mice brain activity.
34. What does the underlined word “hallmark” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Cause. B. Feature. C. Principle. D. Finding.
35. What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about
A. The future research focus. B. The existing research background.
C. The probable research limitation. D. The practical research application.

Get lucky! Ways to make the universe in your favour every day
In the grand universe, there are small yet powerful ways to turn the daily activities into a playground of possibilities.
36 Well, good news — you can! Let these key insights give you power to start.
Embrace a positive mindset
By shifting your mindset from a focus on obstacles to a celebration of possibilities, you adopt a more optimistic approach to life, thus creating a magnetic energy that attracts opportunities and favourable outcomes. To do this, start your day by looking at yourself in the mirror, cry out positive statements, and form success in mind. There can be a statement for absolutely anything! “I’m so lucky, everything works out for me”, “I deeply and completely love and accept myself”, “I am grateful for all the blessings in my life”. 37
Create your luck network
Luck often appears through connections and cooperation. The atmosphere you create will attract others. Therefore, building a network of like- minded individuals who can support and inspire you is extremely important. 38 The more you invest in meaningful relationships, the more opportunities for luck to show through shared experiences.
Take calculated risks
Despite the common belief that luck is purely random, taking calculated risks opens doors to unforeseen opportunities. Whether it’s pursuing a new career path, or stepping outside your comfort zone, calculated risks drive you into a space where luck is more likely to find you. Taking risks and stepping beyond comfort zones are described as actions that promote personal and professional growth. 39
By following the above ways, you can actively make the universe in your favour each and every day. As you start this journey, remember that luck is not a passive force. 40 So, go ahead, get lucky, and watch as the universe goes in your favour.
A. Wonder how you can get lucky in the universe
B. Ever wish you could make the universe in your favour
C. It’s also important to have a clear understanding of your objectives.
D. Just a few examples, but get creative and state them loud and proud.
E. Embrace the discomfort of the unknown, and you will create a rich ground for luck.
F. Attend events, engage with communities, or spend time to connect with your loved ones.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
“She wants a what ” barked the fruit seller. I was in one of the many street markets of Luzhou, a small city located in China’s Sichuan Province. Already, a crowd of curious on - lookers was gathering: white - haired grandmas, toothless old men, mothers holding infants. Everyone was waiting, wondering why the foreigner was causing such a fuss (大惊小怪).
I took a deep breath. The crowd leaned in. “Do you have a pumpkin ” I asked as clearly as possible. A mother holding an infant explained there was no pumpkin here in English. I had to move on to yet another market in my search for Halloween.
As an American English teacher in China, the urge was strong to explain my country’s cultural traditions to my students. I’d had plenty of success in teaching the Chinese about significant United States holidays and events, Halloween being one of them. Yet I was now in a new teaching position, in a different region of the country which seems to have every kind of produce known to man except the one I wanted for Oct. 31.
I had learned that in teaching about Halloween, there was no substitute (替代品) for a carved pumpkin. Descriptions produced blank stares. Drawings were misinterpreted. Pictures only puzzled.
Sure, I could give up showing a real jack-o’-lantern (南瓜灯) to my students. I could lecture on the history of this tradition, which had its origin in old beliefs about the return of the spirits of dead people. We could have a go at wearing masks, and role-play trick - or - treat.
But nothing could compare with the pumpkin. For that reason, I was willing to go through just about anything to find a pumpkin for my students.
In another section of the city, I headed to a big market. “Do you have a pumpkin ” I asked the seller I saw. “A what ” she seemed to be at a loss. However, I didn’t know how to make her understand what I wanted.

【参考范文】Suddenly, an idea occurred to me. I could bridge the language gap with visuals! I drew a simple sketch of a pumpkin, complete with a stem on top and the characteristic ridges (纹路). “I need something like this,” I said, showing my drawing to the seller. She studied the sketch with curiosity, then looked up at me, understanding dawning on her face. After a moment, she disappeared behind a pile of produce and soon returned with a round, orange pumpkin. “That’s it!” I exclaimed, my face lit up with joy. Immediately I rushed back home, starting to carve my beautiful pumpkin.
On Oct. 31, I brought the carefully-carved pumpkin into the class. The students gathered around, their eyes wide with curiosity as they observed the delicately carved face with a flickering candle inside. It was indeed a traditional jack-o’-lantern, and it captured the essence of the holiday. As the light cast shadows around the room, I began to tell them about the origins of Halloween, the legends of spirits and the custom of carving pumpkins to drive off evil spirits. They listened attentively, eyes fixed on me. We were all connected through the universal language of celebration and tradition despite the cultural differences.

M: I mean, I’d rather get paid more, (6) but… it’s not a bad little gift!
W: They didn’t do anything like that at my last job. Even when we worked late, we had to bring our own sandwiches.
M: Well, that’s not cool!
W: Let me just put my dumplings in the fridge, and I’ll join you. (7)
Text 7 (第8题为总结题)
W: Dad, is it okay if Frankie and I change working hours this week I was meant to work at the restaurant Friday night, and he Saturday….(9)
M: Why do you want to change
W: My group is planning to watch the movie given by our English teacher and then discuss the presentation.
M: And your brother’s okay with changing (9)
W: Yeah, (9) there’s a concert he’d like to go to, anyway.
M: Well, as long as I have enough waiters, I don’t mind whose turn it is. (9) (10)
W: Thanks, Dad!
M: But I warn you, Saturday will be busy! We have two birthday parties coming in, plus a retirement celebration for some college professors in the private dining room.
W: I can deal with it!

W: Hi, Tim. Good to meet you.
M: Hello, Mrs. Rylance. Thanks for taking the time to see me.
W: Well, of course! You’ve got an excellent application. (12) (13) You’re currently working at the Criterion, I believe (11)
M: Correct. (11) But it’s always been my dream to work here.
W: It is a fantastic place. All theaters are magical, of course, especially the Royal.
M: I agree. There’s nowhere like it! My father is a doctor at the St. James hospital across the street. I would often watch a show here while waiting for him.
W: Well, how wonderful!
M: However, I do understand the position will be hard work.
W: Yes, I’m afraid so! As Artistic Director, I need a personal assistant who is unafraid of hard work, long hours… and famous actors! (13)
M: Ha-ha! Well, I believe I could be your man. (13)
W: Fantastic. (12) Let’s go into my office and talk some more. (13)
Text 9
M: Did the speaker say what time we’d be taking a break I’m awkward to ask him, after coming in late.
W: You were only late by 10 minutes! (16) Anyone can understand that. (14)
M: I know, but I feel bad. You could tell he wasn’t pleased when came in.
W: Hey, it’s not your mistake. (14) The bus was late. (15)
M: Actually, I walked this morning. My mom’s car has broken down, so she couldn’t take me to the bus stop. (15)
W: You walked all the way to school from your place I’m amazed you got here at last!
M: I know. I’m worn out!
W: You must be.
M: But I promised my mom. I’d call the repairman in my break, as I know more about cars. She’s worried about how much the repairs will cost.
W: I’ve written it down somewhere, hang on.
M: Thanks.
W: Okay, so… this first part is between 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. (16) Then a 15-minute break. Then we’ll go through until 12:30 p.m., before having an hour for lunch. The afternoon part should finish by 4:30 p.m.
M: Okay, great. So, I can call the repair place in about half an hour. Thanks, Dora.
Text 10
There are many different methods to try when it comes to learning a new language — classes, apps and even trips abroad are all popular and recommended. But there’s one quite old-fashioned method that I highly recommend. Getting yourself a “pen pal”!
I first met my “pen pal” through the French lessons at school. Her name is Dominique, and she lives in Quebec, Canada. (17) (18) (19) (20) We’ve been writing to each other for two years, and it’s been great. (18) As well as really improving my French, I’ve learned so much about her culture and lifestyle, and the best part is, we’re now close friends. (18) In return, I’ve planned to tell her about my life here in China and helped her with her Chinese.
We mainly use email, (19) as it’s quicker but sometimes we’ll send each other letters and gifts. They can take up to three months to arrive, though, so we only do this once in a while, at Christmas and during Chinese New Year.
I recently spoke to her on the phone to discuss our coming exchange trips to each other’s countries. (20) It was so cool to hear her voice! My spoken French needs some improvement, so I’m looking forward to the trip!
